Paying for a bedroom on an Amtrak train going from Los Angeles to Chicago is EXPENSIVE, but we were excited to splurge for a unique travel option. One of the "perks" is getting to wait in the Metropolitan Lounge. I don't need much and don't care about the quality or quantity of the free snacks and drinks, but the person here is very snappish with these 1st class guests. Scolding people about not having their luggage near them because it's not supposed to be on the floor (which you find out when you put your stuff on the floor next to you) but in cubbies (which are almost full already an hour and a half before departure). Scolding people on where they stand at her desk. She was very concerned that I wear ear buds and thought she could still hear my phone (I don't know what she was hearing). We were excited and friendly, so we're handling it okay, but she would make it difficult to relax otherwise. I have to say that I struggle to see how this is a perk. She has already irritated a few guests and she is very indignant about how she feels SHE is treated. read more

A wonderful, wonderful experience at the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge in Los Angeles Union Station before our long trip out East. A personal character trait is that when planning something new, I leave way too much time for contingencies, often resulting in time being passed just waiting. Of course if other uncontrollable factors are in play (e.g. record rainfall and resulting flooding all over Los Angeles County in Feb '24), it even adds more 'contingency' to our schedule. So when we started to execute the plan to go to Chicago from Long Beach, all by train, we got to Union Station almost a full 3 hours before the scheduled departure of the 'Southwest Chief' Amtrak to Chicago. Union Station LA is a busy place (though nothing compared to Union Station Chicago as we later found out). So a personal email from Amtrak a couple days before our trip, stating that we had access to their Metropolitan Lounge because we were staying in a private sleeping 'Roomette", made us want to seek out this place that we had never been before. It's hard to find, so asking security along the way is the way to go. It's/ near the Amtrak ticket booths, but the entrance had been cordoned off with barriers. You do not want to start sneaking pass barriers in a place like this, so got confused on what to do next. We stood in line at the ticket booth, and then asked the attendant if we were in the right place for the Metropolitan Lounge, since there were barriers. It's a question that she must have been asked before...she immediately said Yes, and that I should just move the barriers to get through (making sure I put them back). Once we got through, there are elevators and stairs up to the next floor. The entrance to the lounge is locked, but signs tell you to 'ring' the doorbell. And yup, Brooke came up to let us in. She was the lone attendant monitoring the lounge and she was very, very nice and helpful throughout our stay. She first scanned our QR code from our Amtrak digital ticket (one ticket covered the entire room on the train and had been emailed to both of us). This confirmed that we had a right to be there, and that we were eligible for various services. This included Red Cap and baggage check pickup. We were asked to fill out Amtrak baggage slips for all of our luggage, and that we could check bags if we wanted to. This meant that these bags would be picked up directly from the lounge, loaded into the train where you don't have access during the trip. It's just like the checked bag services provided when you fly (including having to wait 10 - 20 minutes at your destination for the bags to be delivered). There was additional space in the lounge to put your carry-on luggage. There was only 1 other party in the lounge when we came in, and by the time we left, 3 other parties had taken use. So even though the lounge isn't particularly big, there was plenty of space to stretch out. Specifics: -- good, fast wi-fi -- a large selection of premium snacks and beverages. There were bags of premium chips, energy bars, beef jerky.and granola/nut packs. -- a full selection of canned sodas, along with a water dispenser (both flat and bubbly) and a freshly ground coffee/tea/hot chocolate dispenser. -- Private, clean bathrooms towards the back. -- Comfy chairs and sofas. -- A few TVs spread across the lounge showing news Finally, we took advantage of the door-to-door passenger delivery given to you as a complementary service (Red Cap). Monique stopped by the lounge around 1 hour before scheduled departure time, to let us know that she would be delivering us via motorized cart, and that we should stick around. At around 45 minutes scheduled departure, she got the OK from the train. We got on the cart and away she went. She mentioned that because it was raining outside, she would be taking the indoor route and that we should keep our hands inside the cart. Mind you...there is no special way for vehicles to get to the platforms, so we went through the indoor hallways. There were a ton of people going to their destination, that had to move out of the way...and entrances where I wasn't sure a cart was going to fit through. But sure enough, Monique got us there right to the entrance of our specific sleeping car. We took our bags, thanked her, got introduced to Cynthia (our cabin attendant) and got on the train (experience to be documented in a subsequent review). It was a new experience for me, one that I fully enjoyed. I think this is how all lounges (including airport) were like, back in the day before folks like us started to travel a lot more and expected lounges to provide things like hot food. We really loved our stay here, and wish we could have stopped at the Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago to compare. read more

Keith at the lounge was everything this Business Class lounge used to have such a negative experience as the staff that worked there seemed to not be interested in even working much less in anyone attending - Keith is a breath of fresh air and was so fun and kind - made our trip so much better and we cannot wait to be back - thank you for the extra snacks and the ride to the track itself - so cool! I do love this lounge! It is nostalgic and simple. Comfy chairs and couches while you wait. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. She checked us in and tagged our bags. There is a 50lbs weight limit on bags. We brought our own sandwiches, but there are a few restaurants, Starbucks, and subway sandwiches downstairs if you need to go grab some food. The chips, cookies, sodas, coffee, and water were free. The staff wiped down areas and the floors and bathrooms were clean. People all wore masks when thery weren't eating or drinking. They even have a shuttle directly to your train. We all know how hot, and crowded the terminal gets. The restrooms are nasty. The homeless hang out there, no outlets or WiFi. I had not heard of the "MetLounge before so I was impressed with everything about it. The red caps pick you up from the train and shuttle you to the lounge. It was awesome not to have to walk from the train through the busy train station. At the lounge they have free refreshments waiting for you: coffee, tea, sodas, juice, and snacks and they check your luggage for your next destination if need be. Meant for sleepers & business class only, you check your bags in here and sit back and relax. The room is nicely appointed without feeling overdone and it goes well with the train station theme. During the summer months, it can get busy and the room is packed with people. The staff are gracious and seem to handle a crowd pretty well. If you travel in the sleeper cars, you have access to the lounge area on a first come first serve basis. It is separate from the rest of the station so it is not as busy. Unless you have been here before, it is a little hard to find. It has air conditioning with a lot of comfy chairs. There is a television and clean bathrooms. I am a fan of Amtrak. No stress of having to drive long distances and the opportunity to relax and sleep on a train is awesome. Did not know the Metropolitan Lounge existed until our family had Sleeper train tickets. The Lounge is located upstairs in the Los Angeles Union Station. The Amtrak staff are so courteous, helpful, and efficient. Especially if a member of your family is disabled, they accommodate very well. There are complementary snacks and beverages in the lounge as you wait for your train. Fresh fruit, chips, and large chocolate chip cookies are available. They have sodas, teas, and coffee as well. You can kick back either at the table and chairs or the leather seats. Although the decor is very simple with a corporate feel, Amtrak does sufficiently to keep their business class and sleeper train customers comfortable enough. When it is time to go to the train, they prepare you and transport you via a red cart. The Lounge is a nice, clean and comfy place to chill if you are in business class or a sleeper train. Cheers! This lounge is upstairs in Union station, and you must have a business class ticket. My toddler and my 5 month pregnant self, took the Pacific Surfliner from San Diego, CA to Los Angeles, CA on 6/20/16, to meet our connecting Coast Starlight train to Seattle, WA. We had about one hour in between trains so we decided to check out the lounge, since it was an accompaniment to having a sleeper car. The Lounge is located on the second floor, above the Amtrak baggage ticketing. Be aware you'll have to take an elevator up. Let me start off by saying that it was a nice space, very clean, with ample space provided; that is if there were only 40 people waiting for a train. I think there were about 60 people or more in there. Amtrak should definitely be awarded a new space at the depot. The people at the front desk were very helpful, asking each passenger where they were going, if their bags needed to be checked, etc. It is in this area where you can also catch the Red Cap/Shirt Service, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. They literally load your carry on bags, help you on the golf cart, drive you directly to your train, and unload your bags again. So helpful for any persons needing assistance. Did I mention it was 120 degrees outside? I highly recommend tipping the Red Caps/Shirts, even just a few dollars, for their hard work. There was muffins, juice, coffee, water, and soda available. They ran out, but it was restocked immediately by an attendant. There are also flat screen TVs and a small conference room. The bathrooms are nice; there is one for men, one for women. They should really offer a gender neutral bathroom as well. The Women's bathroom has a baby changing station in the larger stall. I'm not sure if the men's room provides one. Overall, this was a good experience and I would definitely recommend for anyone with sleeper car reservations to take advantage of. Every station is not equipped with lounges like this, although it may be beneficial for Amtrak to consider it. 4 stars due to great hospitality and amenities; minus one star because they need more space! read more

My wife had a sleeper room and she wanted to wait in the lounge. The train was late and the lounge was overcrowded with all the seats taken up. Saw some coolers on the floor, is that where they keep the drinks which was never offered to my wife? I understand Covid and less employees, but c'mon, they were already making excuses before they walked you single file like 2nd graders to the school yard for recess. Thank God for the Metropolitan Lounge. I love Union Station, but over the last decade it's become overrun with vagrants and drifters - destroying a lovely, historic structure - it's dangerous and it smells. When we were there September 28th, 2016, the bathrooms were closed (seriously - closed). Where do people go potty? Also, there was a heat wave and there is no air conditioning. I met my 75-year old mother there and she was almost in tears - flushed, hot, nowhere to sit down, nowhere to go to the bathroom. I had told her how wonderful Union Station was and felt betrayed by what it has become. I've used the first class lounges in Portland, Minneapolis (more a separate waiting room than a lounge, but still better than nothing), and Chicago, and it didn't occur to me until this trip that there might be one in Los Angeles, too. It is not easy to find - tucked away at one end of the station and upstairs (take stairs or elevator). It saved the day and turned a hellish, sweaty, homeless nightmare into a pampered, luxury experience. Upgrading your ticket to business class on Pacific Surfliner is worth it - not for the cheap snacks Amtrak provides on the train - but for the access to this lounge. Of course, sleeper car passengers on the longer train trips have access to this lounge as well. The Metropolitan Lounge is quiet, air conditioned, clean, comfortable, and staffed by a friendly and efficient hostess. We were helped by Stephanie (thank you - you are worth ten times whatever they are paying you - you made our day and we will never forget it!) We joyfully rushed to the clean bathrooms and then relaxed and recovered in the air conditioning and comfy seating. Once we were feeling human again, we were able to leave our luggage in complete safety and visit Olvera Street (no lockers or checked baggage area anywhere else in Union Station if you want to leave your bags and do some sightseeing while waiting for your train). We returned from a pleasant visit to Olvera Street (despite the heat) and had nothing to do but relax, watch the news (and then Jeopardy!), browse the Amtrak memorabilia in the glass cases, and enjoy the available snacks (fruit, beverages, chips, and giant chocolate chip cookies). Stephanie said they used to have white chocolate macademia nut cookies, too - yum! Please bring those back - but keep the chocolate chip ones as well :-) Stephanie kept an eye on the train schedules for all of the passengers in the lounge and called for red caps to pick up passengers or luggage at the right time. I had expected to walk to our train, but mom and I were shepherded onto a golf cart by a friendly, helpful young man who loaded our luggage for us and drove us to the train, then actually sat and waited with us until our train arrived (wonderful since there is really no seating otherwise - we were able to sit in the golf cart until our train pulled up). We made sure to tip him and wished we had somehow thought to tip Stephanie! Next time I find myself at Union Station, I will be making my way to the Metropolitan Lounge as soon as possible. read more
