I came here this weekend on a quick ride from Martinez up to Stockton for an event as I don't like to drive more than an hour and as soon as I got off the train, it felt a little weird. Really sketchy. Reading the other reviews it sounds like his neighborhood is not a place that you really wanna be. The waiting room is ample, but it's just so empty that it's eerie. I mean, the ride itself was less than $10 so I can't really complain too much because that would be more than gas to pay but it just feels a little bit weird here. read more

I noticed that most people gave this Amtrak station poor reviews. I guess I missed most of the drawbacks that others suffered through, so I can only report my experience. I scheduled and bought my ticket online which was extremely easy and convenient. Not to mention, reasonably priced! I had to leave from Elk Grove which required that I board a bus at an Amtrak only bus stop. From there, passengers were transported to the Stockton train station. As I got off the bus to wait for the train, I didn't face any rude people, transients, or any other scary situations. The train arrived on time, and was pretty full with passengers, but luckily, I found a seat and was able to place my pack back in an upper compartment & small piece of luggage at my feet. I was quite comfortable with plenty of leg room! I'm glad I decided to travel light, since people were having a hard time storing large bags in the luggage racks. My round trip train ride was relaxing and uneventful. The conductors were helpful and friendly. After checking my ticket, they place another ticket above your head to show that you are the occupant of that seat. I was impressed that the overhead announcements were loud and clear enough for passengers to hear! We always knew in advance when and where the next stop was going to happen, so you could prepare in advance to disembark. I also appreciated that Amtrak offers free WiFi and outlets near the window seats to plug in laptops and charge cell phones! There is also a food & beverage car. Restrooms are small! When I first decided to take this train trip, I was nervous and worried that It would be a complicated endeavor. But Amtrak had it all organized for me with straight forward directions and continuous updates via email & text message. I really enjoyed my mini vacation and now I'm thinking of ways for more train destinations in the future! read more

I was not at this location long enough to really get a good idea on how the crewmembers are that were working this particular evening shift when I went here last night. I was only at the station for about 10 minutes waiting for my daughter. This is of course a smaller hub station and from what I notice the trains just pretty much stopped for about a 10 minute grace period for a passenger loading and unloading. The lobby was empty. It seemed as though it was kept clean there were one or two vending machines located inside as well. I notice about three associates behind the counter which is secured with metal bars. I can't say that it's located in a decent area of Stockton but it's good to see that Amtrak is available to the city. I also noticed that there is A taxi that was on site as well as Stockton Amtrak police. So that adds to a little bit of semi secureness while being at this location read more

The interior and exterior of Stockton train station is/ was very clean. No people just hanging about - person behind the counter was friendly and nice. Mostly very quiet, no loud people or the like - maybe everybody is so subdued due to it being a Monday Morning. I bought my tickets on line - which was easy to do. read more

First off now I know why this station has no stars. I was told by Amtrak aswell as Amtrak Fresno there where no connecting busses to continue to San Jose from train.i was traveling with my nephew which could not purchase a ticket because it was full. .when I arrive and onboard SALINA as she rudely informed me is begging driver to add another rider and not only that the driver allows someone to get on with out ticket or reservation .. how is ride anymore important to the ones that prior tried to get on and ride .. SALINA needs a vacation and customer service training asap. .. and for SALINA to as well try and scold me as if I was some child of hers you got me mistaken ...... Look...you get what you pay for. You want to get where you, when you want, then you buy or rent a car. You want the cheap trip, then this works, but don't expect a lot of frills. In the 20s-30s, rails were still a first class experience, but now, it's definitely a "I don't want to drive there" thing. For the money, it's decent, and I don't expect first class service. So, for $25 it gets me where I want, in just slightly longer than a drive, but I can get work done, or nap, or whatever. So....it's Amtrak. read more

This Amtrak station is in South Stockton , and although the staff is friendly, this is a rough looking train station, I am happy to report I spent no more than 10 minutes and that's with coming and going haha. But this was my stop, I enjoyed the ride, I didn't get hit up by the crack hoe or pimps outside, so all in all it was a good day. Just try not to loiter, make sure your ride to pick you up is there when you arrive, but not too early so they don't get harassed outside and get dropped off close to the time your train will arrive. I frequently catch a ride southbound from the South station and catch a bus here to connect northbound. I agree that the location is in a lower socioeconomic neighborhood but in commuting Amtrak for 10 years and often using this location, I have only came across homeless people that don't try to engage with anyone. For what it's for, the station serves its purpose. As a main hub serving south bound riders and northern riders to the Bay Area and Sacramento/northern California, it could use some station upgrades for the comfort that many people seek. The station staff are helpful and friendly but to also include Amtrak security/police as I've seen across many other California stations (Oakland, LA union station, Sacramento) will make a huge difference in providing a sense of secure well being for passengers. read more

Two stars only because this location is not what I would call very welcoming to Stockton. It's rough neighborhood, and all I can say is that it really is not Amtrak's fault for the way the station looks. It is old, and has been through allot as most of the town has been. But like most of my reviews, there are some good, some bad to most places. The Good The staff without a question is the bravest souls to be working there around the clock. They have to be tough and nice all at once, please don't think that the Staff is being rude to you, they see allot of rude and ungrateful people every day, they are not used to seeing our meeting nice people. The Bad The location is maybe the worst part of this place, with it stuck on the wrong end of town, it's not rare to see or hear gunfire in this neighborhood. I wish I could give my hometown Amtrak station a better rating. It gets such a low rating for two main reasons: 1. Location 2. Station condition First off the station is down on San Joaquin Street...like South of downtown. Really, I would say its not the best neighborhood but thats even being too nice. I hesitate to get out of my car even at the 76 station down the street. I would in no way want to hang out here waiting outside the station for anyone. The station inside mirrors the surrounding neighborhood. It seems like it must have been a really nice station years ago but maybe because of cutbacks and other factors its really run down now. Typical Amtrak station with only a few employees who are overworked and prob underpaid. There are actually two different Amtrak stations in Stockton within a couple miles of each other...this one and the ACE train station. I prefer to use the ACE station since its geared for commuters and was built recently...its still not in the best part of town but anything is in a better location than this station. read more

I hadn't been planning on a trip on Amtrak anytime soon, but after my car broke down in Bakersfield, I found it necessary to help me get out of dodge, er Bakersfield and back home by Thanksgiving without spending a whole lot more on a one way car rental (plus gas). A one way (non discounted) adult ticket was $81 from Bakersfield to Fremont on the San Joaquin. For transportation that is older than the automobile, I have to commend Amtrak for integrating 21st century tech into train travel. After easily making a reservation (buying my ticket) on http://www.amtrak.com, they gave me a couple of options for picking up my boarding ticket: Either stand in line and get my tickets printed from the ticket agent or using an in station kiosk (appropriately named Quik-Trak) set up for purchasing or picking up tickets. As I was cutting it short getting to the station to catch my train, standing in a line for an agent was out of the question and the kiosk (with no line whatsoever) was a no-brainer. Picking up my tickets as simple as scanning a barcode that was sent to my e-mail that I could pull up on my smart phone. Tickets printed, I boarded the train, put my luggage in the luggage storage and found a open seat. Next to your seat a electrical outlet is provided so you can charge your phone, laptop, anything that needs to be plugged in. Faced with a 5+ hour trip and without a book, Amtrak now provides free wi-fi on their trains and helped me pass the time while I surfed the interwebs. There is a downside to train travel, up to and including travel delays and this trip made sure to include some. We were delayed for a good 30-40 minutes as we needed to stop because of a stalled vehicle on the tracks ahead. After that bump in the tracks, the rest of the trip went smoothly. As most of my travel is usually by car, I probably won't be using Amtrak that often, but when it is necessary, I know Amtrak will be there to get me where I need to go. read more

I've been warned going here, even if it was as simple as transferring from the Amtrak to the bus. A definite sketchy looking station. So old that I literally just got off the Amtrak, looked straight ahead, & their signs for destinations for buses are printed on paper. I don't know, maybe that's for changing the location purposes. The "Preferred" buses have no wifi & no outlets. The plus is that the bus driver introduced himself & stated our destinations in a timely manner. However, the Amtrak came to Stockton 10 minutes late & the bus left almost 30 minutes later. As for everyone's reviews with homeless people, YES! I made sure I came across no one besides a girl who looked my age & complimented my outfit & the bus driver. There is an area outside of the "Bus Zone Only" full of tents. It's like a homeless village behind it. Trash everywhere. I thought the station near home was bad, but this station is a straight up no safe zone. Move fast, never leave your belongings, keep an eagle's eye on your surroundings, don't talk to strangers, & don't bother looking cute in this area. read more

This place scares me. Too many homeless people asking for money and threatening people if you don't give them money. Kind of crazy. The station itself is old. The area around looks old and abandoned. Could be better. I think maybe they should modernize the place a bit and it'll be much better. Add some more security too. My mother showed up to the station to buy a ticket. She's never bought a ticket or ridden on the train. She stepped to the counter with 2 people working. Neither employee acknowledged her and one picked up a cell phone and started walking away as she asked if she was in the right spot to purchase a ticket. She walked away upset but returned because she made the trip down there. Again she asked for help but this time was met with rudeness. Choice words were exchanged and my mother left. She purchased her ticket over the phone in the end. The area the station is in is horrible but that's absolutely no excuse for horrible customer service. read more

Had to stop to transfer to another Train. Had to wait several minutes only to be notified the Tracks would be blocked for a couple of hours. Horrible dirty rundown area. Felt very insafe, as two men approached me just as my daughter drove up. Stockton should be embarrassed and ashamed that one of the first impressions a visitor might have is of that station. RUN FAAAAAR FAAAAR AWAY, and RUN FAST! This train station is so awful, and is one of the reasons why I refuse to take Amtrak ever again. This Amtrak station is literally in the ghetto - South Stockton. Everything around it is completely run down and old. There are homeless people everywhere almost loitering around the train station, and more than once they have come up to my car/my ride's car and asked for money while we were getting into/out of the car or sitting in the lot waiting. I used to take Amtrak a lot during my freshman year of college at UOP and I felt SO uncomfortable being here by myself as a young girl. I would rather wait inside the building than sit/stand outside on the benches. If somebody is picking you up, it's better to have them get there before you get to the train station so that you don't have to wait for long. And if you're a girl, have a guy pick you up rather than a girl. I never wanted to be at this train station longer than I needed to. You ESPECIALLY don't want to be here at night when it's dark and your senses aren't as strong as they could be during the day time. The building itself is EXTREMELY run down and looks so dirty. I just want to bathe myself in hand sanitizer after being at this location. It has an old train station look/architecture which makes me think it looked nice once back in the day...but it definitely needs to be completely torn down and redone. I've also been significantly delayed at this train station. I've waited anywhere from 5-30 minutes longer because of delayed train stations. All I wanted to do was get outta there ASAP! I would recommend taking the ACE train station (also located in Stockton, about a 5-10 minute drive away) if you can. That train station was recently built and is much nicer. Location is unfortunately about the same -- ghetto and not a place you want to be at for a long time, but it is much more visually appealing of a station than this one is. Unfortunately this Amtrak station has more trains going out of it as the ACE seems to be more of a commuter train than long-distance, but if you can, I'd suggest taking the ACE. read more

I was on train 713 and this happened June 2, 2019 at approximately 11-11:30 am I travel Amtrak ALOT and get along with everyone.. employees, passengers etc I always enjoy my time But this time I went to the cafe and I wish I got her name but I didn't but you can probably figure out who was working by me giving you the train # and time. She was so rude and harassing me in front of everyone else around. I have never in my life encountered such horrible customer service. I have worked customer service and would never treat a customer the way she treated me. Then when I walked away she continued to talk about me with the others in line. I really hope she doesn't act and talk like that with other guests and I really hope I never come in contact with her again because if I see her working the cafe again, I definitely will not be buying anything, she ruined my whole experience that day and mind you I had my 4 year old son with me as well. So unprofessional. And if someone can't work and deal with people asking simple questions maybe she shouldn't be working customer service. I really hope something is done about this. Had to take the bus from home to Stockton to catch a train headed south- Jesus Hubert Christ I wish I would have taken the earlier train straight through! (no connections) Stockton Amtrak station looks as bad as it did a decade ago.... What a shame. I'm certainly happy I didn't decided to travel at night. I'm currently on bus 3914 from Livermore CA to Stockton. The bus was 50 minutes late. I called and got the runaround from the operator. The driver didn't seem to feel the slightest concern for the delay or the inconvenience and was poking and grabbing at my phone trying to move the e ticket around. Nearly knocked the phone out of my hand and ordered me to pull it back up when he exited the ticket screen. Now I'm sitting here listening to 70's music being played extremely loud to where I can hear it over my music on my headphones. Who knows if my train will be there when I transfer in Stockton. I was stranded in Lodi for an hr from Stockton because a tire was flat on the bus which delayed my trip even longer. You guys should check that in the beginning so situations like this won't ever happen. You guys have horrible service and negligence of your buses. This is one station that "sucks". AMTRAK, the City, and the new Mayor should do something about this place. It's run down, and it smells as if a skunk has spent the night. The personnel are not that special. I have seen better attitudes from all over CA. In fact most people who have a decent paying job enjoy what they do. I was a school administrator for 38 plus years and I loved every moment of it. I travel now only for recreational purposes. Most of the time I will go to Modesto's Station because it's modern and the employees are more pleasant. I have a history with train travel so I know what's out there for the public. Terrible! You may receive a great ticket fare "if you reserve ahead of time" by calling Amtrak. It is not Amtrak itself that is the priblem, it is the strange people that hang around the premises and ask for money and/or try to sell you stuff (objects not illegal stuff) for money. There are always Police present so that helps and I'm sure that is what keeps any illegal activity under control. However, there are a lot of homeless people, and many strange people, it isn't someplace you would want to wait too long for anyone arriving. It is not safe outside at night either, be careful, and look for the Police that are present. read more

I've been coming here for years. I've traveled to the City from here and all the way to Oregon. I've never had a bad experience until today. So I reserved 4 tickets to Richmond to see my uncle and I never get the e-tickets in my inbox. Ok no biggie, I figure I'll print them out at the kiosk. But the kiosk is disgusting and smeared with god knows what so I take my receipt to the attendants. So the girl came really grudgingly to the counter. It's not that busy and when you're in customer service you just suck it up and smile. That's how it is. She demanded everyone's ID really loudly and ok I gather up everyone's ID. Then she starts nitpicking at my mothers ID and asks for a social security card. Who travels with that? Especially in South Stockton!! So then she says "I really shouldn't let you travel today but I guess I'll have to". I guess an elderly Mexican lady is a potential terrorist huh? read more

What prejudices most people against the Stockton Amtrak station are the car burglaries that occur in the parking lot. It is a terrible problem. But this affects only those people who train off and leave their car in the lot. Get someone to drop you off and the rest of the experience is fine. read more

I don't know how to describe this station's location. Each time I visit the area surrounding it seems to be falling apart more and more. Piles of trash that has been left on the sides of the road, tall grass littered with plastic bags and other wind blow garbage, partial tents that still stand after the bulldozers cleared out the underpass homeless living community, emptied buildings left falling apart. A pretty scary place to be at, especially at night when the station closes. Back in highschool i used to take this train every weekend to travel to merced. I got to know most of the staff there. They are friendly people. Ive learned that its best to not get into any problems there and to not cause any. Im used to that area and best tip is to not travel alone. read more

Sitting on an amtrak train right now and there is greater than 1 hour delay of not moving with absolutely not explanation for the reason of the delay. This is not the first time my train has been significantly delayed like this, in fact more times than not the train has been delayed. This is the LAST time that i take Amtrak. Frustrating! read more

Train was an hour and a half late. It got pulled to the side for a passing train that wasn't there. We were sitting there for over an hour waiting but nothing happened. Then we started moving at a snails pace and not ten minutes later we had to stop again for another train to pass. Finally after over an hour of wasted time we got going again only to be stopped twenty minutes from our destination... TWICE for yet ANOTHER TWO trains to pass US. It's not like the people on our train don't have schedules to keep as well. Who ever was at the control station was either new, drunk, or just plain stupid. Why the hell don't they let the train that's an hour and a half late go by and have the train that's on time pull over and wait? This is just plain ridiculous! read more

The staff is the best I've experienced in California. The station is located in a rough section of town. You will probably experience panhandling in the parking lot. Be prepared with either change or a firm " No, I can't help you with bus fare." If you are walking north to downtown Stockton, be sure to travel in the day time. Its a bit sketchy and not a place to bring your kids. If you can plan your trip, the trains that come into the ACE station arrive in a better part of town. read more

Been to this station several times going between Modesto and Sacramento. Just wish that Amtrak wouldn't make you transfer here when heading for Sac from Modesto. It's horrible, trying to find a place to sit outside. And if you want a decent seat, that's where you have to be when the train arrives. People start running for the train like they're giving away free cheese. This has to be the worst station on the San Joaquin trip. read more
