We've been to Amy's ice cream in the past but that was many years ago. Not sure if times have changed but it's not the same - as far as getting what you want. I don't remember all these rules and stipulations. The service from the employees themselves were fine. It's the policies that they set forth which are so complicated and confusing and don't seem necessary. They do let you sample flavors. I want to know why we're not able to do mix ins unless you have two scoops. At least make that clear on the menu. I was set on wanting graham crackers mixed in with my mint chocolate chip ice cream on a cake cone. 1) I tried ordering and they said no. Only sprinkles on cake cone. So I switched to waffle cone. Doesn't make sense why I can't even get a mix in with cake cone at all. 2) I wanted the graham cracker mixed in with one scoop. But they said I needed two scoops otherwise it's gonna go on top. So I caved and got one scoop with it on top cause I had just eaten a whole dessert and meal previously. We were here to celebrate a bachelorette. Next time I know better not to compromise on what I want which was the mix in which was the whole point, so get the two scoops. My husband ordered his strawberry ice cream with fruity pebbles and fresh strawberries mixed in his cup, so he had to get two scoops as well but he made his decision way easier than mine (I'm already indecisive enough as it is, but when I know what I want I'm pretty set on it). This location was a bit more confusing as well. We first parked and went to this building that just had a bunch of boxes. Then they pointed us in the direction of the playground. It's also combined with a burger joint. If you get some ice cream you get a discount on the burger. The inside was small but got crowded very quickly and was very warm for a spring day. We wanted to get out quickly. There was plenty of shaded seating outside where kids could play and for us to eat. Perhaps they need some kind of decision tree like hey if you want this, these are your options. Choose topping first since if they contain anything but sprinkles you can only get a waffle cone or cup. If you want mix in then the next choice is getting two scoops. Or choose your container cone or cup since that limits your other options. It's just too much and could be way simpler. read more

Who hasn't heard of Amy's ice cream? This is an ice cream institution of Austin. This location has a very small interior where you place your order. There's really no place inside to sit, but there is lots of room outside, some of it is covered. There is a separate establishment attached to Amy's called Phils icehouse. Amy's is located on a congested and busy stretch of Burnet Road, so if you're headed south on Burnet, it'll be easier to get to. Parking is in the rear, but there are a couple of spaces by the road. The ice cream prices are surprisingly not outrageous, I just had a simple ice cream cone for less than three dollars. They also have ice cream shakes and frozen ice cream cakes for purchase. Amy's ice cream is a good place for ice cream and a good place to bring young kids because of their playground. However, I have noticed (since we have been three days in a row) that they do not clean the outside patio or tables/chairs. I see ice cream puddles that have not been cleaned, the trash cans have not been cleaned and overall, the area is dirty. A good power wash or hosing daily is sorely needed. read more

Fun stuff, although I've now moved on to a 'big girl job' I think it's only fair to let everyone in on one of Austin's best kept secrets: Amy's Ice Creams Catering!! The flavors that they typically bring are Mexican Vanilla, Belgian Chocolate, Strawberry and Oreo! You can sub other flavors but I think there's an extra charge. They can do toppings as well and those are Heath Bar, Oreo, pecans and M&Ms, or even make it a sundae event and add hot fudge and freshly cut strawberries. Yum. This might be a super unpopular opinion, but at least you know that I don't like everything and I stand by what I say. I have reasons why I gave Amy's only 2 stars... 1) I think they are overpriced. 2) Too much milk. 3) I'm not that in to ice cream. Okay, okay, I know #3 is not their fault, but #1 and #2 are. I love Amy's. The staff at every location I've been to is friendly and so very nice. I love the quality of the ice cream and the playful decor. But what really prompted this review was the fact that I dropped my auto insurance card in one of the shops and they were nice enough to mail it back to me (with coupons! Who does that?!).
