After moving back to Maine we were disappointed in one sandwich chain we tried, so when in Portland we decided to give Anania's a chance. There are two branches now, one on Congress Street in town s one on Washington Ave. The service is fine, perhaps a bit slow the day we were there but it was very busy so that is to be expected. The counter person was friendly and had a sense of humor. We ordered a green paper and sausage calzone to share and picked up some chips and a homemade cookie each. The calzone was excellent. I will not hesitate to stop there again if we are in town and want a sandwich or pizza. read more

If you are looking for the best REAL Maine Italian sandwich, it is at Anania's! Let's face it - Italians are all about the bread and pickles. Anania's uses bread from Botto's Bakery- a mere few doors up the street. Can't get more local than that. It is so soft and makes this sandwich. The pickles are a good dill, with flavor but not annoyingly tart like some. Veggies are super fresh. Another favorite is the ham salad, which is made fresh at Anania's. Actually, all of their "salads" are made fresh. It is great on Italian slices with lettuce. They have potato salad, legit old school macaroni salad, and pasta salad that is all made fresh as well. No buckets of Sysco salads here. I have ordered quarts before for parties and saved me some cook time. Lastly, the sweets...all are handmade by the baking staff at Congress St and they are literally award winning! Don't miss the whoopie pies and they have a bunch of gluten free options as well. Out of this world! I have never had issues with staff, but this is a type of business with high turnover, so I am not expecting a lot more than make me some damn good food and ring me up with a smile - which they do very well! Visited Anania's after picking up an order of boat supplies at Hamilton Marine. The Italian sandwiches at the famous chain have gotten rather skimpy on ingredients (vegetables) and the bread could be improved. One the Maine guide's at Hamilton suggested trying Anania's. I talked to the proprietor prior to ordering. He made the sandwiches and then I explained why I was trying his establishment. He said let me know your opinion, I don't think you will be disappointed. He was right. I had ordered (4) sandwiches and the opinion of each one of us, was this is just like Maine real Italians use to be made. No more chain restaurant for our Italians. Anania's beat the competition with polite greeting, excellent veggies, on bread from a local bakery and is well worth the trip! read more

Ok, I will start this with the fact that Anania's has the best Italians in Portland. My Italian was delicious!! We also ordered a loaded steak and cheese and 2 large meatball subs. My son loves the loaded steak and cheese. The meatball subs left a lot to be desired. Sauce was mediocre and the meatballs we small and cut in half. Definitely not worth the price. With food out of the way- let's talk service. Well lack there of. When we walked in the 2 women looked at us like we had 3 heads. Like, "How day you come in here?". They made out sandwiches and rang us up for real never smiled. They were unwelcoming, unfriendly, and borderline hostile. Very weird. read more

My wife and I are visiting from Connecticut and today we decided to go to this deli and get me a lobster salad sandwich, it was on a menu and I didn't see any issue with ordering one since I went to the other location just yesterday and got this sandwich, which by the way was delicious, no problem ! On arrival a young guy greeted us and asked what we were looking for.. So I asked for my lobster salad sandwich and the guy said it wasn't the season for it and sorta mocked me saying how it's only April and literally made me look stupid! We left and went to the other deli and I got my lobster salad sandwich after all... So idk what got me upset more, the fact that this kid literally mocked me and just made me look stupid or the fact that I was in Maine which is known for hospitality and somebody was so rude for absolutely no reason ! read more

We recently moved to the Back Cove area, and have been exploring what is within walking distance. Anania's is my quick stop to grab a piping hot slice of pizza, some tasty desserts, and other quick necessities if we do not feel like going to a department store. I've heard their meatball sandwiches are to die for, but I have yet to try! I got denied a cheeseburger at 8:40 on a Friday night. That's pretty lame, I feel like I was bothering the staff.

There's an Anania's in South Portland (which is the one I went into), but all of the stores are more or less the same. I got an amazing sandwich; grilled chicken with onions, peppers, mushrooms, honey mustard on a tomato basil wrap. I'll never go to Subway again! The chicken parm calzones looked amazing, and I can't wait to go back and get more. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! read more

My go to morning coffee and breakfast sandwich spot....the coffee is ok...not great....the breakfast sandwiches take about 4 mins...get it made to order hot....don't buy the premade ones under the heat lamp...completely different product....I like the sausage, egg, and American....I add lettuce, tomato, and a touch of mayo....very good Their sandwiches are fresh, quick, and reasonably priced.....stay away from the pizza.....it's not their lead product.... Who would have thought that you would be able to find the best lasagna, pizza and subs in a little variety convenience store?! When I first moved to Maine, the company I worked for had our luncheons catered from Anania's and I fell in love! Their lasagna is the absolute best! When I found out it was just a little variety store I was floored! I used to frequent this location almost daily when I worked down the street. The staff is always friendly and service is quick. Have been going here for a few months for lunch at work, and the food has been good. However, whenever I walk into the building I have been grossed out by the litter around their building. Cigarette butts, trash, feathers. I assumed they were a little behind in cleaning, but as time went by, I kept seeing the same garbage on the ground. So I started to pay more attention to the inside and began to notice the accumulation of stuff on the floor in the kitchen. I saw debris on the floor all around the grill. They don't clean up around their building, and they don't keep up on the kitchen floor. What is it like in the cooler, or storage area or the prep room in the back? This is owned by the same family who owns the Anania's on Congress St. in Portland. They have been a Portland institution since 1963, working hard and supporting local teams and causes forever. This review is for the meatball sub only. Run, run from this sub at the East Deering location this eveing. The bread was soggy,not toasted. The meatballs were ok. The woman running the register and the woman doing the cooking were bickering the entire time I was there. I asked for cheese on the sub, and was offered american cheese. I requested mozzarella and was given the tiniest amount of parmesan cheese which was sprinkled on the sub. I then requested that the sub be toasted. It was put in the oven just barely enough to warm through. Never again. The italian sandwiches have always been delicious. The bickering over cheese, warming the sub and the price of other customer's purchases was a real turn off.j read more

Giving it one star is generous. The blt sandwich I got was so dripping with bacon grease it was ridiculous. The bread was like putty. There was so much mayo and grease you couldn't even bite it. To top it all off it was wrapped in tin foil instead of the sandwich paper which made it even more soaked. Never will go back there again. Too bad, I like the one on congress st. read more
