Umm hell yes, this place is legit! Husband and I stopped in here on our way back from the long Labor Day weekend spent up north. I won't lie, it was hard to break away from our usual Fitger's stop, but a friend had mentioned this place so we decided to branch out and try new things. So despite being Labor Day, not only were they open, they were *busy*. We managed to snag one of the last tables in the back. Such a cool place, the menu has some tidbits of info on the back (important: no credit cards!). Lots of cool old pictures on the wall, mostly of ships (unsurprisingly given the location). There's a good variety of burgers but nothing like you'd find at say, Red Cow or G&D - I think this is a positive rather than a disappointment - I fucking LOVE blue cheese burgers, so that's what I got, with fried onions and bacon. They nailed it, my burger was perfect! Decent beer selection given the divey nature of the place. I went with a small Schell's something (Oktoberfest I think) and my husband got a large. The price is great also - 2 burgers, 2.5 beers (the large cost extra obvs) and an order of fries with tip and we paid $22 I think. Helluva deal. We'll be back! read more

I have to one star this place... I've been coming here for years, but I am sad to say this place has just gone down hill. The last time I was here the tables were all dirty. Forgivable, but the wait staff should have a rag to wipe them down. Even as tables turned over they made no attempt to clean them. They would just grab the trash off and wait for the next guests to sit at a dirty table. Our table had no napkins and was quite dirty... ok it's a dive bar I get it, but there has to be some standard. When the waitress brought out a pitcher of beer it spilled immediately everywhere due to the table shifting. With no napkins we couldn't clean it up. Paying our bill was difficult. We waited for a long while and then just decided to go up to the bar tender.... this lady is insanely rude and snapped at us. That's when I decided that I was done with this place. The time prior to this we didn't even get food on a Sunday afternoon when we waited 45 minutes for meat.... that's right folks... they didn't have meat... at a burger place, on a Sunday afternoon. We watched as people poured in and everyone was told that it would be a 20 minute wait on meat. This went on for 45 plus minutes and many people, ourselves included, just left. Every time we go to Duluth we stop in at the Anchor Bar. We go to Duluth often and have been stopping in at the Anchor Bar for many years. Two years ago, I gave the Anchor Bar a stellar review! Since then, it has been declining, and as of Saturday, July 30th, I have to submit a new review. HOW DISAPPOINTING!!! We walked in around 4:30 pm. Busy, but we have seen it a LOT busier. We have seen this place 3 deep waiting for a table and waiting outside! There were 2 spots at the bar, so we seated ourselves there. My husband had 2 drinks, I had water due to me being the driver. Ordered our burgers and fries from a male bartender who handed the order over to a female bartender. Since we were sitting at the bar, I saw them hang the ticket for the cook. The place started to clear out - tables were open. We waited and waited for our food. Waited and waited some more. The cook seemed to be playing with the tickets that were hanging more than she was cooking. I feared one of those tickets that she moved around was ours. I guess it was. After an hour wait, a gal brought food out and set it in front of us. I looked at it and said it was not ours, but thought it might be the guests next to us since we had struck up a conversation with them as they also were there an hour . They were there a little before us. The gal said that bought the food out said, "You figure it out! I'm busy!" WOW!!!! We don't even know the people next to us, but we will do your job for you. Passed the food to them, and as we did, noticed the burgers looked like hockey pucks! Burnt to a crisp.Then food was delivered to a couple who had been at the Anchor 20 minutes. Through this whole experience, one of the gal bartenders said, "oh it is a good thing you came in when you did, because we are running out of burgers. We only have 120 patties left." She was telling this to people on the phone, and others. You don't do that!! We never even got one of those "120 patties!" We decided we were done waiting, asked for our ticket for my husbands drinks. They asked again what we ordered and they couldn't even find our food ticket. So they charged us for one drink and NO APOLOGIES, NO OFFER TO GET OUR BURGERS OUT RIGHT AWAY, NO NOTHING!!! WOW!!! Rude, snippy and they should not have charged us at all!!! Place was run by a bunch of young kids - they don't care. And, they weren't even busy. Halfway through our waiting there were plenty of empty tables. By the way while sitting at the bar waiting for our food, I cleaned off two dead flies from the bar. YUCK!!! I am not happy, very disappointed, and won't be back. Neither will anyone else that we know that frequents the place. Years ago, and several times, the owner was doing the cooking and he even delivered the food himself sometimes. The food was good, came out quick, the owner was friendly and we enjoyed every second of our experience. My husband and I have been in the restaurant business almost our whole life. Not one thing was handled right. Not one!!! Blame it on COVID? Sad..... One more thing, you would be better off putting an outhouse outside. My husband said the Men's bathroom was worse than worse. My friend brought me here when we were looking for a bite and a beer. Needless to say, I really liked this spot. If you are looking somewhere for a nice place to take the kids and have a family meal or to have a romantic white table cloth candle lit dinner, get outta here! This place is your quintessential Superior dive bar, no time for the frills but thats why we love it! Who doesn't love a lowkey place you can escape the stresses of everyday life to just sit, unwind, and have a beer with a friend. The food here is phenomenal, especially for the price! As a college student, this is now my new favorite burger spot because not only are they great but most burgers are around 5 bucks! The fries here are to die for as well, fried with the skin on em! Extra crispy! Seasoned great! Just the way I like em! The decor pays homage to life on the lake. It breathes the community of Superior. Salt of the earth. Always has my eyes wandering around in admiration. They have some arcade games, pinball machines and even some slots and video poker I believe. This place was featured on Triple D (Diners, Drive Ins and Dives) and I can see why. A must stop if your looking for a hole in the wall bar with great food minus the frills. read more

Just in town for a night and wanted to find something that was different from the chain restaurants and away from the big crowds. Saw the pics on here and we knew instantly we had to go! We loved everything about this place!! We started off with a BIG beer and ended up ordering the double burger with fries. These burger patties were freshly made and we even watched the cook cut the potatoes for the fries. The atmosphere was inviting and cozy, and the conversation with our bartender was fun. Our bill was only $27 for all we got!! We will definitely be making this a stop we make anytime we are in town! read more

Anchor Bar is such a down home hole in the wall. The atmosphere is great, the burgers are delicious, and the price is right. They have $3 pints of beer and numerous burger concoctions. Also, they're not afraid to tell you like it is, right in their menu. If you've ever had those amazing Minnesota State Fair fries from that huge red building, well, Anchor's fries taste just like that and it's amazing!!! Our experience with our waitress was also fantastic. She sat down right at the table, she was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and it was just like talking with a friend. I had heard rumblings of this place from friends and co-workers that I MUST hit this place up when i'm in Duluth. Well, I finally stopped by this joint and boy was it an experience. Now, before I go on, be warned that you will NOT get 5 star service; you won't even get 1 star service. This place does NOT take credit cards, cash/check only. You only go to Anchor Bar for great burgers and cheap pitchers of beer. It's not a place you go for Sunday Brunch with your family. You've. Been. Warned. We parked out back and made our way through the make-shift temp back door, cigarette/spit bucket included. Once you walk in, it's dark, slightly damp and you're afraid you'll catch something just sitting on any surface. It's seat yourself and chances are you'll have to share a table with a few people (we did!). The menu is simple, order a burger, get some fries and order your choice of cheap beer (bottle, tap, pitcher). We ordered the Bacon Burger, Pineapple Burger, a bunch of fries and a pitcher of Grainbelt. Served with no smile, major attitude and the feeling that you were NOT important. Beer arrived quickly with glasses slammed on the table (like SLAMMED). The food arrived shortly after that. The first thing I noticed was half the bacon was burnt and for fear of getting a bandaid in my burger, I didn't say anything; this isn't the place to complain about ANYTHING. Regardless of burnt bacon (black and brittle) I dug into the glorious burger. Simple, greasy, filled with flavor; something that will hit the spot every time. The fries, what can I say about the fries except they're AMAZING. For all the food and beer we got, the total bill was $14.75. That's right. $14.75. We laughed when the bill arrived and thought it was a joke or that our amazing waitress missed something. The food is great, the service is awful and the atmosphere is nothing you can find anywhere else. read more

There were no tables to sit at so we sat at the bar. Waited 20 minutes just to get a drink and to order burgers. As we sat there for an hour waiting for the burgers the staff were so rude, talked about how much they hated there jobs there. As we sat at the bar you can see where the cook is making the fries and burgers we noticed as she came out of the kitchen she had a Cigerette hanging out of her mouth (yes the Cigerette was lite), sweat pouring down her face dripping on the food long stringy greasy hair not plulled back we got really grossed out, we canceled our order paid for the drinks and left. This place rules. I spent the previous weekend in Duluth and upon arrival we headed here for a burger and a beer to start the night. The decor of the place plays a nautical theme, which makes sense considering the namesake. When ordering a "big" beer, I assumed it meant the usual 22 oz fare, but when they say big.....they mean it. 34 ounces of goodness for $2.75. The chairs we sat in were old barber chairs, complete with levers and a swivel. The food is pretty good. Far, far better than your average bar burger. They do some interesting variations as well. My friend had a burger with cream cheese and olives atop it. Cheap, too. I think for the three of us it was around $21. Other perks of this bar include $2.50 pitchers on Monday night, and every night after 10 PM. Its basically an alcoholics paradise. Also, mystery shots for $1.50!!! Is it Cutty Sark? Is it paint thinner? Who knows! Where else can you spend $1.50 for such mysterious excitement? I didnt participate in this mysterious sexy experiment, but I will next time I promise. Went back a few weeks after my last review, I don't know that I will rush back next time I come home. The service is really poor. We sat on the patio, knowing that service is slow out there I went to the bar to order I stood there for over 5 minutes watching the bartender walk to the back texting or doing something on his phone. I'm sorry if your bar is packed put your phone away! The waitress excused herself and before giving me a chance to move out of her way plowed past me with a big sigh. I put our order for four in got a few beers and went outside to join the group. We sat at a dirty table for 10 plus minutes with the waitstaff repeatedly walking past. We finally had to stop someone walking past to clear the table, then they only took part of the dirty stuff, I put the rest on a table next to us when the people at it left. When the food came it wasn't done correctly fried onions on a burger that wanted none of couse all melted into the cheese, and no onions on another. We didn't bother asking for corrections. My burger was incredibly dry and overcooked. One last thing that really irked me, there was an elderly couple sitting behind me. The waitress didn't take the time to give them any customer service. They were trying to ask questions about the menu and she cut them off multiple times in a very rude tone. I think I would have walked out if she talked to me in that manner. Anyhow it was a good burger joint I think I'll take my business down the road to the Who's Bar or just stay in Duluth next time. There are many other delicious burgers to try. read more

A tiny little bar and burger joint, located right in Superior. This place is delicious. They make all there burgers fresh for you, and they taste immaculate! There isn't very much seating, so when this place gets busy, it gets packed! I was here once, and the power went out on us, it was funny, there was no power, but luckily for us, we had just gotten our food right before it had happened! We got to eat by candle light, and if you've been in here, you know that there is no window light, it is all man-made lights on the ceiling! Anyways we stayed and ate, why would we leave? It is a sorta dingy place to go eat and drink, but it is totally one of those fun little whole in the wall burger and bar places that you cannot pass up.. good food, tiny place.. really, super good! read more

This place works on so many levels its kind of like the Sears Tower of dive bars. From just a bar perspective, this place would be great. I ordered a "small beer" and the waitress brought me 34 ounces of Summit EPA. She noticed that this was in fact a "large" beer. She charged me the small beer price of $2.00(for about 16 ounces) instead of the large beer price of $2.75. Throw in the fact that this place makes a pretty good burger, complete with hand-cut french fries, and you really can't go wrong here. The fries are a little bit greasy and soft, as opposed to crunchy so some people might knock the Anchor because of that and the wait staff kind of leaves you alone to your conversation instead of being in-your-face. I tend to like these two traits, but others might not I realize. The best part is however that a burger, fries and a beer costs about as much as a burger, fries and soda would at your average fast food chain. Get here soon, before their episode of DIners, Drive-Ins and Dives airs and seating gets even harder to come by. read more

First off I don't give many 5 star reviews. However Anchor Bar earned it. I've eaten here 3 times and every time has been great. They have the best burgers I've ever had, anywhere. The fries are homemade and you get a heaping portion. The buns look and taste homemade but I assume they get them from a baker. A California burger and fries is $4.25. Perfect burgers, perfect price. When I first started coming here, they had budweiser on Tap for 85 cents, pop was a dollar. That should say it all, but it really doesn't. They have an extensive bottle selection of beer, cheap mixed drinks that are strong, and dont ask for a frozen drink. To enjoy the anchor, one must be willing to put up with different type of service, and even possibly insulted. I once asked about the super rope behind the bar and if people actually bought it, I was told to shut the F*&* up. Normally, I'd leave, but instead, everyone just laughed. Sadly they replaced their jukebox with a digital monstrosity, I wish they kept the original juke box. One night we took over juke box and played a lot of polka for some reason, this did not sit well with the wait staff, hey, you put it in there...now I go in and hear the black eye peas or katie perry, and I weep inside. Their menu consists of Burgers and "other grub". I've only had burgers. I get Anchor Supreme, which is delicious, but they have burger with cashews on it and it's very good. Their fries are fresh cut. As to seating, it's usually packed and that ass hat guy fieri may have ruined it by showing up, but I either went for the bar, barber chairs, or the "library". Just a warning, there are no windows. So if you go for lunch, expect to be blinded by the sun when you come out. read more

I have no idea why this place has such a great reputation, or any good reviews ! I would give it 3 stars for character, with all the great lakes, maritime decor, and it is cheap, but that is it. The burgers were overcooked, dry, unseasoned, and tasteless, on an untoasted , cold bun. The fries may be fresh cut, but they were soggy, undercooked and greasy ! Maybe the regular cook had the day off ? I am guessing that is not the case, judging by the dirt, on his shirt. I have got to think that any other, 100+ dive bars in Superior, has a better burger ! read more

The Anchor is one of the more fun bars in Superior, and a great place to eat in a dive/greasy spoon sort of way.... With a Great Lakes nautical theme going on. Burgers, fries and sandwiches only - but they're darn fine if that's your style. Beer is cheap and plentiful, but be warned they don't accept credit cards - also the ATM claims a 2.50 fee and charges 3.50. All the crazy antique decorations will distract you sufficiently, though and the sassy bartenderesses may help. read more

We placed our order. The wait was long. Our drinks were never re-filled. Our order was actually delivered to another table and left with them. When the waiter realized he delivered our order to another table and went, retrieved it and tried to deliver it to us. We refused. They re-cooked (maybe) and then provided our order. Burger was so so and fries were soggy. I am not a clean freak, but this place was far from reasonably clean. I have to say, I will not stop back next time I am in the area. read more

This place is a hidden treasure. No, the atmosphere is not typical cruise ship fare, but if you're going out for a burger, this place is it! Burgers, burgers, and more burgers. Probably the biggest burger menu you'll find anywhere and they're fresh hand-made patties, not some frozen horse meat hockey pucks you'll get in some joints. They hand cut their fries per order too which is really the icing on the cake. Great food, small town service, and the low prices don't hurt either. Delicious. read more

Traveling through for some hockey on a Fri afternoon. Thought it would be a good quick bite based on some TV coverage they got as a Dive. And I would highly agree it is 110% dive, hell 200% Just two of us but no place to sit, must have been the lunch rush or tourists. One that was quickly obvious was they were SERIOUSLY under staffed with a poor attitude waitress. Seat yourself, named a table. Dirty and wet, good thing there are paper towels on the table to clean it. but without some soap you won't get that grease level off. Waitress walked by twice, complaining and didn't say a word. Was about to go to the bartender to order myself when he came to the table. Ordered two burgers and fries, one a bacon and the other a blue cheese. along with a beer. Beer came quick, with it being so packed and understaffed, the ticket times were long. Finally got the burger and fries, looked and smelled good, good grease, ordered a choco milk and then had to remind the waitress twice to give it. Asked for the bill as well the 2nd time to get a move on. The objects ALL AROUND the bar are interesting, unique and probably picked up from every garage sale in Superior WI. Being a great dive bar does not mean you have to be a messy, dirty place. Service can still be quick and the help can be nice even if swamped and under staffed. Burgers were very good, as were the home fries, the blue cheese seemed a little different and the big beer was excellent. Would i return yes I would but would want to try a different time or day to see how it goes. Can really see it as a FUN place to hang out with a few friends. Heard about this place from some buddies who went to college up here. I was told it was a dive with great burgers, and that is exactly what it is. Compared to the twin cities the prices are astoundingly low. A third pound burger is around 3 bucks and a gigantic one pounder is under 6 bucks! Where can you get a burger and a beer for less than $5-6? The Anchor, sir. The Anchor has a nautical theme, complete with a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald. Don't expect overly perky waitstaff.
