Stopped at Anchor Tavern on our way to Tampa's Liberty by the Bay Celebration and were pleasantly surprised. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it's cool, dark, and packed with regulars. The bar dominates the space, with a few tables along the edges. Service was quick, and drink options included Guinness, a local IPA, and a canned Surfside vodka cocktail. Their tap list isn't posted anywhere, so you have to peek toward the back to see what's available. The menu is classic pub fare at moderate prices. We tried three of their seven burgers- Classic Cheeseburger, Cajun Nacho Burger, and Portobello Burger-plus fries and a huge portion of onion rings. Everything was tasty and well prepared. Brooklyn handled a very complex situation tonight with poise and grace. A drunk male individual was berating her and being extremely disrespectful when she was trying to be professional. Everybody in the bar realized this dude was a fool, and Brooklyn stayed composed, kept doing her job and made it clear that he is not welcome here. He left after she objectively told him that he has been rude, disrespectful and nasty. She kept her composure and continued giving excellent service to patrons after this incident. read more

I went there tonight, ordered 3 plates, entree w a side for each, looked at my order 5 mins after picking it up...#1 not one plate had sauce on anything. #2 i received a rare burger when it was supposed to be well done, i called back to ask for a replacment and that i can also bring in the burger for proof, they said no need to. i go pick up my replacement & its just a literal burger pattie, no bread, no sauce, no lettuce, no cheese, no pickle just a literal pattie wrapped in parchment paper. i have worked in the food business for over 6 years and have never seen or dealt with a "solution" like so... i DONT recommend unless you want to be absolutely played like a fool... read more

Great place! Anchor Bar is not the biggest of places. They have bar seating for about 15 and table seating for about another 15. But the atmosphere is great! Somehow you are always able to find a spot. This is defintely a dive bar but their food is great and the servers are friendly. Everything on the menu is good! I want to share a very painful experience I had at Anchor Tavern on Davis Island on February 15th, 2025. As an African American man new to the community, I went there hoping to build connections and enjoy the local atmosphere. Instead, I was racially profiled by a waitress who publicly accused me of skipping out on tabs and not tipping in the past -- something I have never done. Despite my calm attempts to explain that she had me confused with someone else, she continued to berate me in front of other patrons. What made this worse was how others in the bar chose to side with her, even positioning themselves in ways that felt threatening and intimidating. The humiliation of being wrongly singled out because of my race, especially in front of strangers, was deeply traumatic. I paid my tab and left quietly that day. Later, several patrons confirmed that I was not the person the waitress accused me of being. When I called to address the issue with the owner, I was told that my concerns were "not that serious," and that I was no longer welcome. Not once did anyone from the tavern express any concern or apology for the harm caused or the danger of being falsely accused in public. In a time when being an African American man still carries real risks when misunderstood, this was an especially frightening and isolating experience. I share this not out of malice, but in the hope that others are treated with the fairness, dignity, and respect every person deserves -- no matter their race or background. read more

It was Saturday morning on vacation, we were down on the Riverwalk and there was not a single place open for a Bloody Mary cocktail. We finally searched out this hidden gem! WOW!! Emily was our bartender and the much anticipated Bloody Mary didn't disappoint. We have had our share along the journey from CA to FL and this by far was the best. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! They are rude and clearly racist. I was here a couple days ago and only came in because I had to use the bathroom really bad. I didn't want to be stereotyped because I'm a younger black woman, so I told him I'll buy something while I wait for the bathroom (and it's just the polite thing to do). The bathroom opened up quicker than I thought so I told him I'd pay him and order when I came out. I left my ID in my car and he wouldn't accept a picture (totally understandable, we don't do that where I work either) so I went to get my ID and came back. He then proceeded to say "you have to leave, you're banned from the bar". Me: " wym I'm banned?" He goes to say, " one of my bartenders just texted me your picture and said you are banned. Every time you come in here you cause a ruckus etc." then started to get disrespectful. I said"I've literally NEVER stepped foot in this bar, have NEVER seen this bar, have NEVER heard of this bar and NEVER knew it existed. I don't even come over to this area". He proceeds to be rude and disrespectful. I left cause I didn't want to be in that funky weird bar anyway, I was just trying to be polite and not just use the bathroom without buying something. So I take a video outside and tell the people by the window to turn their bodies so they won't be in the video. He proceeds to walk after me, after I'm already OUTSIDE and take a video of me. Then calls the police on me. Again, I'm OUTSIDE. Unprofessional, unprovoked and I'm not the first person to feel their racism and prejudice. They have a couple reviews about it. TERRIBLE place, and not all black people look alike. (But he was lying about the picture because he didn't show it once and again, I've never been to this bar or even on that block. Our fourth and final stop on our Tampa wing tour was at Anchor bar in downtown Tampa. We got here before it got busy thankfully. We went with 10 hot wings and 10 Cajun dry rub. Their buffalo sauce is unique as it has a slight sweetness to it that appears to be honey. The Cajun dry rub was a tad bit salty for me, but both of the wings were enjoyed. They had a good crisp to the skin and were well cooked. Our server was nice and I would definitely revisit if in the area and wanting wings. read more

It pains me to leave two stars after such a good night but it resulted in unnecessary pain. My group stumbled into the Anchor Bar after a wild night of hockey at Amalie. We ordered drinks and 50 chicken wings with a few different sauces on the side. My husband told the bartender that he has celiac disease, and we were told the wings would be fine. Unfortunately, he suffered through the painful allergic reactions to gluten just hours later. Absolutely without a doubt something served to him at the Anchor Bar. It may have been the wings, garlic parm sauce, ranch, or bbq sauce. In the moment we all enjoyed the wings and devoured all fifty of them. Not bad for just $39. I would recommend this spot for pre-gaming or post-gaming but the incredibly irresponsible bartender turned us off completely. When anyone in food service hears the words "celiac disease," they should know what that means and take the proper precautions. read more

A dive bar that was a home run (Go Rays, plenty of TVs) after my friend & I decided to celebrate early voting at the Amalie Arena on 10/23 for a couple glasses of beer each. The bestest part? Our Yuengling (Draft) was only $3.50/each on a FriYAY! Of course, they were busy with full seating at the bar and tables including the couple they had outside that (This place is small!) when I went to the bathroom & my friend came along, someone tried to snag our corner spot with full beers left on the table! Our server came to check on us after getting her attention (They only have 1 or 2 people working). I can't comment on the food since I came from eating at Yeoman's, but you can also grab pizza from down the road! The restaurant is at full capacity amidst Covid-19 & you must wear a mask when you aren't eating or drinking. There's one bathroom to share between men/women. read more

Writing this review based on a small group dining during quieter hours. This is a very small bar and if there's an event at Curtis Hixon or it's Friday night, there is a good chance it'll be packed and you won't find a seat. Just a heads up. My group of 4 friends and I stopped here before a Tampa Theatre show to grab a drink and a bite to eat. The menu is not overwhelming which I love and they keep it to the point. Prices are really good for being in the heart of downtown. That includes drink prices! We shared some appetizers and the waitress was totally honest when she told us that the wrong food item was made by accident. Not only was she open about it but she offered it to us so it didn't go to waste. Now THAT is fantastic service! Back in town on Friday for the Air show stopped in to my favorite bars in town. Boy the place was hopping as usual and the locals were holding up the bar. Pete the cook was working and I knew that I could get a perfect burger so I put my order in and all of the sudden a side show started with a customer at a table yelling at the bartender I thought it was funny because nobody was talking to her and I thought she worked there because she attempted to go behind the bar . And Gianna told her to leave and she started cursing at the customers and said she she'll never come back. I stop in every time I'm in town and everyone is pleasant and nice. The Anchor Bar is a chill laid back bar or well laid out, clean bar that is non smoking which I like the most. Clean, roomy and with a not so crowded that is a staple here in Tampa. Nick and Hillary are great bartenders that keep the good vibes going with cold drinks and great personalities. The bar area is set up well with a nice bar top that has great views of patrons. This is your typical bar and there is nothing to rave about. Actually was on the more quite side for a bar. Music is solid with a jukebox ready to roll, the menu is amazing for bar food.
