Love this place!!! First time but not the last. Best high quality Chinese food around.

Generally enjoy food from here, however today I ordered food for take-out and found a metal shaving in my food... Pretty disappointed. Specifically had Singapore mei fun. Not sure if the metal shaving was in the takeout tray when they added food to it or some construction was going on in the restaurant. The egg roll was good at least... Not impressed. The dumplings were rubbery and had a frozen food feel. The sesame chicken was equally rubbery and incredibly generic.. you know the kind you have 4 or 5 bites of and then get bored of it.. and it goes in the fridge.. and then the garbage. It's moderately expensive and exceptionally average Chinese food. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I was optimistic, it had very good reviews and seemed like it might be better that the other mediocre Chinese restaurants in the area. The place was small, but organized well and the dining area was clean. The service started out OK, and then went down hill. We ordered our food and started to wait. The place was not that busy, but it took a while for our food to come out. When it came out, it was cold - room temperature. It must have been prepared and sat around because the staff were not attentive. In addition, my first bite, (a piece of chicken), was raw - gross! Fortunately, the rest of the dish was OK and mostly cooked. Normally, I would have sent the food back, but we were all so hungry we ate the cold food and agreed we would never return. It was our first night in our new home in SJ and we ordered delivery - this place came highly recommended.. we order the usual take out fare and sad to say - it was not even ordinary. The egg rolls were awful.. the soup, blah, the scallion pancakes greasy, and the Singapore Mei Fun was lacking in spice. The meal was less than expected. The food is not authentic Chinese food, but it might appeal to those who believe Chinese food consists of General Tso on fried rice. When I came across Ancient Ginger's menu, I was intrigued because they listed some legitimate Chinese dishes. So far, I've tried the following: Crispy Prawn with Walnut - The shrimp is covered in corn starch and deep fried. The shrimp quality was decent, but it's a far cry from the fresh, firm jumbo shrimp that this dish is usually associated with. The glazed walnuts were delicious. The dish came four tiny broccoli florets rather than a full bed of broccoli. But what ruined this dish was the overly sweet sauce that you might find on a dish of General Tso. Sizzling Grilled Steak - This was bad by any standard. Steak should be medium-rare, but this was closer to medium-well. It was dry and flavorless. And it was pre-cut with the grain, not against the grain. These factors made if awfully tough. The little bits of vegetables on the sizzling platter was drenched in an overly salty sauce. Singapore Rice Noodles - This came closest to the real deal. The ingredients were there, but it lacked any real kick in the curry. It's hard to blame Chinese restaurants in the area; their foods appeal to the palate of their biggest audience. When I was there, there wasn't a single Asian diner. As such, even their more traditional dishes end up with too much sugar and salt. I should point out that the staff is friendly. The waiter served the wrong order for the lady in the table next to us. He placed a new order in, but the lady had to wait as the man and the child at the table were served. When her food did come, the male customer gave the waiter an attitude, declaring he wasn't paying for that dish. The waiter was clearly disappointed, but agreed to pay for their late dish. Mistakes happen. If making another dish will take too long, tell them to cancel the order. Otherwise, pay for what you eat. Don't try to get a free meal out of it. And honestly, they should have taken the first dish they were served rather than the food-candy they actually ordered. read more

The food is very good always tasting very fresh. Usually get the sesame chicken that has a crisp outside crunch like no other Chinese place around. They get 4 stars because it's a bit more pricey than the rest but you pay for what you get! read more

Lovely place with such a portion! Not mentioning how reasonable the price it is! If the cost of cooking by yourself is about the same as dining in, why not go for the latter? Their menu is quite diverse, and is definitely a vegetarian friendly place. Another great thing about Ancient Ginger is that it operates even during the federal holidays. When everything is shutting down around, you would be more than happy to find such a sweet 'shelter'. read more

Had soup, nice. Had general tsao's and it was the pre made kind. No taste!!! Not returning.

Messed up our delivery order and when we called to let them know the gentlemen over the phone said he couldn't understand us when we placed the order. We ask for the correct item to be ordered which takes another hour to be delivered. The delivery drive then won't leave our residence as he is unsure if the credit card we just used is on file. We call the restaurant to give them our credit card yet again and the driver keeps ringing our doorbell with our dog barking and a toddler trying to sleep!!!! They charged us another 10 bucks for the item they messed up. Will not be ordering from them again! Poor communication and bad customer service read more

Good restaurant! Delicious! Good combination of American food and Chinese taste. Somebody said that he loves the sesame chicken, zuozong chicken, all kinds of chicken of this restaurant~ I have ordered the delivery food and it is very fast!! The delivery boy was very cute! Wonderful! read more

Used to be great. My husband and I think that the place was sold. We no longer see any of the people we know and the food is terrible. We used to love this place and now we just can't eat it. We just ordered for the last time today. There was no taste and we just can't keep hoping it will improve. They don't admit to new ownership, but we no longer like the food. read more

I discovered this restaurant this week. I liked it so much I returned just two days later. The first day I ordered a House Special called "For Three" with shrimp, chicken and scallops in a delicious 'special sauce'. I was pleasantly surprised that it also came with snow peas, a few bits of asparagus, water chestnuts and shiitake mushrooms. It was absolutely delicious. The portion is very generous and I wish they gave more than the small bowl of rice to go with it. It was mild but called "spicy". I ordered some hot sauce on the side which came in a small bowl and made it extremely tasty. Next time I went (two days later), I ordered beef with string beans. The sauce was delicious, beef strips quite tender, string beans seemed very fresh and cooked just right (not too crisp nor too soggy). I got some hot sauce again and added it and it made it even more delicious to me, again this came as a mild sauce. This is the best Chinese food I have had in this area. They are also very friendly, which makes dining in pleasant. read more

When i iread some of the unfavorable reviews, I do not believe these people have been to Ancient Ginger. My husband and I and another couple have been going there to eat almost every week for many years, and though sometimes the food is better than others, we have never been disappointed with any of the meals. My friends are vegetarians and they always comply with their requests of making their meal with tofu instead of meat ($1.00 extra) but who is counting when the complete dinner is only $9.95. Very hit or miss with each dish each time I have come here. Tonight I had the vegetable dumplings which were pretty awful (very doughy and almost tasted fishy) and the chicken with peanuts which was pretty good, standard Chinese restaurant quality. This place def needs some refurbishing. read more

Ancient Ginger has consistently had the best Chinese food I've found throughout my 5 years living on LI. Very high quality food, good portions, reasonably priced, polite staff, etc. I moved out of the area and still travel to this place often, as they never disappoint. read more

good Chinese food but horrible horrible service. Food takes forever to deliver to stony brook.. it took 2 hours once. The delivery guy came and didn't apologize, didn't even say hi and he doesn't even say thank you even though I left a generous tip. This guy stares at you like you owe him your life. Terrible guy to deal with i swear. I would order from here again if it wasn't for that rude delivery guy. The least you can do is say hi and thank you (and i know he speaks English). read more

Awful customer service. Just ordered from them and waited over an hour, only to have the delivery man refuse my money. Their menu said delivery over $15 is free (and so did the woman on the phone when I first ordered), but the delivery man held my food hostage until I gave him a $3.00 tip (which I refused to do, after which he drove away). We called back and they refused to bring the food to us if we didn't pay a $3.00 tip, which is pretty ridiculous considering that this order was so late and even $2.00 is generous. Order from somewhere that has actual customer service and actually gets things in on time instead of a place that will yell at you for refusing to obey fake laws and tip an overly late and rude driver. read more

I heard such great things about this restaurant but I can't say I'm that impressed. The food was just alright. The wait staff was what upset me the most. The waiter was not very friendly and he seemed a bit impatient with my grandfather. It took quite some time just to get water. I asked to have everything from my plate wrapped up and when I opened it at home, found that they did not wrap everything. read more

Love Ancient Ginger as does the entire family. Love to tell friends how much we love it and will often say "I'm picking up the good Chinese tonight" if giving a treat for ordering in. My daughter has been known to arrange dinner out with friends as soon as she hears somebody has never been here. She makes it her mission to be sure all have tried and enjoyed. The staff is always so nice and have enjoyed every item we have ever ordered. If I must pick a favorite I would say the dumplings but everything is good!!!! read more
