Finally managed to try their pizza. For those of you who aren't aware that Andrea Pizza is only open for lunch (something like 10-3). I managed to order delivery using a third party. The pizza itself stood up to my east coast upbringing. The pizza itself is at the right size and taste conducive to the famous triangle fold. I've been here twice for pizza and I've been happy each time. This is about as close to NY pizza as I've gotten in Minnesota, so it's a refreshing change. I have missed giant slices of tasty pizza. Now I need only a good subway to ride when I'm eating it. The guys here are friendly enough and you do get a free drink if you buy two slices of pizza. I take one home, for The Boy LOVES it. We're a pizza family, so we're not going to waste our time. The sausage and pepperoni are all I've had thus far. We LOVE this combination. Will have to try more, as it all looks good. I plan on seeing if I can purchase an entire pie when next I leave work early. They close around 3, like most skyway food joints, so you have to plan ahead. If you can eat two slices of pizza from this place, you're either a dude or you might have an overeating problem. According to the sign out front, for a little over $5 you can buy two slices of pizza (per person) and get a free fountain pop. That sounds like a great deal, but not one that I see myself partaking of any time in the near future. I couldn't even finish my one slice of pepperoni and I'm not some windblown kitty who picks at my food like a little bird, especially if it's covered in melted cheese. I love thin crust so I like New York style pizza. A lot. And Andrea Pizza was okay. But it wasn't great. I doubt I'd ever wake up from a hangover and crave their pizza, which is the truest litmus test for a good slice of pie. read more

A buddy and I decided to head out from Target HQ and get something for lunch. My friend suggested Andrea's Pizza and I said to myself, "New restaurant, oh yeah!" Andrea is the owner and server of the huge slices of 'za and there are about 7 options available on the counter. For $7 you get two huge slices and a fountain drink. They had Diet Mt. Dew on tap, which is always a great thing. Now all we need is Diet Code Red on tap, and it would be heaven. But I digress. I ordered the buffalo chicken pizza which started out with a nice bite to it, but kind of faded out over time. I would have liked more chicken, but it was still tasty. The crust is amazing with lots of good doughy thinness, kind of a contradiction in terms, but I was told that it was very New Yorky, if that's a word. The second slice was pepperoni with bell peppers, this was my favorite of the three I tried. There was a wonderful balance between the spiciness of the pepperoni and the sweetness of the pepper. Very yummy. My buddy bought a third slice, BBQ chicken, which we decided to split in half. The BBQ was sweet and there was plentiful cheese that adorned the pizza. It was my second favorite of the three, but overall they were all good. The cashier is also an owner, Andrea's wife, and she seemed nice. The line about 12:15 was about 15 deep and was steady until we left. Lots of laughs during the lunch, plentiful seating, good pizza, and the day before a two week vacation all lent itself to good times. read more

I don't know why, but when I was little nub, I always missed the morning school bus. To make the situation more pathetic- it drove past my house. If I wanted to still make it to school that day via elementary school transportation, I had to literally run to the last stop in the neighborhood. Late was my name, missing the school bus was my game. One day I made it to the bus stop on time and the bus never came. Thirty minutes later, I finally decided to walk back home and called my dad at his office to tell him I missed the bus. I was a Latchkey child and sometimes didn't have parents home in the morning (or evening) :( . My father asked me why I missed the bus. I told him I didn't because the bus never came. He immediate responded by asking me if any of the other kids were waiting at the stop by our house. I said no. He said, "You missed the bus". I may have only been about ten years old, but I understood the logic. I told my dad I had made it to the bus stop on time and therefore assumed the bus could not have arrived. He told me: "You should never assume." I know... what the hell does a kid and a school bus have to do with Andrea Pizza? I'm getting there. Once upon a time I lived in San Francisco. A long line of people coming outside of restaurants in the Financial District was a pretty good indication that there is some darn good eats inside. I made the mistake of assuming this logic was transferable to restaurants in the Skyways in Minneapolis. Another example of why assuming can have unfortunate consequences. You will find a long line at Andrea Pizza during lunch because people are hungry, not because it is great food. There is pizza and there is good pizza. Andrea Pizza is just pizza. I ate two pieces and felt like purging myself afterward. I love to gorge myself on amazing food but feel cheated and hostile when I do so with food that is just average. I cannot believe there isn't a review for this place in Yelp! Seriously, more people in the TC need to get on board. I know people go there because it is always crowded during lunchtime. Anyways, getting to the point. This place is great. I lived in NYC for 5 years. This basically means that my pizza consumption for the 5 years after I moved away from the big apple has been pretty low. This is because most pizza joints west of Jersey are pretty mediocre. Of course, most major cities will have that one place that can do it right (well, Chicago doesn't count because they have there own thing going on over there). In the Twin Cities, this place is it. I used to think Mama's was really good. It is good, but it isn't as good as this place. Keep it simple. One of the best places to get pizza in the downtown skyway! For lunch, you can get 2 slices (LARGE slices) and a soda for $7 or 1 slice, a side salad and a soda for $7. There aren't many places in the skyway where you can get that much food for only $7! Every time I'm there, Andrea Gambino is always there with a huge smile, loving what he does. It doesn't get any better than that, right?! When the guy that's serving you pizza loves what he does, then you know he puts that same amount of love into the za that he's giving you. My favorite slice is the Cajun Chicken. Can never go wrong with that! My usual is Beef Taco and Cajun Chicken, a lunch of epic proportions. As a skyway rat who generally spends her lunch hour working out, rather than dining out, I spent several years walking by this little gem before actually dining at Andrea's Pizza. What made me turn? The fact that no matter what, there is always a line. Luckily for its hungry patrons, it moves really quickly. Like many, I'm particular about my pies. I prefer two types--delicate, crunchy thin crust (think Dulono's) or pillowy crusts that are yeasty, airy and light. On the other end of the spectrum, I hate a dense or overly greasy crust (Pizza S*ut's, I mean, Pizza Hut's pizza is the epitome of gross for me). Andrea's Pizza's crust is perfection and of the yeasty, airy variety. Seriously, if they just served crust with nothing on it, I'd eat it up. For the most part, Andrea's sells pizza by the slice ($4/slice if you have anything more than plain cheese), which makes sense, as this place caters to the DT lunch crowd and is only open during the lunch hour. You can, though, get whole pizzas (big or extra, super big) from them, which are divine! I have ordered whole pies to take home and enjoy with the hubby all weekend long (they reheat perfectly in toaster oven or the oven), and have had Andrea's cater events for work (they did an outstanding job and better yet, our employees were thrilled with the change-up from the usual sandwich and chips thing). Another great thing about Andrea's is that they have all kinds of pizzas, so no matter what you crave, you're likely to find satisfaction here. There are the usual pizzas (sausage and pepperoni, marghartia, Hawaiian) and the not-so-common (gyro, macaroni and cheese). Being that the slices are HUGE (NY-style), one will fill you up to the "just right" state of satiety, but it's definitely not a problem to eat two, especially if you're got a big appetite. The icing on the cake with this place is that it's family run, so the people behind the counter (at the LaSalle location) are Mom, Dad and son, as well as a number of sidekicks. They're your stereotypical Italians--funny, loud and they just love their customers. I only wish they were open in the evenings! Don't even try asking, though. According to Pops, he works more than enough hours in taking care of the lunch crowd and in seeing how they've expanded in DT Mpls (three locations now, the newest being in Gavidae Commons), they're doing just fine. read more

Delicious and friendly is how I would describe Andrea Pizza. I know that may be a little confusing, as one of those adjectives describes food and the other describes a person, and they're not really interchangeable (for MOST people, anyway), but that's my description and I'm sticking to it! I came here during my lunch hour at work and loved the variety it had to offer. The owner is so nice (hence the "friendly" aspect), offering recommendations and a little conversation despite the crazy frenzy known as the lunch rush. My fave has to be the meatball marinara pizza, but I hear that the gyro pizza is their specialty. I never got to sample it, as it goes fast, but I am anxious to go back. Another awesome bonus? Crushed ice! Soooooo much better than cubed, it keeps your free soda cold longer and makes it feel a little like a slushie, in a good way. And you can enjoy the ice afterward without freezing your mouth on a huge ice cube or breaking your teeth. (Am I the only one who likes eating ice after drinking a beverage? Maybe.) Tip: Go early in the lunch hour to avoid the long line. Not to say it's not worth the wait, but maybe you're in a hurry. I don't know your life. read more

This is by far my favorite pizza by the slice place in the Downtown Skyways. The slices are really big and are the closest thing to New York or East Coast style pizza I've yet had in the Twin Cities. I actually had a very similiar slice of pizza on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, so this place is definetely very authentic. The prices are reasonable and there is a special where if you buy 2 slices you get a free soda with free refills. I don't usually drink soda but I drink it here, for some reason the soda fountains in certain places taste better than others.This is one of the places that I think has good tasting fountain sodas (Dr Pepper here is great). I also like the dining atmosphere, and there is a counter attached to large windows in which you can look outside and watch the snow falling during the winter, really nice. I used to walk by this place almost everyday since it is located pretty close to the school that I went to. The smell always bothered me, but one day, I was dragged in there with some friends. They swore that place was good. I decided to try it, even though my previous perception was very, very wrong.. It wasn't anything special.. A giant slice of pizza for dirt cheap. It was a good deal after all. I ended up being boring, and opting for a pepperoni piece since I wasn't too sure on the place. It was pretty good. Overall, the place is decent. Everyday for the last few months, I've had to walk by this place on my way to/from work and resist the urge to pick up a slice or two of delicious pizza. They have a bunch of flavors (like 15-20) of them everyday in a quick "grab and go" setup. The service is quick and really friendly but the lines can get REALLY LONG at peak hours (usually between 11-1 on weekdays) The standard flavors are all great but the specialty ones are certainly something else- try the Cajun Chicken or Chicken Alfredo, those are two of my favorites in addition to the Sausage/pepperoni combo. They have good pizza and lots of crazy types (ie. gyro, Mac and cheese, Cajun chicken, buffalo chicken, and much more). I have not had a bad one yet. Being super new to the great city of Minneapolis, I thought it a good idea to forgo my usual choice of Dominos to try some hometown pie instead. Andrea pizza came up as a favorable choice for those shopping for good eats on "grubhub". I gave it a whirl. I got a personal sized build your own pizza with pepperoni, sausage, green pepper, and onion. First off, I noticed both the crispiness and chewiness of the crust. I really love when the crust on a pizza is both crispy and chewy. Andrea may have the best crust I've ever tasted. Next, and here is where Andrea only receives 3 stars from me-- next, I noticed the sauce. This sauce is thin and a bit watery. I am a fan of a sauce that is hearty and well distributed on the pizza. Otherwise, the pizza ends up being a bit too dry for me. The pizza I ordered was a bit dry based on the sauce being way too thin, and not well distributed at all. This was a pretty big shame, as this pizza could have been the best I've had if it weren't for the sauce. The sausage was delightfully peppery with big flavor. The veggies were cooked well, and liberally garnished to the point of brimming off the pie. The cheese was mild, yet able to taste. Overall this pizza was five-star pizza, if the sauce wasn't so disappointing. I would order it again. However, my search for the perfect Minneapolis pizza pie is not over. read more

A Skyway (and Target HQ luncher) staple. The pizza is fresh, huge, and tasty. Mr. Andrea is friendly-yet-surly, expecting quick ordering and no questions a la Seinfeld's soup nazi. He tends to love most girls though, so you may be able to get away with one question about the ingredients or wait time for cheese, but not both. So ration your question-asking. I love the cheese and the pepperoni, but I tend to be a stick-with-the-basics pizza orderer. The BBQ chicken is great too, and all my friends seem to love the gyro and the chicken/bacon/ranch, so they're probably also good. At $5 for one slice and a soda, it's a pretty good deal. There are a couple other specials, which I think are in the realm of $7 for two slices and a soda, or one slice, a salad and a soda - definitely a good deal. One of my favorite lunch time spots, however it does cause major post-lunch food coma, so choose it wisely. read more

Selection is pretty basic, but comprehensive. Less meatless than I would like, but the veggie was decent. The crust was chewy and pretty good, and it's fairly cost effective as their lunch deal of two slices/slice and side salad isn't expensive at all. Plus, you get a soda if you like soda (not a fan myself, but it is a good deal.) Mammoth pizza at a good price. Chances are you may not finish it all if you get two slices. The crust is good but can be a little like eating dough. A free soda is a nice touch. A swell variety of toppings options keeps it fun. This place has some charm and warmth, although it's a bit dingy. It appears to have lots of regular customers. I liked it, but to me it's just pizza, as I have only a cloudy memory of what true NY pizza is. When I think of NY pizza I picture the crust slightly thinner than it is here and with a smaller curb on the end. It's all relative. According to their website the place was founded by the Gambino family in the 70s from an old-world recipe, so I will not argue with them. This location is kind of tucked out of the way in the skyways. There are also at least two other locations. I think this place would thrive more if it were on street level near Hennepin or 1st Avenues. read more

Growing up in western NY state, I became aware at a very young age of the difference between proper NY/Sicilian-style pie and the variety offered by the various national chains that need not be named. After many years in Minnesota, I developed a great longing for the slices of my youth. I'd found a few decent slices, but nothing quite nailed it. There was always something off - the sauce was too thick, the crust too stiff. After much digging around the internets, I found a number of places in downtown Minneapolis claiming to offer NY-style pie. This is the one that truly delivers on that. Are there things I'd rather were different? Sure. I'd rather the Buffalo chicken tasted more buffalicious. As it stands, though, it's a great platform for spicing up with tabasco or crushed red pepper. It'd also be nice if I could get a slice some time other than weekdays mid-day, but far better that Andrea only be open when there's sufficient business and provide great, fresh-baked slices. Calzones would be rad as well; haven't had a proper one of those since moving here, but that wouldn't mesh well with the rest of the operation - too slow and space-intensive. Pies can be stacked. Calzones, not so much. Above all, Andrea gets it right where it counts most. The slices are monstrous and require some degree of wrangling. Sauce is just enough to add a touch of tomato and properly tie things together. Cheese is enough to fully cover the slice but not unmanageable. Oh yeah, and the jalapeno bacon cheeseburger pie they've started offering rocks. read more

I love this place... the pizza is phenomenal. I've never had a bad experience at Andrea's and I've been there dozens of times. A couple things I'd like to address: Yes, the line can be long at noon, but it moves very quickly. Yes, the owner is an eccentric guy, but that's what makes him lovable and gives this place some extra character. Yes, the seating is a little tight, but that allows you to convene with and break bread with your fellow man (ok, I don't really like convening with and breaking bread with my fellow man, but when I'm in the midst of a pizza-gasm at Andrea's, I don't really notice anyone else). Yes, Andrea's still uses styrofoam cups. I'm pretty sure these are biodgradable though, because I discarded mine on the floor in the skyway and by the time I walked by the next day, they were already gone. Yes, the portions are significant and the prices are reasonable. This is aexactly the kind of local business we should be supporting. read more

Love this little place with my whole NY-style-pizza-loving heart! The first time I ate here, it reminded me of the regular pizza place I go to when I'm in NYC. The service is eccentric, quick, and accommodating to large groups. But when you're there and it isn't busy, they are friendly, talkative, and oh so sweet. HUGE bonus: student discount. Going to the Art Institute for another degree, there isn't an on-site cafeteria for us, but these guys give us college kids a break with enough food to fill our bellies without breaking our sad little budgets. read more

I just had some of the best pizza I've had in quite some time! That barbecue was incredible! The singular reason I can't give it a 5-star rating is that I live in downtown Minneapolis as well as work. Andrea's is only open 10:00 am - 3:30 pm on weekdays. Why won't they take my money in the evening and on weekends? I think I'd comfortably never order from the big chains again if I knew I could get delivery from Andrea Pizza before the game on any given Sunday. Andreas pizza is an undiscovered gem in The Minneapolis fir pizza - Andrea makes delicious pizza - I would say closer to New York style pizza . Great sauce is primary to any good pizza and Andreas' got it ! I have tried all the flavors and while I love the pepperoni and cheese I would heartily recommend his amazing Chicken Alfredo The Alfredo sauce us made by Andrea with butter so this is a rich tasting piece if pizza . In that same vein, the owner/manager at Andrea was such a rude little troll that I have to one star this guy. The pizza was ok but not great, pretty much Sbarro with more variety. Whatever, what do you expect for this dark little section in the skyway? I asked if I could substitute a bottle of water for the fountain pop, and he proceeded to berate me for a solid three minutes about making his rent. This is hands-down my favorite place to eat for lunch in Downtown Mpls. I spent many late nights testing out the various pizza spots in NYC, and this is, in my opinion, the closest thing in the Twin Cities to a true NY slice. The soft, slightly buttery, thin crust and the wide selection of toppings/flavors (gyro, barbecue chicken, buffalo chicken, Hawaiian!) are some of the highlights. Plus, the owners Andrea ("Andre"?) and wife are there every day - Andre serving behind the counter, the Mrs. behind the register - coolest couple you'll find downtown. This another one of my common lunch locations when I worked nearby. For a crazy low price, you can get a couple lovely slices of New York style pie and a drink. They have everything from typical pepperoni to BBQ Chicken and other more atypical pizza topping combinations. Yum, yum, yummy yum! I have not been this happy about a slice of pizza since I lived in NYC. Huge slices. Chewy crust. Basic toppings, if you are in that mood. They also have some fun choices like bbq chicken and a chicken/bacon/ranch slice that I don't even want to think about the calorie content on! If you go during lunch, you can get two slices and a soda or a slice, soda and ceasar salad combo. I went with the salad (because I totally got the chicken bacon ranch slice!). At first, it looked like a little box of romaine, but then Mr Andrea showed me the way to the croutons and grate parmesan. Yea! Such a ladies' man.
