Andy's Café for the past eight years has been one of my favorite places to eat and my husband and I have always enjoyed going there. The food has always been delicious and our favorite waiter Jose always delivered excellent service. This past Sunday, however, was the last time we will ever go to Andy's Café. Why? New Ownership. This past Sunday we took our longtime friend with us to enjoy breakfast. We sat in Jose's section. He was attentive and took our order as usual, however a waiter is at the mercy of the kitchen. In the past it never took more than 10 minutes for our food to arrive. This time it was 15+ minutes leaving the waiter, Jose, to apologize for the disorganization of the kitchen, something which he definitely is not accustomed to. The order arrived incorrect (not Jose's fault) and there was further delay to boot. The only positive thing about the experience was Jose was still employed there and did the best he could under the circumstances. The part-owner, donning unprofessional attire, a Metallica black t-shirt and a backward hat, was very rude in how he was addressing customers, seemed bothered by routine requests and the fact that he had to go out of his way. Many of the patrons were just in disbelief at the new "tone" of the restaurant and its owner. Our table struck up conversation with other patrons who expressed disbelief at the way things were being run. Everyone agreed this would be the last visit. The food quality was poor, the food arrived late and was not how we ordered it. More importantly was the "just deal with it" side of rudeness that was served up with our food. After we paid our bill, I asked the Metallica t-shirt dressed man if he was the owner and he replied I'm the partial owner. I expressed that my husband and I had been coming here for years and told him about how our food took over 25 minutes, that the order was incorrect and that it was not good. His reply? "Oh, well, sometimes you have to wait." I then said honestly if you're part-owner, do you think wearing a Metallica T-shirt and backward hat is appropriate attire? He told me my opinion doesn't matter and to get out of his restaurant. I can't even begin to express our disappointment in Andy's Café. The only positive thing was Jose, who did the best he could with limited support. We will not be visiting again. Think twice if you like good service, great tasting food and more importantly common courtesy. What you will be assured of is bad food, long wait times with a side of rudeness. Been here before and it was always ok, so stopped in cause it was on my way. I go to a lot of breakfast joints all over the area and have made special trips to places that others recommend. This, today, was by far the Worst service ever. Place had maybe 10-12 patrons, most were eating and some had plates on tables for pickup. Told to seat myself anywhere, no problem, waiting 15 minutes for a water or menu and not getting any attention, that's a problem. I get up to leave and say to the guy @ the register that no one came by me all this time and he says sorry have a nice day. That's rich. Did not care one bit. Went to Gail's down the street and it was great. I'll never waste my time there again and you shouldn't either. read more

Such good food! The skillets are well made and not salty, which was a huge plus. My husband got their country fried steak, which was heavenly- I normally am not a fan of country fried steak but Andy's does it really well. Real sausage gravy as well! Will be back! read more

This was a good breakfast! The staff was friendly and attentive. The breakfast was filling and very reasonably priced! I got the meat lovers skillet and my daughter got the egg breakfast for kids. The food came out quickly. For a kids menu offering it was generous! Two eggs, two sausage links, hash browns and two pancakes. My daughter also thought their chocolate milk was the best she ever had. The meat skillet had sausage, ham, bacon, cheese and three eggs. Very filling. They also had Cholula hot sauce! If you want ridiculously tasty breakfast, big portions, extremely good service, and appropriate prices, and you are in Des Plaines, come to Andy's. This place is two blocks from my house. I have been an on and off frequenter of Andy's for years now, and used to go every weekend with my daughter. The only reason I stopped is cause its cheaper to cook at home, but only by a bit. Other local Des Plaines restaurants might be more well known (choo choo, sugarbowl) but none meet the quality of service, price, and quality of food that you can find at Andy's. read more

This place never disappoints! Had the California eggs Benedict a week ago-perfection! Today had pot pie soup with the cutest "puff pastry croutons" -indescribable-it was that good. When I worked nearby I'd eat here at least once a week but then started back recently and now know it's soup will keep us warm during next year's winter-cancelling dinner reservations tonight and staying in with the pot pie soup!!!! read more

Amazing. The reviews were correct. I found this place writing my review for Sunrise grill. My boyfriend says an avocado chicken sandwich sounds good and I said I have just the place. It is a special and happened to be that day. My pancakes were great and the portions are ridiculous. Not quite as fancy as sunrise, plain creamers, no orange slice on the juice glass but that's ok with me. The service was great. Definitely be back. read more

450 miles from home and we used Yelp to find breakfast. It was the bomb doggy. Everything was fast, everyone helped us out, filling coffee, waters, clearing tables, etc. Food and our plates were hot to the last bite. A lot of other places could learn from their model here. I found Andy's by accident while looking for another restaurant and was so happy I found it! I drive almost an hour round trip to come here and the soups, service and food are worth it. Finally a breakfast place in Des Plaines that gets it. I have been very critical in most of my reviews of places serving breakfast in Des Plaines but finally Andy's Cafe has what it takes to keep me returning. Coffee is really good, service is fantastic, food is great. With the only exception, in my personal opinion, is of their omelets ... I HATE FORMED OMELETS !!! Loss of a star for that one. Continuing ... Their steak & eggs are great - huge portions - and very reasonably priced for either the skirt or chopped. Their side pancakes are also large, larger than some places regular order, and they don't crumble. The skillets have yet to disappoint me. And, as some others have mentioned, their soups are delicious. The place has a real nice feel to it. The parking lot cannot accommodate this place during the peak hours. Maybe the next time I'm there I'll ask if they can fold an omelet, if so, then maybe I'll change this review to a 5 star. read more

Everthing was delicious,! Fresh squeezed orange juiice, french toast and hash browns. Generous portions. Cooked to perfection! The waiter, Jose, was an excellent server and restaurant ambassador. Can't wait to visit the area again and return for their daily soup specials. Bravo! read more

Hmmm.... where to begin.... we have been coming here for a while now. It seems like they are starting to move in the wrong direction. There is still time before the move turns into a slip. Not sure what's going on in the back/kitchen but we were disappointed this morning. Brief background... we've been going to Bakers Square on Dempster for over 20yrs. They too, in the last 2 years or so started moving in the wrong direction. Then it went from moving to (skip slip) full blown sliding. With them it was the quality of food and food prep, not so much the cleanliness. Well.... they are gone..... I knew that was going to happen. They filed chapter 11, yes, economic problems..... who is going to pay the bills when the patrons stop coming. read more

I really used to love this place. For the last 15 years me and my family ate here every weekend . But now it has all gone downhill sense ownership has changed . Today i thought i should give them another chance i placed my order for pick up. Get home waffle came plain no big deal i called drove back and they got it right. My first mistake was not checking the rest of my order wich was completely wrong . At this point i was just going to deal with it and eat it . Annoyed i called them back not to ask for a refund or to remake my order because at this point i knew they where not capable of doing a simple task , just let them know it was completely wrong and missing some items so they are aware they are making mistakes. I call and the young kid that has no business answering a phone answers as i tell him who i was cuts me off and goes NOW WHAT?! With attitude well Mr. NOW WHAT thank you for proving that Andy's really does not care about there customer. Staff should go to gails carriage inn in des plaines so they can see how to treat a customer and observe how a correct order is taken . Will NEVER spend another dollar here. read more

The staff were receptive but some of them were under training and were trying to figure to assemble the ordered dishes. Their carrot juice was phenomenal. The veggie omlet was fully filled with vegetables and was like an enormous burrito and the hashbrowns ws excellent. Fluffy pancakes are a plus as well. read more

This is a terrible place to start your new year morning. We didnt even get a chance to order anything. When we first walk in, we were not sure if we should sit ourselves down or a host will as there was no one to greet us or say they will be with us shortly. So we sat ourselves down. Good thing was we were served coffee right away. Then, we waited and waited for more than 10 mins and still no one walk to our table to Indroduce themselves as our server. We pay for our coffee and left. There were servers around standing but no server took the liberty to ask us if we were ready to order. Never will go to this place again neither recommending this place. I would give them negative star if I could. read more

We found this cozy spot about 6 months ago, they have some of the best soups in town and are reasonably priced. Jose and Lisa are great servers and the hosts are always very welcoming. They're only open for breakfast and lunch. read more

My family and I enjoyed coming here a few times. The last time we came we were rushed through the meal and treated like garbage. We were already seated and placing orders before we knew they would be closing in thirty minutes. Even though we made fast decisions and placed orders quickly, the male waiter repeatedly reminded us we had to be fast. He was extremely irritated that we were there, which I thought was odd because other people were eating too. Two middle aged guys came after us and I noticed they did not receive the same treatment. I guess he felt I would take his crap attitude because I was with my kids. Anything we asked for was ignored. No refills on coffee or water. He showed minimal attention to the point where we needed to ask the two female wait staff for simple things like butter, creamer, and syrup. I couldn't enjoy the food because our waiter continued to show physical hostility with quick jerky movements while cleaning around our table, and again verbally reminding us they were closing shortly. The meal for 2 adults and 2 kids was $46, no small price for eggs and pancakes, obviously I'm paying the price for the experience and not the food. I went to go to pay and gave one dollar tip. That's right 1.00 because I thought if I left zero it could be misinterpreted as me forgetting the tip. The smallest tip I have ever given. The cashier who looked like a dirtbag punk who showers monthly if ever, decided to say something about the small tip after I walked away and was out of sight around the corner, to which I responded that's right, one dollar was what I left and that's what I thought about the service. Outside he has a bum-looking patron return the dollar to me, he didn't do it himself. I told the smelly looking slimeball cashier that he ought to hire a better waiter if he wanted return customers. He didn't say anything at that point of course. But after I walked across the street he made sure to yell obscenities at my wife and so that my kids could hear. True weasel fashion just like a total punk with no brain and zero job prospects would do. I decided to control myself and leave, there's not much to gain by fighting a lowlife over pancakes and I'm not interested in missing work for jail time. Instead I put this long review to yelp to fight the business. Basically I want my $46 dollars back and compensation for my very important and limited family time lost. And compensation for the indignity of eating while anxious and having a scuzz sucker yell profanities at me from far away and out of my sight. The female waitresses were very friendly, I feel bad for them, they work with bozo's. Hope the owner gets a good taste of this review. Okay. So me and my girlfriend came here based on reading the reviews. Everyone saying how bomb the skillets are, truth is we got here ordered the country skillet, turned out to be watery and no taste. I was getting frustrated and my waiter saw that. Came over to ask if I was doing alright I was honest and said no. This was the first waiter that did not give me one hint of attitude. Was graciously enough to say that he waits in a daily basis for people like me. He truly cared about his job. He told me to pick something else off the menu. Not just for me but for my girl too.
