I visit this place once a Saturday morning per month. I like the diner atmosphere, which is surprisingly rare to find in Pasadena, and it comes with a Mexican twist. The food portions are on the large side, and I'd give it a 6 on the scale from 1 to GREASEBALL (=10). I definitely come here when I need the energy from a power breakfast -- unlimited coffee and a solid breakfast burrito. The food is good and will keep me happy and sated for half the day. It is by no means a masterpiece, and the prices could be lower, but it is what it is and it's just that guilty craving that needs to be satisfied from time to time. I recommend the breakfast burrito, the huevos rancheros, and the huitlacoches (mushroom quesadillas). My favorite plate, the breakfast burrito is loaded with real cooked eggs and your choice of breakfast meat. When the hell does Pasadena wake up? I have been spending some time in Pasadena lately and it is a lovely town but it is hard to find anything that opens before 9am except for fast food places. I was starving and came across Andy's. It is a very old school style coffee shop with a horseshoe shaped counter and booths along the wall. They were having a special for eggs and chorizo so I ordered that and it came with a choice of flour or corn tortillas. I asked for one less egg then they normally use so the there was a better meat to egg ratio (I always do that everywhere...I don't need all the food anyways). It was good. A neighborhood treasure. Short-order food is an art and this place is a classic. A diner that has been a location for tv and movies. My favorite lunch is the grilled chicken with fruit. I've sent others here to try this moist and flavorful sandwich and they agreed...better than some table cloth restaurants. This is a great place for talking and meeting some nice friendly people. The pandemic is being beaten back by this longtime neighborhood coffee shop (c. 1960) that clearly knows what its doing. I found this gem while my car was getting detailed on down the street. My breakfast was perfect and I don't say that lightly because I am a bit of a pain in the ass about my eggs. The San Francisco omelette was packed with bacon and cream cheese and yet light and fluffy. The mountain of hash browns were at once crispy and tender. The bread perfectly toasted with a light swipe of melted butter and the fruit bowl was clearly fresh featuring melons, berries and pineapple. Service was terrific and friendly. While the atmosphere is clearly old school coffee shop, (old timey booths, swivel chairs at the counter and pictures of visiting Hollywood on the walls), its clear they have great measures in place. Condiments are served in individual sized portions. Clear dividers on the booths, hand sanitizer stations, and clear mask signage on all the tables. Customers are seated at every other table to ensure social distancing plus the staff wears masks and WEARS THEM CORRECTLY (no noses peaking out thank god). But if the delicious food and strong covid measures aren't enough to capture your attention, Andy's Coffee Shop's story should. After all, it is the story of so many these days. A single mom with 3 kids, one heading to college, fighting to keep a business alive and her employees on their feet. Even when the initial shut down and lay-offs came, she told her staff she would bring them back asap but in the meantime, they could keep eating there for free. The majority of her business came from her loyal customers ordering take-out plus she added dinners to the menu. When permitted, she created an outdoor dining section in the back parking lot. Eventually she was able to bring back the staff that hadn't moved on and now six people are working hard to keep Andy's going as they are not quite out of the woods yet. As you can tell, I'm a fan and its only my first time here. And I haven't even mentioned the many movies, music videos and tv shows shot here... but I'll leave that to you to discover. read more

He asked me to move. He was very mean and impolite. I left the restaurant and went to another one where the people were very polite. I don't know anything about their food. This is a great little 50s diner that I came to all the time when I lived just down the street 30 years ago. But you move and you just get out of the habit. I've only been here a hand full of time since Today I was in search for place to eat breakfast with my 11-year-old daughter who's school is just down the street and Andy's popped into my mind.... I was so glad I did, because I was very impressed with the Huevos mexicanos and salsa verde (the best I've had) and great green sauce!!! My daughter had a short stack of fluffy pancakes. The food was great and the coffee was good and so was the service! What more can you ask of a breakfast place? I will be back to try more things on the menu soon! read more

I just saw a negative review. The experience for those people must have been a very rare occurrence. My husband and I have been going to Andy's for years now and I've never seen anything there but smooth service with the whole operation running like a well oiled machine. We always get items from the Mexican Food page. It's incredibly delicious! I get cravings for it--not just A Mexican breakfast, but an ANDY's Mexican breakfast. The woman who is normally managing the front has not been there for a couple months, I think. She may have gotta sick or had something happen. I don't know. In 14 years we had never been there when she wasn't there. The rest of the crew has stepped up and given us our continued good service and excellent food. Recently there has been a young woman who is new. I've seen her a few times. She seems to have server experience elsewhere and is getting the hang of Andy's. So, basically, it would be my guess that the experience causing the bad review of about 10 days ago is likely that there was a large group to serve during a very busy time. Andy's customers seem to come in groups of 2 to 4 or sit at the bar if they are alone. I think the bad review folks had an expectation of a large group going out on Sunday morning to a major restaurant. Andy's is a one-of-a-kind place that runs on a tight budget. It's a place to linger over your coffee and food. I REALLY HOPE they hang on past Covid and into the down turn of the economy coming up. I consider Andy's a major find and I don't want it to go away or get jam packed with a lot of new customers. I love a quirky place without throngs of people with high expectations. If you have a large group you should just go to one of the many fine restaurants around Pasadena. Having to wait an hour and a half is just a freak experience for anyone. Most people would have left after 20 to 40 minutes. Why would you keep waiting? If the new woman server was working it was probably the very first time she ran up against the hardest thing to do there. So basically, people, consider the bad experience the other folks had was probably a combination of things--maybe a large group at a little diner, the busiest time of the week, a new employee, dealing with COVID, and the main manager gone. That's not going to happen often. I encourage anyone that wants to be served an EXCELLENT Mexican breakfast in a place with booths where you can linger a bit and enjoy the company you are with to go to Andy's and give them some business. First time at Andy's Coffee Shop and it is your typical hole in the wall, family owned diner. But with a typical diner comes some pretty good food. I ordered the Machaca ($10.75 + water = $13.90), was pretty good. Their menu had a variety in American food & Mexican, and breakfast to lunch. I'd definitely come again and try more of the Mexican Breakfast Dishes!! I think they charge extra for using Debit or Credit Card which may be why the bill came out to be $13.90. This place is so good and surprisingly not that busy. They do a solid American breakfast but they do an outstanding Mexican breakfast! The picture is of the huevos a la mexicana and was the best breakfast I've had at a restaurant in a long time. They also have Huitlacoche (corn smut) quesadillas, which are amazing. Seen this place for years but never stopped. Decided to give the place a try. Place has that typical old coffee shop feel. Had the steak and eggs while the wife had a cheeseburger. Service was good even tho there was one server at the time and we were one of four parties who walked in at the same time. Overall the food was good and served hot with one exception. The steak I ordered was tough and had a weird flavor to it. It was almost like a combination of a spice and the steak being old. It was tough to the point that i couldn't and didn't want to finish it. The other food was excellent and prepared to order. This is my local mom and pop cafe when i need a home cooked full breakfast, which is definitely a blast from the past as well documented on here. I've yet to have anything I have not liked and the wait staff and cooks make everything to order, even accommodating the pickiest of eaters by taking anything you don't want out or adding what you might want in (within reason now, people). They are also pretty vegetarian friendly, and if you'd rather have sorizo in your breakfast burrito, go for it. Egg whites for your omelette? Not a problem. I don't know how or why but their coffee always tastes very good, which is usually not expected of a small breakfast joint. I've never had a problem getting a table and waiting has been minimal. Waiting at the booth does give you a chance to see the memorabilia from the episode of Mad Men that was filmed there, which was kind of cool. Steve-o of Jackass fame is also a fan of Andy's, and his favorite order is indicated in the menu.
