I had a very upsetting experience at this place today. I came in with my small elderly dog, who was in a sling and not walking around the restaurant. Instead of treating me respectfully, staff immediately focused on questioning me and demanding "papers" for my service animal in a very aggressive and humiliating way. What made the situation worse was the tone and behavior. I repeatedly tried to explain calmly, but I was spoken to dismissively and made to feel unwelcome in front of other people. I ended up leaving extremely distressed. I know my rights under ADA laws, and businesses should know that employees are not allowed to demand documentation or certification for a service animal. There should be proper staff training on how to handle these situations professionally and respectfully. No customer should be treated this way. read more

Angel Azul has a great variety of bakery items. I have been here multiple times I would get their hot coffee with milk and a food item. I have tried their empanadas which are great. I always ask for hot sauce because I love adding a little bit of heat to my food. I like their bakery items as well they have pan de bono, pan con Jamon y queso, and arepas de choclo. And obviously so much more!! The service is usually quick service. They do get busy in the mornings when people are picking up breakfast on their way to work. They are also busy on the weekends in the mornings. They have seating and some people do sit down and enjoy their coffee inside but I would say most people take their coffee and breakfast to-go. It is conveniently located in a Spanish neighborhood. 10/10 recommendation read more

It was obvious the items were baked the day before--the arepa was dry and grainy, and none of the others were any better. If the pastries aren't fresh, they should tell you to wait until they are. Big fan of this bakery. It's run by a family who has owned this place for over 20 years if I remember my history. Everything here tastes freshly home baked and cooked. Most of the cookies are delicious and my favorites are the pandebono's (Columbia cheesy bread) and especially the apple turnovers. Hands down the best place to get both of these items. They also have delicious Spanish coffee which always hits the spot with any of the pastries. The prices are also very cheap which is a win win with the quality. I bought 3 small cookies, an apple turnover and a small Spanish coffee all for $3. This gives you an idea of how affordable they are. I highly recommend this place and you just try. In search of Colombian raspado (IMO, very different from Mexican raspado), I arrived here. Raspados are shaved or crushed ice dessert drinks with fruit syrups or purees and also drizzled with condensed milk. Here, they had both passion fruit and black berry syrups. I opted for both and didn't regret it. And to think, they were only ~$3.50! I ordered two, one for me and one for the bf, which ended up to be too much for the both of us. One is enough to share if you're into that kind of thing. :P And yes, this place sold cholados, something akin to a raspado, ecxept I believe it is usually topped with fresh fruit. I also grabbed some pandebono. YES. By no means am I an expert on Colombian food, but I've had really good pandebono in the past. The ones here were soft and the cheese perfectly mixed and baked into the bread. I ended up ordering too much so I saved one for the next day and what a good decision that was. (sidenote: I live a driveable distance from JC heights, so saving this last morsel was indeed a good choice) I heated up my last pandebono for 20 seconds in the microwave and it was basically fresh again. I wish I lived closer so I can come here in the early hours of the morning to grab a cafe con leche. This place doesn't disappoint. Oh yes! One last thing. There was a little bit of a language barrier here (must be my North Jersey accent trying to pronounce 'raspado.' Guilty.) But that said, the ladies are nice and try really hard to accommodate you. This is a great little bakery! They have a nice selection of Spanish sweet breads and super strong coffee to get your day going. My dad used to love coming by here for their coffee! My favorite is a bun called pan de bono (a cheese bread), which I reheat by throwing in my toaster oven for a minute or two. My dad used to love buying their bags of day old buns, usually in clear bags right by the register. They're reduced price and still delicious. They serve slices of cake and other desserts (flan, etc), fruit smoothies, and fresh juices. During the summer, they serve granizados (shaved fruit flavored ice drinks). The place is super casual and has a few tables to eat at. Although, I always take my bread to go. Most of the employees have limited English but Google is my sidekick and ordering is simply pointing and sticking up my fingers to let them know how many I want. The prices are very reasonable and if I eat anything I don't like, it's simply part of the experience. The employees are nice and willing to give recommendations to help prevent that. But if anything, you win some, you lose some! (Except with pan de bono. You never lose with pan de bono!) read more

I tried the coffee once and felt like I was eating coffee rather than drinking it-- it was way too thick although I'm not sure why (maybe they use cream instead of milk). They have quick service so you shouldn't be waiting too long on those mornings you see the line by the door. I order a variety of foods & they NEVER disappoint! They are super inexpensive and my main issue is that I can never choose just 1 or 2 things and end up ordering a couple. Most items in the bakery are $1-2 and then they also have breakfast dishes (eggs, bacon, etc) for about $5-7. I'm not a fan of coffee in general but I hear a lot of people ordering cafe con leche so I can only imagine it must be good for those that enjoy coffee. The staff is really friendly for the most part. Make sure you have quarters Mon-Sat because it is metered parking. As part of our Latin American tour of the Heights, Bald One, Baby D, and I rolled into Angel Azul Bakery Cafe. Unassuming on the inside as it is on the outside, the smell of sweet pastries and cafe con leche was irresistible! All types of Colombian and Ecuadorian confections are available here, from creme- and custard-filled goodies to delights stuffed with cheese and guava. Even hot dog and chorizo-stuffed wonders beamed at us from behind the counter. As he's the sweet tooth in the family, Bald One chose a few baked breads for breakfasts (to take home), one cruller-type item filled with a sweet custard, and of course, a cafe con leche. We enjoyed the coffee and pastry in the cafe, with futbol playing on the tele and a steady stream of Spanish-speaking customers keeping things lively, with Baby D sleeping all the while in her stroller alongside the table. Several friendly ladies stopped by and spoke to me in Spanish. Unfortunately, despite my black hair, lightly tanned skin, and ambiguous looks, I was not able to respond in kind. I gestured wildly and smiled, using monosyllabic cognates. From what I gathered, I think they thought the baby was cute and looked just like "Papa." The pastry was delicious and the coffee was milky sweet yet packed a caffeinated punch. The ambiance? I felt we could have been in Colombia. What the cafe lacked in decor, it more than made up for with the quality of its goods and the sunny service with a smile. The staff is very nice and helpful in explaining the different choices of their cultural wonders that are offered here. One word: PANDEBONO. That bread alone makes the visit worth it. It's not always out with the rest of the breads and pastries, but that's a good thing. Cheesy, warm, pillowy, and inexpensive... it's a carby dream. The other breads are good as well. I've tried the pan de queso, bolos, and pan con jamón y queso. Arepas are tasty. I've yet to try the sweet pastries, but I admittedly don't have much of a sweet tooth. The bakery also offers breakfast. There are always empanadas, chicharrones, and other Colombian specialties behind the counter. Every time I've been to the bakery, I've seen at least two people enjoying a plate of something porky and assumedly delicious. They accept credit cards, but I think it is a $10 minimum. Spanish is everyone's preferred language, of course, but there is no barrier for those of you who don't speak it. So go, ask them to fill your bags with pandebono and other amazing breads, and see how much of it actually makes it back to your house... if you're like me, none of it will. read more

It's crazy fast paced every time I go there, you gotta be on your toes, and know what you want because the ladies are moving quickly! the experience however, is always pleasant.
