I also love their cheesecakes, they usually have amaretto, spumoni, and a seasonal flavor. Everything here is so good, you can't go wrong. I had such a fun experience going to and ordering from Angelo Brocato. I know when I go to these long standing shops I always have to try the basics, because if you cannot get the basics then ... unfortunately all the basics failed :( the Spumoni was the best thing, but you can never go wrong with Spumoni. The cream puff was my least favorite... the entire pastry was not enjoyable. And the "wedding cookies" which has another name were also a never again. The cream horn was okay. I'd still go back to try some more ice creams and maybe ask what they'd recommend before ordering other pastries. read more

So this is one of those places that is so quintessentially New Orleans that it pops up on searches all the time. It typically comes up when searching for the best cannolis, but I am not a cannoli fan, so it was on my list of places to go, but when I had family in town who I knew would enjoy it. Fast forward to a night when I was craving ice cream. And it was at the hour when most places were either just closing or the lines were halfway down the block. And then? We drove past here and the line was short. Yes, yes, I know. Gelato and ice cream are not the same thing, but I do really enjoy gelato too (thanks, SF). So we found parking around the corner and jumped into line. When I walked inside, I knew my Italian auntie would be in heaven. The cookies, the panettone, and of course all of the gelato flavors and the cannolis. Also? The apple turnover I picked up. There's tons of other sweets too, like Bacis. This weekend after a lovely brunch my Yelp pal Shannon S. took me in a walk to another neighborhood family business that has over 120 years of New Orleans goodness. This place is a wonderful Sicilian bakery that was originally established in 1905 in the French Quarter by Angelo Brocato, Sr. The local Italian residents Quarter would come early every morning with their warm bread to dip in Angelo's freshly-made granita al limone for breakfast. (lemon ice) They still make their famous lemon ice today and have been in their current, N Carrollton Ave location, since the 80's. I've heard that they have an outlet at the airport too. So when you walk in you immediately get the sense of stroking back in time, it's set up like an old apothecary from years gone by. The smells, well you gotta be there, oh my. They are well known for everything they make, it's authentic and just done right. Their gelato, ice creams, cakes, cappuccino and if course lemon ice are legendary and I am already looking forward to my next visit. I had a cannoli, almond biscotti and couple if cookies and can attest to the amazing flavors that they put into the authentic Sicilian delicious sweets. I'm a cannoli lover and I can honestly say that theirs is perfect, I'm talking cannoli heaven! Their expresso machine is iconic and Shannon tells a funny story about the annual machine cleaning when people are Jonsing for their expresso for a week or so LOL You can find their goodies all around the greater Nawlins area in local markets and grocery stores that carry their pre-packed ices and gelato, cannolis and biscotti! yum! We drove 8 hours from Texas to get this pastry. They make the best St Joseph's Day pastry! We sampled quite a few items while there and brought home several boxes for our friends to try. Stopped by to grab a mini cannoli and had to say that it was average at best. Typical of american cannolis, the shell was thick and hard. In fact, it was hard enough to scratch the top of my mouth, causing some bleeding. The cream, both vanilla and chocolate, was grainy and tasted mainly of sugar. It was nice that they added pistachios and powdered sugar to the cannoli, but they didn't add to the taste of the cannoli. On the other hand, I sampled some gelatos and they were quite creamy; maybe the gelatos might be better than the cannoli. Service was good though. The staff let you add both the chocolate and vanilla cream to the cannoli. read more

Angelo Brocato is a New Orleans gem. Started by a young immigrant who learned to make gelato in his native Palermo, Angelo Brocato created a family-owned business that has been operating since 1905. The company was originally located on Decatur Street, in the part of the Vieux Carre then known as Little Palermo . It later moved to bigger quarters in the 500 block of Ursulines and then to 615-17 Ursulines, where the original floor tiles with the company's name on it are still located at the current shop there. In 1981, after the French Quarter the French Quarter had lost much of its Italian population, the company moved to its present location near City Park. The shop sells a wide variety of custard-based gelato. I went with one of Brocato's original offerings: Stracciatella, vanilla with shaved chocolate, and tiramisu. Both were flavorful and quite refreshing. Service was friendly and our server explained some of the shop's history. The company is now in its third generation. read more

Staff was very nice and the place is a nice stop from the hustle of life, but when you drive a long way to have the best gelato (as stated by some friend's) and its not then its sad. A small but bustling gelato and pastry shop lies towards the end of the streetcar line in mid-city. They have an imposing selection, and to take advantage of it, they let you choose four flavors for a large gelato, which nonetheless does not cost that much. Their pastry selection was certainly appealing as well. I went for a king cake gelato that was perhaps a nice experiment but which looked better than it tasted, a somewhat more satisfying praline flavor, a chocolate almond flavor with whole almonds in it, and the winner, a smooth peppermint. It came out a bit too close to melting for my liking for whatever reason, but if I ever went back again, with four flavors to choose from I like my odds of finding something good. read more

Bravo! This place caught my eye while taking the 48 up to NOMA. On the way back we jumped off the trolly, grabbed some gelato, and were back to the trolly stop in time for the next one. Prices of about any café (maybe a bit more), but better quality by far. The store is centered around Italian fare, pastries and gelato. I've been here many times and nothing I've had has ever disappointed me. My favorites are the baba ruhm, tiramisu, almond macaroon, and canolli. Even the espresso and capaccinos are really nice. The to go boxes get wrapped nicely with a string (the box just looks like they put care into it) and the aesthetics of the building and furniture is really nice too (some of it is really old). The service in on a rotating style, where one person helps you with tasting, ordering, and point of sell. I have yet to have any bad experience here 10/10. It just is a local favorite and one of those places that you should visit when you go to New Orleans. Go here and go out of your way to do so if you have to. read more

Very rarely do I give out a 5 star rating, but Angelo's is straight up deserving! After having a not so delicious dinner somewhere else, we figured we would head to Angelo's for some cannolis. As always, we were in heaven as soon as we walked in the doors. This is an Italian bakery and gelato hotspot in the city and it was packed, but the pastry cases were delightfully full of yummies. The cannolis are hand piped to order. The coffee is delicious and if you can get your hands on the gelato or anything else, DO! We tried the eclairs this go round as well as the baba rhum cake and baci gelato. I'm salivating just reminiscing! Ordered cannolis to go and they took the time to wrap them in this precious box with a little yarn bow. That extra mile goes a long way in my book! So, I'm back with another review because of my cousin Vinny. I love the guy, but bless his heart the man can talk. Apparently Vinny forgot to tell me about Brocato's... so he felt the need to call me in the middle of my dinner at Venezia's to have a 30 minute conversation about how great Angelo Brocato's is. For those of you who don't know Brocato's IS Gelato, not that fake stuff you buy in the frozen foods aisle at your favorite grocery store..... and it's right down the street from Venezia's. So if you're not absolutely disgusted with yourself from stuffing your face at dinner, Brocato's is the place to go. Personally after finishing dinner I felt like I was with child, and I took it upon myself to name my food baby Toni...in honor of my great grandfather's brother's first cousin from Sicily. Needless to say, I was convinced to go get some Gelato at Brocato's after dinner because well... I wasn't really convinced...I like food...what about it? So, I waddled myself across the street in the hopes to burn off a few calories and entered Angelo Brocato's fine establishment. I walked up to the counter and looked at the variety of gelato I had to pick from and obviously...one caught my eye. The King Cake Gelato.... I had to get it...it was as if Mother Mary herself was calling me in the form of 4 scoops of dessert. After receiving this beautiful specimen of gelato I sat down in some chairs probably used from the grand opening and dug in. It was delicious, little bits of King Cake in Gelato...Angelo... you're a mad man, but you're a genius. To wrap up this review, if you're looking for great authentic gelato or just good dessert to soothe your soul on a cloudy day...Angelo Brocato's is the place. Having grown up in Germany, I don't much care for most American pastries because they usually taste sweet and nothing else. Not at Angelo Brocato, the pastries here reminded me of bakeries in Europe, they are the real thing. Full of delicate flavors. My absolute favorite were the Sicilian cakes which have marzipan. But you can't go wrong with any of the selections. If I lived in New Orleans, I would eat here all the time. Staff was patient and friendly.
