Having grown up in Germany, I don't much care for most American pastries because they usually taste sweet and nothing else. Not at Angelo Brocato, the pastries here reminded me of bakeries in Europe, they are the real thing. Full of delicate flavors. My absolute favorite were the Sicilian cakes which have marzipan. But you can't go wrong with any of the selections. If I lived in New Orleans, I would eat here all the time. Staff was patient and friendly. We went for the gelato but walked out with a box of amazing pastries (and gelato)! The cannolis and cookies tasted like they came from my grandmother's kitchen and the gelato was delicious! The tiramisu and chocolate gelato flavors were our favorites but the Praline and strawberry were both close behind! We loved everything we bought and can't wait to return. This was on my list of places to try when I returned to visit NO. The evening we arrived there was a policeman outside the entrance keeping people from blocking the doorway and directing customers when to enter as the line indoors became shorter. We ordered a few different items so we could share. The two gelatos we tried were strawberry and banana pudding, both rich, creamy and delicious. I also enjoyed the pecan melt away cookies. The cannoli was a disappointment. I thought the filling had a paste texture and the flavor wasn't great. But many people seem to love them according to reviews. The nucatoli cookie wasn't my fav either. The young long haired, tattooed blonde lady filling the made to order cannolis didn't wear plastic food gloves, no hair net and was wearing a fabric bracelet (germ magnet), all while working over two huge bowls of cannoli filling. It was definitely a health hazard and a turn off. I'm sure there are some tasty pastries but I wouldn't return to try any. If you go, try the gelato. read more

Brocato's is such a Mid-City gem! I've gone for many many years especially during high school when I went to school in the area. I went back this past weekend since it had been a long while since I had last been, but it's just as it always was, perfect! The service was great and could remember every one of the 15 assorted desserts I had chosen when checking me out at the register which I found pretty impressive because I could barely even remember what I had ordered. I ordered a dozen of their mini cannolis and they were just the perfect size and were piped fresh right in front of me. This is my absolute favorite Italian bakery. Not to mention the Gelato is the . I highly recommend the stracciatella gelato is flipping awesome and shouldn't be passed up. They recently had Mardi Gras cheesecake which was really good. I would live off the bananas foster and the almond cheesecake if I could. The cannoli are really good as are the cream puffs. Best cannoli I've had outside of NYC, with the classic being a mix of half chocolate and half vanilla filling and pistachios on both ends. The variety is really nice and the shell is shatteringly crisp. The tiramisu cake is also lovely. read more

This place is cute! Tables and chairs are uncomfortable, but we stayed a bit because we were meeting up with family. Coconut gelato is delicious. I've been coming here for years and am just getting around to a review! To start, their pastries are to die for. In the summertime they have pistachio eclairs that literally melt in your mouth. During the other seasons I always grab a regular cream puff or when they have the cream puffs with strawberries I get that (honestly that ones my favorite). The pastries are always so fresh, and the flavor is top notch. I recently tried their cooked cream gelato and OMG... it taste better with each spoon. It's the perfect consistency for gelato and not to sweet but instead just sweet enough. This was a small scoop but honestly it was more than enough! I'm writing this review solely based on their King Cake gelato but it was so good that it would be a sin not to give them five stars. I've tried a few different brands of King Cake ice creams and while they've all been decent, the King Cake gelato at Angelo Brocato was by far the best and most authentic. There were big pieces of actual king cake in the gelato and sweet cinnamon swirls and cream cheese throughout. Every bite was filled with flavor whether it was the king cake itself or the cinnamon cream cheese. It tasted exactly like king cake but in gelato form (aka incredible). I didn't try any of their other flavors, but given how much I loved the king cake gelato I'll happily return and try other flavors (unless they still have king cake, obviously). read more

This place is must visit if you're in the area. My family and I have been coming here since I was child and it's practically a tradition of ours to stop by for either a sweet treat or to be dessert after a dinner at Venezia! They have so many options and all so delicious! It's really cute date spot with a great atmosphere with decent service. Usually the service is really nice but this visit it was okay. Mask are required inside and depending on the time there will be a long line. My favorites are the classic spumoni, the delightful Napoleon, and also can't forget the Italian chocolate chip gelato! Best cannoli! The crunchy shell, the size, the vanilla AND chocolate options and of course those fabulous pistachios. I have gone to many places outside new orleans to try to find a cannoli in the same ball park as Angelo's and there just are none. We visited Boston and went to their little Italy. Their cannoli was small, soft...just not a Brocatto cannoli. The only cannoli that even comes close is at Impastatos. I love that this place keeps its 100 year old charm. From the little wire chairs and tables to the old original tiles on the floor. People young and old still visit. This place always has a line no matter the time of day. Their gelato is smooth and they even sell it at rouses. I have yet to try it there though. Angelo Brocattos is a must stop for locals and tourists alike. read more

We stopped by this place because we just had brunch nearby and heard this was one of the must visit institutions in New Orleans. I will take any opportunity to eat gelato! We came with a party of 9 people and they had plenty of room to sit and enjoy a cup of gelato or any of the other many pastries and desserts they have here. I tried the spumoni ice cream cause it looked colorful and delicious (and you get to try three flavors). We also had an Italian soda. Some of the others in our group tried the pastries like the cannoli. Everyone enjoyed the pastries! I really liked the spumoni ice cream. I would absolutely try it if you've never been here before. The green is pistachio almond (which was my favorite), the pink is tutti frutti and the yellow is lemon. The white is cream I think. It was pretty tasty and a delicious treat for a hot day. I think I would absolutely get this ice cream shipped to California (which it turns out they do)! read more

My favorite place for desert anywhere ever. Everything I've ever had here in my 50 years as a customer is delicious. I go every few weeks or my sweet tooth goes into withdrawal. Just the Cannoli Siciliano are worth a visit but those are just for starters; almond crescents, biscotti of all kinds, straciatelli and castagana gelatos, strawberry, lemon and blood orange ice... Despite living in the New Orleans area my entire life, I had never been to Brocato's. It seems every person I know has told me that I was crazy for never having tried it so I finally listened. I am here to tell you that this is one place that definitely lives up to the hype. I guess I always assumed this was only a gellato place. It is, but there is so much more. There was very impressive looking brass espresso machine that must have cost over $20,000. I should have had them pull me a few shots, but I wasn't here for coffee. What I was here for is the experience, and the desserts. As for the experience, it was packed. There were old people, families, young people on dates, and everyone in between. I guess my point is that the place is universally loved. Because so many people love it, finding a place to sit could be difficult. As for desserts, there were plenty to choose from. So many in fact, that I was kind of in shock when asked what to order. I picked what I was looking at when asked, and it turned out to be incredible. I have no clue what the official name was (cream horn?), but it had a very light flaky crust filled with cream. Normally I do not like these types of desserts, but this was so good that I want to rush there now and buy a dozen. I am now a convert and love Brocato's. If you have never been, go now. I know, don't quit my day job ;-) This Italian bakery located for over 100 years in New Orleans mid-city neighborhood does sweets & treats better than any other in the city! I've begun to try various items (almond macaroons, rum rasin gelato) but I have my favorite (mini canoli, half chocolate half vanilla + a cup of coffee) and sometimes having your favorite over and over is an okay thing. I love to go at night, order my sweet treat and sit under the glow of the turn of the century light fixtures from the quaint metal table located next to the windows. I love to listen to families and friends chat & laugh from the almost always filled to capacity seating area. If I update this review from birth until I or Yelp is done on this earth, I can't believe I'll ever rate them less than 5 stars. If for some reason I had to, it would probably break my heart. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. Yesterday, was St. Joseph's Day and when fellow yelper, Lindsay A and I were talking about dinner, we didn't know what we wanted but we knew we wanted dessert here. We wandered in (and there wasn't too much of a line!) and ordered mocha gelato and a blood orange ice plus we each got the special for San Giuseppe Sfinge, which was puff pastry with cannoli cream with a cherry and candied orange. So much goodness. We got to check out their altar (which is much smaller these days than I remember it in the 80s) and enjoy all the passersby. At Jazz Fest, Brocato's has a booth at Food 1 and sells spumoni and few other items so I always try to stop by. Back when I was a little girl and fest was MUCH less crowded, I was allowed to cross the fairgrounds by myself to buy myself a wedge (for $1) and then I would gobble it up as I walked back so I wouldn't have to share it with my brothers. In my family, the mango ice is one of the first real people foods that new babies are allowed to eat, ensuring that their taste buds are set for life. Angelo Brocato is worth the journey off your typical path if you're a tourist. I am so happy I "trekked" up here. My mum had recommended I come here based on an article she read, and I almost didn't make it, since it's a bit far away from the central tourist activities. I read Michele C's review though, and had a wee craving for stracchiatella, so on the Canal streetcar line, I went. Divine, divine, divine. I also helped myself to a coconut macaroon, which was fresh, scrumptious, and all together amazingly wonderful, too. I popped up on a Friday, mid-morning and there was no line (woo hoo), and was helped fairly swiftly. (The only thing that was a bit odd is there were four women working behind the counter, one asked me if I wanted to try something, gave me a sample, and then went around talking to her co-workers about cleaning the floor or something that I didn't think I needed to hear, and it took a while to actually order.) My friends and I came here for dessert because we were in the mood for gelato. There's actually a bunch of places in this one area so we just decided on this one on a whim. We got strawberry cheesecake, mint pistachio, and stracciatella. The parking was curbside/street only and not plentiful. The shop looks like an old school dessert shop with gelato, pastries, coffees, and Italian iced on the menu. There's different size cups and prices for the gelato and they let you try the different flavors.
