    Produce is all artfully displayed

My mom has shopped at this store for many, many years. On a recent trip up to Chicago, I wanted to check out this Caputo's that had been renovated last year. The outside has a new curvy design that expands from one end of the store to the other. The entrances are back behind it. They made some nice changes indoors too. There is a new seating area up front where you can sit and enjoy a snack that you just purchased. Perhaps a Gelato from the new gelato counter located right up front near the Produce dept.? Sadly I didn't get to try any but definitely will next visit. The Produce department is definitely the shining star here. Everything is arranged so beautifully! On a previous visit in 2012, I saw for the first time what fennel/anise looks like and took a picture! They're so beautiful! They moved the deli and bakery areas around and now there is a huge long counter that expands all along the back of the store. The Bakery, Deli, International Deli, Seafood and Butcher departments can all be found there. I still can't get used to the smell of fish in this store. I love to eat fresh fish but can't get past the fishy smell in this store so I doubt I will ever buy any here. Everything in the cases looks great however. They did a great job updating the store with lighting and new displays!

You can buy gallon jugs of Nutella for $52.99 here. Soooo... See you there? *Ideally, end review* In the name of being a "more helpful" review, I'll add a few more deets, though I do feel like the Nutella detail should be enough. The parking lot: Madness. It's so old and run down that there aren't even lines in some parts. The produce section: Madness. Shopping cart-astrophe. Great prices, but good luck getting through. Deli counter: Madness. I went in one day looking around for something specific. They didn't have it. I came back a week later and I swear to God I saw some of the people from the prior week were still there waiting... with cob webs connecting them to their pink, paper deli counter ticket with number. VERY similar to the Beetlejuice waiting room. The rest of the store: Madness. Okay, not really. But the rest of the store is just okay. A bit dated. Pretty dusty. Could definitely use some updating. BUT, they do have gallon jugs of Nutella for $52.99... So there's that.

When we invite people to come out to the western suburbs from the city, I swear, they first check their pantry and determine whether they need a trip to Caputo's before agreeing to make the trek out to the BFE. And I don't blame them. Caputo's has the BEST produce in Chicagoland. AND they give you huge quantities for cheap! I need to learn more recipes that use cilantro because every time I walk out of this store, I have a small bush of cilantro for less than a dollar. I get mad at myself if I purchase produce anywhere else, usually it's out of convenience on the way home from work. I'll end up going to Caputo's a couple days later and the tomatoes are more ripe, the limes are cheaper, and the lettuce still has dirt on it from being picked earlier that day. THEN there's the rest of the store. I have never seen isles dedicated to tomato sauces and pasta (guess it makes sense... Caputo's is Italian owned... ;) There's usually a crowd around the meat counter. Parking is never and issue and the staff is always a polite. Definitely glad we live near Caputo's to draw our city-lovin' friends out to the burbs!

You can probably find just about anything you need there. It kind of reminded me of Meijer but larger. The layout of the store is very confusing. Specialty items like gluten-free items can be mixed in with regular items, set off by themselves, or both. So, finding them wasn't that easy. From what we read of Woodman's before going, the did get good reviews on the amount and variety of gluten-free products. The same can be said for anything dairy-free. Their TV commercials talk about their great prices. I agree the items we saw on sale tended to be bargain, but the rest of the store seemed high. They are probably less expensive than Jewel, but more expensive than Valli Produce. We did get a lot while we were there and the total price was higher than we expected. So, overall, if you check their website for items on sale and you are near to a Woodman's, then by all means, the value is great. But if you don't live close to a Woodman's (like me), they aren't a great value but do have lots of specialty items.

They remind me of the staff you would encounter at a bulk buy retailer like...oh, I don't know...Walmart. Store is relatively clean. No reason I won't keep stopping in.

Usually they close by 10 PM but this location closed it even earlier. We stopped by to make a quick return, but the desk was already closed. You can still shop, but if you need help with returns, price adjustments, or any issues, you're out of luck for the night. The explanation given right as we walked in was "not enough staff for checkout". That's sorta strange considering self-checkout kiosks are available. It's honestly a bit ironic -- Walmart's policy be like "hey you can spend money in our store, but you can't get customer service while here, come back later!" So what if I just bought something and saw there was an issue with my receipt? All this to say, Walmart's customer service hours has room for opportunities. Closing the service desk a full hour (or more) before the store is not exactly customer-centric. Frankly, it's inconvenient and when compared to other retailers like Target, where customer service stays open until closing, this policy just doesn't make much sense. If you need help with anything beyond shopping, make sure to plan to come earlier for returns or customer service before 9:30 PM.
