I entered the completely empty restaurant and saw a man leaning against the counter with his arms crossed. No greeting whatsoever, just silence. He already looked like he was in a bad mood. I commented on the gambling machines that were inside the restaurant and he made a snarky comment about where was I from that this is unusual. I let him know I was from out of state. I then asked for recommendations. He said the breaded steak sandwich is popular. I was feeling more like Italian beef, which is what I ordered. Even though I ordered the sandwich, wet, the beef came out dry, and had three pieces of green pepper on it. I don't know if I have ever had just green pepper on an Italian beef sandwich before. There was nothing extraordinary about the sandwich. Shaved beef on a bun. That's it. As basic as it gets. It was lacking any type of flavor, so I tried to dress it up with salt and pepper, which only helped marginally. I sat down at a table, not more than 15 feet away from where the owner was leaning against the counter. Not once did he check in with me to see if I enjoyed the food. I was still the only customer. I think, even if I really enjoyed the food, which I did not, I would not return to this restaurant based on the attitude of the owner alone. He does not know how to run a business, much less make Italian food. read more

Wonderful little find outside of Chicago. You order your food, go sit down and they bring you everything. There is light Italian music playing in the background and it's pretty well lit. The food is great and there is more than enough to fill you up. Not pictured is a side of bread and butter. Based solely on the good, this place would have received 5 stars. However, we cannot overlook the fact that midway through our meal we had to listen to a tirade of obscenities by the owner/manager directed at one of the employees. This was so unprofessional and unnecessary. The food was good, but I will not support a restaurant who treats their employees like that in front of customers. I got the combo with a side of au jus. But what I did was sautee half a white onion in butter in a saucepan, simmer with 6x3=18 oz tea, added a collegen peptides scoop, big pinch of Italian seasoning, black pepper, kosher salt, 2 dried chilis, the little dram of their drippings, & drenched the shaved meat while eating, as I could have redipped the bread if I wanted, but they did do a good job of that from the get go,, & got a heavenly French onion style soup to slurp & dip at my convenience. I'm surprised I never hit up this spot but it was gravy baby; in one of my pics I was able to create a funny moment playing with my food, but I'm just kidding around, I got several bites of that fennel seed, it was a like magic spice surprise. read more

This is a nice clean place to enjoy some good food either in house or to go. I went there specifically to try the breaded steak sandwich, and it absolutely lives up to the hype. It's a well crafted sandwich toasted nicely in the oven with some cheese. I added hot peppers and I loved this sandwich. Apparently lacking any imagination of my own, I also opted for another of their signature dishes - the chopped salad, also delicious. We came to this place after seeing it recommended by an online influencer. He said that there was a breaded steak sandwich there similar to Riccobene's in Chicago. Sonny's definitely delivered, with the breaded steak and red sauce on a fresh roll. We also had an Italian sub which was out of this world! It was full of meat and veggies plus an Italian dressing that was perfectly zesty! The Italian sausage with a red sauce that was the same one on the steak sandwich and green peppers was good, nothing out of the ordinary. A safe choice for picky eaters. Inside was sparse but I overheard that they are adding video gaming to the place, which for me is a negative. I'm so tired of seeing this everywhere we go, but I guess it brings in money. It's counter service, so don't expect to be waited on, which is perfectly OK by me. It was nice to be able to walk up and talk to people that work there including the owner. The food is great, but the management is poor and the staff is pretty rude. I guess they've recently gone semi-viral due to a food influencer saying they're better than Rico Benny's in Chicago, while I would agree with the statement-- I do not think it's worth paying more in the burbs than you would at Rico's, and the wait times are atrocious. (You can't call ahead to order, or order online, they will leave the phone off the hook or disable ordering...) I think if everything was ironed out, and you could get your food in under 15 minutes. This would be an easy to recommend 5 out of 5. As is now it's a solid 3.5 overall, but a 5 for the food. I'll split the difference and call it a 4 since Yelp doesn't believe in .5's read more

Went to Sonny's on Lake st in Roselle to try their FAMOUS chopped salad. I walked in , it was about 7:30 on a Tuesday ,i inquired about the size, they have 2 sizes small and large. I was shown a small and it was the size of a side order , so I inquired about the large , I was hungry -ish and the small would not have touched my appetite so I asked about the large and I was shown a regular to go tin. I kindly said "that's ok and slowly walked out , we were almost at the door and the boy at register yelled "you know things are expensive " I agreed and walked out . I couldn't believe a little punk would yell that out . Accept that a customer , not myself but possibly someone who decided to stop by and not have enough $$ and be yelled at by a punk .if he's a employee he's doing a disservice to a place we could've enjoyed , living around the corner. The employees are sweet, quiet, yet very helpful. The only reason that we give it 4 stars however is because the owner can be somewhat rude (mostly to his employees). He seems to have a bit of a short temper with them in front of customers. I do not know his full story, but find it uncomfortable to hear and watch the tense harsh interactions on his part. I have eaten at sonny's quite a few times and let me tell you they don't disappoint. The food in my opinion is very good. I have had the meat ball sub, italian beef, their 8 finger cavatelli pasta with the meat sauce and their famous bread steak sandwich. All great dishes. The portions are well served. Service always is great when i go. The atmosphere feels like i am in an Italian deli. Music playing great oldies from Sinatra to Dean Martin. At first there was a bit of a wait to grab a table but they have expanded so there is room now for more to be seated and enjoy their great food. He said and I quote... move over Portillos, one Italian sausage of a sandwich has taken the spot (for him!). The foil which the sandwich was wrapped was not even oily... The vodka sauce is very good and not a big meatball person but after tasting them they are good.
