Dr Salter cared for my cats when I was living in Massachusetts. My boy Shadow had a cough and when I was asked if there was coughing I told him there was but he said it was probably asthma. I am sorry that I never pushed for testing. Shortly after relocating and a routine exam and vaccines with a new vet visit Shadow came home with labored breathing, his brother however was fine. I ended up taking Shadow to urgent care where ex rays showed he had cancer. I was devastated when the vet told me it would be inhumane to take him home. I ended up making the painful choice of letting him go. I don't know for sure had it been caught in time could something have been done but at least I wouldn't have been surprised when I was told. read more

I took my dog here for heartworm treatment. Although the treatment itself went well, they sent her home on two medications that should never be prescribed together (which I was later told by vets at Angell). I called Animed to tell them what the vets at Angell told me and they were very rude to me and basically said- thank you for your concern, but it is not a problem. And when I tried to object, they got even ruder. I would not recommend this vet and will not bring my dog back. read more

The vet works with the rescue we got our dog from and was supposed to administer heartworm treatment. They were unhelpful with questions I had after the first shot, rude on the phone, and refused to give us pain medication. Then they called less than a week before the second round of treatment to cancel, since they are selling the practice! It's unethical to start treatment if you cannot finish it. I hope he is retiring. read more

Dr. Salter is is like an old country Doctor. I say this with great appreciation. I see negative reviews here complaining about Animed and I have to laugh. Dr. salter is not a kiss your ass veterinarian. he is practical and straightforward. He doesn't sell you meds that aren't necessary, he doesn't overreact in the interest of running up your bill. I have had many dogs and cats over the the past 50+ years and have used many different veterinarians, Dr. salter is great. If you want a vet to blow pleasant breezes up your keisters, sell you crap that you don't need, and react to your pet as if it were the king or queen of Monaco go to some gold plated beautiful storefront veterinary operation. Make sure you have your checkbook. I for one will always respect Dr. Salter for his practical view of pet care. read more

They are amazing. They treated my cat like it was their own through its fight with cancer and when we had to put him down they were amazingly kind and cried with us. Yea they closed for a move but they kept us all updated on fb and via phone. And didnt leave us waiting, they made amazing arrangements for everyone. The new facility has plenty of parking and better layout!! The vet techs are spectacular!! Oh and dr Salter is also great! read more

As a new Dedham resident, was in search for a local vet for my 13 year old Snowshoe cat. That went on hold when pandemic hit and once things were opening back up, contacted three different local vets with no success of getting a new patient appt for my cat until I called Animed. 4th time proved to be a charm. I was warmly greeted by the vet techs at check in, the visit was efficient, no wait, and I was allowed to be with my scared cat in exam room with a mask on when most practices are making owners sit in car even when the pets have to be put down. I am so glad I found this practice. Dr. Salter is an old school, no nonsense Veterinarian who is very fair with prices too. Animed will now be my regular vet. read more

I am not sure where some of the negative reviews for Animed have gone, so I elected to create an account and write one myself. This is my first and only review on Yelp, as my experience at Animed was so horrifying I elected to create and account and make my (and my dog's) voice heard. If zero stars were an option, this review would have none. We came to Animed from reviews online, and we were fond of their pricing. When it came time for our dog, Charlie, to be put on medication we put our faith in the doctors and staff at Animed. We were completely wrong to do so. They prescribed our dog 10x the dose of medication that he needed (5mL per day as opposed to .5mL per day), and when we questioned them we were told to do exactly as the bottle said and everything would be fine. They didn't return our phone calls, and never even bothered to apologize when they discovered that the dosage was incorrect. When I FINALLY spoke to the vet himself I said to him "if this were any other type of medication, my dog would be dead" to which he replied "that certainly wouldn't have been a good situation". Ummm, excuse me? Mistakes happen, but this is egregious. Perhaps I wouldn't post a nasty review if: they returned my phone calls, they apologized, they offered any follow-up care for a dog that received 3 months of medication in 3 days. Unless you'd like to have a dead pet, I wouldn't go here - I'd rather pay more and have a vet I can trust. read more

Dr. Salter and the entire staff at Animed had a hand in saving my dog's life. I have never been to a veterinarian's office where the warmth and care for animals was so palpable. As a crazy dog person, leaving my furry baby with anyone is a challenge - but - knowing that he was getting top of the line care AND lots of affection put my mind at ease. Every one of the staff - Dr. Salter, Gretta, Ariane, Katie and Michelle have my eternal gratitude. These people will have my business for as long as we live in the area. Everything about this vet is terrible. None of the people who work there knock before entering rooms, which is dangerous especially because the rooms are literally the size of very small bathrooms. The waiting area is a mess with an open cat litter box, plus dirty cat litter clumps in a trashcan next to the chairs. A small child who looked like the daughter of one of the vet techs was wandering around by herself, even into the restricted kennel area. Dr. Salter is dimissive and non communicative. I made the vet appointment and the office didn't want any info or paperwork BEFORE the visit. I was just told that I could bring in my dog for heartworm treatment and take him home after the injection. My dog had already tested positive for heartworm with another vet and had corroborating xrays, but first Dr. Salter said that it probably wasn't heartworm. Without addressing my dog at all, he leaned over his body and grabbed his side to listen to his heart and lungs--exactly what you're not supposed to do with a strange dog, especially one you have requested NO info about. Dr. Salter asked for the test results from the other vet, then left the room. That's the last time I saw him. Ten minutes later, one of his techs (wearing sweats and fleece slippers), came and asked to take my dog to the kennels. I asked what for--apparently he was now going to be staying at the vet over night, which no one had told me. They didn't ask if he's on any medication, if he has allergies or eats special food, or even offer to let me say goodbye. The tech said "you're all set!" And would've just left him away and if I hadn't stopped her. Don't take your pets here if you think they deserve compassionate care. read more

I have been going to Animed for over 25 years. Dr. Salter is a wonderful, very knowledgeable, kind, vet. He can diagnose a problem as soon as he sees it without recommending you spending thousands of dollars on needless procedures. The entire staff truly cares about every animal and will also fit you in if you ever have an emergency , they will not turn you and your loved pet away. I honestly thought I was bringing my dog to be put down a few months ago, she looked like she had suffered a stroke but it turn out to be another ailment that affects balance (she couldn't even stand up). Well after two weeks of tender loving care by Dr Salter and his EXCELLANT staff she came home on the road to recovery. During the entire stay they allowed us to come visit her at various time of the day and were quite accommodating. In my case, I was desperate to find help with my beloved, older male cat with behavioral problems. Dr. Salter and his team are top notch. I have been using him for 10 years and my pets have received excellent care from him and his staff. I recently had to see another Vet because his office was closed. The worst experience of my life! Not only did they withhold information about test results from me they failed to recognize that my cat was having an adverse reaction to an injectable antibiotic they gave her. I wasn't sure she was going to survive. I called Dr. Salter and told him what was going on and he saw her immediately. She is recovering nicely now but I will never use anyone but Dr. Salter. So the vet there may be as wonderful and competent as they come, but I did not meet him and the staff in the front could not have treated me any worse. I have been fostering a cat for the last few months who needed 'to have her eye removed' so I brought her in. The woman asked her name, then took her out back without a word and disappeared. After 15 minutes of standing there like a fool someone asked if I was all set. I said I didn't know; I hadn't been given any paperwork, been asked or had they offered to answer any questions, or been told when I could return. I was quite open about the fact that this little lady was very scared and in the months that I've had her that today was the first time I was able to catch her. You would think that they may tell me what to expect when I brought her home, what aftercare would be involved, what accommodations she would need, etc.? Nope. I picked her up after work, they handed me her in her carrier and said she did great and seemed ready to let me walk out the the door. So I chased down the tech and (to her annoyance) started asking questions such as: are there antibiotics? How should I clean the incision? Is it okay that she is with her sister in the apartment. With absolutely no sense of empathy or understanding she said how she needed to be kept isolated in a separate room for at least 2 weeks and separated from her sister. Really? I live in an apartment in Boston with 3 roommates and 1 bathroom. She suggested I put her in a spare room, the bathtub, or a closet. When I told her about the bathroom she replied, 'oh, your roommates can't keep an eye on her?' Oh yes, just what they need, a terrified cat lunging at them as they go to the bathroom at 2am!! I'm a grad student living in Allston, if we had an extra bedroom we would have another roommate. And on top of that I have to dropper antibiotics into her mouth twice a day. Remember that part where I can't get near her? No empathy, no idea of what to expect until I was out the door, and no usable solutions. Don't bother if you expect any support from the tech staff. read more

This is long....but you have to read this whole story... I took my newly adopted dog Charlie to the Animed Pet Hospital in Dedham, ma to talk to the vet about his separation anxiety. Neither behavioral modification techniques have worked nor have any homeopathic medications, so the next step was to talk to a vet. The vet decided that Charlie needed some anti-anxiety meds to help him deal with the issue and to be more responsive to the behavior modifications. The vet, Dr. Will Salter, says out loud to me as he heads in to see another patient that the vet tech will give me 3 weeks of medication and we will assess in 4-5 days the effectiveness of the drugs and talk about upping/downing the dosage. He leaves, and the vet tech has to compound the medication for me. When she is done, the vet tech hands me the bottle of meds and tells me to give him 5mgs 2x a day, which is also printed on the bottle. She hands me a plunger syringe, which she shows me how to use and what line to fill it to. I ask about possible side effects to watch out for, and I am told none...though when I get home and Google the medication I find that there are side effects to be mindful of. For example, the drug website says that in their clinical trial 20% of dogs vomited when given the drug- which would be good know. I get home and give Charlie his first dose. But then I check out the bottle and it says that there are 25mg of liquid in the bottle, which clearly will not last 3 weeks. It seems to be that there is a big difference between that and what the vet said, so I call the vet- only to discover that the number on it is wrong. I find the correct number and get a vet tech named who, when I explain to her the issue, says the vet is in with a patient and will call me back. 5 hours later, no phone call. I call back because I don't want to give Charlie another dose without talking to the vet. I call again and she says they haven't forgotten about me and that the vet will call me in a half hour, but that the directions for the medication sounds fine. The vet does not call me back, and when my fiancée calls again at 5:45, they do not pick up the phone, although they are open until 7, and continue not to do so until closing. I figure the vet tech is right- this is their job after all, making diagnosis and dispensing medication, maybe I am just being a nervous new 'parent' and give him his evening dose and his next dose in the morning. My fiancée calls them again this morning and gets a different vet tech who tells her that the bottle is supposed to say .5 mg 2x a day NOT 5 mg 2x a day. We had been told to give Charlie 10x the amount of medication that we were supposed to be giving him. Luckily, Charlie's dosage was set low enough that multiplying it by TEN did not kill my dog- but on pretty much any other medication he would have died, and god only knows what complications could still arise for him. What kind of place wrongly prescribes medication and then doesn't return phone calls when someone calls to ask about it and/or tells them to follow the directions? The vet tech who mixed the 3 weeks worth of medicine into the compound was the same one who printed the label and showed me how much to give him, so she should have caught her mistake. To make matters worse, we've been getting the run around all day as we try to actually speak to the vet in person about what happened, as the vet techs just seem to want to cover it up. My fiancée and I are very lucky, but want to make sure that no one else runs the risk of having their dog or cat harmed by this completely incompetent staff. Making a mistake is one thing, though a big thing, but allowing for it to continue because no one will return my phone calls is another. When someone calls saying that they have a question about the dispensing of medicine, that call needs to be taken seriously and followed up on. And when an issue arises, people need to be able to speak to a vet. DO NOT take your animals to Animed unless you think they'd benefit from substandard care and overdoses of medication. read more

if i could give less than one star, i would. as far as i'm concerned, they killed two of my dogs years apart. after the 1st died, i foolishly continued to use their services. then years later, their neglect killed another of my dogs. the dog was suffering, his kidney was shutting down, he was losing weight.. they insisted that he must have diahrea. PLEASE. they did NOTHING. it was too late by the time we switched over to "Dr Wolf's" in Dedham & they correctly diagnosed him. Dr Wolf's ROCKS! read more

Animed was the absolute best place possible that I could've brought my pet for a recent vacation I took. They have been suggested to me by many people and I wouldn't be opposed in any way, shape or form to come back after my recent extraordinary experience here. Jordan was incredible with keeping our pet and all other items I brought with clean and everything done perfectly. The other staff were all super friendly, kind, and helpful as well. I was very skeptical as this was the first experience away from my home; however it was very impressive how incredible this place is run. I give major credit to management and have nothing but the most respect for the amazing team here at Animed. It's located right on Providence Highway in Dedham, right off I-95 (Exit 15A), right outside Legacy Place. Super convenient location! I would recommend Animed to anyone..... it's a great (& local for me!) place for pets! 5 stars, no question ever. read more

I adopted my now 3 year old cat from Animed when she was almost a year old. I must start with the good, the woman working in the front and helping me look at kittens was very nice and helpful. She brought each kitten out for me to see and allowed me to visit with each one telling me a little about all of them. When we choose to adopt a kitten she gave us a litter pan and some food to tide us over until the next day when we could go to the pet store and stock up. We ended up falling in love with this one little kitten who couldn't have been sweeter. But she made this little snorting noise over and over again which after having other cats in the past we couldn't help but notice seemed odd. We asked over and over again if it was normal and if the kitten was healthy. They assured us as many times as we asked that she was perfectly healthy and that some kittens make this noise. Knowing better than to believe what they said, we adopted the kitten and brought her to our previous vets office the next day. They diagnosed her with an upper respiratory infection. They thought that had she been at Animed much longer she most likely wouldn't have survived. After a few weeks of medicine our cat was completely better, she no longer makes that noise and seems much happier. Long story short: Adopt the cats that are there, they need homes. The adoption experience is made easy by them but you should probably go elsewhere for your pets care. read more

I have been going to Animed since 1994. He treated my dog Cocoa for over 13 years. After her passing, he has been treating my 2 new dogs. He is a kind and gentle person - and I know I will see HIM, not some other random vet. His staff has been there for many many years as well - a sure sign of a good place to be. Do not bring your animal to this vet. He showed a huge lack of understanding of common dog behavior and put my dog through unnecessary pain. We went in to get his nail cut (due to it being cracked) and he only put my dog under sedation AFTER cutting his nail when he continuously commented on how it would be extremely painful. My dog was so traumatized he even threw up the next day when I touched his leg. I will never go here again no matter how cheap their services are. read more

Dr. Salter is awful and as others have said, non communicative and dismissive. Took my cat there, left him for the day. Never spoke with Dr. Salter but was informed by Greta (who is the only good one there), what was wrong with cat. Cat had spondylosis and bronchitis. Needed steroid shot and antibiotics. Law required I had to get rabies shot (which I should have KNOWN wasn't a good idea when cat was already sick with bronchitis). Cat got rabies shot and within next 36 hrs. had horrible reaction. Waiting up all night to call Dr. Salter's office in am hoping I could get some help. I was told cat needed to see a specialist at Tufts or Angel, there was nothing they could do. This wasn't even 48 hrs. after I paid over 300.00 for treatment. Anyway, long story short. Cat will lose his foot and Dr. Salter blames everyone but himself for his lousy diagnosis and follow up. I am disputing what I paid and furthermore, will be going to small claims court for reimbursement for the additional charges I will be facing for surgery to remove my cats necrotic foot. I am not only angry, but devastated and full of guilt for trusting that dismissive jerk Dr. to begin with. read more

The ladies at desk were polite, but the doctor was rude, talkative (poor listener), lecturing about dog food types (random), and drew what 2/3 vets believe to be the wrong conclusions about my dog's labwork. My dog is a senior, but supposedly went from being healthy in May to having two serious conditions requiring medication in October (one of which is kidney failure). However, the prior vet in May and another vet nearby (Dedham Veterinarian Assoc) were very thorough with testing and both concluded that doggy should not be medicated, does not have conditions, and explained why numbers were off (time of day urine sample taken, etc.). Really recommend Dedham Vet Assoc --- as clean as a human doctor's office, state if the art (do their own lab work and xrays), very thorough, GREAT communicators. Addressed all health history and concerns (including arthritis). read more

A year ago, we adopted a young cat that had been sheltered at Animed. We had her for a couple months before she got very sick. She was in a lot of pain and couldn't eat. We thought we should take her back to the place where she had been sheltered because the doctor and nurses knew her there. I trusted Dr. Salter because the cat shelter told me he was one of the best vets in Boston. When he looked at our cat, he ordered emergency surgery and told us to leave. He was rude and gruff, but I had no reason to believe he didn't know what he was doing. Aren't vets supposed to call you when your animal gets out of surgery? Animed doesn't. They never even called to update us for the days afterward when our cat remained in their care. We had to call them every day. After 5 days, we demanded that we come in to see our cat ourselves because we felt we weren't getting the whole story over the phone. They told us our cat had taken a turn for the worse. Suddenly, after 5 days? I felt like she had been suffering that entire time and we were powerless and misled. We went in to see our little dying cat who looked terribly mistreated and way over-medicated. Animed only operates 9-5 daily. If they have sick animals overnight, they are left in cages and drugged up. They don't have 24 hour care, which I believe some animals need after major surgery. Dr. Salter came in the room and said, "I don't know, that cat must have been poisoned. We have to put her down. Here are the papers." We were mystified! Why couldn't they update us on her condition? Why do we get the blame? Why was he so gruff when we were grieving? The poor little critter had eaten a plant that twisted up her insides. How could they think we poisoned her!? And according to Animed, the cat had been fine through surgery and the ensuing days. But the blame was still placed on us. So, we signed the papers to euthanize her and covered her up with a blanket when it was all over. We walked out to the lobby and were faced with a $1,400 bill and a dead cat. We were never given any notice of what medications they were giving her and how much these treatments cost. We were graduate students at the time and it's taken us a full year to recover from the financial burden and emotional stress Dr. Salter put us through. If I had any more time on my hands, I'd make it my mission to take away his license. I don't know if he's cruel or just doesn't care, but I feel like I can say in confidence that he killed our pet, blamed us, then charged us an exorbitant fee for his services. There are many phenomenal veterinarians in the Boston area. Please go to one of those. If you love your pet, find the best care you can. And stay far away from Animed and Dr. Salter. read more

Our cat shelter has used Animed for many years and countless rescued animals have been treated by the staff there. Most of the cats that we rescue receive their initial evaluation at Animed and we have Dr. Salter do most of our spays and neuters. We really appreciate the reasonable fees that our shelter badly needs. When it comes to surgical repair of injuries his skill are fantastic. Two years ago we found a young feral cat that had a huge wound across the back of his neck which was badly infected. His chances for survival didn't look good. He received surgery and was discharged after weeks of gentle treatment with raw honey that offers natural antiseptic properties. His foster mom continued the treatment and eventually he healed completely and is now a sweet, beautiful cat that returns her love with purrs and cuddles. read more

I'm sorry to say that I made such a mistake by going to Animed, I was actually pretty much forced to go there by the town of Dedham's canine officer after my dog got hit by a car. It was after that that I realized that they have some sort of contract with the town. From the moment I got there with my injured dog they treated her and me with such disrespect. When we arrived my dog was lethargic and having trouble breathing and Greta put a muzzle on her. Then, they carried her by her legs from the car to the back, not even with a draw sheet. It was moments later that Dr Salter came out and said "shes dead" and without sympathy or explanation left the room. Then they left her on the table with blood, etc for us to view. Anyways, I know my dog would have probably passed due to the severity of her injuries but just to know she was treated with such disrespect, suffered the last minutes of her life, and passed without dignity really upsets me and I hope no other person experience I had with that animal hospital. If you want your dog to be treated with dignity and respect, go somewhere else. read more

Dr Salter is amazing. He saved our dog's life. Our dog suffered from chronic bloody diarrhea and his previous vet at Willard Street in Quincy was unable to cure him. Dr. Salter tried a new medicine and dog food and our dog is much better. I highly recommend Dr. Salter. He is willing to see dogs on an urgent basis and he does not charge a " fit in fee" like the Willard Street vet practice. read more

They have been wonderful with each of our dogs through the various medical issues that came up as well as annual checkups and surgery. Took my dog this morning 9/8/14 she has allergies and is on shots. The tech took down info I told her scales on skin bad odor and her tail end was red raw. The Dr walks in looks at notes say she dosen't weigh 69 lbs I don't know what he was looking at , My dog weighs 36 lbs he looked at her skin smelled her put lotion in ears and said we were going to put her on pred an rx shampoo she needed to be batherd every other day I told him I had carpal tuunnels and fused qrist so he said we will bathe her tomorrow we are short handed today started to leave I had to ask him to look at her rear oh he said and put lotion on it. When I went out front the girl got the meds ready I asked if the dogs being there tomorrow were up to date with shots and could she watch my dogs lip line as she has skin lesions. She started crying and saying I'm not a groomer called for the Dr. who sais as he was walking away give her the name of an dermo Dr at Tuffs. If I didn't need the meds I would of left them/. I have had 3 different dogs that needed care and received it at Animed. The Dr got along with each one of them even though they all had different personalities. Most recently my 5 month pup got a hold of a lacrosse stick in the backyard and when I found her, her front canine was twisted and crocked. I called in immediately and the staff handled my concerns patiently and courteously. I came in within the hour and saw the doctor, he said it was a baby tooth and proceeded to rip it out and send me on my way free of charge. read more

I adopted a kitten from a shelter and she was sick. After 2 thousand dollars at my own vet, I called the shelter and she asked me to bring the kitten to her vet, Dr. Salter. Without even holding the kitten, he knew exactly what was wrong with her. He scheduled surgery and he fixed her. She is loving and so sweet she fills our hearts daily.
