Sometimes is pays to be nice... The wife really, really, really loves Indo-Pak food, and I have always resisted giving it a fair shake, so as a favor to her, I agreed to try Anmol. I am not a fan of curry; sorry, I've tried it, but I just can't get past the smell. I always thought that Pakistani food was the same as Indian food. Little did I realize the huge differences. I'm a meat-eater of the highest order and have now discovered the glory that is Pakistani food. We've been here three times now, and every time I discover a new favorite. So far, the Chicken Biyrani, Bihrnai Kabob, and the Chicken 65 have been my favs. We always order twice the amount we need so we can have leftovers. The Garlic Naan is the most awesome, garlic drenched, soft and chewy of all the Naans I have tried in Milwaukee. Mango Lassi = Liquid Health. If only the service was a tad better, and the carpet didn't look like a crime scene, I would give it 5 starts. Seriously, replace the carpet. Mango lassi tastes like liquid medicine. That also helps neutralize the heat of your entree. Garlic Naan was pillowy soft with a slavering of liquid gold butter and garlic with a sprinkle of herbs. Not for the faint of breath. Chicken 65 was exploding with flavor. Boneless chicken cubes cooked with special herbs and spices with tomatoes and curry leaves. Used the naan to wipe up every last trace of sauce. They also fulfill my request of added heat. Authentic Indian/Pakistani food?...this is the place. You KNOW it's authentic when you are the only one dining that is NOT of Indian/Pakistani origin. It was our friend's bday and we decided to come visit this hole-in-the-wall (and this is your typical hole-in-the-wall...super small is a semi-sketchy neighborhood) since her favorite food is Indian. We had about 16 people so we decided to call and see if they could save us a table. They were very nice and did so for us. We go there and we literally had a table that filled half of the entire place. The servers (all family, I believe) were very accommodating and nice. We decided to order family style so we could all share all the goodies: Vegetable Pakora: These were 'veggies' battered in spiced batter and deep fried and topped with cilantro. They were pretty much deliecious especially when you dunk them into the serving sauces that they brought out...my favorite was the sweet/tangy/spicy red sauce...not sure what it was called. Chicken Charga: This was a mediocre dish for me...not much going on here. Just a whole chicken cut into pieces and deep-fried. If you've had fried quail in Chinese banquet restaurants...this was pretty much the chicken version. Mutton Karhai - Mutton smothered in spicy gravy gravy. Chicken Korma - When they say chunks...they're literally chunks...various parts of the chicken with bones in this yummy dish. The spices were on point and the yogurt in the gravy made it smooth. Chicken Makhani - This was by far my favorite dish. The buttery red sauce was DELISH. I'm SURE this will clog your pores up with all the cream, but it was just SO GOOD when you dip it with naan. I overate and stuffed myself with naan and cream sauce because of this sucker. Daal Chana - Was never a big fan of lentils but this made me rethink that a little...just a little though. I think we ordered it to put some veggies in our diet. Mutton Biryani - This might be the most colorful rice dish I've had. The pieces of mutton in the flavorful rice was so good. I didn't even want to put any sauces from the other entrees on the rice...pretty good alone. What if there were a restaurant where the staff were attentive to your every whim; where attention to detail made for a bright, efficient, comfortable dining environment, and where the food was impeccable? (And handy to the interstate not that far from the airport, when you are travelling through - - and reasonable prices to boot?) Before ordering, came a poppadom and a small salad, with two delicious sauces. The waiter saw how much I enjoyed the poppadom and immediately brought two fresh, hot, glistening new ones. I had the Anmol platter#1 and naan, and everything came out of the kitchen sizzling. The platter was a carnival of colors and (best of all) vivid and varied flavors. Freshness, varied textures, spice, flair, imagination - - my Mitchell St. cup runneth over. In other words: bitchin'. And if you were to raise an eyebrow, or make a movement that suggested you might need an additional something, the waitstaff were beyond vigilant - - an incredible standard of service. What a gift on the way back to Madison after the flight from Chattanooga. [P.S: Someone in this thread described Anmol as "hole in the wall" -- the image that came to mind for me was a dark, dirty funky place with slipshod aspects; I also googled that phrase, and adjectives came up like "dingy", "raggedy", "indiscinct", "dive", and "dump" - - Anmol is NONE of these things, so please do not imagine it in those terms. Now that I've got that out of the way, your expectations of the food should be extremely high. Wow. This is an Indian/Pakistani restaurant. It is very very reasonably priced and the food portions are large. I went there with my boyfriend and a friend of ours. We ordered three entrees (Palak Paneer, Chicken Makhani, Chicken Biryani), Garlic Naan, and Garlic Roti. The total was $42 for three people. Pretty reasonable since you will save your money in tip (I REPEAT: You are not going here for the service or the ambiance). The Palak Paneer was creamy, but not watery, with perfectly browned palak cubes sitting on top of it. It was a large bowl. The Chicken Makhani was amazing. Again, creamy, not watery, and the chicken was perfect - not too dry. Chicken Biryani was also amazing. It's a rice dish and the rice was perfectly cooked with the chicken being perfect and moist. Sometimes, with Indian food, I find the chicken to be dry and that was not the case here. The garlic naan was fluffy and looked just amazing (see my pictures) and the garlic roti was also hot and fluffy. To be honest, this is quite possibly the best Indian food I've had in the Midwest. Now that I've lured you in with the sound of amazing Indian food, please understand that this is a tiny hole in the wall. The service sucks and the place isn't super clean. We never got a Diet Coke that we ordered, ended up asking for a water pitcher to be left at our table, and had to retrieve our own silverware. In all honesty, I am still tempted to give this place 5 stars because it was so tasty, but given the service and the actual environment, people would think I'm nuts giving it 5 stars. If you're really that concerned about it, then order delivery or takeout. I observed the cooks bringing out orders every few minutes and people were popping in constantly around the dinner hour. When I checked online, they seem to have a pretty big delivery territory...so that's an option for you as well. As long as you have the right expectations, you should enjoy yourself just fine. I've had take out from Anmol a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed the food each time. Last night, I wanted to check the place out in person. They may get more business at a different location, but I think they rely on regular customers and those in the know, and there's a good reason for this. The food was delicious. Perfectly spiced with very generous portions. We initially just ordered a couple dishes, but kind of kept going as everything sounded delicious. Per Sona B, the chicken makhani was the best, not that the biryani and mutton korma were anything buy awesome. My girlfriend was also excited about the Qeema Samosas. They were smaller than what I expected, crispy skin. The filling was so flavorful. When I tell you my fiancé and I crave Anmol on a weekly basis, we are not kidding you. We LOVE the food here. Whether you are ordering it delivered or sitting in person, the food is always delicious and satisfying. Our top recommendations are the chicken makhani and the beef nihari. The makhani sauce is so rich and velvety and so satisfyingly savory. We often have to make a double order to take home. The Nihari is so uniquely spiced and not something I have ever tasted at any other restaurant. The beef is cooked so tender it basically falls off of the fork as you eat. I've tried the chicken makhani and the garlic naan. I'm still at the point where when I return, it's the only thing I want to get... I forget to order rice, but who cares? The stuff is so absolutely delicious, there's no sense beside just letting it *slide right down your throat. Take leftovers home and reheat it with some rice, add some greens and dinner is served. Life is good! The only time I had to wait an especially long time was when the kitchen was trying to push out a large catering order and well I just had to wait... Television is tuned to CSTAN, but would have appreciated English captioning - I have this complaint of many ethic establishments though. I'll try to learn your language if you try to learn mine! I do not know that this is the best Pakistani food in Milwaukee, but if it is not, OMG, it has to be close. 5 of us ate there, we suggested what we liked and what we knew we wanted. Our waiter suggested dishes and assured us that we would love it. He was correct. Next time, we will go there with more than 5 so that we can get even more dishes to sample. Ahhhh finally a great restaurant with Pakistan cuisine. The restaurant is very small and tends to stay full a lot, but no worries they do have takeout. I mainly had vegetarian friendly entrees that were so delicious I had to hum in delight while eating. No doubt the best tasting South Asian food in the Milwaukee area. With that said, this place gets 1 Star for its cleanliness and customer service. If I could give it zero stars I would. It pains me to write this as I really do like the taste of the food, but some things are just inexcusable. The building this place is in is just disgusting. I don't know how it can pass any health inspections. I know they are probably trying to save on rent, but if they are, they shouldn't be charging 25 dollars per plate. You either are in a dump and charge whole in the wall prices, or you upgrade to a nicer building and up your prices; you can't have the best of both worlds and rip off people in the process. That's slimy. Other than being overpriced, I would like to discuss the most egregious offense. The last time I dined there, I found a LIVE ANT crawling in my rice. I brought this up to the owner and waitress who both seemed unmoved by it, as if it was almost expected. Since then, I have been too disgusted to give this place another chance. It's truly a shame because I really enjoyed the food. Hopefully this place starts reading something about basic sanitation and implementing some more hygienic habits. I'm a huge fan of this little hole in the wall. It's a tiny dive, there is at least one waiter there who is decidedly unfriendly, sometimes they plain forget about you even though there are only three people in the place... But, I'm addicted to the Chicken Makhni. It's just plain fabulous. Brightly colored and gorgeous visually, the taste has depth of flavor. Not spicy in the hot sense, but spicy in the what is this I am tasting, and what is this I am now tasting sense. Soak up the sauce is some naan. Oooooooooh. I waited to review this place after I'd had it a couple of times and it is as good as it gets. First time I tried this place a few weeks ago was via grubhub.com delivery of which I was skeptical to have delivery Indian food, however I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and authenticity of the food. Second go, I ordered take out and wanted to see what this place looked like and to my surprise it is the real deal as there was no less than 10-15 Indian families dining together in a space smaller than most Chinese takeout places. The smells were aromatic and the atmosphere was friendly and inviting. From the curb it doesn't look like much nor does the interior however the food speaks for itself. I've had Anmol probably 3 times in the last 2 months far more than I've had any other takeout/delivery restaurant and I'm weaning myself back slowly as you know what they say about too much of a good thing. If you've never had Indian/Pakistani food before try them out, careful not to order spicy foods if you're not accustom to it as some of their curry, although delicious, is like hell fire and will set your tummy ablaze. read more

Anmol is on Historic Mitchell Street and it is perhaps my favorite Restaurant in Milwaukee. It is very small, and busy, and while the servers are very nice, the guy who brings your food will abruptly announce it, and drop it on the table. This little quirk aside, the food is off the hook. Now, this food is spicy as all get out, but holy cow it is some good stuff. We started with 4 veggie samosas, and an order of the Chicken Pakora. Wow. The Chicken Pakora is now one of my favorite things in the whole wide world! It is like spicy and flavorful chicken nuggets, but yummy cut chicken (brown and white) with amazing blasts of flavor and perhaps the best breading I have ever had. After these we were pretty full. But, bring on the dinner baby! Now, we were dining with someone who has Lactose problems and our server sent us in the direction of things she could eat - so we skipped the Lassi and amazing yogurt sauce dishes (another time) and went with Mutton and Special Chicken Karahi. Both were amazing. We also ordered some rice, Palak Paneer, and Bihari Kabab (beef), and a plain and a garlic naan. It was a fourth of July celebration of flavor up in this place. Wow. Now, the beef and Palak were hot. Other dishes had a nice mix of mint, hot peppers, and were best dressed with the small yogurt and sweet sauce provided at the start of the meal. Just a food party. Amazing! They deliver (I would guess they only do South Side, 3d Ward, and Bay View), have take out, and are next door to an import store I have to check out. Anmol is a northern outlet of a Chicago Restaurant from perhaps the most famous street for Indian and Pakistani food and culture in the Midwest. Devon Avenue! If you have ever been to Devon Avenue in Chicago, you know that for about a half-mile there is nothing but Indian and Pakistani food, shops, clothing stores, lawyers, and sweets shops as far as they eye can see. We had dinner here on 5/22/2017... our first time. We'll definitely be back. I am by no means an expert on Pakistani food, so my girlfriend and I each ordered the two sampler entree platters that were on the menu. I am a meat guy and I was impressed. I didn't realize Pakistani food was so "meat heavy" (if that's what you want... plenty of other things to pick from, also). The goat ribs were amazing, the chicken cooked perfectly. There were a few other things on the plate I couldn't identify, but they were all good. They have a little parking lot on the side of the building which made it easy. We both enjoyed our first Pakistani dining adventure. Our meals came with a little plate of carrots, onions, beets and some dipping sauces, as well as a huge plate of wafer-thin bread (I'm not sure what the name of it is, but it sure was good). I had to ask multiple times for refills on my water, and the waiter didn't really seem to care we were there. It would have been a much more enjoyable experience if he would have taken the time to explain some things to us, but he just seemed uninterested. We have now tried this place twice to make sure our first experience was a valid. This place rocks! Amazingly good food without the aftertaste (come one, we've all had that experience!). I don't know the name, but the chicken dish in a tomato sauce is one of the best things I've ever eaten. The garlic nan is outstanding. We also enjoyed the eggplant and mixed veggie items. I should mention the service. It seems a bit harsh at times, but it really is not. We went with our young daughter and they treated her like a queen. This place was fantastic. it's right by my work, so I stopped one day to pick up dinner on my way home. Ordering on-line is convenient and simple. The food was ready when I got there. The decor on the inside is nothing special, but the food was amazing. I had the Chicken Makhani and the Frontier Chicken. Both were exceptional. Previous writers pointed out about the high-quality of the meat and I completely agree. The chicken in both dishes was moist and freehand perfectly spiced. I want to go back just to try more. According to the hubby, this place has the best chicken biryani next to another great restaurant on Devon in Chicago. The samosas are smaller than we have experienced in the past but very tasty. Crispy outside, full of flavor inside. Good things come in small packages, right? Not too greasy like some fried foods can be. We got lots of attention at the table. Sometimes so much it was overwhelming. They wanted us to eat more salad and poppers, which were good, but I have a tendency to eat too many carbs. We were not lacking in the carb department. We tried the fish tikka, fresh and tasty. Everything seemed to have the right level of spice. The yogurt with spices was flavorful and added a nice touch to the rice and fish tikka. I like Anmol. It's not far from my house, but it's one of those places that I forget about unless I see them on Grubhub. I've been happy with the food every time I've eaten it. I've only done takeout, and while the interior seems austere the guys who run the place seem to be pretty friendly most of the time. I'm a huge fan of their mutton korma. I eat a lot of Indian food, and I've never had a dish that was as well balanced as this. The sauce has just the right mixture of sweet and spice, and the meat is tender and just falls apart. I've also enjoyed the rolls I've tried. The fish roll with naan in particular was lovely. It was a bigger serving than I ever expected. Those with an adventurous palate will be happy. They have dishes incorporating goat feet and brain. Despite working in neuroscience, I haven't been able to work up the courage to try the brain masala--someday though. That's actually an unintentionally good segue to my next point: leave your pain-in-the-ass picky eater friend at home if you come here. Too often restaurants like this make an attempt to appeal to everybody. An Indian restaurant might include the odd Chinese soup or something. Anmol doesn't do that, and it's refreshing--they stick to what they do, and they do it very well. It means that your friend with a bland pallete won't get much out of here, but for those looking for a great, pretty authentic meal have a place to go. I do have a couple of complaints, though. (1) This isnt the fault of the restaurant, but Mitchell Street can be a pain in the ass. Parking can be hard to come by at peak times, and more often than not when I've come here for take-out I've been the target of some fairly aggressive beggars--like, the type that will knock on your car window as soon as you get parked. (2) I think $3.50 is an outrageous price for a side of plain rice. Whenever I get takeout I throw a bit of rice in the rice cooker and have it waiting ready for me by the time I get back. read more

I've just returned from this food adventure and as not to forget a moment of this amazing experience - I'm writing this review immediately. First off - we were greeted by a SUPER nice guy when we walked in the door. I was a little worried seeing as we were a group of 6 and this is a TINY little restaurant but he quickly rearranged some table and we were seated in a matter of seconds. We started off with some Chicken Pakora and sweet baby jesus it started the meal off right. Curried deep fried chicken pieces. We also got a few samosas which we also loved. We quickly decided that we needed to do this buffet style because clearly we must sample as much of the menu as possible so we ordered: chicken makhani, palak paneer, mutton biryani, the anmol platter, chicken haandi and an assortment of naan. This food blew.my.mind. I've had Indian food a couple other places but nothing on this level. I'm ruined for life. It was all so fresh and the curries were soooo incredibly tasty. The meats - omg the meats - fall apart tender and juicy. I've never had meat prepared so well. Usually I'm not a huge mutton fan, but they've converted me. I'll eat their mutton and love every second of it. The service was also amazing. The guy who served us is new to the restaurant. Apparently he used to manage an Applebee's in Missouri and Anmol hired him because they had noticed that some of the negative things people had to say about the restaurant were regarding the service. GREAT addition Anmol. He made our experience so much better and was able to explain all of the different plates to us so we knew what we were ordering. We pretty much swarmed this restaurant with our group of 18ish people. They normally don't take reservations but they were nice enough to accommodate our large group. This was my first taste of Indian food since coming out to the Midwest and I was desperately craving it's rich, spicy, creamy goodness that makes you feel so good on those cold and chilly nights. Fortunately, Anmol didn't disappoint. We ordered a ton of dishes and most were excellent. The vegetable pakora was nice and crispy and paired well with the various dipping sauces that we were given. The chana daal was perfectly textured and hearty and earthy. The chicken makhani (basically chicken tikka masala?) was tasty as usual. The Chicken charga was similar to tandoori chicken, and I actually liked it more than the tandoori chicken that I've had in the past. It was really crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My only regret is that we didn't order the dishes spicier! Our waiter assumed we wanted everything mild, but at the end of the night I assured him that us California kids aren't amateurs when it comes to spicy food. read more

Oh how I want to give 5 stars for the food - the chicken makhani is one of the - if not THE - best Indian dishes I have ever eaten. I mean, seriously. Maybe even occasionally less than spotty. Depends on the customer load. When my boyfriend and I were one of 3 couples in there, they did fine. When the place was full, they were like fish out of water. There didn't seem to be any plan in place for what to do with a full customer load, and the service suffered drastically. I know a full house is a good thing for Anmol, so I hate to take a star away for its negative effect on our experience, but I think it can be fixed. I'll go back soon, and hopefully add the +1. Great food, great service if you speak the language. Since I do, I get the kind of service only reserved for close relations. I have been eating there pretty regularly for like 5 years now and have had consistently great experience. They do authentic cuisine - so you need to be open to different favors - they are not going to dumb down the dish for you. I especially like the Pakistani spices in Chhole and Daal Chana. Excellent tea as well. Recently I have started ordering paratha instead of naan and it's been working excellently. There is parking on the side. The area is not upscale but I never felt concerned there. I will keep visiting this place and heavily recommend that you give a try too. read more

All dishes we tried were very good. A chicken item was pretty skimpy on the chicken and was more a strictly rice dish. Service was extremely attentive. Only problem I have is the menu is pretty extensive and if not familiar with offerings very difficult to pin point what would be the best for your particular tastes. Fortunately I was with 4 others and we were able to sample a pretty good selection. 2nd time I went tried the goat and was exceptional. If I lived closer would definitely go back more often for carry out. Place is small and can fill up at certain times. Anmol Restaurant might not be much to look at from the outside -- there are no bright lights or neon signs announcing its existence, and even the front door is deeply recessed a good 10 feet from the sidewalk. Once you're through the door, the Pakistani and Indian restaurant isn't much to look at from the inside, either. The lights are bright and the small dining room is relatively sparse and quiet. But the smells -- the rich scents of curry and fresh cilantro wafting from the kitchen in the back -- are enough to make you sit down and pick up a menu. Some Indian restaurants in Milwaukee, like Bombay Sweets, put a special emphasis on vegetarian fare, as Hindus value the cow as a sacred animal. But Anmol is more a Pakistani place, which is why you'll find beef, mutton, goat, chicken, fish and even brain on the menu in various forms, but you won't find pork, which is a no-no in Muslim countries. The front of the menu clearly states the restaurant's strict use of Zabiha Halal meat, which has been hand-slaughtered by Muslims according to Islamic Shariah. The chickens it uses are organic and hand-fed by Amish. Nevertheless, the menu begins with five meat-free entrees ($7.95-$9.95) -- a curry, two masalas, the palak paneer and a daal -- each of which is served with a platter of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and onion (though we weren't quite sure how to incorporate these vegetables into the meal). The saalan, or curries, make up the bulk of the menu and none of the 24 options ($9.95-$12.95) is meat-free. Next up are the "from the grill" offerings, including beef kababs, grilled fish and even a catfish fry battered in special spices. In accordance with Muslim tradition, there is no alcohol served at Anmol, so don't expect that fish fry to be beer-battered. A real Anmol highlight is its biryani selections, which come with either chicken, mutton, shrimp, fish or vegetables. The dish is based in basmati rice and mixes meats or vegetables and spices and is made even better with the addition of the complimentary green yogurt chutney. The portion sizes here are on the large side and if you order a round of naan, you are guaranteed to be stuffed, or going home with leftovers. Still, if its variety you crave, the vegetable pakora appetizer is one of the best you'll find anywhere in Milwaukee. For $4.50, you receive a full plate of battered and fried vegetables and spices that are soft rather than crunchy and perfectly coated in cilantro. The samosas, on the other hand, are slightly less impressive. Available stuffed with vegetables or meat, the small crispy triangles are not what you might expect from a traditional restaurant. They've got a bit of a spicy kick, which is nice, but are small and seem unworthy of the $2.50 price. Anmol has been in business for several years now and seems to be doing well. It's always a good sign when other Pakistanis frequent the restaurant and order in abundance via Anmol's catering service.
