Someone needs to inform Ann Sather's chef that avocado is not guacamole. I ordered this item: "Mexican Omelet* $16.50 An Avocado Delight Served with Homemade Salsa" and was unpleasantly surprised to find that it was a guacamole omelette, which, by definition, is not avocado, it is guacamole. When I saw "An Avocado Delight" I thought it would be an omelette with avocado, the flavor of plain avocado is entirely different from the flavor of guacamole. Seems like basic gastronomy to me. My dining companion ordered the same thing and felt that the eggs tasted like they came from a carton, rather than being fresh. It's been decades since I last ate at Ann Sather and my feelings were confirmed, go for the cinnamon rolls, then leave. read more

I visited Ann Sather with some friends that live in the area while I was visiting Chicago! The vibe of this place is definitely a more vintage-grandma vibe. Pastry case in the front, yellow hues and lots of wood make it clear that this establishment has been around for a while! The good thing is that there's lots of seating and service here. When we were seated, I put in an order for coffee. It's nothing special, just some diner coffee and half & half on the table. I was shocked that at the end of this visit my bill on coffee was over $3 for it being sub-par without cold creamer, but it was unlimited pour so I guess I understand. I placed an order for a build-your-own breakfast wrap - eggs with green pepper, onion and cheddar cheese. I got the side of cinnamon rolls & fruit. The cinnamon rolls came quickly and were fluffy and sweet - I understand why they are known for these! However, you do have to eat them quick because they get hard pretty fast. It was a busy Sunday morning, so I understand a little bit of slow service but it took an unusually long time for us to get our food. We watched everyone around us order, eat and leave so we were getting very impatient and couldn't find our waitress to ask what was going on. When our food finally came, she had explained a chef walked out in the middle of their rush - which I understand but was still a bit frustrating. The fruit bowl that came with my wrap was very fresh and delicious, better than other fruit sides I've had at brunch. However, I felt like my wrap was a little bland. It didn't taste like the eggs were salted and it seemed very stingy on the toppings I ordered in it. I don't mind adding hot sauce, but I had to add some with every bite since this was so bland. However, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the wrap stayed together so that was a win. Overall, I'd say this place is just ok and I don't really understand the crazy hype for this restaurant. So it's Friday night, and I am already thinking about breakfast in the morning. Last Saturday, I paid a visit to Ann Sather's for breakfast. I just might go back! Let me tell you, this meal did not disappoint after a morning's run. (Don't judge me. Yes, I worked out and had cinnamon rolls afterwards. Hey, I was carbo-loading.) When you are craving pancakes, I wasn't expecting the Swedish delight that was set before me. Thin, but very flavorful even without the syrup. My bacon was nice a crispy. The cinnamon rolls were compliments of my very nice and helpful server, and they made my day. Speaking of great customer service, my server was very kind and sweet. She took pride in helping others. Fast forward to the future and I found myself in Chicago on vacation so I had to stop by! Without dragging out this review, the food was absolutely DELICIOUS! It's really that simple. The cook was super busy , old and she didn't want to give him a heart attack. Plus she couldn't question him. When the eggs came out the whites were under done but I ate around that part. I did appreciate the extra hollandaise sauce. Hash browns were bad. Some burnt potatoes some not fully cooked. Husband got an omolette with ham and cheese. We were staying just down the street and chose this restaurant because three complete strangers (hotel clerk, a store owner, and a happy patron exiting the place) enthusiastically recommended it. The enthusiasm was well deserved! We were seated immediately at a cozy table with coffee arriving as we sat down; menus with recommendations and explanations quickly following. The food was delicious - I've never had cheese and bacon stuffed potato pancakes before, and the experience is definitely worth repeating. My partner enjoyed one of the many versions of eggs benedict, with perfectly poached eggs and avocado, house-made muffins, and fresh fruit on the side. After we exited, we walked down the block, turned around, and went back in to buy more cinnamon rolls to share with family we were visiting. The cinnamon roll was tinier in size than my husband's which I imagine were all baked on the same tray which means if they're all different sizes, then they won't bake evenly. Whew!!!! I got a lot to say about this phenomenal, little Scandinavian eatery that is now hands down my favorite breakfast spot in the Windy City. It's got it all - home-cooked meals, friendly service and amazing value! I'm honestly shocked I haven't heard more about this gem! It impressed my husband and I so much we actually ate here two mornings in a row. Yeah, back to back, same trip. It's THAT good. Both times we visited the OG location on Belmont. On the first morning we began our meal with a fresh cup of joe ($3.00). We decided to share the Monte Cristo Breakfast (two pieces of homemade French toast topped with a slice of ham and scrambled eggs with Swiss cheese, served with a side of important lingonberries, $14.45). If the description doesn't make it obvious, this dish is huge. And to add more, it comes with TWO sides, ours being two cinnamon rolls and hash browns. It was SO. MUCH. FOOD. And not only that, but it was so much GOOD food. They hit the mark on both quantity and quality. Everything blended so well together. This was by far the best version of this famous dish I have ever had. The ham was so perfect, I love it when it's prepared just right. The egg was super moist and all the way cooked, and there was a very appropriate amount of cheese. The toast is 100% housemade, oh God it was delicious. I could have eaten it by itself. Day two my husband went full on treat yo'self and ordered the French Toast Fantasy (mascarpone-filled cinnamon rolls battered, grilled and topped with granola and seasonal fresh berries, $12.95). Rachel Ray's fave! And no wonder - it's a sugary mess (in a good way). Holy cow this dish can and will satisfy your sweet tooth. Honestly I found it a little overwhelming. It was like sugar, on fat with sugar, and a side of sugar. It was still good but we were only able to stomach a few bites. I think it's a unique dish, and it's good but you've got to balance it out with something bland, like eggs or plain hash browns. I went simple and just ordered 2 Eggs, Hashbrowns and Seasonal Fresh Fruit ($10.75) and husband ate half of my dish just trying to give himself a break from all the sweetness. Both days, the real winner of the meals were the cinnamon rolls. You won't find any like these elsewhere, and you'll remember them for the rest of your life. Moist, stretchy dough but not tough at all, the absolute perfect amount of cinnamon and the most delicious icing ever! I will remember these forever!!! It's as close to heaven on Earth as you can get!! They are extraordinary, mind-blowing. I ordered the Garden Omelette with sides of applesauce & hot biscuits on a quiet Sunday morning. Service was very speedy, especially considering the restaurant was filling up quickly. Myself not being a local, I could tell that the servers knew many of the diners very well & that there were many regulars - overall, extremely friendly staff and a very homey feel. Food was excellent - my omelette was done just perfectly, was just cheesy enough without being too cheesy, and the applesauce was some of the best I've ever had! My husband and I came in around 10AM on the 4th of July. We expected it to be hectic, but we managed to be seated within a few minutes of waiting. Our service was so quick is was actually shocking- we ordered our food, and by the time I got back from washing my hands in the bathroom it was already at our table. The iced coffee was amazing (almost had a chocolatey note to it), and the cinnamon rolls were also a stunner. Our main dishes were solid, akin to any other breakfast place, and were very reasonably priced. The only thing was the biscuits- they were not flaky but instead had some gluten development which resulted in a poor texture. Between three of us, we shared the garden omelet (added cheddar and bacon) and the southern benedict. We had two sides of cinnamon rolls (2 in each side dish), hashbrowns, and fruit as sides. Incredible service -- we came at 11:30am on weekend during the pride parade. I fully expected to wait a while, but our party of 3 was miraculously seated instantly. I had to try the cinnamon rolls here -- they were incredibly fresh and hot, and a side order is actually 2 rolls so you can share easily. What I did not expect was their swedish breakfast platter. I saw it and had to try it. The only reference I had for swedish food is Ikea's swedish meatballs, which I love. The platter came with a swedish pancake(similar to a crepe) with lingonberry jam, a swedish meatball in gravy, and piece of sausage, and two sides. I got the hash browns and 2 cinnamon rolls for my sides. The hash brown are rectangular pieces (not typical American hash browns). The server was very friendly and took the time to explain the sausage comes with some brown mustard for extra spice. The swedish breakfast platter and cinnamon rolls were both delightful and we're a reasonable price, with exceptionally fast service even during peak brunch times. read more

My friend and I stopped by Ann Sather for brunch on our way to Wrigley Field for a Saturday afternoon game. We were seated quickly and served coffee. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I was underwhelmed. The service was pretty good, but the food left something to be desired. The cinnamon rolls (which they are known for) were good. Very filling, but good flavor. My friend got them as one of her sides and we split the two between us. I got the bacon potato pancakes-they seemed overcooked, as they were just kind of dry and chewy. They did come with sour cream, which helped a little bit, but they just weren't great. I also ordered hash browns as a side (the potato pancakes didn't come with sides like many of the other meals did, which surprised me when I went to order but after looking at the menu again I realized my mistake). I was expected shredded, fried potatoes, but instead got cubed potatoes with some seasoning/herbs. Again, maybe my ignorance here, but that's not what I think of when I think of hashbrowns (and I didn't see anything on the menu describing them as such). Again, the service was pretty good, I waited a bit to have my water glass filled a couple of times but it wasn't bad. The ambiance is nothing to write home about, but that's fine. Always a treat to visit. Ann Sather's was a staple in the Chicago Swedish Community of Andersonville. The Swedes have left and Ann Sather's can be found on Belmont. Still home cooking and Swedish treats. I ha d the Swedish samples which was a Swedish pancake with lingonberries, Swedish meatball , traditional potato sausage, eggs, well seasoned hash browns and the traditional Swedish cinnamon rolls. They were outstanding! I wish Ann Sather's many more years. They are a Chicago tradition. They are always busy, but do have free parking in the back. My wife and I started going here before YELP was founded in 2004 and before we were married in the 1980s. This is 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney's original outpost out on West Belmont. We heard he's stepping down from local government to focus on his restaurants, and he'll be missed --- but we sure love his old standby that he bought from the founder whose name is on the marquee. Inside is pretty much the same as it was 40 years ago: a nice large dining area serving up nice breakfast and lunch food with standout cinnamon rolls. Prices are reasonable, portion sizes are just fine, and the food comes out by runners so it is fresh and hot. Tunney has this restaurant thing down pat. The waitstaff can be on or off, but you can't have everything and the runners make up for some of it. The dining room is light and airy, and you can sit and schmooze for a long time as you talk with friends over coffee and breakfast...but this place is noisy with plates banging on each other and the like. This place is old school to the max, and that is just fine. Lots of neighborhood people here, a great mix of young and old. read more

They have a corner table for 2 that is halfway in the kitchen, which wasn't super ideal but oh well. My only issue is that our waiter asked if we needed more time and we said just a few minutes and she didn't come back for 15 lol. However, the food came out so quick it didn't matter. Along with that, I had a choice of two sides, so I selected the two cinnamon rolls and fresh fruit cup. Everything I ordered was delicious! The Swedish pancake was rich and slightly sweet and went well with the tart jam. The meatball also was great, not bland and not overpoweringly seasoned with dill or allspice. It was just right. The potato sausage was a new dish to me, but I loved it! Try in with the mustard! The cinnamon rolls lived up to the hype! Soft, but perfectly risen and baked, the cinnamon balanced with the sweet icing. And the icing was rich and sweet, but not too sweet, which is an achievement rare for cinnamon rolls.
