In a city full of great donuts, Annie's is an unpretentious take on a classic style of donut. Located on Sandy Blvd and 72nd, it's a bit further out than most of the trendy stops which makes it more of a neighborhood spot than tourist destination. The donuts are pretty regular in size, some skew towards large. They've got most of the classic flavors - your plain, sugar, cake, sprinkle, glazed, filled, fritter, etc - with nothing too crazy (no risqué names or medical flavors here). I'm not a huge donut eater but also not hard to please when it comes to donuts. I thought these were pretty tasty. With a small parking lot, friendly service, reasonable prices, and cool yellow booth seating, that makes this place a four-stars overall for me.

Decent "basic" donuts (no Voodoo-esque nonsense here!) in a shop with weird hours: Annie's closes for a few hours in the early afternoon during the weekdays, reopening after 6pm until 10pm. On the weekends, get in in the morning, or you're out of luck! All the standards are here: maple bars, glazed, custard-filled, jelly-filled - you know, the basics! Although, there are a few fun surprises here and there, when they're not sold out, like the Old Fashioned. And they're inexpensive, too! You can get a dozen donuts here for less than you can purchase a half dozen at any of the "weird" donut places. However, it's recommended to get them fresh (in the morning, usually), as they don't have that great of a shelf life. Grabbing a few before they close is a bit of a gamble, especially if you're not eating them immediately. Still, Annie's Donuts feels like survivor from the days of "Old" Portland, and I mean that in the best way possible. I love supporting these locally-owned gems, and with donuts this good, for this cheap, I don't know how they turn a profit! I guess I'd better keep on supporting them, to make sure they stick around for years to come!

Old school all the way! Annie's is the kind of doughnut shop I grew up with before maple bacon, blueberry basil, lavender glazed and fruit-loop covered doughnuts became the Portland norm. At Annie's, you walk in and the doughnut counter greets you, filled with old fashioned cake doughnuts, buttermilk bars, bismarks, soft glazed, maple bars, chocolate dipped, and sprinkles. The fanciest they get is an apple fritter. The coffee is just as simple; do you want cream and sugar? This is not the triple shot, soy, no foam latte place. That is on every other corner, but not NE Sandy and 72nd! Inside there are several booths in a very simple decor, not updated to the all white, mid century mid succulent motif. It's old school, through and through. Service is the same. Friendly, efficient, on to the next. I stopped in on my way to a swim and needed some energy. Annie greeted me with a cheerful smile and conversation as if I was a regular who stopped by daily. This is what makes Annies's Doughnuts both nostalgic and charming. And the doughnuts are good. Darn good.

    The sign doesn't lie :)

There are 2 main areas, the general seating area then the register is in a waiting for area with only 1 small bench, so you're standing there until they call your name. The kitchen looked nice. Food/Service: the woman at the register was helpful and helped create a box combination since it was my first time there. Price: I don't mind the price, but I could see how others might think it's a bit expensive (21.90 total for 12 donuts and medium chai).

The place is really cool on the inside with a sample of every donut on display. Yes in that one photo, they have a donut on the ceiling! Ordering was a snap but deciding was another story. Many looked good but I was on a mission. Maple bars and apple fritters. I have had some real good ones so those are my standard. But how could you pass by a donut called "dirty old bastard"? Well I will start with the bad. The apple fritters have plenty of flavor and size but lacked apple chunks of any quality. 3 at best! Maple bar with bacon. Nearly a 4 but the glazing was way too sweet for a maple bar. Bloedows in Winona,MN, you still are the best followed by Randy's in LA. However, that dirty bastard withe the mix of chocolate, peanut butter and Oreo cookies raised the bar. No pun intended. So why a 4. The place was fun, service great and the originality of the donuts raised the score. A must stop in Portland.

The selection is definitely what makes this place stand out. So many creative flavors and over the top toppings that it almost feels more like a dessert shop than a traditional donut spot. Some donuts were surprisingly good, while others felt more fun and novelty-based than something I'd crave regularly. Portions are huge and very sweet, so sharing a few different flavors is probably the move. What I appreciated most was the overall experience and atmosphere.
