Great donut spot, but the donuts are rich. The dough is thick so when fried it turns it pretty heavy. Doesn't take away from the flavor but tough to eat a lot of them. From top left around, I had the Raspberry, Blueberry Bourbon Basil, the Orange Creamsicle and the Strawberry. Highly recommend this place, just wanted to throw out that word of caution that these donuts aren't the "crushable" kind. More of a "sip and savor"
Donuts for adults! Fun flavors, great taste, and good quality. We got four different donuts and loved them all. Don't remember what they were. One tasted like a PBJ, which was yummy; a chocolate iced with some sprinkles, one that was like an apple fritter--and don't remember the other one. Enjoyed them with sticky fingers...definitely should have taken pictures beforehand. Would definitely return.

I read an article about the must-try donut in Portland, so I gave them a shot, but I was totally wrong. They are brioche-based donut with a thick, heavy dough instead of being airy and fluffy. Well, they are unique, but they are definitely not my favorite and they are quite expensive. They're known for creative flavors, but creative does not mean it tastes good. The famous Blueberry Bourbon Basil donut was so doughy and cakey (hard type), blueberry jam was too sweet and completely overpowered the subtle taste of bourbon and basil. The apple fritter was the same, just sweet, doughy, and nothing special. We also tried the Cointreau Crème Brûlée, it is a custard donut comes with an orange liqueur pipette. Because the blueberry donut completely lack of bourbon taste, we actually used that pipette to squeeze the liqueur into the blueberry donut. We had the coffee, they're just average, nothing special. Definitely a wrong choice I made.
Came on a late Monday morning and the system was down, so we paid cash. I enjoyed my seasonal blueberry bourbon basil donut, but it wasn't anything special tbh. It was really messy inside, with crumbs everywhere on tables and on the floor. It was very visibly dirty. The staff did have the time and means to clean, but they were preoccupied talking. Perhaps it was a one off day? But the status of the store kind of dampened the experience.
Servers were nice and friendly. The donuts were okay. Creme brulee had a nice crunch when you bite not too sweet. The maple glazed is our fave. There is free parking at the back.

The raspberry rosemary old fashioned was the best donut I've had in my life, no exaggeration. These donuts are premium and are worth the adventure to try. Staff were very attentive.

However, I will continue to come to Blue Star when I'm in the Portland area. I've been meaning to try them for years and never got around to it until this week. The donuts themselves are soft and fluffy, and almost just melt in your mouth. My favorite was the chocolate one filled with custard/cream. The chocolate itself tasted like dark chocolate, and was so rich and creamy. Definitely plan to visit again. My friend and I chose 4 and cut them in half to share and it worked well. The staff was efficient and answered all of our questions. Sometimes I feel like based on response, some establishments and employees get almost annoyed when customers ask questions or take a few minutes to decide, and the staff working made us feel welcomed and kept reminding us we could take our time choosing. Great service. For the apple crumble one, we didn't get a ton of apple flavor from it. That one was ok, as it didn't give off a strong apple flavor that we initially thought would be there, but it was still delicious.

My favorite donut of the three was the chocolate banana donut. The other two were flavors that don't exactly align with my palette, however, I do think the flavors were on point and exactly as marketed/named! I would definitely go back next time in Portland and in need of a donut fix. There was also plenty of street parking available, which made visiting this donut shop straightforward and easy.

I stopped by here after my flight as the 1st coffee shop I came across ran out of Matcha. I ordered a regular sized iced matcha latte + oat milk + sugarfree vanilla syrup. It was decent! The only thing is that it kind of tasted like egg yolk? Maybe it was the combination, but have never had it taste like that before. Took a star off because the total was $9 after additions ($1.50 for a pump of flavored syrup is ridiculous)
Came to Blue Star Donuts' flagship shop without realizing! We came twice: once after finishing up at nearby Washington Park, and one more time the morning we left PDX. Hubs & I didn't realize they also have a location at PDX Airport (lol). I really wish I'd known of Blue Star Donuts prior because apparently they used to have locations in SoCal =') Our first visit was late afternoon and we happened to snag the second-to-last donut of the day (because everything else was sold out already): the Buttermilk Old-Fashioned. Honestly, hubs & I weren't thinking much of this because we don't usually care for old-fashioned...but my goodness, it was DELICIOUS! Hands down, the best old-fashioned donut I've ever had in my life! It was so good that it was part of the reason I came back to buy more before we left Portland! Second time, we got a few to bring home: -Buttermilk Old-Fashioned, again, the best old-fashioned donut ever! I'm so sad just thinking about how we don't have anything like this closer to home... -Lemon Poppy Seed Old Fashioned, was pretty sweet and though the texture was the same as above and still good, I still think the buttermilk was the best. -The O.G. (Orxata Glaze), the sign said horchata and I was immediately excited. This is the classic "O" donut, and the texture was different from the old-fashioned. I thought it was okay....my favorite still being the buttermilk old fashioned. Restrooms available are clean. They also have a parking lot behind the store, though the street to enter has construction/road closure one way, so you may have to circled around. read more
Came in on a weekday afternoon and they still had all the flavors, although my friends had gone other times and did not. I couldn't resist so got 4 donuts to myself, one of each version of donut they have. I also asked how well they last after a day. OG: horchata glaze has a slightly floral taste to me. Regular brioche yeast donut. Good simple template. Got stale after a day. Lychee milk tea creme brulee: same yeast but filled. Excellent cream and excellent crispy top. After a day, the top does melt and become less crispy. Peach cobbler cake donut: nice flavor. It is pretty oily as other reviews have said. Texture wise, between the density of the brioche vs old fashioned. They hold up the best after a day; in fact, the employee said that she liked it better after a day and I could see why - the oil perhaps keeps it not stale and fades away a little. Chocolate bergamot old fashioned: my favorite. Just the way I like my old fashioned as crisp fried exterior with an indulgent dense interior. More dense than the cake donuts. The flavor was deep but not too sweet with a glaze. After a day, it wasn't stale but the crispiness faded. They do TGTG and I would totally do this if I lived in Portland. read more

Walked right in on a Saturday morning on our way out of town. Ordered an OG, a chocolate bergamot old fashioned and a honey lavender - they were all delicious! There were so many great flavors I'd love to try again. The service was great, and I appreciated that each donut was nestled in a wrap for easy grabbing on the go. The coffee was steaming hot and very good too. There was plenty of seating inside. Parking can be challenging so my husband circled the block while I went in and picked me up. read more

I don't really eat donuts too much these days, however, in my return trip to Portland after almost 9 years I had to make a trip to Blue Star...in fact, I walked 30 min in the rain (willingly) to savor these little bad boys! So many great options to choose from! Service was quick and easy though I know it can get busy at times and they do sell out of some of their options if you wait to late to go in. tl;dr the delicious donuts at this Portland-based bakery are worth the pretty penny -- surprisingly, the funnel cake-esque old-fashioned variety outdoes even the signature brioche Los Angeles is the city of a thousand donut shops, many of which are decades-old mom-and-pop stores. As such, it almost feels sacrilegious to hail a non-native, new-wave donutery like Portland's Blue Star Donuts. This brioche specialist touts its locally sourced ingredients and 18-hour dough recipe. Blue Star's California expansion has, unfortunately, halted, but the brand remains one of the premier Portland bakeries. The Jefferson flagship storefront sports a rainbow of blue stripes. Enter into the bakery room, where each donut variety is gingerly positioned upon its own porcelain platter. A white-on-blue donut-themed mural pops against the otherwise minimalist decor, and trendy electronic music echoes around the walls. Unlike the other typically grab-and-go locations, the flagship invites customers to stick around. The adjacent dining room to the right is outfitted with an enormous communal table, and a bar counter winds along the ceiling-high windows across the entire length of the duplex. Across multiple visits to multiple Blue Star locations (including the new PDX airport outpost and California's now-shuttered Venice location), the highlights have been the old-fashioned donuts. These buttery rings fall somewhere on the spectrum between cake donut and funnel cake, and the rich base alone would be worth a visit -- the toppings are (quite literally) icing on the cake. The slightly sweet brioche donuts are good but not overtly premium or noteworthy. My favorite donut has the special-edition Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street? -- a cohesive and complex sesame buttermilk old-fashioned decked with a yuzu glaze. But the fall-themed Pumpkin Pecan Old Fashioned, which reminded me of sophisticated maple donut, was no slouch, either. Other, non-old-fashioned hits were the creamy, dynamically flavorful Lemon & Lime Curd powdered sugar brioche and the olive oil cake-esque Orange Olive Oil cake donut. I was least impressed by The O.G. (Orxata Glaze) and the signature Blueberry Bourbon Basil: the former tasted little different than a standard glazed ring, while the latter recalled a premium blueberry jam but forgot the bourbon and basil. During each visit, I have been surprised to find multiple flavors out of stock. Otherwise, service has always been friendly, efficient, and generous (at end of day, I was even offered donuts on the house). The donuts sell for an eyebrow-raising price of $4-6. This would reasonably feel like highway robbery for the varieties, but I could see myself paying double for the show-stopping old-fashioneds. read more

The donuts were a bit dense, I prefer light and airy ones, so I wasn't a huge fan. My favorite of the bunch was definitely the old fashioned. The quality and taste of their donuts are unmatched. I first visited BSD about 7 years ago in the DTPDX location and remembered how good their donuts were, FF 7 years later, they are still awesome. I picked the powdered orange donut because it sounded interesting and I was in awe. I don't think this flavor is part of their staples and could've been a specialty of the day. Tried some donuts with my boyfriend, we got a variety of sweet and savory. The chocolate old fashioned was definitely my favorite, even as someone who usually doesn't like old fashions. Apple fritter was pretty good, the other 2 donuts weren't anything special. Donuts are about $5/$6 each, fair warning I guess. Service is very quick, establishment was clean. read more

Honestly I didn't get the hype. I saw many videos suggesting to try blue star when visiting Portland. I felt like it could be some local nostalgia or something. Didn't find any speciality in the donut. I tried the OG donut as suggested by the person in the store. It has a bit of a decent flavor but way too over sweet. $5 for a donut, there has to be something special about it. It's just a regular donut for me. On a recent overnight trip to Portland, Oregon it struck me that a return visit to Blue Star Donuts should be in order. I haven't been to this location before but I have been to another location in the past. The donuts at Blue Star Donuts I read once are donuts for adults. And what that means is while still sweet they don't have what some would describe an overload of sugar. And the flavor options for the donuts may not be quite what kids would instantly like. On my visit here I got a Maple Glazed raised donut as well as an Orange Olive Oil donut. It would be easy to say that the Maple Glazed would be the more accessible one for kids if I were to compare. It's sweet , Maple frosting would be something almost anybody could enjoy. The Orange Olive Oil donut was good but was pretty intense. It was in my mind a fairly dense cake donut with a very strong presence of Orange. It was very unique and I managed to eat all if it but it crossed my mind that maybe I should have taken some if it home. To drink I had a mocha and between that and the orange cake donut I left more than a little full. My experience with the Orange donut might sound like I am leading up to complaining but it isn't. I perhaps should have regulated myself more during this donut session. At this point on favorite donuts from Blue Star so far it's the Matcha Crumble donut on my first experience with the company and that Maple one I had on my last visit was excellent as well! I did have my eye out for the Matcha one on my second visit and in fact the selection between my first visit and my most recent one the selection didn't seem all that familiar which I can appreciate as I always love trying something new and unique which Blue Star does quite well! read more

There is limited parking at the back of the store. What I got: Raspberry Rosemary Old-Fashioned: the raspberry flavor is light, but I really enjoyed the crispy shell of the donut. It is oily, but I preferred this because it didn't feel as dense as the matcha crumble I've had from here. There are seats outside and inside, but it was very empty the morning I went. There were only two other customers who came in after us. There was also what I assume human feces on the sidewalk outside the store front, which was off-putting, but I guess that's Portland. Make sure you don't leave any valuables in the car. read more
