While visiting my husband's hometown in Ridgewood, New York, he took me to this incredible Italian restaurant and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The place was spotless with such a warm, inviting atmosphere. I ordered the spaghetti puttanesca and he had the chicken parm, and both dishes were absolutely A+. Although the food was very good, the service was very good, the restaurant left a bad taste in my mouth. We went for Dinner tonight - Friday night, first time here, had reservations for 4 at 6 pm , (prime time) the restaurant was half full. There were still a few empty tables when we left around 7:15ish. It was never "packed" considering it's a Friday night . We enjoyed the food so we Asked about the possibility of making a reservation for 20 people (a wedding rehearsal dinner ) on a Thursday night in September at around 6:15pm and was told we don't do that , we have our "regulars" . We were a bit shocked that they won't take a dinner reservation for a Thursday night, for 20 people, A guaranteed minimum of $1500 for a few hours. Because of their regulars? (Figured an average of $1500 ( if not more) because We dropped $300 for 4 people tonight) . We're not asking to take over the whole place, A long table along one wall is all we would have needed. A very simple set menu so that there would not be 20 different orders all at once. What's the difference : 20 people at one long table or 20 people eating in the restaurant at once... I would think a family style set menu would be fairly easy... I do that all by myself for the holidays.... They have plenty of servers that are very capable. I can't imagine a Thursday being a problem if a Friday night wasn't packed. No problem.... there are plenty of other restaurants that surely will accommodate . I was recently staying in the area and didn't want to venture too far for dinner one night so I walked over to this spot and was pleasantly surprised. Everyone working here was super friendly and it really gave off a welcoming energy. The interior is well done and nice enough for a date, but casual enough if you're looking to just grab dinner by yourself. I started with an order of the calamari which came out fast, hot and crispy. Super traditional presentation done right with a side of tomato sauce and a lemon wedge. For my main, I ordered the Chicken Francese which is always one of my favorites. It came with two nice-sized portions of chicken and a side of spaghetti. The chicken was tender and the lemon sauce was really solid. I do wish the spaghetti came in the same lemon sauce instead of tomato sauce though. I would probably ask for that next time as tomato vs. lemon sauce don't work side by side for me. Overall a nice spot that seems to care about the food they're putting out. Great find in this awesome little neighborhood. read more

This restaurant has a classic Italian trattoria feel with a rustic wood trim, classic mural and great decoration. They had great ambiance for dates, dinners with friends, or even solo. The food was some of the best Italian food I've had in NYC. I had the the lamb Ragu special, pictured below, and was blown away by the flavor and the freshly and perfectly cooked pasta. The calamari tasted freshly breaded and cooked; I would honestly even come here and just get a giant plate of it. I also got to try the sardine pasta and will probably order it next time. This was on the cusp of 5 stars FYI. The Caesar salad was very good, well-dressed, quite zesty. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it's definitely very good. The bread they bring is delicious, fresh, crispy on outside, fluffy on inside, and great to mop up dressings, sauce, butter, mud, anything lol. The spaghetti puttanesca SMACKED (translation, also very good). I've actually never had this dish before, and I loved how well-balanced it was. The sauce was smooth, buttery, and acidic from olives/capers. The portion was solid, spaghetti well-cooked. I mopped the plate. I felt that the service was fine, perhaps a tad rushed, inattentivec... they were busy but felt a little jaded. But nothing bad by any means. Maybe I'm just used to overly friendly waiters, and they're not quite that, but that's fine. Who cares how nice your waiters are if your foods bangin! I've eaten from here twice now, and both times have been great! I had the chicken marsala w/ a side of pasta. The chicken was moist and the marsala sauce flavorful! Just enough left over to sop up with some pasta and the nice hearty chunk of bread that came with it. I also tried the fettucine alfredo, which was creamy and delicious. The sauce stuck really nicely, coating the pasta, instead of it just sitting in liquid like a lot of other alfredo's i've ordered for delivery. Their chicken parm sandwich was on great bread, and cooked well, but I did find it needed more cheese and was a bit bland. But overall will definitely be a repeat customer! read more

Saw some great reviews & the photos looked awesome...BUT... our experience was pretty unappealing. (For the express version, skip to the veal dish) Let me break it down. We got seated pretty quickly as it was about 5:45pm & empty. To start, we ordered 3 cups of ice with a splash of ginger ale & lemons. (Served in wine glasses or something similar-2 sips & it was gone) Appetizers: Fried Mozzarella; AKA-Grilled cheese with mozzarella, fried & served with sauce. It didn't taste bad, however, it came out luke warm so we weren't impressed. The sauce was sweet, not bad. Meatballs: 6 mini meatballs which were actually microwaved longer than the grilled cheese & very tasty. Definitely enjoyed those! Entrees: Chicken Special: Fried & breaded chicken breast stuffed with ham & cheese in a brown sauce (similar to marsala) with truffle oil. It was good, but a small portion. Spaghetti Carbonara: Really tasty. No complaints. Veal Cordon Bleu: Wish I knew what it tasted like, but the server brought it to the table next to us so he could try it before me. The older gentleman (who had a beard) hovered over the dish, looked at it, put his hands on it & then they realized it was the wrong dish. The server removed it from the table & walked straight over to bring it in front of me as it was my turn to try it, but I refused. As a server with 8 year experience...you could've at least played it off & brought it in the kitchen then back to me even though I'd know what's up! Sooo...definitely gross & ruined the experience for all 3 of us. Wish I had better things to say as we had higher expectations. Will not be back, but was worth the try! We were feeling a bit nostalgia for this place as we haven't been here in about 10 years. Came for lunch (they open at 2) and just barely got a table because there was a party and the place was 80% filled with that. This of course made the small place rather loud. Service was a bit lacking due to the party but all the servers seemed to be hustling and working together and were friendly. We were disappointed they seem to no longer do the olive oil dip with the bread basket. Small prepackaged butter in it's place. The fried mozzarella was good but not as good as I remember maybe a bit smaller and was served luke warm same with the marinara. The veal dishes francese and marsala were both very good but maybe could have used a bit more sauce. The tartuffo dessert was lack luster but was priced fairly. read more

Hidden along Fresh Pond Road is Antica Trattoria, an Italian restaurant that truly caters to the locals and seems to be taken for granted by them. Walking off the M train, it's a quick two block walk to a not so welcoming entrance. At first glance it looks far too casual to be a legitimate restaurant but it actually is! Walking past the cashier, you see dining tables set up with very modest décor that tries its best to whisk you away to Italia while still being in Ridgewood. I came here with my boyfriend and his family for his mother's birthday. We made a reservation for 6:30pm for 7 people and not all of us showed up on time but my first impression of customer service was great as they were patient and seated us regardless whether the whole party was here. However, the restaurant is fairly small with no more than 8-9 tables total so it wouldn't of been a problem to begin with. It was also fairly quiet and not very crowded. As we started off with drinks, the customer service began to taper off throughout our meal and wasn't as strong as it was when we initially came in. They had some wine and soft drinks though I can't recall if they have anything more than that. The menu itself was divided into fish, chicken, meat, salad pasta and appetizer sections with a lot of seemingly endless pasta options! Someone in our party insisted on ordered calamari and something else that pleasantly surprised me: a fried, grilled cheese sandwich with mozzarella and tomato sauce. The initial appearance did not look appetizing at all but it tasted amazing!! Think of this as the cooler, young cousin of the mozzarella stick. It was surprising they had such a fun item on their menu given the initial look of the menu itself and location of the restaurant which, to my knowledge, isn't an area known for restaurants that have fun foods on their menus. This was honestly delicious and loved by the entire table. For mains, most people leaned towards pasta, shrimp and pizza. However those who wanted pizza that night were out of luck as the oven was not working. It was not the end of the world but given the amount of options on the menu it took some people a moment to think of Plan B. Some people were boring and had one slab of veal on their plate - or was it the restaurant who chose to keep it a little too simple? - and I was basic and had penne alla vodka which was honestly the sweetest vodka sauce I had in awhile; it was different that most of the sauces I had ever tasted. Meanwhile, the boyfriend had the gamberoni scampi: jumbo shrimp sliced in half with garlic in a lemon and white wine sauce. The presentation looked nice and it tasted nice and light but it wasn't worth the $20 price tag. To be fair though everything else on the menu was reasonably priced. Towards the end we all looked at the dessert menu and I was happy to see all the desserts across the board were listed as $5 each (actually, they're $6 each - fix that menu, Antica!). Since it was his mother's birthday, was insisted on a cake with a candle (she hates making a scene out of her birthday) but little did we know this restaurant actually busts out a whole theatrical performance! When the cake was ready, suddenly the lights dimmed, color lights flashed and music blasted and a few servers sang happy birthday. My boyfriend's mom was mortified but the rest of us were blown away; kind of like when one of your quietest friends decides to get loud and jump on top of a table - you just don't expect it! Overall, this was place had a couple of nice surprises, the food was good but not great and the service was just okay. I'm almost never here but if someone wanted Italian in the Ridgewood area, I'd tell them to check out Antica if they wanted to. read more
