Wonderful coffee and wonderful people! This is my neighborhood coffee shop, but even if I lived miles away I would still make a habit of visiting every single day. The baristas are amiable, attentive, and kind! The sandwiches and pastries, while very pricey, are delicious, unique, and flavorful! Items such as sandwiches and breakfast burritos change seasonally. Order a vegan burrito and be sure to grab extra salsas- they're amazing! You have to try their nitro iced coffee, as well! Cockroach story: Went in to read and work on a few things. Ended up staying late and huge cockroach literally crawled on my back and arm. I noticed it and flicked it at another customer inadvertently. It crawled on my bag and I had to dump it just to make sure it wasnt in there. I startled everyone near the bench I sat on. Everyone was on edge since we didn't know where it went. Anyways, I moved, and finished my book. Saw it sitting on the wall before I left, so I went to tell the guy behind the counter. This place seems to be popular for afternoon to late night. Just a heads up parking lot sucks, it's shared with a convenience store. I came here for some tea while waiting for a friend one night. While I was people watching, there were groups, some ppl reading or studying by their self. They offer tea, some local baked good. Also the fridge had local home made juice, sandwiches. I really liked their hot tea selection. Unique flavors. I had a hot green tea infused with blueberries. It's a run down spot. Random vintage decor. They have a patio, looks like someone's backyard. The good dog food truck parks in front of it. While I was waiting for my food, i noticed customers bought beer & just chilled on the patio area. I ordered their ice tea. They have simple syrup at the tea station. I find that awesome, since I'm not a fan of drinking granulated sugar because it doesn't dissolve that well. Antidote is cool little shop, a good place for a Saturday morning. I'm not sure if they are at all affiliated, but they have a lot of the same stuff Black Hole Coffee House does. They get the beans from the same place it seems, and there are a lot of the same foods - salads and sandwiches - here, not to mention they both sell Black Hole cold brew. The shop is pretty well lit and features colors that are easy on the eyes. It's not overly modern or hipster, just overall really welcoming and unintimidating. The whole front of the place is more or less a big window, and this lets in a lot of nice natural light that keeps the mood light. The music they were playing when I was there was pretty light-hearted and welcoming as well, something of a mix between Peter Gabriel and African tribal music (think Lion King) - pretty cool. (Update: It was Paul Simon's "Graceland", which makes sense) The coffee I got was the "Viva La Feminista", it's a pretty solid one, but something I had already tried at Black Hole so not much of a surprise factor there. There's lot of seating: comfy couches, chairs, tables, a nice outdoor patio area that's decently shaded, and free Wifi. They also don't have a minimum on credit card purchases which is nice. Antidote is a pretty cool place. Nothing too fancy, and it has a bit of a nostalgia factor for me (I've only been here once, but somehow the color scheme and natural lighting is kind of childish and nostalgic - in a good way). As of now I haven't tried a whole bunch of things, so I hope to add to this later, but I will definitely come back next time I'm in the area. read more

When the seating is open (indoor seating currently closed for pandemic) it is a chill eclectic vibe. Random assortment of vintage furniture and art in the walls. New favorite coffee shop! My husband and I just moved to this area a few months ago and have been wanting to stop by Antidote. A rainy, cold Saturday morning was the perfect time to try! We walked in and were immediately greeted by smiling staff and felt at ease ordering and not rushed like most coffee shops. I got the Cajetta Latte and he chose the bottomless dark roast coffee. The seating was full but we sat outside for a few minutes until some chairs inside became open. We snagged it up along with our coffee and sat for 30 mins relaxing and taking it all in. The decor is very nostalgic for me and reminds me of my grandmothers house. I felt at home. We had a few more cups of coffee and decided to head out as they were getting packed. The latte was amazing and I have a feeling I'll be back to this coffee shop 2-3 times a week! Parking is limited but we parked down the street and walked. 10/10 would recommend!! read more

Decent place, but the young girl barista with long brown hair and a goth look needs a friendlier demeanor when dealing with customers. I went back up for a second drink, and she did not acknowledge me at all. Her coworker, who is the obvious nice one, took care of me. Then to show her rudeness even more, she was in an obvious rush to get customers to leave before it is even closing time. Turned off all the lights while I was sitting outside so I can't see my computer. Rushing other customers out the door by banging stuff around while cleaning to make it obvious "Hey, I want to get out of here." I am not a coffee person, however, every once in awhile I come here for their Cajetta Latte. It's not too sweet and not too overpowering like regular coffees and the taste is so unique because of the Mexican caramel in it. Warning: each barista makes it differently, so there is no consistency. That's probably the only issue I've found. But when one of the girls nail it - it's perfection! My friend lives around the corner so we were going to walk hear but typical Houston weather has us driving. There is little to no parking at this place and it's literally smudged next to a convenience store. There's plenty of parking on the street! Two words to describe this place would be cute and cozy. Although it is fairly small the decor is to die for. If you want a lot of elbow room however this is not the spot to go to but I can personally manage. The charger plugs are under the chairs which is annoying I had to crawl under to plug in my laptop. Finally my drink cup just wasn't aesthetically pleasing. I'm a big fan of Antidote. Many yelp reviews have been written within those walls with a cajeta latte beside me. Cajeta is traditionally made with goats milk. Cows milk is most often used in Dulce de Leche. This is the process in which the milk is reduced while stirring vigorously over a low heat. I often find dulce de leche a little too sweet. Cajeta on the other hand is more complicated, sharper and just right amount of sweetness. Anyhow, the decor is perfect for the neighborhood. Furniture has been procured at your local Salvation Army or on the streets of Houston. I've often wondered what happens to the furniture I put out on the curb after cleaning out my grandparents garage. It's usually gone within a couple of hours. It gets picked by locals, and then sold to Heights coffee shops. It can get a little crowded and the layout is a bit confusing. Get there early for a place to sit and a plug, because they go quick. They also have beer and wine and a nice selection of teas. So with beer and wine comes decent Happy Hour from 4-7pm. read more

Antidote Coffee is a lovely piece of the overall puzzle that the Houston Heights is. Occupying the far-left end of the mini-strip center with Kaboom Books in the middle and a convenience store on the right hand, all three are victims of their own success. Parking is at a premium whether you are visiting any of these venues - feel free to park on East 8th to avoid the aggravation. Being a guest of Friday's Yelp Office Hours, I thought I was the first to arrive. Ako E and Alex R had each been there but managed to hide from me as well as each other - which is no mean feat given that Antidote is not a big place at all. By the time I left, at least 20 Yelpers had stopped by - a great turnout. Inside, the décor could be described as revamped industrial chic with Clinton-era bohemia. Yes, that description is messed up but "traditional coffeehouse" will work, too. The positioning of the various tables and chairs maximize available space and minimizes privacy; I'd wager that no more than 16 people could fit inside if they occupied every table. Most of the tables are two-person with one or two 4-person tables. There is a long fabric bench in the middle of the room but your conversation would be more of the side-saddle version than a face-to-face one. Unless you count face-to-face with someone at another table. Outside, there is a graveled side patio which is as large as the inside seating area. Sprinkled with metal chairs, tables, and umbrellas for shade, this made for a more conducive area for mixing in easy conversation with fellow Yelpers. The presence and operation of a large industrial fan was welcome on a very balmy July evening. Antidote has a happy hour special running from 4 PM to 7 PM on various beers and wine. I opted for an iced small cajeta latte ($3.00), which was made using goat milk and Mexican caramel. Sort of different-but-the-same in terms of lattes but refreshingly good on a hot day. I liked the differing notes that the goat milk provided and the delectability of the caramel over ice. The barista was a pleasant guy who didn't flinch after I realized that I hadn't specified an iced beverage and asked if he could pour my hot drink over ice. He went through the trouble of remaking the whole beverage from the beginning, which while unnecessary for a low-maintenance customer like me, was observed and appreciated by me. Kudos to him! So, rather than puzzle over where to go for your traditional coffeehouse fix, just stop in here and enjoy it whether or not you live in the neighborhood. read more

Antidote is a perfect chameleon pick-me-up spot. That's my new term for a coffee house that serves many types of things. There aren't many places to which I could affix the chameleon adjective truthfully (and in conjunction with pick-me-up spot), but glory be that one such place exists in Houston. Fine, I'll explain. Here's how it's MY chameleon: When I was a coffee drinker, this was a great spot to pop in (dependent on parking situation) and grab a soy, iced, or hot latte. That was my coffee drink of choice, primarily because the milk and coffee and two to three shots of espresso were uniform throughout. Also, the same reasons I DON'T drink coffee anymore, espresso shots. Imagine someone going through the tail end of a cocaine high, and you get the idea; replete with grinding my back teeth. They have a great selection of wine and beer, for those of you who like to study or work from home "on the edge." Speaking of setting and activity, it is a great place to: pick up tea/coffee/snack to go, plan a prom for adults, take over a patio with about thirty others, read, gossip, play a board game, plan your next heist. Or study or "work from home." Back to my "coffee quitter" ways, I've become a tea snob. No paper filters for this kitten; they leave a weird aftertaste. So many pick-me-up spots only offer Tazo or Revolution Tea. $2 for a bag $0.20 tea bag that I put in a coffee mug? Yeesh. Antidote breaks that shell of typical wide open. They have about twenty types of loose tea from which to choose. You can smell them in advance, and they serve the tea in a teapot...on a tray. I mixed Earl Grey and some sort of herbal detoxifying root-type tea. Awesome. Really, there is a finite number of times I can go to Te House of Tea and Path of Tea. Oh, the aging pseudo-hippies at Path of Tea. As I've never eaten the sandwiches, I'll only mention the cookies and snacky desserts. If I forget to slap my hand as punishment for ogling the sweets, I sometimes wind up with one of their fabulous cookies. Then again, in case you were unaware, all snacky desserts eaten while driving, lose their fat content. They are fat free. Never read that loop hole in your manual? Well, now you know. read more

After inhaling the noxious fumes of everyday life - literally on the freeways and figuratively in the office - Antidote is the cure. An austere, loft-like interior with concrete floors, exposed brick walls and HVAC ducts stands in marked contrast to the colorful photography and paintings by local artists which adorn the walls. Perhaps because of this spare aesthetic the friendliness of the staff is set off in heightened bas relief. Ask about any of the fresh teas and pastries, or anything on the menu and you'll get a quick smile and a knowledgeable answer. Inside is generally quiet, with individual tables dominating the layout, often with people reading or working on their own. But some vintage furniture and sofas, and one of the most comfortable couches around (perhaps bequeathed by the Brady's), often seat groups cheerfully chatting away. The patio on the side and tables out front are more social, and neighborhood families with kids in tow often gather in the evening. I've also seen a couple of open mic nights. From 4-7 enjoy happy hour prices like $1 shots of espresso or specials on beer, and the sandwiches are serious business - personal fave is the "roast beast" with brie. Or, if it's too hot outside to even think about a traditional coffee, try the "cajeta" - an iced Mexican latte made with goat's milk and caramel. Deliciosa. Hell to the yes. I came here after looking at Danielle S' wi-fi list, and this being the top pick, figured I'd go and check it out. So glad I did! I have to completely agree with Farrah that the staff is the nicest you will find at any coffee shop in H-town. I was beginning to think that in order to work at these Coffee shops you had to be either hipster, emo, bohemian elitist, aloof or all of the above. The atmosphere is most pleasant and relaxing. Nearly ceiling to floor windows opens the place up and adds to the down to earth feel of it all. The furniture is simple and mid-century modern. Lots of two person tables so you don't take up too much room if you are solo. I noticed they had plenty of games for those who wanted to partake. I got a mocha latte with almond milk. Kudos to them for even having almond milk, because I personally think soy milk tastes like ass. There was also a nice seating area outside, in fact all of the seating in this place is very welcoming. I took a pic of Antidote's patio on my phone and now use it frequently as wallpaper. Why you might ask??? Because it reminds me of a place that is truly the combination of all things good about small coffee shops that are not Starbucks. Now I like my triple, nonfat, caramel lattes just as much as the next "Buckaholic" but I prefer a place that feels more like home. Antidote is is easy to find, quaint and inviting. Although the indoor area fills up quickly the patio is my haven. I love outdoor areas and this is one patio where you can get in some serious people watching time. Not only is the environment conducive to relaxation but the prices are cheap and the caffeine is on point. While sitting outside they make sure to try and keep you as chilled as possible in the Texas sun with oscillating fans and shade provided by foliage and umbrellas. The only downside is probably the comfort of the chairs on the patio, but I can over look that. Did I mention they sell beer? Just another reason for me to visit again! read more

This place is a little cramped for my taste. The tables running against the far, prison-wall is a strange set up. It feels like you walked into a chess tournament in an insane asylum. Come to think of it, I kind of dig it. Very 12 Monkeys. I'm not a coffee drinker, so coffee shops to me serve different purposes perhaps. Sometimes I want something warm, as was the case today. Chocolate was my poison. Very watery here, but I'm used to the indignity. The chocolate was at least warm, but I'll go with tea next time. One friend conversation is generally my quota at a coffee shop. This place wouldn't fit the bill on that score. I no longer have to be frustrated by my lack of options as a non-coffee drinker. I didn't even bother checking out their selection for a good half hour or so since I assume that all they had was coffee, tea, and the worst--chai tea. When I went up there, I was pleasantly surprised to see a nice fridge full of beer and with quite a selection. After I got my beverage of choice (umm, it was 4:30 so don't judge me!), the baristas pointed to their sign showing that M-F they have $2 Shiners (which includes the specialty Shiners that Antidote carries) which made me happy. After my beer, I figured that I needed to get something else. Antidote is exactly what I have been looking for in Houston. It's what a coffee shop is meant to be. No loud and obnoxious music, unique furniture and art, great tasting (and priced) selections of coffee and tea, not to mention their options for snacking. The side patio is HUGE! At first I pulled up and thought that the three tables in front were it, then we turned the corner. I couldn't believe how many places there were to sit, and even better how many of them were big sturdy tables. I got the luxury solid metal back rocker chair so I was comfortable. My husband and his friend both were complaining about their backs hurting because they got the older metal mesh looking types. The barista was really nice. I hate going to coffee places that have rude, rushed and inconsiderate baristas. The bathrooms are a bit confusing. They are unisex, which is cool. They are also really old. Still have old sinks and fixtures, even the trash can is rusty and looks like it's from the 50's. I was confused because the guy in there before me totally turned off the light so I didn't know that it was behind a curtain next to the water heater. This place is a bit far from my house but I know that if I need a great place for studying I will probably make the trek out here. And don't think you can't come here to just chill. Two words, Almond Milk. Yes, vegan-people and anyone who's health-conscious, you can have non-dairy latte here! They have soy milk too, but to me, almond milk is soooo much tastier :) I'm not a fan of second-hand furnitures, but this place is special. It reminds me of college, except that you can eat, drink, and have a conversation here. This is a perfect place to be by yourself. Just bring your laptop, a book, or papers. Many people mentioned the quality of the coffee, tea, and the food. But what sets this place apart from millions of other coffee shops is the vibe from the staffs and the clientele. Coffee shops, they're my little excuse to get out of my house. I was apprehensive about going here because I thought maybe the baristas would be like rude or snobby, but no, totally the opposite. I brought my little baby girl and one of the baristas said that she loved babies. How sweet for me. She couldn't have been nicer. Then I saw it on the counter... Pistachio cupcake, where have you been all my life?!! Oh my, it was like heaven in my mouth. I also tried the cajeta coffee drink hot (I can't remember the exact name). It was different, the goat milk was a bit strong for my taste. I had been dying to go back to try the Antidote. When I did, I tried it on ice and it was fan-freakin'-tastic. Really excellent coffee. I also have to comment on the cool bathroom that's bringin unisexy back. I am a lover of bathrooms where people actually put some thought into it and don't just toss a dirty toilet in it along with a roll of paper towels and maybe hose it down once a year. This bathroom was carefully thought out and has really cool tiles with cute girls, and words like YUMMY on them. It's orange and has a high sink and...a clean toilet of course.
