Playa Azul -- Where Food Meets Genuine Human Connection As…read moresoon as we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and friendliness by Mauricio while we bobbed our heads to Hall and Oates' "Maneater" playing in the background -- followed by "Funky Little Beat" by Connie. We knew immediately this was our vibe. We sat down and read through the menu. A lot of dishes I wasn't familiar with, so naturally I defaulted to what I knew -- quesadilla de camarón. My wife did the smart thing and asked for recommendations. Mauricio suggested three dishes and she chose the last one- I think it was because something about tequila . When it was my turn, I proudly placed my order. Without missing a beat, Mauricio looked at me and said, "Bro, you can get that anywhere -- you should try this." He began describing the dish, then pointed to his dad sitting patiently at a corner table. "That's his invention." No more words needed. I said sold. Our dishes arrived and we immediately moved them to the center of the table so we could share both. I had the seafood fajitas -- shrimp, fish, fajita vegetables, and the most tender, flavorful pulpo I've ever had. All the seafood was cooked perfectly: tender but not falling apart. But the octopus and the sauce were something special. Chef Jose came to check on us and I told him about the pulpo. His eyes lit up as he began describing his preparation process -- then he said, "You want to see?" He walked me right into his kitchen and showed me the octopus being prepared. That moment alone was worth the visit. By the time we returned to our table, the restaurant had started to fill up. We continued enjoying our food, including the handmade soft tortillas that came with my dish -- don't sleep on those. Chef Jose stopped by again, sharing more stories, more passion, more of himself. Before we even finished eating, we were already planning our next visit for happy hour and dinner with the family. This is a perfect example of what Will Guidara calls Unreasonable Hospitality -- unexpected, personalized, and genuinely human. Mauricio and Chef Jose aren't just running a restaurant. They're sharing something they love, and you feel it in every bite and every interaction. Thank you, Mauricio and Jose. We'll be back.

The Fajitas de Mariscos came with tons of seafood in a savory sauce. It came with rice w/corn and beans. We also had the Camarones Costa Azul which was jumbo shrimp wrapped with bacon in a savory tomato sauce + cheese. Definitely a heavy dish but pretty tasty! I really liked the homemade tortillas here; they were so soft and went well with the shrimp and fajitas. Prices are in the higher end but portions are also huge! There seemed to be just a husband and wife when we dined. They were very welcoming and helpful with explaining the menu. Place was very spacious with lots of seating.

I was honestly amazed by the new vibe and atmosphere. They've made it into a really nice place to sit down, relax, and enjoy your food. We were originally planning to just get takeout, but after seeing the new setup, we decided to stay and have dinner there. We ordered the grilled chicken tacos with everything and Jarritos, which was a great combo. Both of my kids and I really enjoyed the food! The staff were friendly and the service was great. My only small complaint is that their phone line gets really busy. I was trying to order ahead and had to call several times because it would say the line was busy and hang up. Overall, great experience and a huge improvement from the last time I visited. We'll definitely be back!

I gave up and opted for a plain cheese quesadilla instead just to end the interaction. We also ordered the Hot Cheeto burrito. When the food arrived, there was no sauce or salsa included on the side and after looking around the entire dining area, there wasn't a salsa bar or a single bottle to grab anywhere. Serving dry quesadillas and heavy burritos without salsa is sad. Honestly, Taco Bell tastes better and at least gives you sauce. Completely disappointing experience, and we won't be coming back.

Next time, I'll have to order some salsa for my main dish since I forgot to ask since I do like some heat on my dish. Besides that, I'd come back here again. Alambre & Chimichangas perfectly cooked

I can't say enough good things about the staff that took care of us. Jessica, Pepe, and the manager Luis ensured that our event ran smoothly. Jessica took care of our drink orders and Pepe made sure the food Buffett was regularly replenished. Both of them constantly cleaned up around the cocktail tables, ensuring that the area stayed presentable throughout the event. The Mexican always has great pricing on drinks so the guests enjoyed a variety of them. The food was delish and everything served was not only pretty to look at but also tasty. They also let us use their mic and speaker system, which I think is a plus. All in all we loved having our event at the Mexican and would recommend this venue to anyone wanting to host an intimate event.

We have been loyal regulars here for a long time, coming at least once a week. Honestly, the main reason I kept coming back and always tipped well, even when the staff was sometimes just whatever, is because the guy who owns it is always so nice, friendly, and works incredibly hard. Unfortunately, his wife handled things tonight, and the service was absolutely horrible. We ordered a steak burrito, and let me tell you, the meat was completely inedible. It was just pure gristle in every single bite, to the point where we couldn't even chew it and only ate about a fourth of it. They also forgot to give us salsa with our chips. When we called to let them know about the meat, his wife started chopping up meat on her end, arguing with me, and insisting the food was perfectly fine and fresh. My wife, who is visibly 8 months pregnant, actually walked the burrito back into the restaurant just to show her the gristle. Because the lady said to bring it back show her. Instead of making it right or offering a simple switch for a chicken burrito like my wife had asked, she completely lacked empathy and flat-out said, "I can't remake your burrito." I called back to ask what could be done to fix this, and she started telling me to stop yelling at her. I wasn't yelling at all, my other baby was screaming in the background because my wife left the house to try and get the food fixed. She then hung up the phone on me. Apparently, she told my wife she even consulted her husband before refusing to fix it. It is so unfortunate that a business we supported weekly would treat regulars this way, but they have officially lost customers for life. The owner also said she was going to reply to me on here. Waiting for an explanation of how you turned away an 8 month pregnant lady?

I've had this place bookmarked for a year now, and I went there yesterday at 10am to get some food to go. I was greeted by a lady there. She was friendly and complimented my dress. I got a Carne Asada Taco, Al Pastor Taco, and a Gringa. I asked if they had chips and salsa, but she said they do have salsa but no chips. That's different. I've never been to a Mexican spot that didn't have chips. The place looked clean and vibrant. There were plenty of parking in the plaza. There were plenty of seating as well. Maybe it was still early so no customers were there when I was there. After waiting for about 5 mins, she brought me my bag of food. She complimented my look and bid a good day. So sweet & nice! I enjoyed the food when I got home. Everything was very yummy! The meats along with the veggies were all super tasty. The green salsa had a nice kick to it. The cucumber (?) slices were refreshing. I think I found a new fave Mexican spot! Just need to get some chips from a store! Lol :)

Years past, we were on the quest to try all of their locations and this one won our unofficial rating scale in various areas. Food was always great, large portions, reasonable prices and above all friendly service. Then I stopped coming here....COVID, life....and here we are again. We were going to throw a surprise birthday party and we needed a central location that was able to accommodate a group our size. I went weeks prior to see if this was going to be possible since I remembered that they had a large room in the back for semi to private events. I had also used the area in the past for lunch meetings but wanted to make sure that the space was still available. I spoke with Nico and from the start the ease in organizing a surprise birthday lunch was easy. He told me the different options available in hosting a buffet style type of lunch or having guests select choices from a pre-determined menu. Once you let him know your selection of items for the select choices, he will type it up for you to have it ready for your guests. He didn't tell me that I needed to do this, but I opted in making my own menu document since I wanted to make it personalized, use color and also have the selections in English and Spanish to accommodate our guests. Their menu is so ample and they have a lot of choices and many non-meat and meat selections. I personally am partial to the Super Famoso Burrito (Wet), its my go to and the one that I almost always get when ordering. Nico was quickly available via text during the process to answer any questions. The day of the party, he was there and when I entered the restaurant with the birthday man, he knew what to do. Our invited guests were already waiting in the back room with the curtain drawn. I didn't have to tell Nico that we were there for the surprise party. Nothing was ruined. He led us to the back for us to be seated and surprised our birthday man was!! Staff was excellent, super friendly and professional, helping to serve all of our needs. Parking can get a little tricky depending on the time and day if you want to park right in front. There is plenty available but because the restaurant is in a strip shopping center, the surrounding shops are also busy too but you will find parking. Our guests that had never been to La Pinata before commented on how much they liked the food, service and the restaurant itself. I know people from our party will be coming back and I know for sure I will too! Thank you Nico and everyone else for ensuring that the surprise birthday celebration lunch was perfect!

    - Top Shelf Price, but Not a Top Shelf Experience…read more La Piñata Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar 39136 Paseo Padre Pkwy Fremont, CA 94538 Sunday, August 2, 2026 - approximately 2:00 PM I stopped by La Piñata in Fremont this afternoon while I had some time to spare. I figured I would sit down, relax, enjoy a margarita, and possibly order something else while I waited. I ordered the Top Shelf Margarita. It arrived with the standard orange and lime garnish, but overall the drink was just OK. For something advertised as "Top Shelf," I expected more flavor, a smoother drink, and something that actually felt premium. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't memorable either. The chips and salsa were also disappointing. The chips were basic, and the salsa really lacked flavor. There was nothing distinctive, fresh-tasting, spicy, or memorable about it. For a Mexican restaurant, I expect the salsa to be one of those first things that gets your attention, but this one was very plain and underwhelming. The bigger issue, though, was the service. After receiving my margarita, I was ready to order something else. When I tried to get assistance, I was told I needed to wait. I could understand that if the restaurant had been extremely busy, but it really wasn't. That made the interaction feel even more unnecessary. When a customer is sitting there ready to spend more money and place another order, being told to wait without much attentiveness doesn't create a very welcoming experience. At that point, between the average margarita, bland chips and salsa, and the service, I decided I really didn't want to order anything else. yeah I'm beyond with this OK actually Two stars . Nothing was completely terrible, but nothing stood out enough to make me want to return based on this visit. For a restaurant that has been around for years, I expected much better flavor and a much stronger level of service. The ambiance is not what I expected from the Mexican restaurant.
