My wife is a gourmand. She enjoys cooking and fine foods and has a very critical palette. She has worked and dined in quite a few excellent restaurants here and abroad. I was shocked to hear her say that this was the best food she ever had in a restaurant in her life. The waitress was excellent and friendly, ensuring that we were enjoying our dining experience. There were several families, including some with small children. There should be something to appeal to most kids on the menu, and they had a selection for children as well. The food was truly phenomenal and the portions herculean. I could have eaten the croquetes de carne by the dozen and my wife loved the cod croquettes. Be prepared to haul a take-home bag (you will not want to share with the dog...sorry, Mollie); my wife barely dented her Ribaatejana. I managed to finish my Portuguese Steak (steak, ham, fried eggs, ham, rice, and the ubiquitous fries slathered with a delicious brown sauce.) Save room for the rice pudding - the best I've ever had. It's so dense, my wife refers to it as a rice flan. Antonio's sports a bar and there is a fine selection of Portuguese liquors as well as a good selection of more traditional American cordials, wines, and beers. I called for reservations the day before, but the hostess forgot. There was a line - a long one - but she made it right. I do recommend calling a day in advance - and I suppose a little reminder around noon or so wouldn't be a bad idea. Even though there was a steady stream of people in line, it seemed to move fairly quickly; unless you are herding a crew of hungry littles, the wait seemed to be reasonable....especially considering the quality of the meal. This place is phenomenol. If you are driving to Cape Cod or Boston or whatever, stop by and get soem of this amazing Portuguese style seafood. This is honestly the best seafood I have tasted in my whole life. We ordered the cod fish cakes (yum), lobster croquettes, mahi, grilled sword fish, kids had fish and chips. But everything coming out of the kitchen looked sooo tasty. And people in the restaurant looked completely satisfied. Service was great too, very hospitable. Comfortable, homey atmosphere (don't let the outside fool you), great food, decently priced (though not cheap, by any means). My husband and I shared a bowl of clam chowder, and the baked (broiled?) scrod/scallops/shrimp dish with potatoes, rice and green beans. The portions were plentiful and the flavors were fabulous! My major complaint is that I felt a little rushed by the waitress--like taking my order was an inconvenience to her (which was odd, since she seemed to have plenty of time to socialize with customers of the male gender...) Disclaimer: I had only been in the area a couple days, and have since run into this "hurry up, you're wasting my time" attitude on several occasions, so maybe it's just a cultural/regional thing. Its a complete shame that there hasn't been a review on this restaurant yet, but I am honored to do it! Antonio's has been one of the two best Portuguese restaurants in New Bedford for the past 10+ years. Simply put, I know very few people who do not like their plates, or better yet, can actually finish them! A plate is really a "pinella", or pan in Portuguese. The portions are huuuuge! Taste/quality get a slightly lower rating than portion score only because I have never been to a restaurant that has given me more food. That being said, taste/texture is on point...fish plates are fresh, vegetables are always tasty and the food in general tastes damn good. (I strongly encourage the rabbit dinner, simply amazing!) Definitely some of the best Potuguese food in the area. As others have said, it is not a fancy restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. But let's face it, you do not dine out in Fall River / New Bedford if you are looking for an elegant restaurant or a romantic dining experience. Antonio's has, by far,THE best mozambique sauce in the area (order the "Shrimp and Little Necks Antonio's" appetizer). The sauce is incredibly flavorful and if you're not careful you can easily make a meal out of this appetizer when you start dunking the Portuguese bread. The seafood paella is also very good, but tends to be piled high with "filler" items like calamari and mussles. I recommend getting the appetizer described above and trying some other entrees. The pork alentejana (pork & little necks) is phenomenal as well. Far better than that offered at most Portuguese restaurants I've been to. Bottom line... don't miss this place. You may like some items better at other restaurants, but you would be a fool not to give Antonio's a try! read more

Great Portuguese food with huge portions. This isn't the kind of food that can be eaten frequently unless you really want your health to suffer. Between the huge portions of meat and carbs (rice, potatoes and bread with every dish) the lack of vegetables and the gratuitous use of salt nothing here qualifies as health food. Healthy eating aside, the steak chef special is excellent as is the shrimp Mozambique. Eat heavily, drink plenty of water and don't plan anything too physically taxing for after your meal. read more

If I could I would give this restaurant more than 5 stars. It's that good. First time visitor from out of town. It's the whole package - great food (and lots of it), good service and good neighborhood feel to it. I started with shrimp Antonio, sautéed shrimp with chunks of garlic in a Mozambique sauce. The sauce was flavorful with a touch of spiciness but not too hot. This was excellent and a spoon and some bread was needed to fully take advantage of this great sauce. Even though I was filling up on this appetizer I went on to the next round, a pork sandwich (bifana). I had several bifanas while vacationing in Portugal recently and Antonio's was just as good if not better. 3 quarter inch thick slabs of marinated and grilled pork steak were served on a tasty roll. Outstanding. Many many things on the menu looked very good and I look forward to returning. Bring your appetite! read more

I like Antonio's. As mentioned by other reviewers it is very popular. We went on a recent Sun night and waited about 20 min for a table. I've been here a few times, and my favorite dishes to get are the meat skewers. During the last visit I got a lamb skewer, which was on the specials list. I asked for medium and it was indeed medium. And delicious! I like the rice and fries that come with the meal. Also, you get a ton of food. The lamb special was $14 and it was definitely 2+ meals. read more

AWESOME! Absolutely worth every penny. We had Antonio's steamed little necks to start. They were great! It had a bite to the sauce, which if I were eating bread, I would have mopped up every drop. My husband had the Atlantic salmon which had been cooked so the bottom was crispy. Not one piece was left. I had paella for one. Even if I did not have anything before I still would have at least two meals out of it. Lobster, mussels, clams, chix and meat in the best flavored rice, DELISH! We took home a three lb container of the leftovers. And finally we split the flan, we had too, and it was terrific. So don't miss this place and go early, the line is down the block. read more

My wife and I really liked Antonio's but we couldn't always go there as we don't always keep cash on hand. But now they accept credit/debit cards!!! It's on now! No more driving by because we don't have enough cash on us, we are going in! We always try to sit at the bar if we can, because we think the service is better for the most part. But honestly in this case we have never sat at a table here so we don't know if it's true or not. With that said, the service has always been fantastic for us. The food is delicious and there is A LOT of it, you most likely will be bringing some home. I think my favorite right now is either the Paella or the Pork Alentejana . Only three words are necessary for this place: Eggplant French Fries. Yeah, ok, so I'm a total dorkwad and had no idea what I was ordering. I saw eggplant french fries and figured, oh, it's french fries with a little bit of eggplant on the side or sprinkled on top or, well, I really had no idea. They come out the french fries look odd. Not like potatoes. But I still didn't get it. Then I bit into a couple of pieces. Wait! This doesn't taste like french fries. This tastes like french fried eggplant! *cue cherubs* I was pretty lucky. There was parm sprinkled on top so the dairy-allergic boy couldn't eat any. His grandma, who I was meeting for the first time, didn't eat any of that stuff anymore, being in her late 90s. YES! Eggplant french fries all to myself! I remember the rest of the food being pretty good. I had a salmon which was pretty tasty but nothing out of this world. I can't really remember much of the food other than it being better than average but not exceedingly amazing. Best Portuguese restaurant I have been to. The menu is not enormous, but everything is top-notch (I actually prefer restaurants with smaller selection and higher quality). Plus, the portions are huge. I had the pork (cacoila) and littlenecks with potatoes. It was unreal!! The best cacoila I've had, and it's enough to feed 3 people. Go for the friendly waitstaff, the cool Portuguese vibe, the local feel, the amazing wine, the Portuguese rolls ( I think they are called Pops)....the food, so so...I ordered the shrimp Mozambique again..this time, it came with tiny shrimp served in a heavily salted spicy tomato broth with al dente spagetti. It was just ok..too much sauce and the shrimps weren't great. My boyfriend had Paella with the same sauce, rice swimming in it (it was mostly sauce). There were two mussels, half a lobster tail dried to the shell, the same tiny shrimp and a scallop. He is not picky and ate it with gusto. Oh, garlic prevails here. Will go back for the amazing vibe. Had lunch here on Patriot's Day with a bunch of family. The food was very good and the portions are huge. My favorite dish was one of the apps - Littlenecks Bulhão Pato - which is a bowl full of tender sweet littleneck clams in a spicy garlicky broth. Wicked good! Also almost as good were the fried sardines which are whole little sardines that are served with a great side of garlic in oil. They were salty and delicious and crispy. There were 9 of us and our waitress had it all under control. Food came out hot and fast and everything was cooked perfectly. The Portuguese fish fillets were excellent, as was all the seafood. Totes worth the drive the New Bedford from Providence. (And by drive, I mean 45 mins tops). Sometimes, Ryan and I get into these moods where we want to explore nearby towns just to see what they have going on. Last weekend, New Bedford, MA was our destination of choice. While our plan to explore the whaling museum was unsuccessful (had no idea the museum closed at 5 PM!), the decision to stop at Antonio's Restaurant first made the entire trip worth it. Antonio's is pretty much a New Bedford staple and it was obvious with the amount of locals and regulars at the place. The staff was incredibly helpful and accomodating. So let's get down to the food. For an appetizer, we started with a dish that featured littlenecks and delicious broth. The menu called out that this was Martha Stewart's favorite dish when she visited. If it's good enough for M. Stew, it's good enough for me! My lunch consisted of rice, littlenecks, mussels, and grilled chicken doused in a tomato sauce. My plate was 11.99 and there was SO MUCH FOOD! I initially wanted to order the Paella but Ryan said it might be a bit much at 3 PM....good call by him. Ryan ordered a linguica sandwich with peppers and onions. Gotta say, the sandwich was on-point but the fries were a pleasant surprise! They were fresh and perfectly cooked. I love the Shrimp Mozambique. It seriously doesn't get better than this. The portion is out of this world with I swear 30 shrimp in the bowl they give you. With Shrimp Mozambique you have to add some fries. Oh ya, their fries are stupid delicious too. They have a really decent wine menu, with tons of Portuguese wines (obviously) which you seriously try if you like wine! Their steak Antonios is always a great choice! 16oz I think, and you can get a junior size as well. It's topped with ham and an over easy egg which just runs all over the steak. YUM! The steak also comes with two sides which is usually rice and fries. Starch city, but totally worth it. You won't leave Antonios unhappy, so if you haven't been, you're missing out! read more

Great place for delicious Portuguese cuisine! My family and I visited this past weekend. Antonio's had been recommended to us by a few people. I'm Portuguese, grew up on Portuguese food, and have been to most of the Portuguese restaurants in the Fall River-East Providence area but never past the Westport/Dartmouth area. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by the delicious aromas of Portuguese cuisine. Antonio's is a quaint restaurant that has a chef/owner feel. The wait staff has been working there for years and is very familiar with food and the menu. In quite a few cases, the wait staff knew many of the customers as well. Our server was not the friendliest BUT she reminded me of my own Portuguese mother and Grandmother. A basket full of fresh Portuguese bread was dropped off after we ordered. We all shared delicious littlenecks in white wine garlic sauce appetizer and it was delicious. The sauce was so good we used most of the bread sopping it up! I had a bowl of the Portuguese kale soup and it took me back to my mom's kitchen years ago. It was piping hot with big chunks of kale, cabbage, beans, and pasta in a potato broth. The food was presented beautifully in a very old world style. We were given empty plates and the food arrived in what looked like handmade metal pans/pots fresh out of the oven. I had the Carne De Porco Alentejana (Pork, little necks and potatoes) and it was the best Alentejana I have had to date. (Sorry mom) The portion was so large it provided 3 lunch meals for me. My wife had the chicken version of the dish and it was equally delicious...and large. The prices were very reasonable given the vast amount of food we attempted to finish. I had chicken Mozambique and it was easily my favorite preparation of the other Portuguese restaurants i have been to in Fall River before. My meal literally lasted me three days! it was the chicken with sliced fried potatoes ( most similar to a homemade potato chip), and i ordered a side of rice because i love Portuguese rice. they give you portuguese rolls and butter when you sit down (yum!). The food gets it the 5 star rating along with friendly service. The place is a small, family owned, seafood / Portuguese restaurant. A local friend of mine took me there. He knows everyone and everything in town and this is his go to place. Everything is excellent but the standout is the boulabase for two. One whole lobster, clams, shrimp, mussels and scallops in a red seafood stock served with a big bowl of rice. Fresh, baked on site bread. All this and a bottle of wine for $50 - for two. This place is pretty dang good. The portions are huge, so I ended up just getting an appetizer, a couple beers, and a dessert. I wish I could get an entree. I got the Shrimp Antonio's, aka Shrimp Mozambique with rice. The rice was subtly seasoned. When I dripped the heavily seasoned sauce over it, it was great. It had just enough spiciness to taste, not painful at all. The shrimp was a tad overcooked, as evidenced by the chewy chalkiness, as opposed to a tender snap. For dessert, I got a slice of Bolacha Maria cake, aka Maria Cookie Cake. It was my first time having such a dessert. The coffee flavors reminded me of a tiramisu. The cookie layers were extremely thin, but it added an element of chewiness to each bite. There was a pudding or icing in between each cookie layer and it was basically creamy sugar. I got fish and chips and waited about 30 minutes for the food to come out. It was very small inside the restaurant and very loud/close quarters. We had to ask the waiter to bring bread when she finally did appear. She seem to be doing something in the back and did not check on us at all. We had to flag her down as she rushed past us. I was overall disappointed by the food. The fish was mediocre at best and the "chips" were weird square pieces of potatoes like home fries but dry and fried like french fries. Abner and I had gone to Antonio's when we first started dating (over 15 years ago) and had a bad experience. The bad experience was that we did not know that they didn't accept credit cards, so I was left sitting at the table while Abner went in search of an ATM. We were just dating. Recently Abner did some computer work for a Portuguese family and they gave him a gift certificate. Married now. As we were looking through our menus, our server came to our table and (without explanation) took the oil and vinegar from our table and handed it over to a group a few tables over. I thought that was a strange thing to do. I said to Abner, "I think she feels that we won't be needing that." We ordered iced teas and I asked the server for some Splenda. I got one packet. Not enough, so I had to ask for more. What's up with this place and condiments? Our server brought us delicious Portuguese rolls, which were fresh and delicious. We also ordered 2 codfish cakes, that were probably the best we ever had. My dinner came with a salad that was nothing great. The oil and vinegar from the other table, returned to our table. So, I said "Oh, it's back." Abner smirked. Abner ordered the paella and I got the Portuguese steak. Abner's paella was huge! Lots of seafood and he enjoyed it. My Portuguese steak was tender, juicy with 2 fried eggs and slice of ham on top. I was disappointed that there was not red hot peppers for the top, but overall, I enjoyed it very much. There is nothing fancy about Antonio's. It's a paper place mat with advertisements type of restaurant. The food was good and plentiful. Abner and I both left with enough for lunch the next day. Our tummies were full and Abner didn't have to run to the Sovereign Bank this time. Although our server brought whatever we asked for, she was a little rough and not very friendly. We liked our food (very inexpensive, our bill came to only $43), but the entire experience was just mediocre to me. Recommendations: Keep the oil and vinegar containers in the server station, so that it is not taken from one table and brought to another. I stopped in with family on a Sunday afternoon while going antique shopping in New Bedford (I had no idea, either). We entered into a jam-packed family restaurant at around 130pm and felt like we made the right choice right away. Beautiful ambience and a buzzing of waitresses with the hustle and bustle of hungry summer patrons mixed with a wonderful aroma made us smile right away. We were seated in five minutes. We started off with meat and cod cruiser tea and lobster pie. Each was 99 cents and they were all mind blowing appetizers. Flaky crust, warm, flavorful. The cod (bacalao) won that competition. The lobster had just enough spice. Portuguese rolls came with the table. Simple snd amazing. Save it for dipping! Main course we got pork stew (two of them) and the girls shared a paella. DISCLAIMER: you do NOT need to buy two entrees, the portions are among the largest I have ever seen in my 34 years. The seafood was fresh, the pork was flavorful, the sauces were succulent. We brought POUNDS of leftovers home with us. Service was warm and attentive. She seemed like a veteran. Both neighbors were so excited about the food that we struck up conversations! Great Portuguese food. It's a small intimate restaurant with great waitresses. The prices are good.

We loved it. The atmosphere was old school, mainly because the restaurant was old school. It was obvious we were among the only first timers there as I saw the closest two tables order without menus. The paella was a spectrum of different flavors that intermeshed delightfully. Steak and chowder were also marvelous. Would make a side trip just to enjoy the food again.
