The market has a lot of food pantry products, bread, etc. with better ingredients than you'll find in your local chain stores, so if you're looking for a spot (think little sprouts but better) that has quality items including fresh meat to take home and cook near Roanoke this is your place. The cooked food here is also fantastic with the biltong (my kids love it...think beef jerky but better), meat pies, savory lamb minced, breakfast omelettes, bobotie, all are fantastic. I've never had South African food so I didn't know what to expect. First time I visited I got their meatballs which were awesome. This time I went all in and got the bobotie with rice. Bobotie was described as a type of meatloaf, which I love. It was fantastic. Interesting sweet/savory/slightly spicy flavor combo, with the savory elements at the forefront. The portions are kind of small but everything I've had was quite filling. I've never had anything like this place and highly recommend when you're trying to go a bit out of your element. Really good food and if you're looking for something different this is it. It is a family run and family friendly restaurant. It is very casual but it's food can be casual or kinda fancy depending on what you order. They also have baked goods and some bottled drinks that are authentic and again pretty dang good. A hidden gem. The vetkoek and mince was awesome, the bunny chow with bobotie is spectacular. I didn't love the lamb curry,but that's just me. The koeksusters are delicious and while the malva pudding isn't traditional we would definitely go back for more. The biltong didn't do it for us but the boerewoes is delicious, as are all the meat pies. And if you have no idea what any of this means - all the more reason to check out this warm, friendly family business. I would give this place six stars if I could. The husband and wife team that run it are great. We've been here twice - once for lunch, and this time for breakfast. We had heard about Anton's from social media and the breakfast looked great so we picked up breakfast today. Holy cow this was really great! We had the cheese scones+egg+bacon and was one of the best breakfasts I have had in a while. We ordered 6 (whole family) and Anton placed them in the to go box so that they travelled well. I loved the atmosphere-order in the market area (with a great explanation of the options from Nicole), then walk thru the kitchen to the dining area. This was my first encounter with South African cuisine and holy shit it was incredible. The staff was so helpful with navigating a new type of food and explained everything so well. The Lamb Curry is made from scratch all the way down to the cornmeal, it was incredible. Best curry ive ever had, and their bread is unbelievable and fresh. Clearly a family run local business.
