In short: Michael is the best help I have found for carpentry / cabinet / furniture work in Knoxville since moving here 10 years ago. He really cares about his work and making sure his customers are happy. He is also very reasonably priced and very easy to work with. I highly, highly recommend him for any sort of carpentry or furniture work you are considering for your home. We found Michael on yelp and called him about a pantry job we had had in mind for about a year. We have sort of a cookie-cutter home in West Knoxville and the pantry in the home was very small and very builder grade. Our family is expanding -- so we wanted to upgrade the pantry to make better use of the (limited) space we had. We had Michael over to ask him about options. We showed him a video we had found of someone who had a similar problem and had built a solution we really liked. He told us he could do it and we hired him. Pricing was very transparent and very reasonable. He gave us timelines and worked to meet the timeline. There was a delay due to a winter storm in Knoxville, but he always kept us in the loop and worked with us to schedule. When install day came, he was quick and made sure we did not have a big hole in our wall for more than a couple days. Overall, we love the finished product! The work feels high quality and we have so much more space than we are used to. In fact, we're now hiring Michael again to build some cabinetry with a sink insert for our garage. Mike was a great joy to work with. My husband and I wanted a new media cabinet for our new home we had just bought, but everything we liked was either back ordered for 8 months or the specifications were just slightly off from what we wanted. I found Mike via Yelp and got a quote pretty quickly. Since he's local on the westside he invited us to stop by and talk wood choices and any other specifications we might want. We went with walnut and talked about everything from the positioning of cable holes in the back, to the way the doors open and close and he really takes the time to understand your vision. Or if you have a lack of vision he has a lot of ideas or examples of past work that might serve as inspiration. The best part is that you don't have to wait 8 months for Pottery Barn to just tell you that your furniture is yet again further delayed. Mike is super upfront about the time it'll take for final delivery of your piece. He only works on one project at a time so you know when he's starting on yours he's fully committed and that you'll have your piece soon. I wanted a custom bookshelf built into one side of a wall in our bungalow and it ended up simply beautiful--just as if it was there originally. The walls and floors are a bit wobbly because it's an original craftsman bungalow and I know Mike spent much time and care into making sure everything fit perfectly. This is the second project Mike has completed for me. And as great as the first one turned out, the table Mike built exceeded my expectations and then some. Mike turned an incoherent description and unreadable sketches into the coffee table of my dreams. The craftsmanship is stellar, but Mike is far more than an extraordinary craftsman, he's an artist. It was his suggestion to add a strip of walnut to the top of the table to add uniqueness and visual interest and his idea to include the walnut accents on the legs (which I can only image were very, very difficult to execute.) Absolutely thrilled with this outdoor sideboard that Mike built for us. The wood is quartersawn white oak that is from a 250 year old farm house in France. He loves a challenge and works with what he has. He used tongue and groove to secure the pieces so the top is like a single piece of wood!! Very supreme craftsmanship that You don't see anymore. Half the price and beautiful work on a prized possession. I contacted Mike and a few other five star woodworkers on Yelp about an exotic zebra wood table that I purchased 21 years ago. The table had broken and an attempt at repair had been executed by an amateur. It was a mess. Mike was prompt in his reply and was enthusiastic in undertaking the project. Mike approaches his work in an artistic way; he brainstormed with me and imagined a way in which to repair the table that made me feel comfortable. I care a great deal about the table and knew that Mike would respectfully repair it. Mike was able to repair the table in two hours and added a stain and wax finish that brought the unique piece back to life. The work was done beautifully and i could not endorse Mike enough. I should note that Mike charged me for two hours of work and that a different five star woodworker had quoted me five hours. This may be the best woodworking business in LA but I'd never know because this guy is extremely flakey and unprofessional. After agreeing to meet -- and cancelling twice -- he just decided to cancel the job altogether because he was "too busy." Why not tell me that weeks ago so I could have just hired someone that actually wanted to do the job? On a related note, he doesn't work in the afternoons because of traffic. Is that a joke? If I'm paying something thousands of dollars for a job, I don't think asking to meet at 4pm on a Tuesday afternoon is too much to ask. Not to mention he's based only a mile or two from where I live! The only reason I'm not giving him 5 stars is he wasn't always great about communication. This was partly due to circumstances that were out of his control (he got in an accident and we waited until he was well to start back up again). But even before then, he was not very proactive about following up (until the very end when he needed to get the finished piece out of the studio). Michael saw pictures of our absolutely destroyed mid-century modern chairs and was honest enough to tell me he wasn't sure if he could fix them, but was willing to give it a try. The chairs are sturdy, and he waxed them up to a shine plus provided extra wax for the other 4 chairs at home, and pegs to put in the bottom to ensure the chairs slide, hopefully preventing any further destruction.
