I had a really disappointing experience at the Anytime Fitness Naperville location. During my workout, I was approached by the owner, Mike Starck, about an issue I genuinely was not aware of. I acknowledged it right away and told him I would take care of it on my next visit. Instead of handling it professionally, he chose to escalate the situation. He removed my personal belongings and placed them outside, which felt completely unnecessary and disrespectful, especially since I was still actively using the space. There was no one else around my workout area, and the situation did not call for that kind of response. To make things worse, he proceeded to call the police and claimed I was trespassing, which turned what should have been a simple conversation into a public and uncomfortable scene. I understand there are rules and policies, but the way this was handled lacked basic professionalism and respect. Situations like this should be resolved through communication, not escalation. I recently visited this gym as a guest. Three days after my visit, the owner, Mike, called my personal cellphone to explain his shoe policy. During the call, I told him I would try to align with his expectations going forward. His response was rude and dismissive--he stated that I must fully align or I would not be allowed to access the gym again. This is not my regular gym, so access is not a concern, but the tone of the conversation was unprofessional. The call ended with him hanging up on me. Because of this interaction, I will be reporting the experience to Anytime Fitness. Customer communication and respect matter, and this interaction fell well short of that standard. As an avid AF gym goer, i was taken back by the unwelcoming nature of this gym. In any of the 100+ locations Ive worked out , never has it been this hostile and rude. On a dry sunny day I was berated coming through the door. Gym shoes and attire in my bag, clean shoes on my feet, I was chased down on my way to go change into my workout clothes and shoes. Upon inspection of my clean shoes , as i was 5 steps from the showers, I was threatened with police action. Getting asked to leave a gym that I pay for is a new low for this Naperville location. They have predatory practices when trying to cancel. I moved from the area so dropped off my fob at the office when nobody was there. They called me to let me know they found my fob and that's when I let them know I need to cancel. They asked me why, I told them I moved. They said they couldn't cancel over the phone. That I needed to write a letter and mail it to them letting them know I wanted to cancel. I did that and then got a text that they were processing my cancellation but that it would take a month so I would still get charged 2 more times before they actually cancelled my membership. I feel an obligation to speak up on behalf of this gym and its staff. There are some negative reviews on here, and that doesn't sit well with me. This place is truly what a gym should be. Past reviews talk about the street shoe rules as if they're toddlers complaining about mommy. Yes, you need to have clean, gym-use-only shoes. I personally think this is not only brilliant, but necessary. Do ANY amount of research on how gross it is to wear street shoes inside and you may feel the same way. Others complain about the staff or the owner. Again, I'd love to meet some of these reviewers simply out of morbid curiosity. The owner, Mike, could not be nicer or more approachable. He knows people by name, is a great supporter of his members' goals, and goes the extra mile to keep his facility clean. The equipment is always functional, the other gym members are respectful, and the trainers are top notch. If you're considering gyms in the area, please give this one a try. Wow...I just read the one star reviews and am wondering if these people are even talking about the same gym. The Anytime Fitness location I joined two years ago in Aurora sadly closed so I was forced to look around at all the other locations in my area. The Naperville Anytime Fitness on Rickert Road is hands down one of the best locations by far, and I tried them all. The owner, Mike, is great. He's always friendly, upbeat, kind, helpful, and accommodating. The gym itself is one of the cleanest I've ever seen. It has every piece of equipment you could ever want or need, and it's always well maintained. People are friendly and it's a really good environment. It's large enough to not feel overwhelmed even during peak hours. Highly recommend this location. read more

I would love to leave ZERO stars! I'll start with the owner. He might have the worst customer service ever, and and no way can you believe comments saying that this guy is genuine or nice. The gym is filled with super old machines and weights. Honestly the worst anytime I've been to in the Chicagoland area. If you don't believe me look for yourself. I've been to many, many gyms in my day all across the country as I used to do a lot of travel for business and this is the CLEANEST and best run gym I've ever been in. Mike and team do a great job running the place, it's a great place to work out, they have all the equipment you need. I've been a member for over 5 years and wished I had left Xpsorts so much sooner to join this gym. As far as COVID protection, they are insistent on everyone wearing a mask which I'm very happy to see! I feel a lot safer there than some of the other gyms that I've heard stories about wear some people are masked up and others aren't. I have been a member of several of the chain gyms in the area. When I left Anytime Naperville, it was simply because I moved out of the area. It's the first and only gym I rejoined when moving back to this area. It's the cleanest environment I've ever worked out in and one of the safest gym experiences. I love that this is a private club and Mike, the owner, makes sure that all the members support a safe, clean and inviting environment. I have never had an issue and Mike Starck is 100% the reason I came back. He cares about and encourages all his members, no matter where you're at in your fitness journey. I also love that the gym is NEVER overcrowded. I can always work out, even if it's quick. We are family. I brought a guest, who was so impressed by the cleanliness and the culture--she joined. I also highly recommend Sharon as a trainer. I have had over a dozen personal trainers in the last decade and she's in my top 3. She is the most educated and supportive. read more

The owner speaks in an upbeat voice, to condemn anything you're doing incorrectly. Went in with a new member, who didn't have a fob yet, and was called on the phone to discuss the policy. I gave the members name, but he didn't care. Literally, watches the cameras and gave me kudos for changing my shoes. Not a rule breaker - and don't want to be treated as one. After paying for over 2 years, and going twice, he's cancelled my membership effective immediately. If you belong to another Anytime, but go to this one, you're not welcomed. I don't "Fit the culture" is what I was told. Yelp warned me - and I didn't listen...Do yourself a favor - go elsewhere. I'm reading all the negative reviews on here and I don't get. The atmosphere is top notch clean and I'm sure the shoe policy that people are complaining about helps with that. Mike, personally greeted me, gave me a tour and went over some of the more than reasonable guidelines for the establishment. The staff has been very cordial and has went out of their way to meet me because they recognize that I am a newer member. I think that Mike takes pride in his work and I can totally respect his vision for the ambiance that he wishes to create at this gym. It appears that people will either love or hate this establishment. My wife and I are on the loving end. Needless to say Anytime is open 24 hours, so it is first and foremost convenient. It's also very reasonably priced. This is definitely the cleanest gym I've ever been to, to the point of anal-retentive-ness. It has everything you need and nothing you don't- (I'm not one for swimming pools and tanning salons)- all the standard gym equipment, well-maintained. The staff and fellow members are generally very considerate, and although it's a tight-knit community of sorts, you can find plenty of privacy. And although the gym is small, I've never had to wait for a machine or felt I didn't have room for my routines. I've had good and bad experiences with the personal trainers, but everyone is well qualified. The owner/manager is energetic to say the least, and he goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. I am paying for a membership to anytime fitness. I have gone to multiple clubs in the 6 months that I have been working out. Today I tried to workout at this location near my parents home in Naperville and my mother came to inquire about a drop in. Only seconds after entering the building an incredibly rude middle aged white man came up and accused us of stealing, threatened us with a $250 fine, and demanded that we BOTH leave and not come back despite the fact that having been paying for an anytime fitness for quite some time and am allowed to go to different locations. This interaction embarrassed and deeply upset my mother who was just curious about a membership or drop in and I don't understand why I am not allowed to use the membership I am paying for. I've used this location because it's convenient right next to my daughters school , as I've read in the reviews there's a middle aged man who must be the owner and as he might come across nice he's very ignorant when someone wants to work out! I was reluctant to come back to a gym and I had been dealing with numerous life losses. So when I stopped at the gym and was thinking of going back I was shocked by the confrontational attitude of the owner when I had paid my dues though the entire pandemic even though I didn't attend. I have rarely experienced such nasty "customer service" in my life. After experiencing a job loss due to corporate downsizing, I reached out to the local franchise owner to ask how to cancel. He was dodgy and wouldn't provide a direct answer. About a month later I get a text that says, "any chance of getting the account current or should we just handle this in small claims court?" Really? Over $87?? He didn't call me (I had received a few robocalls), or simply text and ask if he could help me work out some sort of payment, just are you going to pay or do I have to sue you? Absurd. I called the national billing number and paid, and sent a certified letter canceling my membership as soon as it ends. Who treats people like that and expects to retain business?? Was reminded of this location by someone after a few years and decided to check on my review. I'm pleased to see Mike responded, though I worry with how much he struggled to comprehend the concept of a nickname (especially considering his own name is probably Michael). As I recall, both times that Mike confronted me to say my gym bag was not welcome in his gym, it was within the confines of the (one single) squat rack, where no one should ever "have trouble walking over or around a large bag." When working with weights that are heavy for me, I like to wear a weight belt for safety purposes. I also keep prescription medicine in my bag in case I have a medical emergency. While trying to explain this to Mike, he interrupted me and said I'm a meathead. It makes sense that this Anytime Fitness location has more 1-star reviews than 5-star reviews. There is a much more customer-friendly, newer, and better-equipped Anytime Fitness location about ten minutes away on Route 59. I've been there several times and never been accosted or insulted by an employee or owner. read more

As a reader I would be very hesitant to believe any bad review on this gym (especially any concerning the owner, Mike). It's very seldom I leave a review unless I feel I've been greatly impacted by something, whether it was positive or negative. I was in town visiting home for a week and desperately needed somewhere to work out. I actually borrowed my brother's pass and thought I might sneak a workout in. I was greeted by Mike who introduced himself to me. I explained the situation and he allowed me to come workout for the entire week w just a small 1 time fee. He explained that he encourages friends and family to come workout, even if it's for a short stay. It's clear from just a few days of going to the gym that it's a community. Trainers introduced themselves to me as they saw me, regulars were saying hi to one another and taking classes together and Mike, the owner, was always cleaning and greeting ppl by their first names. I've been a member of Anytime Fitness in Naperville for one year, coming to the gym 4 - 6 times a week and have had an outstanding experience. The owner, Mike Stark, is a professional with extensive experience in the health/fitness industry and runs a great gym. The gym is extremely clean, every single piece of equipment is in working condition and is cleaned multiple times a week. Thankfully, there is a "shoe policy" in which you change into your workout shoes when you arrive at the gym. I'm a huge fan of this policy, especially during the winter months. For those who have an issue...would you wear your own shoes throughout your house after walking in the snow / salt / slush? I didn't think so. If you're an individual who uses the gym as a 'pick-up' place, likes to walk around with your shirt off, or grunts excessively during reps, this isn't your gym. If you want to get in a solid workout, by all means this is an outstanding facility with great equipment and a selection of personal trainers to help you with your fitness goals. As far as the negative comments about Mike Stark, I've interacted with him every single time I've been at the gym (one year, 4 - 6 times per week, you do the math) and I have had nothing but extremely positive experiences with him. The only time I've seen him be firm with people is after the other person has raised their voice, can't follow basic gym rules (i.e., shoe policy) or has been disrespectful in some other way. If you have the mental capacity to follow basic rules, you'll have no problem and will appreciate the professional manner in which this gym is run. It is worth mentioning, this gym is ranked one of the top/elite gyms in the Anytime Fitness franchise year after year. I am traveling cross country and have visited many AF gyms. AF Naperville is exceptionally clean and well equipped. I use a mix of free weights, machines, and HITT equipment and this place had everything I need. The equipment was in great shape, If you go to the gym often, you know that in some gyms, the equipment is 'shredded', meaning torn, dirty, and/or broken. Not this one, the facility feels uncrowded even if there are many people in there working out. The members are freindly and welcoming. When I signed up for Anytime Fitness in Naperville, I was very clear with the owner, Mike, about a current medical condition that I had. When it came time to signing up he had me join on a 2 year contract however, he told me that should my medical condition become worse or make it difficult for me to keep the membership he would be willing to let me out of the contract... Several months later my condition worsened and I was unable to workout due to vertigo. When I let Mike know that I would need to cancel as he had told me he would let me out of the membership he went back on his word and did not allow me to cancel. Instead he threatened to take me to court if I did not pay each month. He would not even settle for letting me out of the contract early even when I had a doctors note. I had to go through Customer Service and the head of Anytime Fitness in order to get through to him. While this is a very clean gym, it also was very uncomfortable working out somewhere when the owner constantly is cleaning a machine that I am using because one drop of sweat went onto the floor. I had always cleaned my machines off so this was extremely disrespectful of him to do and very distracting while trying to relieve stress doing what I enjoy doing. Would not recommend this location to anyone looking for a membership. Very dishonest and greedy. Does not care about the members as people. read more
