This is another take out place I like going in my neighborhood. Sawtelle has an abundance but this is where you go when you want karaage or rice dishes. (and Japanese teridogs) The most unique dish here is their Sicilian Rice and it happens to be what I always get here. There's nothing remotely Sicilian in it, but that's what it is called and is the specialty of a prefecture in Japan called Saga. It's like a perfect lunch item to me since it has rice, fresh veggies, sweet/salty sauces, and meat. Basically a teribeef bowl with rice and salad. The rice is always super warm here when I get them so when the weather gets colder, the more it hits the right spot. Portion could run small for some people but I find it perfect. The karaage is very tasty too so I sometimes get their's over the typical bucket fried chicken on the weekend. There's a few seats outside and it's very reminiscent of a tiny take out place in Japan. Still got to try the pork, loco moco, and keema curry. You order at the counter (or online) and they have some small tables and stools where you can chill. I parked in the lot, walked about ten steps to Anzu, grabbed my order, and jumped in the car and headed home. Anzu's really convenient considering how busy Sawtelle can be. It was my first time trying kaarage chicken and it was soooooo good. I got the Kaarage chicken which included rice, 6 pieces of chicken, salad and water. For sauces I got the sriracha aioli, which is pretty much a sriracha/mayo sauce. If you're in doubt, I would recommend getting this sauce. It paired well with the chicken. I was curious to see how Japanese fried chicken would taste like since I'm used to eating Korean fried chicken which uses seasonings/coatings. Nevertheless, it was very flavorful and very crispy and I really enjoyed it! We also ordered fries which were alright. The place is quite small with limited seating so it might be difficult to accommodate a large party. Also note the business's hours. They're open on certain and specific times of the day. They have a parking lot where you can enter on La Grange. I'm not sure if it's free during the day, but when we came there at night it was valet and not free :( There's plenty of street parking though! read more

Pretty decent karaage chicken for a good price too! I wish I found this place out earlier! It is a bit difficult to find since it's not located where all the other restaurants in Sawtelle are at. I really enjoyed their karaage chicken which came out fresh and crunchy! I ordered the combo which came with chicken, rice, a small salad, fries, a drink, and a dipping sauce of your choice. I tried the Ponzu sauce, but I wish I had gotten the Sriracha one. Ponzu isn't really a dipping sauce and so, it didn't really add much flavor when combined with the chicken or the fries. I was just surprised at how cheap the meal was since the combo only came out to be around $13 considering how filling it is and how expensive other places in Sawtelle are. You won't always find seats here since the place itself is outdoors and super small. Parking is really limited to street parking around the area, but if you can't find any, then you can always go to the Michael's parking structure that has free parking. It's just a really long walk away from the place. Overall, I would definitely come back and would recommend it to anyone! read more

This place is actually perfect. Small cozy space (limited seating), and cheap parking right next to it (I believe it was $1.50 for 2 hours?)! I am always on the search for good karaage chicken, but that search is now over. A coworker recommended this place and labeled it "a must try" and I am now doing the same. If you are in the area and craving karaage chicken, this is the place to go. The karaage chicken was tender, juicy and fried perfectly. I enjoyed the fact that the chicken was not dripping in oil like it can be at other places. The portion size of the karaage chicken rice dish is perfect. It comes with six pieces of chicken over shredded cabbage and some rice. There are four sauce options that all come on the side. I ended up getting the sriracha aioli, which ended up being the perfect compliment to the chicken. Came here for a quick dindin and was not disappointed. Felt like I was back in Japan again. It's a little store front where you order via the window and a few spots to eat right out front. This is the Sawtelle restaurant that made me finally get a Yelp account because EVERYONE who visits Sawtelle should know about this place. I live in the neighborhood and have visited pretty much everything there is to be had, and Anzu is one of the spots I visit the most. It's a literal hole in the wall--there's a door with a window that you order from, and there are a couple of seats out front if you feel like eating there. It's hiding behind Mizu 212, which is a shame because that place is awful. Like, the only awful place on Sawtelle. Don't go to Mizu 212. But definitely DO go to Anzu. Anyway, the menu is pretty short, and admittedly I haven't tried any beef burger yet because their chicken is just so freaking good. The kara-age is easily the best I've had in any capacity--not too greasy or heavy, no chewy bits, and decently sized. A 10-piece split with another person with an order of their umami fries and some Sriracha aioli will fill you up perfectly. Speaking of, good lord--their fries are INCREDIBLE. They have a tender crisp to them and such a unique flavor that I can't really think of anything else to compare them to. I just crammed another in my mouth after typing that last sentence out. They're a necessary add-on. The kara-age burger is also a great choice, and I equate it to a high-end Chic-fil-A sandwich. I think you can get a kara-age burger, fries, and a canned drink for somewhere in the ballpark of $10, so nothing's badly priced at all. I've also gotten their curry dog once, and I really liked it a lot, though it's their chicken that keeps me coming back. It's what they're known for, after all. Still recommend it if you're in the mood for a hot dog! In terms of employees, appearance, and all that stuff, it's exactly fine. Nothing crazy special, everything's simple and clean, and the interaction you'll have with the person who takes your order is pleasant and brief. Zero complaints there. Easily one of the best spots on Sawtelle. They've got irregular hours (but they're always open during lunch and dinner times), and they're closed on Tuesdays, so watch out for that. Not a lot of folks who visit Sawtelle realize it's even there, so it really is, as some of the other reviews have already said, the definition of a hidden gem. read more

This place offers the juiciest and in my humble opinion, the BEST chicken karaage in town! And they are very generous with their portions, not bite sized! Got the 10 pc Karaage Chicken for "snacking", but we were pleasantly surprised that they are large pieces! Tender juicy on the inside yet crispy on the outside. Yum! With a 10-pc order, you get to choose 2 side sauces. We got ponzu and spicy mayo. The dash of squeezed lemon juice with the ponzu sauce was my favorite combo, was actually quite summer-y refreshing. Food: After a quick conversation with the guys working here, they suggested the karaage chicken combo with rice. I got a small salad, about 6-8 pieces of thigh meat fried chicken, a medium size portion of rice and a coke for less than $10. thats a great value. Overall i enjoyed my meal. The food put me at a perfect fullness that I was able to continue my day without feeling heavy. The chicken tasted as if it was fried on the spot and was steaming with every bite. Rice was cooked well, and the salad had a great dressing. Overall, Anzu executed a proper karaage chicken. No fluff, or anything of that nature. Solid food in my opinion. For $9 I got the chicken karage over rice, which comes with a small salad. The fried chicken pieces were pretty huge, but juicy and crispy. The sriracha aioli I got with it really complemented the chicken. The small salad is nice as a counter to the oiliness/crispiness--the lettuce is decent, but the vinaigrette dressing they have is really tasty and makes it. Would come again, but probably just for a takeout order of the chicken. For lunch, it gets too packed, and I dont like awkwardly waiting around for a table when I'm already holding my ready order. read more

I would not come with a large group and expect to find seating as it's difficult enough to nab seats for 2 people. I would not consider myself a Karaage expert but Anzu's Karaage is pretty bomb. Juicy (JUICY!!) chicken fried to perfection and paired with one of four sauces. I also found that portions are pretty generous for the price. I think their burger/hot dog options are pretty interesting too and I'd come back to try those out next time. Maybe it has been used more in a business setting, but kaizen seems like it applies to how the japanese adopt food from other cultures. The concept of Anzu seems like a Japanese interpretation of American fast food, but done with the care and attention to detail typical of Japanese food. The karaage meal comes with juicy, deep fried dark meat chicken with your choice of four sauces, steamed rice, a cabbage slaw, and french fries. As you can see in my picture, the chicken is juicy and crispy. The lemon and cabbage slaw are acidic and help to cut the fattyness of the french fries and karaage. Saw this new place on yelp while I was looking for food and I can say that my friends and I made a good decision coming here for dinner. It's more of a to-go place, there's about four tables and the door opens up to a counter. I like how the place is dainty and simple similar to what you would see in downtown cities. I also find that finding small places like these over grand, big restaurants are a definite gem. Their most famous dish is the karaage chicken, which is in other words, fried chicken. It looks like popcorn chicken but the flavor is not as overpowering. The chicken was tender and the flavor was just right. They have a variety of sauces -- I went with the ponzu and Sriracha aioli which both tasted amazing with the kaarage chicken. They have this as either a rice dish or as a snack size. I would definitely come back here again if I'm craving fried chicken (I would take it over popcorn chicken). The staff and their customer service is amazing. We ordered to-go but decided to eat there instead and the cashier noticed so he delightfully offered to give us water and asked if we had wanted any sauces.
