This place might be five star but not for their eating area which consists of four outdoor patio tables which each seat only two people. That said the customer service was good. Great new casual spot for food on sawtelle. I hope they do well because they are off the beaten track, around a corner and super easy to miss. It's literally just a door where you order your food. There are a few tables outside if you want to eat there, which is what we chose to do. We got the karaage chicken and the cheese burger with umami fries. Everything was delicious. I think only thing I could say is that the karaage was pretty salty, but it was fine with white rice on the side. The cheeseburger for $5.50 was priced great and nice and simple. Fries were amazing! It was battered with similar ingredients to the fried chicken. Love what Anzu's got going on here. I was recently invited to a fried chicken potluck (basically my dream party) and immediately took to Yelp to find the best takeout on the Westside. Anzu came in hot with awesome reviews, easy ordering through the Yelp app, and close proximity to my house. I punched in an order of karaage (15 pieces) with one side of ponzo and two sides of sriracha aioli and it was ready surprisingly quick! I booked it over there to claim my majestic mini mountain of fried poultry. Anzu is a darling little walk up window right off of Sawtelle with a small parking lot out back. There are a few small tables if you'd like to sit down with your meal there--I plan on doing that and seeing what's up with this karaage right after it comes off the fryer. To be honest, I didn't give my order everything it needed for fried chicken success. I was a few minutes late picking it up, the entire order went flying across my car en route to aforementioned potluck, and it probably sat out for a good 30 minutes after arrival before anyone took a bite. I was pretty interested in this small hole in the wall restaurant after my roommate recommended it to me! FOOD: We got the the Karaage chicken with two sauces (this was a side order of around ten pieces). We also got the curry which came with rice. I think that we wished that the keena curry had more vegetables...it had some sort of ground meat texture and was very heavy and thick. But it went well with the white rice. It was a little sweet and had a nice spicy kick which I appreciated. The Karaage chicken was well prepared, juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It didn't feel too heavy like fried chicken usually makes me feel. The sauces (sriracha aioli and ponzu) were okay-- nothing really to write home about. Price was around 20+ dollars for these two items. Ambience: They have a parking lot in the back and a couple of seats. You order in like a booth and they give you your food. It seems more like a place for to-go orders. Service was fast and they answered our questions about the menu. Ask them for water cups :) Overall, it's a solid spot for some karaage chicken, but I don't think I would frequent it. Glad I tried once though! read more

But since I was in the area, and bored of all the spots on sawtelle, i decided to finally give this place a try after many years of walking past it. "Juicy" definitely is the best descriptor for their chicken. The batter isnt crispy or anything, as I dont think the japanese way is to have a thick batter, but the flavor of the chicken is amazing. I cant really say much more. Its good... real good. I'll be coming here more often to make up for lost time. *** LIKES: They have a parking lot in the back (side). The fried chicken is amazing. This is a hidden gem among all the craziness on Sawtelle. Tucked away off of La Grange and Sawtelle, you can not only find 2-hour parking for $2.50 but this small hole-in-the-wall. Anzu draws folks in for their exceptional chicken kaarage but I soon learned that the rest of their menu is also noteworthy. During my first trip here, I shared an order of chicken kaarage while waiting for a loco burger and cheese burger combo (which was split between three people). I asked the owner what item he recommended and he instantly said, "Cheese burger." I am a classic burger kind of gal and I didn't question his recommendation. The kaarage is moist, well-seasoned, and cooked to perfection. The fries are like crack -- I can't figure it out but they aren't your standard french fries. The technique, the seasoning -- it's like chicken fries but without the chicken. The loco burger was a nice surprise as I rarely ever eat loco moco. The sauce isn't Hawaiian-style gravy; rather, it's more like a tonkatsu demi-glaze. The buns are sweet and buttery, toasted just right to handle all sauce and burger patty. The cheeseburger is legit. The special sauce is tangy and sweet. The burger is perfectly seasoned. The toasted buns add a nice sweet, buttery taste to the whole thing. We also saw folks order a loco moco plate and chicken salad -- both on our order at our next visit. I am an instant fan of this place. The prices are cheap for the quality of food. read more

I love the simplicity of this little spot. They make only a few items, of which most are centered around their signature karaage fried chicken. Karaage is one of my favorite things to eat when I need a lighter, smaller snack that doesn't involve tanking a full bowl of ramen. Straight up karaage! This is a little kitchen with very limited (outdoor) seating, so not that ideal for big parties, but they are great for takeout or a quick snack. The fried chicken is very good, and comes out sizzling hot. They have a bunch of great sauces that come with the chicken. Great little hole in the wall if you like karaage chicken. It is a little pricey though which is why I'm rating Anzu the 4 stars. I also really like the curry bowls that they offer. The Japanese curry is very rich in flavor, comes with an egg on top and meshes very well with the rice. The fried chicken comes with one or two sauces depending on how many pieces you get. I'm not a Karaage chicken expert and I don't even really enjoy chicken thigh meat but that being said, I found the Chicken Karaage cooked well, flavored nicely and exactly what I needed to meet my chicken craving. The FOOD is focused, I really appreciate that. I would recommend the Karaage as it is juicy and flavorful. I agree with @Ana L., I would opt out of the Seasame seeds on my rice and I don't think I really needed a side of Fries. The AMBIENCE is simple and I like it that way. Seating outside, order at the counter, enjoy a little escape on a small offshoot street off of Sawtelle with parking along side the restaurant. The BOTTOM LINE is that this place is a great simple spot that is affordable, flavorful and focused on delivering great Karaage chicken. I had been wanting to check out Anzu for some time now so when it was my turn to pick lunch, I knew exactly where we were going. I'm glad I did! The location is tiny. It's just an order window, a bar with 4-5 stools, and 2 tiny 2 person tables. If you're planning on eating here, just know you might be standing around waiting for someone to vacate a seat. Might be best to plan on getting your order to go. The food was fanatic. I got the chicken combo and while on eye site alone it looked like it wouldn't fill me up, it turned out to be just the right amount of food. The chicken was lightly breaded, but the frying gave it the perfect amount of crunch while keeping the inside incredibly juicy and flavorful. It also isn't overly salty which is a common misstep for fried chicken. In all, it both tasted familiar, yet unique which I loved. The rice and salad were also great. The fries were fine. They're seasoned and, honestly, didn't add a whole lot to the meal. If you're not wanting to get a combo, I would maybe skip getting the fries as a side. I also got the siracha mayo as my dipping sauce. I tend to not like spicy things (& siracha as a whole) but I found the spice/flavor of the sauce excellent. It only improved upon the taste of both the chicken & fries. I just wish I had gotten more of it as I ran out towards the end of my meal. In all, it was an excellent meal. I will definitely be back and I will definitely be singing Anzu's praise to other friends/coworkers. read more

A friend introduced me to Anzu a couple of months ago, and I am hooked. Best karaage chicken on the Westside (and maybe in LA?). My go to is the karaage chicken and rice with ponzu. Husband really likes the cheeseburger. (Totally random but he said it's good. ‍) My toddler also likes the chicken so that's a big plus. This outdoor takeaway is a decent option for kaarage. I ordered the curry kaarage which came with curry kaarage with a sunny side egg and a salad. The portions were nice, big, and fresh. However the taste of the chicken was personally a little salty and some portions were a bit drier than I would have liked (maybe due to the fact that it was much smaller pieces than the kaarage rice) Additionally the breading of the kaarage was definitely lacking and didn't add much to the texture of the chicken. read more

Great prices and everything I've ordered here has been delicious. The chicken is perfection - crispy on the outside and SO juicy on the inside. They are crazy addictive and easy to eat, if you don't pay attention you'll scarf everything down before you know it! The keema curry is also one of the best curries I've had in Sawtelle. Who knew that a small popcorn chicken shop would have amazing curry? The Sicilian Rice, Ginger Pork, and Teriyaki Burger are also delicious. This place is perfect! A hole in the wall, simple yet delicious. This is one of my favorite spots to go to when I'm in Sawtelle. My favorite is the karaage rice dish combo, which comes with umami fries and a drink. The karaage which is so juicy and crispy, comes on a bed of cabbage and a side of rice. I really enjoy the karaage with either their ponzu sauce or the sriracha aioli. Service is great and although seatings are very limited, I would recommend this place to anyone! read more

Hands down best karaage fried chicken I've ever had. And that's coming from someone whose eaten A LOT of karaage. I've worked at so many japanese restaurants over the course of 4 years. Dude that batter and seasoning is so delicious and it's not as heavy as karaage usually is. We were thinking about 10 pcs each but the dude who took our order was like...damn are you sure you guys could eat that much. The pcs are pretty hefty so we ended up getting the karaage rice dish.
