Vanished Rug Apelian picked up my rug to clean it. Three weeks later, they had charged me for the cleaning, but never delivered the rug back to me. I called repeatedly, and Gary promised to deliver it 4 separate times, but it never came. I went to the store to get it, and find they are closed, except by appointment. Gary would not let me make an appointment to come get it, promising a delivery which never happened. read more

We are shopping for basement carpet. I made one phone call to Apelian Carpets, and Garry Apelian came to my home with a few samples of what he has done in the past for houses similar to mine. Then, when I saw a picture online of a carpet style I liked even better, Garry immediately ordered a sample of that. When the sample came in, Garry and I met at his showroom (quiet, nice, light, bright, good (metered) street parking). He had the sample of the carpet I saw on the Internet plus other recommendations, including a carpet style that was softer, easier to vacuum, but the same color and style, for less money. Fantastic! There was also a great selection of vinyl flooring for those interested in a waterproof flooring material, and piles of bound remnants for area rugs. I appreciated that everything was tagged with a price so I could see which styles were more expensive. Above all, Garry seems really knowledgeable about all his products. He said he has been selling carpet since the 1970s and this storefront opened in the 1960s. He responds to e-mail and phone calls. During my appointment with him, he was down-to-earth, respectful, and friendly to both me and our baby who was along for the ride. Thanks, Garry! P.S. Apelian installed our carpets a few years ago. We were going to install new tile in our entry hallway. I talked to Garry, one of the owners, because they needed to pull back the carpeting and remove the wood blocks that leveled the carpeting to the old tile floor. Garry told me they would pull back the carpeting first and then remove the wood blocks after the new tile was installed by the company doing the work. We set up a day and time for Apelian to come out. A few days before I called Garry to confirm the day and price. Rene and another man came out and pulled back the carpeting. He also suggested it might be a good idea to have the tile installers remove the wood blocks. He said Apelian would charge less because it would be less work. They would only have to tack the carpeting down. The tile company told me they did not want to take responsibility for removing the blocks under the carpeting. I called Garry to tell him what Rene suggested and that Apelian would still need to remove the blocks like we discussed. For some reason Garry started yelling at me and was very agitated and rude on the phone. He said he did not want to deal with a third party. The tile installers should remove the wood blocks. What third party? I told him you installed the wood blocks when you initially laid the carpeting. Why was he getting so upset. We had discussed this before. If he didn't want to do the job, why didn't he tell me when we first talked about it. Don't tell me three days before the tile installers were coming out. His very heated and rude response did not make any sense, especially since we had discussed the removal of the wood blocks in a previous conversation. Needless to say, I would never recommend Apelian and, obviously, never use them again. read more

While I have never written a negative review of any business, and I'm particularly reluctant to berate and harshly criticize a local retail operation, I feel compelled to alert others to the thoughtless, irresponsible business practices of Apelian. I had contracted Apelian to clean certain area rugs/carpets and emphasized that removing the dining room carpet would require 3 to 4 men. I offered to cover the additional cost since 2 men would not be able to lift the very heavy 10-foot marble top of our dining room table. Disregarding my insistence, Apelian sent only 2 men to replace the rug which required lifting the marble dining table top. Needless to say, the beautiful marble table top -- given to my husband and me by my parents as a wedding and house gift -- fell and broke. I immediately called Apelian, described what had occurred, offered photos to show the table broken in half, and asked that they either arrange to find a new marble table top -- although I feared that this Rose Italian Marble, bull-nosed solid 10-foot piece would be difficult to find. Not one response, not even a polite phone call in response to my great distress, came even after 3 more phone calls. Only once was I told by someone on the Apelian staff how sorry he was, that he would contact the claims department regarding their insurance as well as the attorney to covertable replacement or replacement cost, and then he would get back to me. Even after I personally stopped by the store multiple times and asked to speak with the owner or his son, with copies of invoices and estimates of cost to replace the marble in hand that had beenb provided by the interior designer who helped us find the original, not one follow-up phone call NOT ONE PHONE CALL IN RESPONSE, NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY ARRIVED, AND EQUALLY AS OFFENSIVE, I WAS IGNORED BY THE OWNER WHO DISAPPEARED WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO SPEAK WITH HIM. Because I am the executive director of an integrative cancer treatment center, my hours are very limited, but I continued to pursue whenever an opportunity to drive to the store was available. My final encounter was shocking! In very insulting, rude tones I was dismissed with a comment to the effect, "This issue is two years old now," particularly shocking since I had made many, many attempts in the preceding time, hoping for some responsible, thoughtful response to the damage they had caused. By the way, I will also contact Angie's List since I have a membership and trust their recommendations, but Apelian deserves the word, reprehensible and merits no place on their list! Sadly, Apelian did do a good cleaning job, but I would caution anyone with any valuable piece in your home against allowing Apelian to clean any carpets and definitely not if it's necessary to move any furniture or furnishings if neceassary to remove a carpet or rug for cleaning. I'm confident that there are other good carpet and rug cleaning services in Evanston that have responsible business practices and are respectful towards their customers. PBB Evanston, IL read more

Gary and the rest of the family couldn't be nicer and more helpful. Multi-generational business. I have now bought a dozen carpets from them. They carry bound remnants(leftover pieces from bigger jobs) that are sooo inexpensive for the quality its unbelievable. They have great quality carpeting, a great selection of carpets, super quick quality installation, and they are very knowledgable and helpful about everything carpet related. read more

Do NOT use them for any cleaning services. They will promise the moon over the phone, get your and then on the day of the picl up slip a note that says "do not guarantee" that they ca remove all stains and odors.. to the contrary of the verbal agreement. They not only ruined my 12 by 9 Karastan (colors bleed in spots) but never got any of the odors out. When I called - I was told to look at the pink paper and buzz off. Very curt and be super wary of this place. Also - this is my first ever Y review - felt so mad and that I needed to warn others of this spot. Stay away. read more
