Apizza: Dyker Pizza Company is an artisanal pizzeria that opened in Brooklyn, New York in September 2023. It was founded by restaurateur Robert Cicero. His parents, John and Maria Cicero, founded the Original John's Deli in Brooklyn's Gravesend neighborhood in 1968. The Cicero Family created what has become known as the "best hero in Brooklyn!" Although location on the corner of 86th Street and Stillwell Avenue still stands, it is no longer owned by the Cicero Family. The family does own and operate two newer locations, dubbed "John's Deli Hero King" in Brooklyn's Dyker Heights neighborhood as well as Staten Island. After many years of working in the delis, the Cicero's son Robert began taking up the art of crafting exceptional pizza. When a location opened up down the street from John's Deli's Dyker Heights location, Robert seized the opportunity to turn it into his own artisanal pizzeria. I recently visited Dyker Pizza Company for lunch while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn breweries and pizzerias and this was my first stop of the day. I arrived just as they opened for the day. I told the employee that I'm from New Haven and asked if they pronounced 'apizza' the same way that we do in the Elm City: [ah-BEETS]. He confirmed that they did. It seems that from the late 19th century until around the 1950s or so, most Italian-Americans referred to pizza as "apizza" whether it was New Haven-style pizza or not. The employee explained to me that the pizza at Dyker Pizza Company is a hybrid between New Haven-style and the artisanal sourdough style that is becoming more common in NYC. Customers can order by-the-slice or whole pies. I was pretty hungry, and after looking over the menu I decided to order the "Pesto and Prosciutto" (ricotta cream, shredded mozzarella, basil pesto, prosciutto). Whoever is responsible for all those best pizza place lists I beg you to please go to Dyker pizza aka Apizza. This was one of the best pizzas I've ever had anywhere and I've been to many that fall on those top pizza lists and this was better!!!!! I was expecting a regular Brooklyn slice (which is usually great at any Brooklyn pizzeria) but this blew me away. We ordered a mushroom pie. Made with sourdough, the crust was light and airy with just the right amount of charring. The mushrooms were fresh. Just pizza perfection. The Sicillian salad was perfect with olives and walnuts. Have to say the pizza may be the prettiest I've ever seen, downright gorgeous. If you needed a slice to put on screen to make people salivate THIS would be it, BUT, as my parents and grandparents used to say "you eat with your mouth not your eyes"- so, maybe I'm being unfair, because I thought the taste would knock my socks off, be the best ever, but not even close. I tried three different slices, Margarita, regular and Sicilian, and they were pretty much the same. This is not to say I was disappointed, but I rode half an hour out of my way, because I just happened to be in that neighborhood the day before and unfortunately had had two slices already at two other places nearby so was not hungry. The looks continued in terms of the handsomeness of the place, very much trying to catch an old fashioned place but high end, and I liked the calmness of the neighborhood, that you are looking at houses and not stores, but what I personally didn't like was the playing of modern music, didn't match how the place looked at all. Overall I'd recommend, you can comfortably have a larger group here, no one could possibly complain about the pizza, but in the back of one's mind it'll be like "gosh I noticed this knockout but I had a better time with the dressed down sister, she could hold a conversation"- I missed the sloppy pizza that somehow tasted better. read more

This review is only for their pasta, specifically the carbonara. For 20 dollars after tax, the carbonara definitely underperformed. As evident in the photo, the pancetta was extremely thin and limited, which didn't help enhance the dish must. The dish was creamy, but flavorless, which made it filling but not enjoyably so. The staff were friendly and quick, and interior seating looked comfy, but the carbonara pasta left a lot to be desired. Perhaps their pizza would be better, especially since many other reviewers rave about their pizza. Overall, this was a complete miss for me unfortunately. I do hope they take this review to heart and improve by enhancing the dish one way or another, either adjusting the quantity of pancetta, adjusting the price, and/or tailoring its flavor profile, for I'm sure they have potential of being amazing. Went this evening no room for us to sit so we ordered a pie to go! The blonde woman, was visibly annoyed by our presence, she has the personality of a door knob. She kept staring at us annoyed by our presence. The man who made our pizza was lovely , he packed it up, gave us dishes to go, and rang us up as well. Pizza was very good. I think they need to hire another waitress, one without such an attitude. Some people , should not be in the front. Maybe in the back, away from customers. I've been hearing the pizza here is very good. My husband gets his haircut a few blocks away they ordered a margarita pie, which I love, he had a slice and he loved it! I was in the area so I stopped by. It was early 12pm which is when they open. It looks like a brick oven, wood fired oven. One of the workers took my order and made the pie. Very nice tables, clean, very comfortable place to eat if you're staying. My margarita pie was done and I took it home. Got home as fast as I could! The pizza was super good! Sauce was not bitter or too sweet, mozzarella was plenty and not too thin. They put a sprinkle of grated cheese and whole basil leaves on top. I will definitely be going back. They do make pasta pomodoro, I believe I saw carbonara and another one which escapes my old brain. Go there and have a great pizza, I recommend highly! We found this place a while ago and their menu was great!! They had great pizza and garlic knots.. best pizza we've had since moving to Tennessee .. one day we went back and it was under new management, we were disappointed but decided to try it. Not even close to what it used to be.. we waited months before giving it a try again.. I Went and ordered the pizza and garlic knots to go.. it was awful.. the knots were burnt and they poured oil and chunks of garlic all over them, no taste and oily.. the pizza was awful as well. All tasteless. Still 6yrs later haven't found a good pizza place. They should have kept the original recipe. read more

The Margherita was absolutely spectacular, made with a light, crust, crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. It was topped perfectly, not dry, perfect amount of sauce and cheese ratio. Small place with only 5 tables and no room to move. AI says they don't take reservations and it is first come first serve -it is mostly a takeout pizzeria. We entered and were told they had no more dough for large pies but would make small pies and we would have a long wait. We ordered and paid for 4 pies and 2 glasses of wine and 2 of my party stood inside at counter waiting until a table cleared up, and 3 adults and 6 kids waited outside. After waiting 45 minutes we grabbed 2 tables that freed up and a worker came at us like we were criminals. After 45 minutes our pizza was still not ready and we still didn't get our wine, and they claimed they didn't know we were waiting for tables! LOL! We ordered glasses of wine at a Pizzeria- were they going to package that to go? One of the workers was in my face asking me who I spoke with-i said my friend ordered 4 pies and 2 glasses of wine and we waited patiently for a table. The owner claimed someone had reservations and we had no right to the tables because we didn't make a reservation. When we got upset they threw us out. We were not rude, but we were confused so obviously were questioning them. How could they take an order 45 minutes earlier of 2 wine glasses and 4 pies and not think we wanted a table? My friend says she asked for a table when she ordered and they responded to take one when it frees up - they called her a LIAR and made personal attacks. It was Halloween and they were busy but no reason to be so rude to customers. And what pizzeria runs out of dough for large pies at 7pm! Don't BS me about needing reservations after I am waiting at the counter for 45 minutes after ordering 4 pies and 2 glasses of wine - I expect the people who took the table immediately when they just walked in were their friends and the owner lied about anyone having a reservation. I wish I could tell you how their pizza is but unfortunately I never tasted it. read more

I stopped into Apizza to grab some lunch. I ordered two plain slices, and I dined outdoors on an overcast day. My slices were fresh out of the oven, and very hot. I would say that the quality of their Pizza is good, but nothing spectacular. The 1980's freestyle soundtrack was a trip down memory lane. My bill with a bottle of water was $9.75. I ordered via Uber Eats. I was excited to try the Margherita pie but strangely my large pie had no basil on it. There was a lot of char on the crust and the bottom which gave some of it a burnt taste. I think the pizza had good flavor and I love the sourdough but my son won't let me order from here anymore. Love the place and the location, Crust is easily 10/10 excellent, the sauce is not good, too oily and heavy, and the cheese lacks flavor, its bland, fix those 2 things and you'll have the best pizza in the neighborhood! theres nothing like that around there. I really wanted to like this place based on previous reviews, so I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. I think their Sicilian pie is supposed to be a take on L&B's pie, but it was a huge miss. The salt was incredibly salty and greasy. The dough was so dense. I couldn't even get through an entire slice. Not sure if I would have been better off going to Krispy Pizza a few blocks down. On suggestion from my friend I tried this place. It was great. Crust was thin and crispy with a nice amount of char. Was surprised and impressed that it was done in a gas oven. My friend and I could have bet that it was coal but we were wrong. You could tell that chef Danial is passionate and thoughtful when it comes to the dough . He really nailed it's very unique to the area with a nice hint of tradition. Service is delightful and nice. Owner Andy is very down to earth. I have one suggestion and I don't want this taken the wrong way. The sauce needs a pinch of sweetness. That's my personal taste. I will say but it will not stop me from being a regular.
