Do you long for perfect dosas? Or do you not know what a dosa is: for the former, I have great news, for the latter, you have my pity. Apna Chaat Bhavan is an Indian grocery store -- really amazing array of lentils and legumes, pulses aplenty. But I'm not writing this to praise the grocery side -- though it is good. I'm writing to say that after years of searching for a sublime west coast dosa, it turns out that heavenly, crispy, crackling and almost charred perfection can be found in Beaverton. It's a cafeteria style restaurant, completely low key and mostly serving the local South Asian population. The menu is concentrated on South Indian cuisine -- the magnificent dosas, hyderabadi eggplant dishes . . . Really all fine. For me, I'll be going back for the dosas-- other dishes were good, but not going to order "good" when magnificent is on offer. If dosas are your thing, you owe yourself a visit to Apna Chaat Bhavan. This is Indian food prepared by Indians for Indians -- the cashier looked at me doubtfully and said "it's very hot you know" -- to my taste it was just right, but if bland is your thing, then this probably isn't your best choice. read more

An Indian coworker suggested me this place and I tried it out. My friend and I had the vegetarian thali and masala dosha and we loved both! The thali comes with a variety of dishes that change quite often, we went there 3 times and had 3 different thali. The dosha is really big and it's very good, very fresh and crunchy. It's gets really busy at lunch time, but they are pretty fast. There's a market next to it, where you can find a variety of Indian spices, snacks and foods in general. Bam!! Vegan options galore!!!! Super fun place!!! Super super authentic seeming! The place doesn't even smell like food! It has the strongest smell of incense! My nose and eyes were so confused, because there was fried food and curries flying off the counter! It's a market/cafe! It was nothing like I've ever been too! The guys at the counter were very clear and polite as to what vegan options were available to me!! I got some kind of tomato curry with potatoes!!! It was delightful!!!! I'm in the area a lot and will definitely be coming in more! It's always appreciated to have great food available on the fly when I'm starving! I love making excuses to drive way out to Apna Chat for spicy goat or chicken biriyani. While waiting for my order, I wander the adjoining market for hot-spicy Indian snacks, neem toothpaste, and giant bags of turmeric (for smoothies and facials). Frequently I am the only Caucasian in the shop/restaurant, and although I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb, I am welcomed and treated kindly. It's interesting reading the negative reviews on here. I just left Apna and when I got there, there was easily 10 people in line ahead of me. When I finally ordered, there were probably almost 20 people in line. Almost all appeared to be Indian. To me, that's a pretty good sign that I'm in the right place. And... once again... Apna Chat Bavan was awesome! I got the Chicken Biryani and Veggie Samosas. And DELICIOUS as always! Note to non-Indian folks: the food had a LOT of spice. I have always liked this place.. To get typical indian snacks like egg puffs, punugulu, molaga bajji and channa Samosa.. Their thali is good as well.. Yesterday I tried their egg fried rice and chilli chicken.. I have had the egg fried rice before, it tastes exactly like the road side ones you get back home and it was a safe bet! I was two minds about the chilli chicken, but then I went ahead and got it! It was so good I was surprised myself! The chicken well cooked with the spices spot on! Didn't like them much to begin with as they use lots of foam containers. Hopefully they will stop that soon. Thali lunch was ok but outdoor seating in summer made it fun. It's not a nicest setting tho but we are back for more because the amount of food here. For two adults and one kid we always ended up about 20 bucks a meal where else would be double. Plain Dosa with dippings is great starter. Recommend Mango Lassi is a must after their spicy chicken biryani. read more

All biriyani is over priced and less quantity of meat now compare to a few months ago. I am disappointed and this is NOT a fair business. I dont get the hype. This place is pretty expensive for the portions they give. A chicken biryani will have a single piece of chicken. The butter chicken is 13 dollars and the portion is tiny. The food was good, from what I could eat, it was really spicy! Ordered chicken biryani ( this was the spicy one) & Chicken Tikka Masala, ate the biryani first so I couldn't really taste the Tikka Masala. Also had their pastry --strawberry cake, went back twice just for this. read more

Our go-to spot for curry puffs (ACB has a good variety and they taste great) but these delicacies aren't always available. 2 out of 3 times, I guarantee they won't have what you want. We decided to check this place out after we found out that it was a new Indian fast food joint to try. My review is solely based on the good we tried- raj kachori and paneer tikka veggie. Raj kachori-- wasn't even a real raj kachori!! It was chole bhature with yogurt on top! It was too oily and spicy. Paneer tikka masala-- over-done paneer which was fried a tad bit Much, too creamy and bland. Too chaotic at the register and they need a better system to dispense orders. I think Portland has several amazing Indian food restaurants, but this one is a lot of fun and has several tasty options. A huge selection of entrees, appetizers, desserts, and snacks. Always a pleasant place for quick dine in or take out. Their chicken biryani is one of the best iv had in the US, their weekday lunch is delicious and reasonable priced. Their desserts/ Indian sweets are great. I could have given more stars The reason I am giving two stars is based on my last catering services. Even though I asked for mild, Chana Masala was so bad that we threw out in trash almost 70% of it. Never have I been to a business where they ran out of an item on their menu within 2 hours of being open. I understand if it was towards closing time.
