I like that you can get rice rather than fries if you are feeling in a healthy mood. I rate this place in the negatives. I'm a tourist here for just a day and I love Mediterranean food. I had it delivered to my hotel. The delivery boy was beyond rude and did not care. He was beyond late and couldn't find the hotel. He called my phone and I explained the differences slowly between the hotels and he hangs up in my face. That part of it was kind of ok, but to show up and snatch money out of my hand and walk out the door of my hotel lobby is totally uncalled for when all I did was explain the different between Fairfield Marriott and courtyard Marriott. Came back in after he seen me standing there waiting for my 20 dollars in change and had the nerve to ask for a tip. When I walk off he says loudly, UNBELIEVABLE. After just a few minutes the friendly man behind the counter sent a knowing yet stern point in my direction, which meant it was time to tuck into a hearty serving of waterlogged spanakopita and desiccated grape leaves. I love, love love their spinach pie! No-one else in town comes close to the lightness they have. And I love the strangely orange potatoes. Greek fires are really nice, too. Huge portions for the money. I know a girl who has relatives living in Greece. When they come to visit this is the only Greek food they'll eat, because it's authentic. I, too, am confused by the comments saying the service is "surly". No, they're not giggly or chatty or going to kiss ANYBODYS butt, but they're fast and accurate and totally serious about their restaurant. Which shows in the quality of their superb food. My experiences eating at Apollo Cafe has always been very good. The restaurant is always clean and well taken care of. The staff does a particularly good job taking care of the inside dining area as well as the outside dining area. The food has always been very good. I usually order the Gyro platter with fries and in my opinion it is the best gyro in the city. The portion size is enough to feed two people, if you order the platter with an extra pita. My recommendation is to eat right there at the restaurant. If the food is taken "to go" the pita gets saugy and meat dries out. I would recommend this over other popular greek food places nearby any day! read more

I am starting to realize that Apollo microwaves their to-go orders IN THE STYROFOAM containers. I don't mind their food being warmed up in the microwave, but not if it's being heated in the styrofoam to go box which releases carcinogens when heated. My dolmas were nearly melted into the box which is how I realized this was happening. I felt disgusted because my entire life it has been common knowledge to me to NOT MICROWAVE STYROFOAM. If Apollo continues to do this I will stop going here. It is not that hard to warm the food items up on a microwave-safe plate and then add them into the to-go container afterwards. :( read more

Great place for an easy, reasonably priced meal, either totally healthy, like their big Marouli salad, or totally over the top, like their enormous delicious gyro plate with Greek fries. This place has great food but the owners should not handle customers as they have lost touch with proper customer service techniques to keep business (every time I go there the place is empty). The husband and wife are both rude and argumentative to paying customers and I will not be going back for that very reason. Cant recommend anyone else go there either I have been ripped off on the prices also. Its a shame great location for me, walking distance. I will try their competition next time. read more

super rude, they messed my order, they gave me gyros instead of the chicken and instead of apologizing, the girl is arguing that i said gyros. and i ordered soup, the staff was like can we give it to you cold? i was thinking damn this guy is even lazy to heat up some soup. i said sure since i was ordering my food to go but was thinking wtf. and i asked for an extra two or three olives in my salad and the girl again was this has to be an extra charge. horrible customer service. Five stars for the delicious, addicting hummus. Probably the best hummus I've had. I crave this on the regular. They have a really good selection of food, great greek dishes, well priced. When returned, they came out a second time, with equal swiftness, cold and raw. Consistent they are, edible they are not. If you ask twice for no onions, assume you will instead receive a plethora of onion, even the base. And what's really inside of that white squirt bottle? Perhaps it's just coincidence they ran out of cucumbers and flavor on the same night. All the 5-star reviewers must've had one too many when they ate here. The chicken souvlaki was dry and hard. The olives and the pepperoncini literally tasted like dish soap. The gyro my husband ordered seemed to fair somewhat better (that earned the one star). The fries were basically sticks of grease and tasted as though the fryer oil hadn't been changed in days. I found myself in the Lower East Side for a haircut, but I had trouble finding the place. There was a nice man outside of the Apollo Cafe who I asked for help and he was extremely kind. This definitely made an impression and I returned there for lunch. The person taking orders was really patient with the fact that I kept butchering the names. I love mediterranean food and wanted a more authentic experience, so I really appreciated the Greek decor and Greek names of the dishes. I had the 1/2 Athenian Chicken (which was huge and delicious - perhaps a bit dry) with potatoes (was well seasoned, there was a good amount of potatoes, and also tasty). I also got a side of 2 Dolmathes (grape leaves wrapped around veggies/meat and rice). This all came with pita bread and (I believe??) what looked like homemade tzatziki sauce in your own personal bottle. It was a huge serving for around $12. There was so much that I packed the other half to bring home to eat. Not only were the portions generous and prices reasonable, the service was awesome. I saw from sitting there eating that they had great camaraderie with customers, truly cared about he people who went there to enjoy their food (like by getting to know where I came from) and remembering/chatting with the returners. Good spot when you're looking for authentic style Greek food or somewhere to eat after getting too drunk at the bar. They have lots of unique/traditional dishes on the menu and keep the American stuff to a minimum. One of the best patios in the city too. There's a definite fast-casual vibe here, but I do wish they would step-up the quality just a bit. At least lose the microwave and get a small commercial-grade convection oven. I eat at this restaurant at least once a month. We live close by, so more often than not we order for take out rather than eating in. I would love it if this place were a little more formal (a casual sit-down venue with servers would be ideal), but even so, they deserve a high rating based on fast, friendly service and consistently good food. First of all, I love to eat and cook, and I've eaten all over the state of Wisconsin in the cheapest to the most expensive restaurants. I needed to preface with that because THE APOLLO COMBINATION PLATTER IS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT MEAL IN WISCONSIN. This is somewhere I go, even though it is an hour away. Make sure you get their amazingly flavorful rice pilaf--it has minced grape leaves in it. I always get extra to take home for friends. I also want to tell anyone who loves coffee, especially if they like "Turkish" style coffee, that the Apollo's Greek Coffee is unlike any coffee I've had anywhere, and is my favorite coffee experience. As if all of that isn't enough, in my life I've encountered three other people who brought up that the Apollo was THEIR favorite restaurant in Wisconsin! One woman was at a wine tasting (she craves their lamb shanks), another is a student-chef (he loves their gyros) and another was a lawyer I met at a party who lives two hours from Milwaukee but sometimes travels there just to eat at the Apollo. It's decor is simple but artsy and really nice for lunch; its prices are very reasonable; its right on funky East Brady; it is a place you absolutely should try. Parking can get a bit congested in the area, but I've never had to walk more than a block. read more
