We stopped in one night for dinner, the restaurant wasn't busy, which was expected for a weekday night. The café has plenty of tables and a little bar area, and lots of Greek décor and videos to transport you to Greece. The servers were very attentive and pleasant. We ordered the Keftedes for an appetizer, they were so delicious! Well seasoned and the perfect crispy shell with soft pita bread. We also ordered the Zeus and the Lemon Baked Salmon. The Zeus was well seasoned and included lamb, pork, and beef in a pita. The Lemon Baked Salmon was a little to lemony for my taste but still good, I just wish I had something to cut the lemon flavor a little bit. Overall, the food and drinks were good, and would be back to try more. I did find the prices a little high for some items, including the drinks, some more worth it than others. read more

It's been a while since I last dined in. The dining room walls have been redone and tables are now lined with white butcher block and cloth napkins with nicer place settings. The menu is also updated with a new items. The food is still as good as I remember! The Beef Souvlaki has always been my go-to here, so I ordered it for lunch today. The beef cubes were well-seasoned as always and the pita was soft and delicious, as well. Even the fries were good. These were well-seasoned shoe string fries, and they were perfectly fried crisp. I couldn't stop thinking about the Grilled Octopus on the menu, so I ordered it, too, and asked chef to slice it for me. It was tender and served in olive oil with warm and soft pita. Sooooo good! A 6-top reservation came in while I was there. Yes, they accept reservations, which I believe you can book through their website. I've been coming here for years and seen different family members behind the counter or in the kitchen over the years, which adds to the charm of a small, family-owned business, and also shows I've aged. Stumbled upon this place by accident and I'm glad we did! Very clean restaurant with reasonable prices and good food! For appetizers we tried the spanakopita that was crispy on the outside and warm/creamy on the inside then covered in salty feta! We also tried their dips that were all great! This was today's restaurant to support so I stopped by for lunch because I wanted a gyro sandwich. The place is small with a nice bar in the back and you still can't eat in the place yet so I got take out. I ordered the gyro sandwich that was ready in about 7 minutes and I was on my way. The gyro sandwich comes with a sauce on the side and a small salad thing. The gyro sandwich was not the over stuffed kind like some places give you so you don't have to eat a bunch of meat from the top to start eating the sandwich but it's enough. The gyro sandwich also doesn't have tons of tomato's and onions like some places but once again just enough. The gyro sandwich has a little sauce already on the bottom but I used the little cup because a gyro needs to be drowned in sauce. The meat was flavorful and the pita was thin and nicely cooked. The sauce was pretty good that has a nice creamy thick texture, not the runny kind that drips out of the gyro like some places. Overall the gyro was good but it's not a gut buster like some places and it didn't replace my favorite gyro place. read more

We ordered a bunch of small plates, but the menu is a little pricey so go into it knowing that. We ordered the saganaki, tiropita, spanikopita, and Greek wings. The saganaki was by far my favorite! It was delicious and lemony, and the thin pita it came with was the perfect accompaniment. The Tiropita and Spanikopita are essentially the same except one is filled with feta and the other spinach. Both were solid in my opinion as well. The Greek wings really didn't do it for me - they were hard to eat, and there wasn't much flavor. The dipping sauce was delicious with the fries though. Overall it was about $70 for the four small plates. Would definitely go back for dinner with friends, it's a great option for those looking to share and try new things. read more

Delicious food! Came here for lunch with couple colleagues who really recommend this place. I was surprised that I hadn't come here yet. The decor was so interesting. They have simple table and chair and humongous Greek wall sculptures! Their food was good quality and service was super. As we entered the host attended us and got us seated right away. He got us water and asked us about any other beverage we would like (they had a deal on wine, but we couldn't avail as we were going back to work). Ouzo's menu has plenty of delicious options so some of us asked for recommendations. He recommended that the chicken was really good so I got the chicken shish kabob platter and I loved every bit of it. The chicken was extremely tender and cooked to perfection. The chicken skewer came with veggies and the platter had rice and pita. It was a good quantity as well. I felt like I ate a lot of good tasty grilled veggies. They taziki sauce was delicious as well. One of us got the lamb gyro and just by looking at it I could tell that it was going to be delicious! We had lunch at Ouzo while visiting Milwaukee. The food was fair - interesting sounding items, but small strangely seasoned and ungarnished portions at high prices. (The avgolemono soup tasted like lemonade and the octopus tasted like oregano bubblegum). When we returned home, I realized I'd left my credit card at the restaurant. I called and our server said I'd have to return in person (400 miles) to get it back. I asked to speak to the manager about an alternative, but he was too busy to talk to me. For three days and three more calls he remained too busy (uncaring) to talk to me, so we had to cancel our credit card and make all the account changes that entails. I recommend going to one of the other Greek food restaurants in the city, such as Mediterranean Cuisine a couple blocks away (and remembering to pick up your credit card). read more

I am straddling the line between 3-4 stars, but thinking further- a three is chosen. And being in Greece last year upped the ante for expectations. I really like the interior. It is cozy, romantically lit, and references Grecian statutes. Our server was pleasant but we were left with empty appetizer and entree plates longer than I would prefer to look at, and we had to ask for beverage refills. The Greek Trio appetizer was the best item tried. Three traditional spreads with soft, warm pita on the side. We all enjoyed mixing the options and liked the crunchy cucumber dividing the selection. The bacon gyro wrap was recommended- classic gyro but with bacon. It was underwhelming, and the side of Greek potato was bordering on over-salted. The Winchester burger was similarly sigh-inducing. There was no notable difference with the three meat patty and it was a little dry. The accompanying french fries were tasty though! If I return, I would try the Cafe Platter, hoping it follows in the steps of the traditional Greek spreads. Side note: their Ouzo list is long! Definitely living up to the forename! read more

This was my first visit to Ouzo. . . and I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed. I really WANTED to like it, and I still do want to like it -- and I definitely want them to succeed. I hope that they'll take this all as constructive criticism. In some respects, Ouzo could benefit from the rule of Less is More. . . except in those instances when More would be more! 1. I had the lamb chops. In this case, more would have been welcome -- because these wafer-thin chops, though basically enjoyable, were too little to justify the $39 price. On the other hand, less HEAT would have been welcome. Not spicy "heat"; cooking heat. My chops, ordered medium well, came well done. They were still acceptably tender, but any subtleties of flavor were lost. 2. Potatoes. I can only say that their firmness was a bit odd. Not exactly undercooked, and yet oddly too resistant to the fork in some places. But worse: They were overwhelmed by an unwelcome, and not-all-that-pleasant, rather sour sauce. (Lemon juice . . . but obviously, too much of it.) Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of sauce on roasted potatoes. With the right amount of understated seasoning, they can, and should, have a wonderful flavor without any further assistance. 3. Greek salad. The small one, packed with many great components (including big chunks of feta), was well worth the $6 price. However, again, Less would have been More. The whole thing was overwhelmed by far too much dressing. 4. Dessert (galaktoboureko): Very enjoyable, but again -- less phyllo dough, please! It's the custard, not the dough, that should be the main attraction. The ratio of custard to wrapping was far too low. 5. Coffee: Both of my cups were tepid. Guys, please figure out how to keep your coffee hot! 6. Ambience: Ouzo is a warm, cozy, tastefully (and unusually) decorated space. (Not a huge place, so I recommend getting a reservation.) Here, the rule of Less is More has been most obviously followed -- except for the welcome exception of the large female head on one wall near the ceiling (Athena?), and a VERY large horse's head on the opposite wall, also near the ceiling. Both of them groovily backlit in blue. There is a video screen above the bar area, continuously showing silent videos of scenic Greece. Although it's pleasant enough, in my view it detracts. Better, I think, to go with tasteful hand-painted mural scenes on the walls (which would be more in keeping with the overall feel of the place). I'm VERY tired of encountering TV screens wherever I go; if I want to watch TV, or anything on a screen, I can do that at home. It's not "getting away from it all" to find screens everywhere. Which brings me to the biggest disappointment (and unwelcome surprise) at Ouzo: a second TV screen, actually showing a TV program. OK, the sound was off, and I could see that it was the Food Network (get it?) . . . but still. Don't need that, don't want it, when I go out. (I was able to avoid seeing it, but only by choosing a small table near the window.) There are plenty of sports bars, especially these days in Milwaukee, where TVs are part and parcel of their clientele's wish to enjoy sports events in the company of others. (The food in those places is also cheaper than in places like Ouzo, where we pay top dollar for a DINING experience . . . an experience that includes ambience which, ideally, is different from what we can see every day at home.) I WILL return to Ouzo, and probably more than once (to try the Moussaka, Souvlaki and Gyro) . . . with hopeful expectations. read more

It always pains me to give a restaurant a low score but here we are. We had high hopes for Ouzo Cafe - we love Greek food, have traveled in Greece, and the menu seemed to be right up our alley. We were the only people in the restaurant this particular night. Is that the norm? We started with the hummus, something we love. This hummus was so-so. It wasn't blended enough so it wasn't very smooth and there was an acrid, burnt taste. It doesn't help that we have had the best hummus ever (Farid Restaurant, Los Angeles) - Ouzo Cafe's just isn't great. My son had the gyro and thought it was quite dry. I had the lamb shank. It was quite fatty; I left almost half of the "shank" on the plate because it was all fat. This was definitely not worth $38.00. My husband opted for the beef souvlaki and found it to be quite dry and lacked flavor. Service was slow - we waited nearly 40 minutes before any food came to the table. No one ever offered to refill our water or asked if we'd like another beverage. When we sat down my son and I specifically told our server we were looking forward to dessert but at the end of our entrees we were handed a check and never offered dessert. I was looking for a good authentic gyro sandwich when I found Ouzo Cafe. The pictures depicted quality food that looked fresh and authentic. Yet, it was very lackluster and we even had to send one dish back to the kitchen. Not to mention it was completely empty of customers the entire time we were there which says something in itself. The crab cakes tasted & looked like something from Resturuant depot, not authentic or fresh. The lemon drop martini tasted much like rubbing alcohol and I experienced some unpleasant effects from the quality of the vodka in it. The gyro was what I had wanted the whole time and the only good thing about the sandwich was the Tzatziki sauce. Very greasy and flavorless meat. The best part about the experience was the server. The first time I've had just tzatziki as an appetizer - it was really delicious here! Yum to the Yum! It was served with pita, but we asked for some fresh vegetables, as well (cucumber, tomato, green pepper) which was great - who needs just bread? Although, the pita was grilled off and quite yummy, too. The wine was recommended by the person cooking, who was also out at the bar at times. He was pleasant. Anyways, he said the drier white greek wine that he liked best was the Retsina -- so I went with that and even had a couple more after that because I really liked it. Definitely a different type of flavor. It was strange literally no one else came in to eat besides my friend and I -- oh, and one to go order. So odd, where does Milwaukee disappear to on Monday nights?! Apparently this place gets nuts on Saturday nights, as they continue to serve until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays! Cray they are still serving food that late and also, good to know. The inside reminded me of the size of restaurants in NYC, small and compact. Which is fine with me! For my meal, I ordered the keftedes, spicy greek meatballs, and rice as a side. I liked that it came with lemon, that I made sure I was supposed to squeeze onto the meatballs (I've never done that before so was hesitant) but after I did, it was great! The meatballs did have a little kick, as described. The red tomato sauce on the rice was really flavorful on first bite, salty on the second bite, but since it's over white rice, that's why it needed the heavier salt and seasoning. More of the amazin tzatziki and pita came on the side, which it was great but it would be good for people ordering to know it is also going to come with the meal. I'd probably order a different appetizer than to get another side of it with my entree. So, maybe ask what is all going to come on your entree ahead of time if you want more of a variety. The service was great from the cook but the regular bartender/server was oddly intimidating and standoff-ish. And, I am not one to get intimidated easily, so for me to say that... anyway as mentioned we were the only customer and I don't think he wanted to be there serving us. Sorry? Should we leave? I'm not going to reflect it in my review because I think this place deserves some positivity for the other person who was more pleasant (even though I think it's cause he had the hots for my friend - so not sure if that was genuine, I'll give the benefit of the doubt) and the food. Good gyro. Decent service. Very quiet. It seems like I keep picking restaurants that are dead on Monday nights. When I popped into Ouzo, I was the only customer in there. I really was tempted to turn around and go somewhere elsewhere but I stayed. Sweet waitress (18 years old??) took my drink order (a Greek beer called Mythos) and then my food order. I asked for the gyro meal with rice (they were out of the potatoes) plus a side salad. The salad was mostly lettuce but there were four big cubes of delicious feta cheese that made it worthwhile. As for the gyro, it was a nice sized pile of sliced donner meat topped with raw onions, a small pot of tzatziki sauce (the gal brought me another when I asked) and a very meaty slice of tomato. All on top of a grilled pita bread. I cleared the plate. Yum! On a hot day, I wouldn't recommend Ouzo. Their air conditioning was on the fritz. Maybe sit outside and watch the street traffic go by. The service was outstanding, the food came quickly and everything tasted amazing. I typically order the lamb gyro but was curious to try the chicken gyro and with the recommendation of our server, I was convinced. The grilled chicken was flavorful and it exactly what I was hoping for. I tried to save room for baklava but I was stuffed! I've been to Ouzo many times over the years and I've never walked away disappointed. Today's service stood out a bit more as he was attentive, friendly and took the extra time to explain a couple things to my friends, who had never been here before. I am a huge fan of Mediterranean fare and more specifically, Greek is my favorite of the cuisine. We went to Ouzo for dinner to check out what they had to offer. Service - We arrived early evening on a weekday and there were a handful of patrons already there. As we walked in we were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. Our host brought us to our seats and provided us menus and the specials. She also took drink orders from us. Our sever was friendly and provided some suggestions and answers to questions we had about a couple things. Throughout the meal we were well taken care of as well. Atmosphere - Ouzo is on North Milwaukee along the street. The store front is all glass and while it is a smaller restaurant it does not feel cramped. There is ample table space and during warmer months they have outdoor seating as well. The space has high ceilings, a bar a light airy atmosphere. It seemed like a cafe you would head into while traveling around various parts of Europe. I felt comfortable and welcome which is a key to a good atmosphere. Value - I went with a gyros plate, the gyros were good overall. I enjoyed but was not blown away. I have been to several different Greek cafes traveling around and I would put Ouzo in the top 1/3 of them. Location - located on North Milwaukee it is near a handful of other restaurants in downtown Milwaukee. We have walked down this street many times while traversing our home town. I love walking in this area and contemplating our next meal. On this night Ouzo was our destination. Rating - I will rate Ouzo on a scale of one to give hummus platters. I give Ouza 3.5 hummus platters. The food was good not great. I will go back again to check them out but they are on the list not the top of the list. read more

I'm not sure what happened. Looking at some older pictures I was concerned I wasn't even in the same place. The fries were different. Portions small. Horrible Greek wine that no one seemed to know what it would taste like and couldn't even handle more than one sip. The hummus wasn't the best. The Tzatziki was yogurt. No cucumber, no flavor, nothing but straight Greek yogurt. I asked for 2 hoping it would help make my horrible experience a little better. NOPE I will say the chicken in pita was nice. Spicy was a nice touch. No matter how good that wrap was though I'll never go back. There are too many GREAT places to go to in Milwaukee to over pay here. Late night gyro time! After a long day of celebrating my cousin's wedding, we celebrated some more! However, after we celebrated the celebration, we got hungry. Luckily, just across the street was Ouzo Cafe! I find it hard to pass up Greek food, and with the night winding down, we had doubts about finding anything else. So we took a chance on Ouzo, and we weren't dissapointed. The location was set up for mostly carry out and quick sit down service. At the end of the narrow table area stood the counter and the open area where they prepare the food. We browsed the menu briefly, but I knew what we were there for, the gyro! Being so late, we decided to split a gyro combo, which ran about eight dollars. Most of my family followed suit, but some tried the burgers, too. The clerk was super friendly and patience. However, we beat the late night crowd, so there wasn't any reason to feel rushed. Everything came out hot and fresh. The fries were on fire! The toppings, aside from the onions, came on the side. Even the tzatziki sauce was in a separate container, so I just dipped my gyro meat in it, instead of covering my sandwich. I don't know where this sandwich ranks on the list of gyros that I've loved before, but I truly enjoyed it. The service was good, and the food wasn't too expensive. I'd probably give Ouzo 2.5 stars but the food was good so I'm rounding up. Ouzo is probably a great spot to grab a gyro after you've been partying it up at one of the other relatively mediocre Milwaukee Ave. spots. My visit was at lunch though and it was "ok". First, the inside is fairly basic. I really like the large plaster decorations - they add some unique Greek flair to what is a fairly sterile and very well worn space. The tables and chairs are fairly beat up and could stand a good scrubbing. Food-wise, I was mostly happy with what we had. The person I was with had much love for her gyro and I did like my chicken kebab (though it was a little dry). The tzatziki sauce here is amazing though - wonderfully creamy and garlicky. Portions are ok - if you're having a sandwich it will cost $2 or so extra for fries. If you want to upgrade to a salad, it's like $3 on top of that, which is a little ridiculous. Service was super, super slooooooowwwww. I felt bad for the only server who also appeared to be helping with the cooking and handling all of the cold prep on items. Maybe a server called in? I don't know, but it took forever to get our order taken and an absolute age to get our food. That may be fine in the evening, but when you're having a lunch meeting you're looking to keep things moving along. Overall, I liked what I had but was fairly turned off by the slow service, chipped/scratched tables and chipped plates (ugh - unsanitary!). It's certainly a viable & inexpensive option if you're drunk on Milwaukee Street. However, Oakland Gyros or Apollo aren't far away, so it would be hard for me to justify a return visit. read more

If you want authentic Greek then come here! The food is absolutely delicious. The best hummus & pita dish I have ever had. I seriously was impressed with Ouzo's, from the minute I walked in until hours later when I walked out the door... just couldn't get enough! The place itself is impressive with the Greek decor throughout the whole establishment. They offer a full bar and great staff. The best part is you could come here for lunch, dinner, just for a drink, date night, a night out on the town, or even for a shuttle to the Brewer's game in their Ouzo Cafe shuttle bus. BRING YOUR YIAYIA! This food was THE BEST greek food I have had since going to Greece! The gyro was to die for, their moussaka was delicious and had this warm fall tasting spice to it. They make fresh pasta! The tzatziki was refreshing. The hummus, oh my the hummus! Please if you go get the hummus it does not disappoint! They have greek wine which was also amazing! Its a small personal experience and is a wonderful restaurant to gather with family and special occasions. We celebrated my brother's graduation and they were such great hosts/ hostesses! So I was trying to find a place for dinner last night, the first two I went to we're booked. Man am I glad they were!! I stopped in Ouzo Cafe and it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in years!! I had wine and apps at the bar it was great! I spent some time talking to the bartender Josh and the owner Frank they were great! I've never had octopus like that before, just melts in your mouth. The whole thing was a blast. Me and my boyfriend order ouzos on saturdays, we really enjoy the food and the quality, the chicken kabob and the rice with grilled veggies is authentic and tasty, more greek than american, we also get the beef skewers well done with salad and cheese, delicious, just a recommendation, the sauce poured on top of the chicken is very citrus.
