Dinner on a Saturday night in a place where I had spent many and after bar in my 20s. The food is still just as good as I remember I love their in-house made tzatziki sauce. I always mix mustard, ketchup, and there's tzatziki for my fries which still tastes as good as it was so long ago. Nasty attitude from worker. This was a really great place to come at. The service used to be great just like its food. The menu is still good. The place is pretty chill so you can dress casual. I had an issue today with one of persons taking orders over the phone and more issues when I came in to pick up the order. I was ordering what I used to constantly ordered a Gyro Plater Pepper Styler. It's gyro with a few extra veggies and sauce. I was being lectured by a girl working that I'm lier and they never served that and they don't have that on the menu and there's no way I would've had that at this location and I need to stop lying about it and so on. I told her she's wrong for it and I have no problem just purchasing the order as it but to call me and tell me all of that is wrong since I have pictures posted of me ordering and eating that at this location. While we've ordered from Oakland Gyros before, this time we decided to place an order through Doordash. The predicted ETA was 25-40 minutes, but it came even faster than that. My husband and I both got the Gyro Sandwich, but I also requested sides of feta, olives and pepperonchini. As always, the meat portions were generous, but I was surprised that the sides were too. We were there last night. We got the Gyro sandwich. Let me tell you all the good things about our experience. Very flowing with the ice water. Decent amount of meat. Tasted good. Very clean restaurant and well lit. Let me mention the things I didn't like. Uneven cut slices, thin and thick. Meat not hot. Should have been on the grill or if it was on the grill should have been longer. Pita bread did not hold together, broke in my hand. But the most disappointing was the sauce. Not seasoned or flavored enough. It tasted too much like plain yoghurt. Definitely not like a Nicky's Gyros in Calumet City IL which I know is the best Gyro IN THE WORLD. The service is good, you order at the counter and they call your food when it's ready. Best place for late night food in Milwaukee. They got gyros, cheese fries, an excellent spanikopita, & killer greek salad, along with yummy shakes & other stuff you find at a lot of greek restaurants in the area. The location is a cornerstone of East Side/UWM nightlife, & you will meet a lot of interesting folks waiting in line. The Greek salad and Gyros are both tasty, with generous portions. Staff is friendly and attentive. I have one mild criticism and one serious objection. 1. The Gyro is served on a too-small pita bread for the amount of meat . . . and the difficulty and sloppiness of eating it is compounded by the fact that all of it is crowded onto a too-small paper "boat". Larger pita bread should be given, and the whole thing should be served on a plate large enough to make eating all of it easier. 2. I am now going to SLAM them for using plastic utensils. Fast and informal counter service is no excuse for not using reusable, real, metal forks and knives. No business in 2024 should be cranking out the shameful amount of plastic that this business is. I bought gyros sandwiches at the layton avenue location many times over the last 15 years. The last 2 occasions that bought them over the last 3 weeks the sandwiches have been mediocre. The meat on the sandwich was excellent, the pita was good but the lack of onions and tomatoes on the sandwiches was a real disappointment. The combination of ingredients is what makes this sandwich delicious. My sandwiches on the last 2 purchases had 2 pieces of onion and a single piece of tomato. This really made the experience significantly below their usual quality. I am not sure if this is the result of inexperienced sandwich makers or them skimping on ingredients due to cost concerns or another problem. I only hope that someone in authority can do a random quality check on the product being sent out to the customer to ensure standards are being met. We drive up from Racine to get the sandwiches and have historically felt the product was worth the drive. The last 2 times have been real disappointment. Hope this helps as constructive criticism. If it happens again we will not be back. It has been said that restaurant customers do not generally do not leave constructive feedback and just do not repatronize the establishment. I am leaving this note to help improve your quality to previous standards. This is not in the restaurant but takeaway through the drive through. When you get home and open a disappointing sandwich it stink. This comment is to help not to disparage. Came there with my son after a Buck's game with the temperature being about 4 degrees outside. I have eaten at quite a few Chicago Greek restaurants and all just so well run. This was my first time there and this place did not disappoint me. The owner right there taking order as you came in and chatting with the clientele. The food? So good. The pita bread was made right there (not out of a plastic bag) and really made it unlike any other gyro I've had. They still have good prices after all these years and it is one of the best people watching spots in all of Milwaukee, because you get every kind of person coming in here, from the rich theatregoers, to the poor street-dwellers to everything in between. Lots of hot people in here on Friday and Saturday nights and they're open until the middle of the small hours of the morning it seems. It can be pretty freezing outside and parking can be hard to come by, but when you come in here and get some of the best Gyros in the country as well as some really good quality and large-portioned Greek salad you will be so glad that you did. Sometimes these late-night drunk places are bad or mediocre or overrated because of drunk people. Not in this case. When it comes to Oakland Gyros it is worth the hype and it is worth more than the hype, for that matter. I have to thank my friend Bill, from the old old days, and his beau Lisa, from a little town called Cedarburg, who brought me here a long time ago. The gift they gave me turned out to be one of the absolute best Gyro shops in the country and very easily five stars. Notably, significantly better than the other locations of Oakland Gyros, as some things were lost in transition. As good as Nick's (Atlanta), Gyro World (on Northern in Queens), Best Gyros (Cleveland), and your other faves around the country. Come here and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. It is every bit as good as any Gyro fan could dream it would be. If I could give six stars I would. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time and it did not disappoint. I am a New Yorker originally and this place reminded me of those old school Greek diners. Old men behind the counter quickly processing orders, cooks in full view grinding away, and the process was seamless and quick. 4 stars for the gyro. It's fairly spacious inside and they have clear marked signs for waiting and take out. The veggie gyro is basically all ice berg lettuce so don't get that if that's not your jam. The regular meat one is jam packed with meat so it's amazing. It seems that they get a lot of regulars that come in and that's the vibe I very much so enjoy. The hours here are amazing. Like that's prop the best part is finding a place that opens so late. They lose 1 star based solely on my interactions with the cashier / pick up. It's very unwelcoming or maybe just neutral business hello order and be done. Had the gyros platter this time, which is a huge serving of gyros meat atop lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cukes and pepperoncini and a big piece of pita bread. I love that they give you a squeeze bottle of yogurt sauce, so you can put as much or little on your food as you wish. Service is fast-casual, your number is called when your meal is ready.
