We found this very honest and quality shop, one of the few places servicing vintage stoves, to be a lucky find. Our chromed stove top was sorely in need of replacement and a tune up. We had looked around for a replacement stove when we discovered that the Apple Stove folks would do it all and for a better price than the alternatives. The stove top was returned to us in beautiful shape but after a year or so we noticed that the chrome was peeling in a few places. We hadn't bothered to ask about the warrantee period, but it turns out that it had passed. Nonetheless, this mom and pop shop which meets its customers needs through a sub contract, took responsibility for this and had it chromed again without any additional cost and provided a loaner stovetop while the work was being done. I own a 1950 O'Keefe & Merritt that I purchased from a cousin in 1972. It has been an incredibly functioning appliance. But last year I noticed that the oven took forever to preheat. I have a vintage 1950's style wedgewood stove. I wanted to have the manifolds (inner parts of the burners) cleaned up & restored. As a lifelong East Bay resident I was happy to an East Bay company to do the work. I was quoted a price & time frame for that work. I dropped 2 out of my 3 manifolds off knowing it would take 6 weeks and paid in full for the work. This was on 4/19/22. It is now 10 weeks later and I still don't have my manifolds. I keep getting excuses. At first the company they send them out to were behind. Now Apple Stoves somehow missed UPS each time they attempted to deliver & UPS sent them back. Honestly I can't believe this is how a business is run. I have only 1/3 of a functional stove and no clue when or where the rest of the pieces are. DO NOT USE APPLE STOVES unless you have no concerns as to when the work gets done. If you have all the time in the world, and you're ok with the staff at Apple Stoves not caring that they can't keep to their own time frame, then this is the company for you. He explained each stage of the procedures he recommended, conducted numerous safety checks along the way, invited me to watch him at work, and finished the job on time and within a few dollars of his estimate. Details: We have a gorgeous 1950s O'Keefe & Merritt that we were preparing to retire, but discovered that a modern replacement would cost many thousands of dollars and involve a 3-12 month wait, plus an expensive electrical upgrade to our (1940s) house. After much soul-searching we opted to repair what we have and I do not for a minute regret that decision. It looks great, works great, and our concerns about safety have been resolved. I had Apple stoves come some distance to repair my 1930s Wedgewood stove. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Christopher was so knowledgeable and patiently repaired everything. The oven door was being held up with a bungee cord, my broiler drawer was off its runners, and one of my burner knobs stopped at 2 o'clock instead of straight up at 12 o'clock. I honestly didn't think it was repairable. I had actually been shopping for other stoves, but I wanted to give one last effort. Apple stoves traveled from Oakland down to Santa Cruz two days after I requested service. Christopher spent several hours repairing my lovely stove and amazingly, it is now as good as new with new springs and hinges for the door, the runners for the broiler drawer were repaired as was the burner knob. Last Thursday PG&E came out and turned off all the pilot lights on my late 1950's Gaffers & Stattler gas stove as neither they nor I could get the rotisserie or oven pilots to light. I contacted Apple Stoves the next day and spoke with Laura who told me their closest available appointment was a week away. I made the appointment and she let me know that if she could get someone out sooner she would. I didn't count on it, but within the hour Chris called me to see if he could fit me in his schedule any earlier. He came out Monday at 9, adjusted all the pilot lights and unclogged the gas line to the oven to get the oven pilot up and running. I recommend Apple Stoves for great customer service and highly competent repairs at a reasonable cost. read more

We have a retro stove Occidental, probably a late 40s or early 50s model that comes with the property. When PG&E gas technician came to inspect all the gas appliances he wrote up some safety concerns. He recommended to hire a contractor to fix the griddle burner which is not firing up, possible gas leak and the rigid gas pipe at the back of the stove. Since we have a home warranty insurance, I filed a claim to get the stove repaired. My husband and I went back and forth with the insurance company for 17 days, went through 3 of the insurance company's contractors, 2 rejected the job immediately and 1 accepted the job but later found out they are not able to fix the issue. Finally we have to escalate the claim to the President Office of the insurance company and got approval to seek for outside contractor assistance. On April 22, I researched on the web and Yelp and found Bay Stoves, the owner Gabe is very knowledgeable and understands the issues but he is all booked up until mid May. Gabe graciously recommended Apple Stoves to me. I am so glad I contacted Apple Stoves on April 24. Laura returned my call within the same day and we exchanged pictures of the stove and I explained the issue. Laura is going to send a technician out immediately but at that time I am stuck in the home warranty insurance claim process and cannot hire her service. I explained to her and she is very understanding and wishes the best for the insurance assigned contractor. Finally we got approval from the insurance company on May 7 to seek outside contractor and submit for reimbursement. I called Laura on the same day and was able to schedule an appointment for May 10 between 2-4pm with Chris. Chris came at 1:20pm and worked on the stove - changed out the rigid pipe to a safe flex line, changed out the old hard to turn switch to a new gas switch, fixed the griddle burner that was not firing up, detected burner gas leak on the right burner and fixed it, cleaned out the burners and greased the knobs and checked that the oven works well. Chris completed the work around 3:30pm. And Chris mentioned we can cook yummy pancakes on the griddle now, super excited. Laura and Chris are very professional, knowledgeable and communicate very well. Definitely recommend their service to whoever seeking retro gas stove repair. Thank you. read more

Chris came out, fixed all the leaks and even managed to take a burner that wasn't working home to work on in his spare time. He came back to reinstall and did not like the level of flame, so did not charge me while he did further research on how to improve. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Avoid this business!!! I called Apple Stoves last month when my Wedgewood needed a repair. Some years back I had called them when my oven door needed an adjustment. At that time they were the only place I could find who could work on my Wedgewood Stove. They were 45 minutes to an hour away. They were also top notch and not only repaired the door but educated me about things I didn't know about my stove, which has been in my family since 1949. The repairman was very knowledgeable, efficient and professional. Unfortunately this is no longer the case! Fast forward to last month. Suddenly the pilot light was not engaging to the oven. PG and E came out and shut the oven off. I again called Apple Stoves and noticed they had moved. It seemed they may have traded hands. Greg Fisher came out. He came into the kitchen and set his toolbox on my kitchen island (hand finished wood). He asked after he placed it there if it was okay. I quickly grabbed a few place mats to put under it. He seemed like a nice guy and I was happy to be getting my oven fixed. While he worked I was busy handling a business call. He told me the oven was fixed after around 20 minutes. I was somewhat surprised when he said he had "checked the stove over" as well. I had no idea what he had done and he never explained it. He began to chat about everything but the stove and once he began he didn't stop. He shared he was "very wealthy" and that he didn't have to work. At some point I began to realize that Gregg was a bit unusual and it was uncomfortable. I wasn't frightened of Greg but I wanted him to leave since he was done. I made a mental note that next time, if there was one I would make sure someone else was home also. Greg then added figures up on his calculator and told me charges were $260. When I asked about this he explained "any minutes over 30 were charged as another 30 (?)". He asked that the check be made out to him personally, not the company. He began talking about many personal issues that were inappropriate to speak to a stranger about. After he left I realized he had not left a receipt on the table. Things became a bit strange when I requested a receipt and texted the job address and he texted back he needed my address (?). The receipt finally came weeks later and didn't have any information on it except "labor". Around this same time I used the oven for the first time to bake some potatoes for dinner. After an hour I went to take them out and they were warm (not hot) and not cooked. I emailed Apple Stoves since they guarantee their work within 30 days. Greg left me a message and I called him back. He answered and began to ask me who did the repair(?). I said I recognized his voice and he had done it. He then seemed to recall the job. He also explained he did the repair and the oven temperature was a separate issue. As we spoke I understood he had never checked the oven to see if the temperature was alright. He suggested over the phone I trouble shoot the stove with him and I declined. He then told me to go to a hardware store and purchase an oven gauge. He suggested I call him back and tell him what the gauge said since he didn't want to drive over. Travel time is charged and it is not cheap. I questioned what he was saying and tried to ascertain if he would honor the 30 day policy. When I asked who owned the company, he said he did. He began to suggest he would not honor the policy and he said he fixed what he was suppose to. The oven has never had a temperature problem. Gregg than became overtly rude and said he remembered the job because I "talked over him". I just got a very creepy feeling and stopped talking entirely. When he was done talking on and on I told him I appreciated his advice and ended the call. I never want to talk to this man again much less hire him! The fact is to even ask a question you have to interrupt Greg's constant nonstop talking about himself and his life. I wasn't sure what to do because I was still under the impression that Apple was the only local company to work on Wedgewoods. I was delighted a friend of ours referred us to a local company closer by who can service our stove! AVOID APPLE...TOO EXPENSIVE AND JUST UNPROFESSIONAL! read more

PLEASE DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. This business is a ripoff. Laura only talks to you until you pay, and Greg doesn't care because he's "a millionaire". I bought a O'keefe and Merritt from these folks. They were to recondition and restore the stove. They didn't disassemble the stove, they didn't clean the stove, they didn't replace the old insulation and the rewiring was a nightmare. When we went to see their "finished product" after many weeks, my wife almost started crying, that's how bad it was. When the drawers didn't shut right, Greg advised me to kick it shut, "like a 56 Chevy". Once installed, the stove looked okay, just okay, certainly not what we were expecting. While baking cookies, my granddaughter burned her knee when it got to close to the oven door. I thought that was not right so after it cooled, I opened the door to check the insulation. The insulation was minimal at best. I used a stove thermometer to check the temperature on the outside. When the internal temperature is 350 the outside temperature on the doors and sides was 200 degrees. On further investigation, I opened the back and sides of the stove. They never removed the old fiberglass insulation, it was still on the stove, this also means they never really took the stove apart to clean it. I took the stove further apart only to find more grease and grime from years of use. They never scraped the rust off, removed the grease or bothered to hide the fact that they never touched the panels of the stove. I have since taken my stove to another antique stove professional and the difference is night and day. I wish there was space to show pictures of what Apple did and what this other company did. Believe me, the pictures on the Apple web site are NOT their finished product. I now have a beautiful functioning stove I am very proud of. Most people would never know these things because they would never take their stove apart. So beware, if you bought or had something done by Apple, please have it checked by someone other than them. They don't deserve even one star.... PLEASE DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. read more

We had a very mixed experience with Apple Stoves. The good: They fixed the leaking gas in the Wedgewood in the home we just bought and replaced a cracked pane of glass in our electric oven. The bad: their guy left a mess both times he came. I wiped up the black fingermarks - after all, he was very competently fixing our stove. However, we were less happy when we noticed that when he put together our oven, the central pane of glass in the oven door (sealed between the outer and inner panes) was covered with dust and smudged fingerprints. I caught him heading up the driveway and asked if he wouldn't mind opening it up again so that we could wipe it down.... and he politely declined! I asked if he thought it was something we could do ourselves and he raised an eyebrow and said "well, probably not - it is pretty hard to take that thing apart. I guess I should have wiped it down before i closed it up." I was pretty speechless. I know that this is not the central part of the service they offer, but sometimes it is the little things that count. Now every time we open the door to our oven we will think of Apple Stoves - but maybe not so fondly. read more

I should have read the filtered reviews first. The following is my complaint filed with the BBB. Apple Stoves has an F rating. Apple Stoves was contacted because I smelled gas in our kitchen coming from our vintage Wedgewood Stove. I suspected a leak in the flex hose - which I told service person upon arrival on January 28th. Service person used a tester to check the hose and said that there was no leak. I was shown the tester and that it did not register a leak. Service person proceeded to test around the stove knobs and said that they needed cleaning/oiling. My initial bill for this 'repair' was $130. The first hour was billed at $90/hour which is $1.50/minute. Service person proceeded to take multiple phone calls while billing me at this rate. A gas leak odor was still evident after this appointment. The oven worked one time after the Apple Stove service, then the pilot light went out and could not be re-lighted. On February 1 the Apple Stoves service person returned and cleaned the valves for the oven. When I tried to open the oven door after this visit, it was torqued out of alignment and the handle to the door was loose. I paid $90 for this second appointment. A gas leak odor remained after this appointment. On February 9th PG&E made an emergency service call. They immediately pinpointed the leak in the flex hose and used the soap/water test to verify, and to show me where it was located in the line. The PG&E service person told me that there is always a very small gas emission around the valves on these old stoves and that it is not hazardous. I purchased a new flex hose which had to be installed and the pilots re-lighted. I paid a contractor working at the house to do this. On February 14th the Apple Stoves service person was to come between 11:00 and 11:30 to tighten the oven door handle. At 11:45 they had not arrived. I called; they needed to re-schedule. A second appointment was made for the evening of the same day (February 14th) at 5:30. At 6:15 I called - service person had forgotten the appointment. At this point I never wanted Apple Stoves to do anything at my home again. On February 18th PG&E returned to check the new flex hose and pilots. The hazard tag was be removed. Our home had a dangerous gas leak which Apple Stoves, equipped with a gas detector, insisted did not exist. Isn't there a requirement that service people dealing with gas stoves have working leak detectors and be supervised by a licensing agency? I wrote to Apple Stoves, detailing my complaint, several times with no response. Finally I received a letter at the end of June, stating that they needed two weeks to review my complaints. It is now the end of August, two months later and I have heard nothing back from them. read more

My wonderful and extremely vintage O'Keefe & Merritt trash burning gas stove was getting crochety. Then it stopped wokring altogether. Apple had fixed it in years back so I was a bit nervous when their phone was disconnected. However they were on line and sent a fellow over immediately. He made it work in time for a cooking class I was hosting plus it now works beter than ever. Another good sign; he was a younger fellow who had appreticed with them for several years. I called Apple Stoves because of gas leaks and my 1950's oven wouldn't work. I am impressed by several things: -Gregg is a solid nice guy. He did things like give free advice on how my husband could fix the stove himself and save us money. -If my stove was un-fixable, I could take the cost of the labor and put it on a stove in their store. -He was willing to drive 30 miles out to my place. -He found my gas leak. I would've liked to give five stars, except for one thing: -He didn't technically fix my oven. (To Gregg's defense, he didn't charge me for the four full hours he was at my house.)
