I took pride in having never been to an Applebee's in my life. But that changed on Saturday, October 20th 2023. My girlfriend's mom gave her an Applebee's gift card because "she doesn't eat Applebee's." And neither did we, but we had a gift card and didn't want to waste it so we thought it would be "fun" to see what all the hype (or rather, apathy) is about. We got there around 8:30 on Saturday night. Immediately when we walked in there was a crowd of people waiting for their tables - a party of ~8 and a party of 4. After a few minutes of waiting the large party was seated and we were able to talk to the server - we could sit at the bar now or wait 20 minutes for a table (the restaurant was maybe 25% full, they were just short staffed), and we chose to sit at the bar. Now it seems that many people come to Applebee's for their Dollaritas - Neither I or my girlfriend are big drinkers but for a dollar we had to try it. They were surprisingly good; probably because for only a dollar the alcohol percentage is low and therefore the drink ends up being mostly sweet. We ordered a 2 for $30 with onion rings as an appetizer, and entrees of an Applebee's riblets plate and broccoli chicken alfredo. Onion rings came out in about 10 minutes. Pretty standard, nothing to point out about them. 20 minutes later our entrees came out. Again, very standard, nothing much to praise or complain about. I think my riblets could have used more sauce, and the breadstick that came with the chicken alfredo didn't come out until my girlfriend had finished eating. We had to wait a little while after finishing our food to pay, because our waitress was really busy behind the counter. Normally I would be a bit annoyed about the long waits, but she was manning the bar by herself in a college town, she deserved any grace she could get. She was also super sweet by putting in 2 extra Dollarita orders for us just in case - Dollaritas cost $3 after 9, and by putting in the orders early they would only cost us a dollar. We did end up ordering one more and she removed the extra one from our tab, saving us $2. Our total ended up being around $40. Applebee's was a lot more decent than I had expected. Definitely on the expensive side for the quality and amount of food you get, especially when there are SOOOOOO many amazing restaurants in Harrisonburg, but definitely better than a microwaved meal. Will I ever go back? No, unless I am somehow the unfortunate recipient of an Applebee's gift card. read more

I was blatantly called a "Sir" by the server then talked about by both the hostess, and server as if I was not sitting at the table. When I addressed the hostess she unapologetically said he "made a mistake and was talking to me maybe he didn't realize you were there. I have been to many of Applebee's restaurants and have never felt so disrespected and humiliated. I appreciate management's efforts trying to rectify the problem but a"free meal" would clearly not compensate how I felt. read more

John Cranberry here. I went to Applebee's with my lady before we saw the movie, "Nosferatu" back in January, and let's just say, the film wasn't the scariest thing I saw that day. To start off, the place was practically empty, with only a couple of older folks getting their early bird specials. It took us 5 minutes to be seated and while our waitress was a very kind lady, what came next wasn't. I ordered my steak medium rare and before I even SAW the inside of it, I knew I made a mistake. It shook the table every time I attempted to cut into it and the inside of it was so brown it looked like it had already been digested. This place truly took the joy out of eating. read more

Just don't bother. At 12:30 on a Friday afternoon & no one is here; you should wonder why. Our breadstick appetizer would give you high blood pressure due to the amount of salt. That's probably because they have no taste whatsoever. I never received my order, a Neighborhood Burger. My daughter's chicken sandwich was also bland & tasteless. Overall, the food was not the best during our experience, however I am more disappointed in the service from the manager. He approached us to ask how the food was, and we explained that the shrimp and coleslaw were bland, my garlic mashed potatoes had no garlic in them, and that I was given broccoli when I had asked for green beans (which I ended up getting, but they were undercooked and tasted like plastic). Instead of posing a solution, he got offended. He responded to the shrimp dish being bland by saying, "well yeah, it's just bread and butter" as if it is supposed to be bland? I mentioned that the green beans tasted of plastic and he said "I can assure you they're real green beans." We weren't trying to create a problem by stating how our experience was, but he asked so we told him. My husband and I go up to Harrisonburg about twice a year to visit my brother and his family. We always stop in at Applebee's at least once every trip up there. We stayed at the Mariott this time around, which is relatively close to Applebee's. We were between Wood Grill and Applebee's and decided Applebee's it would be. A very sweet young lady sat us at our seat and before long our server made her way over to the table. The restaurant wasn't too packed out for a Saturday they had a few couples at the bar and a few larger parties. Our server made suggestions and even brought us water after we both order a bar drink. I personally always get the oriental chicken salad, it's my favorite from them but I decided on the chicken alfredo, I thought wth I'm on vacay. #YOLO My husband ended up wanting the steak so we got a 2 for 28. Our server was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant was clean and the food was great. We have a lot of memories with my family here, we will defiantly be back! This has to be THE WORST Applebees I've ever been to. First off, the waitress ignored us for 15-20 minutes after we were seated. I'm very understanding if it is busy, but there were a total of 4 tables. When she finally did come to take our order, she got drinks and proceeded to take another 20 minutes before she came back. Then she brings out the salad WITH THE MEAL. No one does that. When I asked her what happened, she said that she didn't ask, so she just assumed with wanted it with our meal. Wrong. Now, weve been waiting 40 minutes, the salad came with the meal, so we were already a little annoyed. I look at my steak, that I ordered medium-medium rare, and it is well done. I showed her this and politely asked if it could be replaced. She proceeded to tell me that it was cooked fine and then got her manager. I figured the manager at this point would see theres an issue and apologize for the rude waitress. NOPE. She argued with me that the steak was fine and she insisted her cooks use a thermometer. Sadly folks, the steak had ZERO pink of any kind and was burnt on the outside. It's one thing to cook something wrong. I get it, things cant always be perfect, things happen. However you should be willing to fix things. As someone who has managed for many years, I'm appalled at this managers lack of customer service and disregard to making things right. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this Applebee's!!! I'm not gonna lie, when I first looked this Applebee's up on Yelp, I was a bit skeptical when I saw its rating. However upon walking in I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff who proceeded to take my pick up order quickly and correctly. I then sat down for the fifteen minute wait to be greeted no more than two minutes after ordering by the manager J.P.. Who then did what any great manager would do and ask if I had been served. He then proceeded to check with his employees on the status of my order, and personally made sure the order was up to his standards and mine. Which I am thankful for because it was one of the best meals/experiences I've had at ANY Applebee's location! Keep up the great service! read more

Can't expect much from chain food. But it was ok for what we wanted. After a 10 minute wait when the restaurant was only 15% full (lacking servers) , our food came out quickly. I'm ok with an Applebee's here and there, although they are the Walmart of chain restaurants. The Bourbon Street Chicken and Shrimp is usually good. The problem with the Harrisonburg, Va location is that the past few times I've become sick (stomach cramps, and the rest... you can imagine) after eating here. This goes on for several hours after the meal. I do not have this reaction after eating at the Waynesboro or Staunton locations. Not sure what food borne illness is being passed on, or if others experience the same thing at this site. My advice is to go elsewhere, so many other choices nearby. read more

We stopped for lunch at this Applebee's on our way back home from Shenandoah the other day. The hostess was very helpful - service with a smile! I was at this location on November 8th, and this was my first time at this location, as I was passing through, and let me say I was horribly disappointed. Firstly it took at least 10 minutes for me to even be greeted by anyone. Once I finally got a table I order a simple burger and fries. My burger was so over cooked it might as well have been coal, and my fries were so salty I couldn't even taste the fry! Management seemed to busy to even come to my table. Horrible service!! Horrible management! The server was not the problem and was amazing. The waiter was the one fixing the managements problems. They served a bad beer and didn't change it out for us. They spilled our beer on our lap and didn't get us a new one. Our food took an hour to come out, and once it came it was all completely incorrect. The chicken was raw. The wings had zero sauce on them. The managers went off on a customer for asking why it was taking so long for them to get sat! This was the worst experience in a restaurant that I've had! The service was horrible and food was over cooked. It took forever to get our food and then it came to the table with out a order of fries and small portions of fries on the 2 other dinners because the kitchen didn't drop enough fries. Manager knew of this issue and didn't check back to see if it was corrected. I requested to speak to him when we finally received our check and after about 10 min, the manager checked on two other tables next to us before coming to our table! He stood at the table looking at our check for a few min and I had to speak up and say , just give us the check, I was only wanting you to know of the issues so don't worry about the discount! Used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Has been on a steady decline the past few years. Went there tonight and it was the worst ever. Out of draft beer, nachos were soggy, dead flies in the window sill, and the bbq wings had bbq sauce squirted on them like ketchup on fries. If you go to this location and sit at the bar, make sure Erin is your bartender. She remembers everyone and makes you feel welcome. She always has a smile. My husband and I go about 4 times a month and will only sit down if she is there from now on. Last night we took a chance when a new bartender (Jimmy) was there. My husband ordered a beer and an appetizer and I ordered a long island. When squeezing a lemon in my drink, several seeds were floating in my glass. When I was finished, I asked for a second drink and he asked if he could use the same glass. I told him I'd rather not since I hate when the seeds get in my straw and asked him to hold the garnish. He was really annoyed and proceeded to make the second drink, right in front of me with NO ALCOHOL. I bartended for 4 years and sent my drink back, letting him know I knew there was not any alcohol in my drink. Ten minutes later, he showed me the pre-mixed long island bottle and explained that was why I didn't taste any alcohol. I told him I had watched him make the drink, and he did not deny it then. A few minutes later, he asked if I wanted to order something else and I declined. Then he was talking to a co-worker about how he spits in food if it's for a cop. Awful customer service. Have been here previously and had to leave because wasn't seated for a long time and they were almost completely empty. Other guests yelled for all of to leave, cause they never got waited on. Today, this host was completely careless. No greeting, sighed when we said party of 3, and mumbled it had been a busy day. It was as if wanted us to leave. Which we should have. Waitress didn't introduce herself or welcome us at all. No updates on food. Then the waitress was constantly chatting with her friends, 2 tables away, with her hands in the girls hair. She also stood chatting with her friends holding our appetizer and we had to ask very loudly to have our app brought to us. I love Applebee's but this location needs some work. Years ago, I loved Applebee's and visited it frequently; however, when I revisited it on 09/05/2019, I was very disappointed. The carpet was dirty, which is never a good sign. The service was painfully slow, and my tea was never refreshed nor was I given water, though I did witness another waitress in another section giving attentive service to her guests. When our food finally arrived, the fries were cool, and, even worse, my simple cheeseburger was very greasy and rather thin. My friend could not even complete his sandwich plate.
