We grabbed a couple seats at the corner of the bar and were greeted right away. All three women behind the bar were personable, friendly and on top of everything, which made the experience even better. We started with spicy coconut margaritas which were so good, then split a cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. I had mine as a lettuce wrap and it was flavorful, juicy and delicious. The fries were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Great energy, friendly service and a really solid burger. I will definitely be back soon to try more of the menu.

Before going, I noticed several reviews mentioning that the food lacked flavor. After eating here, I'd have to agree. We started with the Strawberry Burrata appetizer. The burrata itself was good, but the strawberries tasted like they came from a can or pie filling instead of being fresh. It's the middle of summer, so that was disappointing. The focaccia served with it was fresh, but completely unseasoned and bland. A little olive oil, herbs, or flaky salt would have made a huge difference. For our entrees, we ordered the pasta special with chicken, peppers, and "broccolini" in a garlic sauce, along with the short rib grilled cheese and garlic Parmesan chips. First, the dish didn't contain broccolini--it was regular broccoli. That's not a huge deal, but the menu should be accurate. The penne was undercooked, the red peppers tasted like they came from a can, and the broccoli seemed straight from a frozen bag. The entire dish arrived tasting like it had been reheated in a microwave rather than cooked to order. There were only a couple of other tables in the restaurant, and they had only been open for about an hour, so that was surprising. On top of that, the dish was very bland. The short rib grilled cheese was actually the highlight of the meal. The short rib was tender and flavorful, and the sandwich had a lot of potential. However, the plain focaccia made it a little dry, and it really could have used some type of sauce or spread to bring everything together. The garlic Parmesan chips were stale, bland, and also seemed pre-made. To top it off, the menu clearly advertises that kids eat free all day on Mondays, yet we were charged $8 each for our kids' penne with red sauce. This restaurant has the potential to be really good. The ingredients and menu ideas are there, but the execution falls short. Fresher ingredients, cooking food to order, more seasoning, and a little more creativity would make a world of difference.

Textile mills went up, jobs followed, and neighborhoods grew around them. Those mills don't define West Warwick anymore, but they left something behind. This is still a blue-collar, remarkably parochial town. People grow up here and stay here. They buy the house down the street from their parents. Sometimes the one next door. Sometimes they never leave the house they grew up in. That shapes who and what survives here. West Warwick has never needed the newest restaurant concept or trendy ingredient everybody suddenly discovered six months ago. They don't need tweezers to arrange their lunch or a paragraph on the menu explaining where everything on the plate was "sourced" from. Nobody here needs their lunch explained to them. Keep it simple. Make it good. Make it right. Give people their money's worth. They'll decide if you're worth coming back to. Bill's Place West Warwick has been getting that answer right since 1974. Bill and Kiki Melanis migrated from Greece in the 1970s. They worked with family members in the pizza business before opening a place of their own. Seven tables. Fifteen stools. A small menu of pizza and grinders. That's how Bill's Place started. Fifty-two years later, I ce for lunch and ordered two things that would have made perfect sense on that original menu. A meatball grinder and a 10-inch pepperoni pizza. The grinder came cut in half on a plain plate. The meatballs are a house family recipe, sliced rather than left whole, tender and juicy, covered with sauce and melted mozzarella. When I pulled the halves apart, the cheese followed. No garnish. No little metal basket. No attempt to make a meatball grinder anything other than what it was supposed to be. It was just really good. Then the pizza arrived. Bill's offers three sizes, a 10-inch, a 16-inch large and an 18-by-12 square. I went with the little guy. Ten inches. Pepperoni. The top looked right immediately. Cheese browned across the surface. Pepperoni curled into little cups, crisp around the rims, each one holding its own little pool of oil. Pepperoni as God intended. Then I turned over the first slice. That bottom. Dark brown and gold from edge to edge. Blistered. Crisp. Oil and pan heat had put an almost fried surface across the entire thing. That's where you could see the care. Greek pizza looks simple. Dough goes into an oiled pan, sauce and cheese go on top, and the whole thing goes into the oven. Cook it wrong and you know immediately. This was cooked right. The bottom crunched. The edge crunched. Inside, the dough stayed light and soft. The sauce had enough flavor to stay present beneath the cheese. And the pepperoni contributed exactly what those little cups promised. A little crunch and a little heat. And grease. Good grease. The kind that ends up on your fingertips and requires a napkin, not an apology. While I ate, I kept noticing the interactions. The servers were young. Teenagers, maybe very early twenties. But when they stopped at the tables, the conversations weren't young. They knew the orders. They knew the families. They knew enough about what had happened since the last visit to know what to ask about this time. That's different from good service. That's familiarity. That's belonging. And in West Warwick, that carries a ton of weight. Fifty-two years of people coming through the door. Parents bringing kids. Kids growing up, becoming regulars, then bringing kids of their own. Maybe that's the best measure of a great neighborhood restaurant. Not how long the doors have been open. How many generations have contunued walking through them.

For an entree, I always get the same thing - the Bayou Chicken Pasta. I'm not usually a huge fan of cream sauce and pasta, but I love something with a good kick. This pasta has chicken, corn, tomatoes, slices of some type of green pepper that I think gives it a little bit of heat as well as Cajun spices and Parmesan cheese on top. I usually ask for extra sauce and add Tabasco sauce and it has some great flavor. I've been really impressed by the cocktails here lately. I ventured in February and was made a delicious gin and guava cocktail. I don't know if they have guava anymore, but it was so good and I wish I'd gotten the ingredients. On the menu for Summer is this lovely lavender haze cocktail, but I do not like the citrus cold foam because it's a bit too bitter so I always have that taken off and add a little bit of Club soda instead. I also really like the salted caramel martini, and in the past, if I wanted more lavender or didn't think the salted caramel martini tasted enough like caramel, they have always brought over simple syrup or even a little more of the flavored alcohol to give the drink the intended flavor. I really appreciate that type of service and I've never been nickel and dimmed for that either. The service has always been phenomenal, and I overall like the vibe. It's a really big restaurant and so I've never waited very long to be seated. The bathrooms have always been clean, which is a huge one for me. I definitely will keep this in the rotation, especially when they have a lavender gin.

The first thing is that the reservations system is absolutely a complete and utter shit show. They do this thing called 'call ahead' where you call the restaurant or go online and hold a spot. It's a turd of a system because it doesn't seem to work. We came in and waited almost 30 minutes and saw several others who checked in and came 10 minutes after get a table. When we asked the host, they said it was because they had 2 people in their group and we had 3 people. Yet they were all seated in the same section we eventually were at the exact same table size. Beyond that, when you walk into the restaurant there is a giant revolving door, which gives about 5 feet of clearance to the hostess stand. There were no less than 20 people waited in an area the size of a hotel elevator. And each time someone came in, there was basically nowhere to move and the door sometimes hit the people gathered in the small area to wait. I cannot imagine a planet on which this would not be some kind of fire code issue. Beyond the utter chaos and frustration of the check-in system, we were finally seated after 20 - 30 minutes. The waitress was clearly overworked. Very capable but spread too thin and a bit frazzled but helpful when she appeared. We ordered: - Smash burger. This was actually very good. At $18, it should be. 1 mile away is a Shake Shack and I'd say that Shake Shack is a slightly better burger (at 1/2 the price) but the fries at B.J's were better. - California Chicken Club. The chicken breast was grilled nicely and actually had a grilled flavour, which was good. The bacon could have been a bit crispier. Tomatoes seemed fresh. Guacamole was not fresh, likely, but better than mayonnaise. I'd order this again. - The side Wedge was pretty blah. There were literally two small bacon bits on it. The dressing probably came from an industrial-sized bucket and contained no blue cheese chunks. It may as well be ranch. The lettuce was crisp and fresh. Probably not much better than French fries as a side. - Brown Ale was pretty terrible. It tasted of alcohol and was not smooth at all. I'd probably get a national brand, if this was a good example of their house made beer. Overall, I have to admit the food was better than 99% of chain restaurants (Applebees, Chilis, TGIFriday, etc.) It was true comfort food and if your expectations are low ... and you need a place to take the kids, this won't be terrible. It's somewhere between a Chucky Cheese and a Tavern on the Square. The prices were high ... but we felt that we got what we paid for.
