This was a simple and delicious quaint spot in downtown Lithonia that I would highly recommend for an afternoon lunch and quick bite to eat! At first I was skeptical from the outside of the restaurant and once I entered, only half the restaurant had lights on and there were no other customers in the restaurant. The owner (I believe) greeted my mother and I and explained their menu and specials for the day. For my meal, I went with the pulled pork sandwich, Mac and cheese, greens and "hoe cake" with an Arnold Palmer. Overall, the meal was satisfying, flavorful, want good priced! Was getting my dress altered next door and decided to come in for a bite to eat. I had the 2 PC Whiting with fries. Also ordered some hushpuppies, a lemonade, and piece of Carmel cake. Everything came out super fast and super hot! The fries were fresh cut and so good (definitely makes a difference) the fish was amazing with great flavor as well as the hush puppies. The lemonade was fresh as well and tasty! I haven't tried the cake yet cause I'm too full and still have a dress to get into lol. But from the looks of it, I don't think I'll be disappointed. The Grand Opening here was phenomenal. The food came out quickly. I had the ribs, mac n cheese, pulled pork sandwich and the bbq chicken wings, slaw and a peach cobbler. All the food was delicious. The ribs were tender. The pulled sandwich was very good. All in all this was a greatly experience and I would definetly come back. The food was very reasonably priced. Wasn't satisfied at all definitely over priced the wings are very very small and greasy and I literally counted my fries I had 18 fries I watched the cook split a small basket of fries between 3 orders and considering I was the last order I guess I got the least of fries and I also grabbed the strawberry cake .. wouldn't recommend it was dry not moist at all . Service was minimal. Take order move on relationship. No greeting. No smile. No extra effort. The food is a D, and that's kind. I know it's harsh but my chicken was hard, the bbq sauce tasted like Kraft, the Mac and cheese was mushy, and my lemonade tasted like sugar water. How do you mess up a beverage? This is a rebuttal to "Foodies" one star review of this establishment . Let me add "Foodie" leaves lots of places bad reviews. I have been to this place many times and I have never seen an attitude much less got "abused". The lady is always preparing the food and her super sweet southern gentleman husband runs the front counter at least each time I have been in there. I have had a few interactions with the lady and I could see where someone might take her as having a little air about her but I don't think it's an attitude. Some people just aren't all "honey, baby sugar" that have to deal with the public. I feel she works long hours and that itself can wear on your patience sometimes. Also the public can be rather trying at times. I own three stores and it's tough to deal with some people. These people think that they aren't the problem but that someone else is. For this lady to have been in there that many times and kept going back makes me wonder was she looking for something to fuss about. I might go twice to a bad service place but not ten times!!! I have an employee that can be abrupt but she means nothing by it. It's her personality. All my customers just say "that's just Kathy". They don't take offense to it. As I said everyone can't be honey baby sugar all the time. I would be willing to bet this reviewer is one who looks for a reason to complain. I mean how many times did she say she went there 10????! It took ten times to get tired of the abuse? Please. Abuse? I feel this lady if full of herself. Also why did she refer all those church people to this place??? Applewhite's is in an old shopping center in Lithonia. The restaurant is clean and inviting. We ordered at the counter. Had Bbq sandwiches and french fries. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful. The food was good. The prices were very reasonable. We will be returning. My daughter and I stopped in for lunch. I ordered the whiting combo and hush puppies. My daughter ordered the ribs combo. They ended up not having any hush puppies. I was also disappointed to learn that they didn't have any peach cobbler. However since they were out of hush puppies they gave me free dessert. I had the sweet potato pie and it was really good! I was minding my own business and decided to purchase some lunch for my husband and I. Thus, I decided to go to Applewhite's for some food. Low and behold the owner, whose actually a pretty woman gets an attitude with me and I decided to take my dollars elsewhere. Every time I come in the owner has an attitude. This was my tenth visit and after today I decided that I would no longer pay someone to verbally abuse me. The food taste great, but the owner needs to hire someone with a nice attitude, because that is not her strong suite. I have even referred multiple church members and friends to the place. Everyone liked the food, but had commentary about the owner's attitude. Again, the food taste great, but if you can suffer through the owner's attitude then take a chance. Other than that go to the other soul food place behind the apartment complex or to the Veggie place. There are too many other viable options there to be abused. The food is good, but the owner is nasty. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean that it is a treat! read more
