I haven't been here since they were at the old location on Lee Rd and in my opinion I wasn't super impressed. My mom raves about them, so I wanted to have them cater her surprise 70th bday party. This is my first time planning a party on my own and I guess my budget was too low because when I submitted an inquiry, I got ZERO response. I can understand if my budget isn't one they can work with, but a simple response would have sufficed. I decided to go with another caterer and because they took the time to educate me, I increased my budget by $1k. Sometimes customer service means educating the customer if they don't know and understand. For this reason I can't say I would recommend this place, but I know my mom will continue to patronize this restaurant. So maybe the food is better from my last experience several years ago. Ordered the cube steak with gravy, potato salad and green beans. Cube steak has no gravy so it was served over white rice. Potato salad was ok. Green beans taste like they came out of a can, not well seasoned, but salty. I'm giving the Collard Greens Gumbo 2 stars for one main reason: it's excessively salty. If you're seasoning the gumbo and then seasoning the greens separately, it results in an overwhelming amount of salt. Additionally, when ordering gumbo "To Go," it should be served in a sturdy plastic bowl container with a secure lid, not a styrofoam clam shell. Half the juice spilled into the bag during my short 10-minute trip home, leaving me with a much drier dish than intended. I hope these suggestions help improve both the taste and packaging for future customers. read more

They've moved since I first visited. The new space is across from Lion's Gate movie studios. It's larger, more updated & clean. The bar is right in the middle of the restaurant soon as you walk in. I was shopping next door @ another Black owned business. I don't always like heavy soul food or meat. I opted for the veggie platter which is basically ALL items from the sides portion. You get the option of 3 or 4 items. The bar staff were nice & took my order. Order: Mac & Cheese, Cabbage, Yams, & Green beans. Arnold Palmer drink, it's so sweet that I can split it into two with ice & it tastes better watered down. I'll say that everything was delicious & portions are plenty. My only complaint is the green beans were super salty, like almost couldn't eat them. Also, they don't pack my food well for takeout. Pls wrap in cling wrap on the containers. All the liquid spilled inside my bag. It could've messed up my car. I'd be pissed! Otherwise, I'm gonna keep coming to April's Place whenever I'm In the area. read more

I read a raving review about April's Place, so we decided to go Saturday around 2 pm. The restaurant is in a new strip mall and there were plenty of parking spaces. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted with a smile and seated promptly. The decor was average and people were casually dressed. The waiter was polite, attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. We ordered the seafood egg rolls as an appetizer, they were really good. The shrimp/grits a fish were good but could use a little more seasoning. The mac and cheese was delicious. Yeah this a no for me here.I had them back in 2020 and decided to go to there new location in 2024. The meal I had was lemon herb bake chicken, collard green, yams and a side of fried chicken. It was NOT delicious. -Both bake & fried Chicken was not fully cooked. -The fried chicken breaded part was good but the chicken meat had zero season and not fully cooked. -Collard greens were salty as heck and a bit to watery. -Yams was the only item that actually had a good taste I just did not care for the texture or the mash potato vibe it was given off. -Banana pudding was actually good. The customer service: Service is pour. No acknowledgment when you walk in. There were two workers (male and female ) working behind the bar. Both looked me in my face and said not a word. Okay try to give grace to the man worker, since he was taking an order with the couple that was to the right side of me, but the young lady worker was watching him in amazement, so she could have spoke. Both workers clearly saw me sitting at the bar waiting to order (I was the last person to walk up and sit down) . Neither one said an "hello", be right with you... nothing. He finished the order and went off to go wipe down tables etc etc. Then the young lady walked pass me to check on the other two people to the left of me who where eating. Okay so I sat there for 12 minutes waiting to be acknowledged. Then they both met back up at the register talking so more (appeared to be business related). Meanwhile I am still sitting there staring at them.. finally the guy says to me have you been helped?!? I wanted to say by who? You are the one taking the orders and you know good and well you did not take my order soo why play that card "oh have you been helped". But I had that conversation in my held lol. My girlfriend's mom suggested we try April's place for after church dinner. We arrived around 2pm and I was surprised it wasn't packed. We were immediately seated. After reviewing the menu I decided to order the turkey wings that came with rice with collard greens and macaroni and cheese as sides. The meal was just okay. I want to give them a 4.5 because no one is perfect. We went here as a shot in the dark, looking on Yelp for soul food - on a Sunday - in Douglasville. We were pleasantly surprised and delighted with the food, service and overall experience! The location is on Fairburn in an area that is experiencing lots of redevelopment. There's construction happening in and around the neighborhood but this shopping center is about 100% occupied. The April's team has occupied this space since September 2022. We arrived for an early dinner and went for it. Cocktails, appetizer and entrees. Luckily we skipped dessert! We started with the SW egg rolls that came drizzled with siracha mayo (or similar) and had a wonderful curry flavor. To drink we had the Georgia Peach and the Southern Margarita. Sooo good! He ordered the fried chicken with three sides - collard greens, cabbage & rice with gravy. I ordered the salmon croquettes with grits, eggs & toast. Everything was delicious! Our only complaint was the temperature could have been served hotter. Gravy on the rice was mediocre. The ambiance is chill - they have R&B music playing, big screen TVs and active diners either at the bar or to-go orders. The take out volume was high so that's a sign the food is good! Prices are on the higher side but I was fine for good food and great portions. Overall we will be back. The TVs weren't all working for some odd reason and people had their own devices to watch. Stayed overnight in Georgia on our way to Florida and decided to try April's. Loved everything about the place. Our server was attentive and very courteous and the food was great. Wife had the ox tails/gravy served over rice with greens and mac and cheese for sides. The 6 oxtails were very tender and rich, the greens were seasoned perfectly and the Mac and cheese was very cheesy without being dry. I had the blackened catfish that included 4 nice sized shrimp served over rice with a nice mild white sauce. It was tremendous. The yams we're the best I've ever had, and I don't really eat them very often. Prices are very reasonable, the food is great and the friendly service is top notch. 5 stars without a doubt. read more

We loved April's when it was on Lee Rd. This one is quite different. We walked in after church. We seated ourself. No one came to take our orders or give us menus for at least 10 minutes. Someone finally came to take our order after attending to a couple that arrived after us. When the food finally came out it was taken to the wrong table... then the waitress brought it to our table instead of remaking it. I just prayed over it. The food wasn't hot but it wasn't cold so I didn't send it back. Everything tasted good but I'm sure it would have been better hot. April's place was a refreshing surprise. A friend recommended it to me. We got there at around 2:15 on Sunday. It was a little crowded but we were seated pretty quickly. We ordered an appetizer and meals. The advertiser was the chicken gizzards which were excellent. For our meals we had the oxtails, 3 chicken wing dinner, catfish, turkey wings and creole grits. Each one came with sides. We selected more macaroni & cheese, potato salad, yams, collard green. The best meal was the fried chicken, turkey wings and catfish. The best size was the collard greens, macaroni & cheese and potato salad. We enjoyed it and would definitely go back again. The only negative if there was one was that the service was very slow. The appetizer came out in a decent amount of time. But we finished the appetizer and waited a long time before our food actually got there. I came here for the first time for a holiday party this evening. Because of the great service, food, and drinks, I will definitely be back during regular hours. The service was fast and friendly. Many people at my table commented on how quickly we were able to be served in such a large group. They were extremely efficient in their service. The food was phenomenal! I had dirty rice, cabbage, chicken wings, and some cornbread. Everything I had was extremely flavorful. It was not too spicy for my taste, but the food definitely had some spice. It seemed to be perfect for a range of people. For me, it was just enough spice to make it flavorful, for others at my table. It was a bit spicy. I also had a couple drinks from the bar. Their cocktails are a little bit on the pricey side, but they were not light on their pours. Their cocktails were made really well with good flavor and strength. I didn't feel like anything was water down, so I felt comfortable paying the price listed for the cocktails. With food and service being this good during a holiday party with a lot of people, I'm excited to see what they serve when I come back and order off their menu. I ordered the herb and butter baked chicken and yams of the three sides I ordered. Chicken was seasoned but way too salty. Chef could go lighter on the salt. Now the yams were the consistency of soufflé. Void of what you expect when you order yams vs potato soufflé. A little more heat/warmth to meal would have also helped. Service is always slow and unorganized though I need see more staff so moving in the right direction. I don't think the greater should be rolling silverware at a stand at the door and seating you. Waitresses came to her to get the tableware settings!?! Maybe short staffed that day--benefit of doubt but she was also helping with food service and I didn't notice her wash her hands before returning as greeter and preparing silverware. Floors were a bit sticky a bit too much. You could feel and hear the rubber soles of shoes sticking to floor when you walked. You know that sound. But I experienced way worse. Just need to also do little more cleaning after closing. Because I did see much needed additional staff and everybody was working and attending to customers, I will recommend and return later to see more improvements. Foods not bad! Nice place with really good food. This place was tucked away in a small plaza off Fairburn Rd. The atmosphere wasn't really decorated really extravagant but the food was delicious. Our catfish was crispy and well seasoned. The grits were creamy and topped with crawfish & grilled shrimp. The greens were flavorful and were not full of stems. Just an overall good meal. Our server, Kendall, was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I will definitely be back to try something new next time. read more

The place started off promising but after a couple of visits in it took a turn (slow u-turn ). Take-out order incorrect, take-out order taken only to be told upon arrival that they were out of main course I ordered, and then an incorrect order where a refund was required but never processed. I guess I'll have to look at it as an undeserved and very nice tip. I tried to get it rectified on several occasions but I have to charge to the game. I won't beg for my refund. I'm trying to be fair (2 stars instead of 1) because there are two meals that are sufficient based on location. I don't mind paying for decent food and great service. I always give credit where credit is due. However It always seem to be a trend to have the nastiest attitude toward customers. I try to patronize black own businesses, but this was a horrible experience. The waitress at the door was extremely rude, lazy,arrogant and very unprofessional! That's the only reason that the group that I was with decided not to stay and It's very sad that our people will treat certain customers in a disrespectful manner. I really wanted to try your food, but that female(I didn't catch he name), that was at the door, displayed a horrible example of how to treat paying guests. She really need to be trained on how to respect customers. It's sad that you lost a party of 5 because of this females attitude. By the way, we will not come back to patronize your establishment. So today, 9/24/17, I decided to give it another try since I was close by, wanted vegetables and didn't feel like driving to Mableton. I ordered collards, cabbage, lima beans and field peas. The food service tray showed snaps in the field peas. No snaps made it to my plate. They're hard too. So concerned if these are black eyed peas being passed off as field peas? Nothing really tasted great today. I can't even describe how it tastes....other than nothing soulful or very flavorful to want to finish eating it. I wasted $ again.
