Didn't realize until a moment ago my first review of April's Place was exactly a year ago. So today, 9/24/17, I decided to give it another try since I was close by, wanted vegetables and didn't feel like driving to Mableton. I ordered collards, cabbage, lima beans and field peas. The food service tray showed snaps in the field peas. No snaps made it to my plate. They're hard too. So concerned if these are black eyed peas being passed off as field peas? Nothing really tasted great today. I can't even describe how it tastes....other than nothing soulful or very flavorful to want to finish eating it. I wasted $ again. Wifey and myself decided to try this place close to home ...it is amazing we were greeted like family when we walked in we both ordered the three wings both had the collard greens she had mac n cheese I had candied yams and for desert we had a peach cobbler and banana pudding ....this food tasted like someone who loves you made it just for you. Oh no, I wanted to like this place. Sadly, I didn't! I ordered the chopped steak, rice and gravy, collard greens and Mac & cheese. I also order banana pudding thinking it would be the real custard banana pudding, I was extremely disappointed to taste the box tasting vanilla cream pudding banana pudding, it was awful..... I spent $4 on a small container when it only takes $4 to actually make the entire pan of this dessert. The collard greens were salty and not cooked down long enough to my standards. The driest baked chicken I've ever had. It was suppose to be lemon herbed flavored. No lemon. No herbs. Bland. Sad. The Mac and cheese was unfortunate. The rice was overcooked. The cornbread was flavorless. The green beans tasted like they were straight out of the can. The potato salad had so many potato peels that it seemed intentional. The fish was soft and under seasoned. This was essentially funeral food. Nothing about this was pleasing. I'm so sorry but my only goal today was to show my support, but this was not it. Service was extremely slow. I asked what the egg roll of the day and by time they came back with an answer I forgot I had even asked and said never mind assuming our food would be coming out soon but boy was I wrong. After waiting for over an hour and being told it several times it would be out soon we got up and left. We were almost to the car and the waiter yelled out the door that he had our food. I didn't want to go back but my husband said we might as well. The food was okay but nothing special and definitely not worth the wait. Initially the server was pleasant but definitely had an attitude after we left and came back. We ordered a Sprite that we never received but was still on the bill. When we asked for it to be removed it was like we were wrong because we didn't want to pay for something we didn't receive. There was no apology for the long wait or for the oversight on the bill. I had heard good things about April's Place, so I decided to take my wife there for our 40th anniversary breakfast. What I had heard doesn't even come close to the wonderful experience we had!!! We got there around 2pm. Seated right away. Unfortunately I can't give this place a good review. Wait staff was polite but, not very attentive. The young lady who was our server took about 10-15 minutes to come to our table for our drink order. We decided that it might be a good idea to place our food order as well. Ordered 2 items from the appetizer menu, egg rolls and salmon sliders. The young lady left to get us our drinks and put in our food. She finally came back with two glasses of water about 15-20 minutes later. I asked her approximately how much longer until our food would be ready. She said it should be ready in about 10 minutes. At 3:05pm we finally got her attention and let her know that we would be leaving as it had been over an hour and we hadn't even gotten our appetizers. We told her to cancel our order and we said that we were going to leave and go somewhere else to eat. She politely said okay and thanked us for coming. The staff was polite but the service was not very good or fast. I should have read the reviews before coming as I checked them out later and it seems like this experience was consistent with many others. I don't think I will come back. read more

A friend recommended this spot so I gave it a try. The cashier was very nice and friendly. I ordered the oxtail dinner with Mac n cheese and black eye peas, The ox tails were so tough that I could not pull the meat from the bones with my hands. The gravy was too salty, as a matter fact they could use some of that on the mac & cheese. The only thing good on my plate was the blackeye peas. I had to re-cook the ox tails for another hour and a half to make them tender. I don't know how the other food may be, but the oxtail dinner was a miss. I won't be coming back. read more

My daughter and I ate here last Wednesday night, March 30, 2022 and we had a fantastic meal with excellent food and great service. Our waiter made a few suggestions for appetizers and we took him up on the Aprils Southern Rolls, which is a different special egg roll type of concoction as a special, and this day it was a sweet potato and macaroni and cheese mixture and I cannot say enough about how awesome this was! It was sweet but perfectly balanced so as not to be too sweet. This was perhaps my favorite item we ate, because I had not expectation it would be something I would like, and I loved it! We also had the Sweet and Tangy Boneless wings, which when I have ordered in other places they will come out dry and overcooked. Not these moist little morsels of excellence. I loved these too. I would have liked for them to have been spicier with more pepper heat, but enjoyed them nonetheless. We both ordered the Fried Fish and Grits and this was also wonderful. The fish was fried perfectly and the grits were seasoned with salt and this made for a perfect fish and grits dish! The service was excellent on the front end, but the kitchen was a little slow, but for a mom and pop local restaurant I will always support this over a chain any day of the week. We will be back! Been here a few times but neglected to do a review. I should of but needless to say I came tofay with my nephew and the staff was very polite in aiding my confused nephew in making a choice in his food and being patient, Finally when he order he wanted chicken wings and rice and they somehow made it work and also had him grinning all the way. Lol I Had the lunch special which i find to be affordable and also fulfilling. The food is good not a fan of the mac and cheese but all other items work for me, But i think the Mac and Cheese has to be the 2nd best item along with potato salad which i havent tried and thats my fav side item so i dont try it unless i sure its the bomb. Excellent southern style food. We had the catfish plates. The pieces of fish were very tasty and the portions were generous. The food was served quickly and the temperature was perfect. They have a good variety of sides and they also tasted great. The quality of the food rivals much more expensive restaurants. The service was also fantastic. I highly recommend this establishment. This is a cozy sized restaurant and bistro, so plan on arriving before lunch and dinner rushes to avoid waiting for a table. read more

April's Place is like my take-out mom. I like what she cooks nearly all the time, and will keep coming back to the table because I have no choice. And, she makes some dishes that are unmatched! It's literally right across the street from me. April's Place has really great soul food that gives me that 3pm Pastor Anniversary, after the program vibes. You know...the lemonade out the trashcan vibe. I've gotten everything from the 3 wing combo with mac & cheese/potato salad and greens, to the fried whiting combo, or even the smothered white meat, baked chicken combo. Got the meatloaf before and wasn't a huge fan, but it did the job. They get that fried chicken right, EVERY TIME! My favorite side is definitely the potato salad! The yams too!! Everything I have ordered has been quite tasty and well-prepared. Their cooks know their way around the kitchen and the portions are rather filling. I'm a regular so there is nothing bad to say about this spot in my opinion. Very small, homely interior with an extraordinary staff who always gets my order right. Well, a few times they left my cheese off my grits (fish and grits), but I won't hold that against you. :) Thank you for being my neighborhood soul food spot. 4 out of 5 stars! I should have been paid $14.99 for eating this crap! I know I love me some oxtails, but these rubbery and flavorless things almost have me thinking I never want another oxtail again in life!!! And for the macaroni and cheese... They know they were wrong for making that with spoiled milk! As soon as I open the plate, I smelled something sour! I stuck my fork in the Mac & cheese, brought it up to my mouth to take a bite...the smell made me drop the fork. So my two stars is just for the greens, they were delicious, but I messed up by putting the cornbread in my greens that also was made with spoiled milk! We miss the rice with gravy that has come with our meals in the past. My son enjoys it. I ordered it today with a meal and instead of rice I get two servings of greens. Rice written on the container. No rice in the container. Another order came with regular rice. If the rice has no gravy, it should be listed on the website. Collards have way too much vinegar. And you can smell it. Not flavorful. I was afraid to order from this restaurant because of all the negative reviews. However, the Uber Eats choices near me are limited so I decided to just give April's Place a try. I also heard it's a black owned establishment. I was pleased with my meal overall. I ordered the chicken and waffle. The chicken was fresh, crispy, well seasoned, but not salty. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the powdered sugar on top. It didn't mix well with the spices of the chicken. The waffle was soft, made the way I like, and not mushy. Well I have been going to April's now probably for the last 6 months I have always ordered the fried catfish or the fried whitening but something has recently has changed with the batter for the fish. The fish used to be very very flaky the batter used to be very very light it was not bready it was just a very light batter on it, but now it seems as if they have changed it. And it's AWFUL it's very bready is very doughy. It's just not good and I thought it was just me but my coworker came to me and said they didn't like it any more either. My company comes up there all week long, so April if you're reading this. If You or your mother are reading this y'all need to go back to y'alls original battar because the new battar is not good. So I don't recommend the fish until they can change it back so for this reason I'm giving it a one-star read more
