Gumbeaux's is one of those places that a LOT of people seem to love, but I'm just not one of them. I ordered the gumbo in the evening, and it tasted like it had been sitting in the pot all day. The ingredients were overcooked, the texture was off, and instead of tasting rich and fresh, it just tasted tired. Gumbo is one of those dishes where everything should have had time to come together without tasting like it's been cooking since breakfast. There's a difference. The interior has that old-school, casual Cajun restaurant feel. It has character, but it definitely feels dated. If you like places that feel more like a longtime neighborhood institution than a polished restaurant, you may appreciate it more than I did. The portions are generous, and clearly this place has a loyal following, so I know plenty of people disagree with me. For me though, the food just didn't do it. One visit was enough. The food and portions are plentiful! Excellent taste and flavors- so much to choose from. Great drinks and creative drink menu. I usually enjoy this place but today the experience was less than stellar. Arrived at 4:30 just after opening - for a party of 13. We didn't get out until 7:45 and NOT due to eating long. We did not get seated until 5:30 and that was temporary seating around the upstairs bar. We were so hungry we ordered appetizers, drinks and an hour later was told we could move to a table for dinner... why didn't we stay at the tables upstairs? We were celebrating an 80th birthday so we had seniors in our party! For some, it was past their dinner time and budget therefore many had to leave and our celebration was falling apart. On a serious note we were so happy we got to come here! The food was amazing! Very well seasoned and has a nice kick- not the spice that is unbearable, it is what is needed. The portions are indeed BIG so great for sharing or to have left overs. The chicken I had was on a bed of mashed potatoes and it was the most tender chicken I had. So good. I don't enjoy eating shrimp poop. I expected standard culinary quality and professional service but instead encountered unacceptable food preparation and hostile behavior from the owner, Wendy. I quickly realized the shrimp in the $25 shrimp creole had not been deveined. The digestive tract intact is unappetizing and unacceptable, particularly for a dish at that price point. Wendy the owner, flatly refused to take back or exchange the meal, claiming the menu only states the shrimp is "peeled." Maybe the menu should indicate peeled but not deveined/cleaned. Out of curiosity, I subsequently called two other Cajun restaurants in the area, and both confirmed that they always devein the shrimp in their shrimp creole. I informed Wendy the owner, how I will pay for this inedible dish but I am going to dispute the charge. In response, Wendy called law enforcement, falsely alleging that I was refusing to pay, and that I was threatening her. She actually wanted them to issue me a misdemeanor charge. What is wrong with this money hungry owner? Especially when all she had to do was offer me a different meal in exchange because I do not want to eat shrimp poop. Because of her false accusations, I also called law enforcement to clarify that I was paying my bill and to request an incident report to support my planned credit card dispute. My dining companion was also very dissatisfied with another matter. He also posted a negative review with his dissatisfaction. We both agreed that we will never go back. read more

Food was good if you like New Orleans style food. It's some of the closest you'll get. But beware it's def spicy I had the crab stuffed shrimp, dirty rice, and jalepeno corn. The jalepeno corn was so good but I couldn't eat it all bec of the spice. My husband had the sampler and a piece of fried flounder , his food was good as well! First time here and service and food was excellent! I had the blackened red fish sail special and subbed the Creole rice for dirty rice. Our server Jason and the manager took extra precautions to make sure I wouldn't be glutened. I also love that the manager took time to go over all of my options. While they don't have a separate gluten free menu, there were plenty of items (including the fried items) to choose from. Jason's energy was amazing, and you could tell he loved working here. Parking is hectic in front of and around the restaurant. BUT IT'S FREE! We know how parking is in metro Atlanta. The inside area isn't as big as some of the pictures make it seem. It did not take us long to be seated. They have an elevator to reach the second floor. We were seated on the first floor. The service was amazing. Everyone was so helpful and courteous. The manager is very nice. You get A LOT of food for a decent price. The small banana foster will feed a party of 8, lol. It doesn't contain a lot of banana's at the bottom of the ice cream. We all sampled food off each other's plates with a few additional dishes. I forgot to take a picture of my food. I had the French Quarter Shrimp and I ordered the potatoes and corn on the side. One of my favorite restaurants in Douglasville. Anytime I'm in this area I have to stop by here. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I went upstairs to the bar area and the bartender ended up being our waiter. He was kind and even put a twist on one of their signature drinks for me. A game was on so the bar was packed. Our food came out fast. The shrimp and grits is one of my favorites on the menu. The shrimp are fried to perfection and the grits are the best consistency. The sauce with crawfish inside takes the meal to the next level paired with toasted French bread. It also comes with a side. I had the green beans. They were seasoned well. Overall I had a great time here and wish I lived closer so I can come more often. read more

While in Atlanta visiting family, we decided on something other than fast food. My husband was craving oysters and somehow we ended up at Gumbeaux's. Oysters turned into seafood gumbo which turned into crawfish. It was a great dinner for those who like Louisiana/cajun cooking. I chose to stick with plain fried shrimp. ALL OF US thoroughly enjoyed our meals, even the two year who had a grilled cheese sandwich. We did have a short wait for a table because we need seating for 6 people. It was quite crowded in the lobby while waiting and people had to continuously move out of the way of others that were coming and going. Once seated at our table, we still had to continue to move the baby stroller out of the way as people passed by our table. I feel like this was definitely NOT acceptable per ADA regulations. We definitely seemed to be enveloped in between many smaller tables -- so this restaurant may not be good for larger parties. My first time at Gumbeaux's did not disappoint! My BFFs Lobster & Shrimp Bisque was too salty. The waitress quickly replaced it from a new batch which was amazing. My Seafood Chowder was absolutely delicious!!! The Fried Flounder & Creamed Corn were seasoned to perfection. BFFs' mild Buffalo Shrimp was delicious. It had an amazing flavor. I see this restaurant all the time and finally decided to try it. The food was good, but the service was absolute trash. We ordered the buffalo shrimp and oysters for starters. The oysters arrived, but the shrimp never did. When our entrees finally came out and we asked about the shrimp, we were told the kitchen "lost the ticket." As a server, if you know you put in an order for shrimp and oysters, but only see oysters on the table, that's when you should be asking questions. To make matters worse, I asked to speak with a manager three separate times, and no one ever came to our table. After discussing the issue with Shelby, she caught an attitude and started slamming things down on the table. This was our first and absolute last time eating here. read more

After hearing all the reviews from fellow Douglavillians I had to see if this spot was worth the hype. Went on a rainy Saturday evening and thought it was going to take a while for a table. Not even 10 mins later we had our seats! My friend had a lil trouble finding something on the menu due to her shellfish allergy. Unfortunately most of the protein except chicken is cooked in the same grease as the seafood. This spot may not be the best if you have a similar allergy. My food was cool. I wasn't blown away honestly and I'm quite sad about it. I had the tiger bait shrimp and a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo. I enjoyed the gumbo more than the shrimp. The shrimp was a bit salty for my liking. Our server was really nice. I think she could have been just a bit more attentive. Growing up in this area Gumbeaux's set the bar for new Orleans style food here in Douglasville. I remember my first time coming i took my family there and they loved it. The the flavors, the sounds of the restaurant; the people smiling and enjoying their food and time with family was such a great experience. My wife and I love this amazing Cajun restaurant located in downtown Douglasville. I am shocked that I have never written a review of Gumbeaux's Cajun Cafe. The restaurant is located in a two story brick storefront on Veteran's Memorial Hwy one block from the old courthouse. Parking can be difficult to find on the street front but plenty of parking is available behind and around the old courthouse. Upon entry, there is a station to give your name and get seated at a table. This front area has a bar and a few high top tables. There is a front and back dining area along with an upstairs dining area which is used in the evenings on weekends. Almost all of the servers have been at Gumbeaux's for years and they all are super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We asked to be seated at our Favorite server's table, Linda. Linda is the absolute best server and kindest person you ever will meet. The food is off the chart delicious and they offer numerous traditional Cajun dishes along with daily specials. We came here for lunch and my better half wanted to try their appetizer special which was fried mushrooms and she ordered one of her favorites for lunch which is Peel & Eat French Quarter Shrimp. I tried the lunch special Shrimp Pontchartrain Sauce on Creole Orzo topped with Fried Popcorn Crawfish Tails and Green Onions served with a side of Red Beans and Rice and Garlic Bread. All of our dishes were delicious and so flavorful. If you love Cajun food, Gumbeaux's Cajun Cafe is a MUST try restaurant. Try it once and you will be a fan for life! read more
