I've been coming to Aquarium Arts for the better part of the last 20 years. My first time into this store I can't remember entirely as this was just the closest aquarium store to where I was living at the time. I do remember that I was treated with respect and given good advice to help me with my fish going needs. I continue to go to this store even tho I pass a dozen pet's marts and various other aquarium type stores because I feel as if I get a more personal touch from this location. I'm supporting a local business by going to this location and get genuine advice regardless if the advice helps the bottom line of the business or not. Every time I come to this store I'm greeted by at least 2-3 different employee's and offered advice on any question I may have. Other's suggesting they did not receive adequate service I suspect are outlier's from the norm. I've been at this store 30 minutes past closing a few times and never felt like I was being rushed out the door or ignored till I went away. I've often been waiting for specific fish or corals to come in and I get timely calls from the staff to see if I'm interested in picking them up. When was the last time Pets Mart had that sort of service? Bottom line is I'm not sure if I'd even be in this hobby anymore if it wasn't for this store. My only wish was they were closer to my home. I was having a problem with our koi fish and determining how to treat it. I went to a 'koi pond' specialist on the west side who will remain nameless. Instead of 'helping' me I felt they just wanted to take advantage of the fact that I was a little clueless and desperate since I didn't want to loose my fish. They charged me $25 to do a 'scale test' so they could tell me I had Chilodonella and sold me 5 lbs of salt for $5. When I called to tell her the salt treatment wasn't working and was trying to get some questions answered she said to come back in and do another scale test for another $25....that seemed ridiculous to me and then I remember Aquarium Arts. They had helped me out many years ago when I had fresh water fish. I went down there spoke to one of the guys, he took his time and answered ALL my questions for FREE , what a concept! We put our heads together and agreed that an FMG (QuickCure) treatment might do the trick....so basically for less than $3 I fixed the problem. If you ever have a problem with your fish these guys are great at answering all questions and pretty knowledgeable. I am definitely making sure that in the future I support this mom n pop business! read more

This is like going into a free sealife aquarium! We come in here before checking out Predator's next door. I dream about a salt water aquarium everytime I come in here, but the cost and upkeep is enough for me to let that go. When my step sister used to live here, she would come all the way from North Scottsdale to buy some of the sea critters. Lots of different types of sea urchins, anemonies and corals glow under UV lights! I'm going back to get several of those faux jellies. I thought they were real! read more

This is a very good local fish store. Probably my favorite thing here is the customer service. If I have any questions about my tank or future purchases I would probably come here first. The general staff is knowledgeable, but if you catch the owner (or to a lesser extent the woman whom I think is his wife) he is probably the best source of info you could get. This store is rather small, but they have a good selection. Also they seem to have a somewhat rotating selection so it's worth it to check in often. Their selection of supplies is excellent and possibly the best I've found in the east valley. Also, the prices here seem better or comparable to other stores. read more

Been going here for awhile now for my aquarium. I'm fairly new to the aquarium life and all of their staff is friendly and knowledgeable. My go to person is Chris, he is a wealth of knowledge and super friendly. Not afraid to go the extra step. They have a great variety of fish and they actually care about the health of their fish. They refuse to sell any fish if there is any kind of quality issue. Ive also never seen a dead fish in any of their tanks which is amazing! All prices on fish and plants beat the other places I have been to as well. And in regards to the long waits to check out, with 3-4 people working at a time it can be tough for them to keep up only because it takes time to do what they do (get fish for a customer, water testing, etc). But they have been hiring more people. All in all, great place, great prices, and great staff. read more

They sold me a fish with Monster ICH!!! It was horrible, persistent, completely covered all the fish, was medication resistant, killed all but one of my fish :( You would think that a professional aquarium store like this would quarantine their fish before putting them in the display tanks and teach their employees what ich was, so they could avoid selling sick fish to customers. So disappointing. I've asked for a refund and help several times, they're horrible, won't let me speak to a manager, interrupt me, tell me it's my fault for not purchasing $40 more of equipment, sell me more fish, give me the run-around, are rude, shady people in general. Now that I'm deeper into fish than I was when I wrote my first revue, I thought it was fair to write a new one. After comparing salt water sections all over the valley, Aquarium Arts wins for largest variety of animals and is very competitive as far as pricing goes. Their live rock and accessories are also among the cheapest around. They have a few really cool large aquarium set ups for sale that would look awesome in anyone's home. They also have a wide variety of fresh water fish, but they don't have quite the variety as a few other local stores. I love their planted tank where they do have a large variety of healthy plants at good prices. Aquarium Arts has fast become my favorite all around fish store out there and when it comes time to stock my new salt water tank, this will be my first stop, despite being the furthest away from my house. I have been going to this this store off and on for the past 7 or so years. Their selection is one of the better I have seen for fresh water fish in the east valley. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful when asked. The main thing I always look for when I walk into a store is the cleanliness of their tanks. These guys take care and pride of their fish and it shows. The fish are healthy and you seldomly see dead fish in any of their tanks. I will admit I shop around, and have found less expensive fish and products but I seem to always come back here for my core supply. read more

I have been here a few times and I have had nothing but positive experiences while in there. The staff is knowledgeable, their life stock is always very healthy and their prices aren't crazy high. Now in a few of the reviews it mentions having a long wait, but I have never really found the wait for some help too long. Granted, I have stood around waiting for help on a few occasions, but that isn't the stores fault. When you have 6 people needing live stock and 3 people working the floor, there is literally nothing you can do about it. Especially because 80 percent of people wanting help, have questions. I went here looking for aquarium decor but I spent about 45 minutes checking out the place. It is roughly 75% salt water and 25% freshwater. They have a nice selection of tanks and stands (not easy to find in Phoenix). There appears to be a wide selection of parts for your aquarium. The salt water fish selection is quite good. They have a smaller collection of fresh water. They have a small selection of live rock. Prices seemed just okay. The most important thing is that I was offered help three times during my visit. Loved this place! Its clean and well lit. The tanks are clean and the fish look healthy. Lots of options for rock, driftwood, and the best selection of live plants. After reading a few things online, I called 3 different stores to learn about keeping live plants. Never go to a big box store for your aquarium needs again! I wasted so much time and money and was getting semi-accurate information at best. Aquarium Arts has been around for a really long time, and they know what they're doing! They are super knowledgeable, and also very ethical. I went in to buy all of the supplies I needed for a new 125 gallon fish tank and stood there for 30 minutes , ten of those at the checkout stand to imply I was serious and ready to speak with someone. Not once was I asked if I needed help or even a hello. Three people running around like all they care about it making sure they get to clock out right at 7pm. I'm pretty sure I was deliberately avoided so they could hurry up and leave. "Employee" mindset leaves something to be desired. Too bad they just lost a thousand dollars in sales. read more

My favorite fish store in Phoenix!!! The tanks are clean, cared for and loved. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and they are a locally owned company. Their prices are reasonable and not outrageous. So they may be a few bucks more than the local big box pet stores but what you get in return are healthy happy fish and isn't that why we are all in this hobby??? btw...if you get a chance ask for Chris...super nice and knowledgeable guy and helped get my 90 gallon up and running from lights to filter and heater to fish. read more

This was the first time I had been to Aquarium Arts. I came in to get a few fish for my 80-gallon freshwater tank. - The guy who helped me was great, knew exactly where to direct me after hearing what I was looking for. - The long haired guy (who I believe is the owner) also approached us and gave me more advice, along with actually telling me to put back a fish I was going to buy, who depends on tank algae for food (this is a fresh tank after being empty for a while). This place is ok but it has too many "experts" that jump to conclusions. Just got back with a Coral Beauty. I tested the water in the bag. Salinity was 1.018. In my estimation, that's way too low. Called to let them know but was given the song and dance of useless info, ending with questioning my refractometer calibration. I'm wasn't about to justify everything to him. I tried telling him; I was just letting them know. Again it was the song and dance and questioning my methods. Luckily, Coral Beauty's are hardy. My tank was at 1.025. Acclimation was way too lengthy, with that much a difference in salinity. There are plenty LFS around. I really doubt I'll be back. Too many issues trying to get proper water parameters for my reef tank. read more

Great plant availability and the staff is usually quick to ask if you need help. Though, the fish living conditions are not always great. Natasha is right regarding how they sell betta fish. I was told that was because they sold them so quickly and that they always told customers to get at least a 5gal and a heater. But I came back a month later and bought one of the fish who had been there last time. Was asked if I wanted to buy the little bowl too. I said no way, don't they need 3gal and a heater. Was told that only extreme fish keepers do that and it is unnecessary. Some members of the staff underestimate how educated hobbyists can be, though most are friendly and supportive. The plants I've purchased have always been snail free and decently priced. I'd love to see them transition towards keeping the fish in better condition. If you look up the best fish stores in Europe, you'll be amazed. I wish we had stored like that here! I'd go broke but it'd be worth it! read more

Hands down, this is the best LFS in town. I've been going here for over 4 years now. Chris is my go to person when I have any problems with my tank at home. They also take care of the fish. They won't sell you anything that is sick or it's being treated. Once they get a shipment in, nothing is for sell for at least 2 days. That speaks volume for this store. Other stores will sell you anything right away not caring about the fish. The prices are very reasonable as well! read more

I went to this place for a couple of snails and fish. A few hours later they all died and killed all the fish in my fish tank. And I had a beautiful tank this made me extremely sad and I wasted a lot of money on this. I would not recommend this. Also the snails they told me that the snails would eat all the algae and they didn't. read more

I was highly impressed with the cleanliness of the store as well as the tanks. I was searching to find discus fish and was having difficulty and did not want to purchase them through the internet and have them shipped. I called aquarium arts to inquire if they stocked discus and they let me know that they do. When I arrived I was happy to see a good variety of discus strains and that they appeared to be healthy. Since they can be shy and finicky I am glad to say that the fish I brought home today are swimming about with my other discus and feels right at home. I will definitely be back. read more

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. Everyone is SO friendly, helpful, and knowledgable about fish. I have just started my first freshwater tank and they have walked me through it every step of the way. They sell water testing kits, but will also test your water for free and inform you about what the different levels mean. This is the premiere aquarium store in the valley. Every since C won some goldfish at the state fair, he's been a nut about fish. Believe me, he has 8 or 9 books on fish and knows more than most people working at the big box stores. This store has some really cool fish and the employees are very friendly and helpful. One thing I've noticed is that there are not any or maybe 1 dead fish but that is a rarity. I always see dead fish at the big box stores and at really ALL of the other aquarium stores in Phoenix and Tucson. If you're interested in setting up an aquarium I would recommend 2 things. 1. come here and talk with the staff. Tell them what you want to accomplish and they will accommodate you the best they can. If they don't have the fish you're looking for they will order it. 2. head over to Macayo's about 2 blocks to the West on a weekend. Find the guy who makes balloon animals for the kids. Grab a table and then when he comes by talk with him about fish. He is definitely one of the most knowledgeable fish persons I've ever talked with. K and C love going there and chatting it up with him. He's a super nice guy and C gets to eat a cheese crisp. Winner winner Not having fish for dinner. I have been going to this place for over 20 years. Other stores come and go, but AA remains a staple for a lot of reasons. The employees are extremely knowledgeable and they literally have staff who can help you with any sort of aquarium you happen to keep. Livestock is very high quality and reasonably priced as well. They are traditionally known for their saltwater, and they routinely get animals other stores can't or won't. Nowadays, I'm pretty much a freshwater guy, and AA is great for that, too. They just expanded their system, and the owner has started bringing in incredible fish directly from South America, includIng wild caught Angelfish and L-number plecos. Not a plant specialty store, but they have a really strong selection with the hardware to support. There are other good stores in the valley, but AA is worth a trip from anywhere. read more

I have been a long time customer of Aquarium Arts and spent a great deal of money on my fishing equipment, and fish here. I recently purchased a fish and after two days it died, I called and asked if they take into consideration my loyalty and replace the $10 fish. Management declined my request and offered half off. Poor customer service because $10 fish is not worth loosing a lifetime customer. Very sad to say that i wont be returning because the employees are also so helpful and knowledgeable. read more
