My family has been going to the shea store for 5 years and we supported it thru the pandemic. We used to love this store and loved seeing it thrive with expansion of the business. But something has changed. We used to see the owners in the store and could chat with the knowledgeable staff. That is no longer true. My family recently had a very unpleasant experience with the Shea store where we were flat out lied to about a very minor purchase. After having spent many thousands of dollars supporting a store that we loved, this was hard to swallow. We like to support our LFS and do our best to support local business owners, but dishonesty shouldn't be tolerated. Really neat store! Nice and clean and great live stock! However I've been ignored for some reason by staff a few times. They are always working on tanks and I always have to search for them to buy what I need. Never a friendly hello or acknowledgement which would be nice. I am very new to anything aquatic, my wife loves fish and we wanted to get a new tank/aquarium. We spent the majority of the week visiting all the local aquatic and aquarium stores. Kona Reef by FAR is the best looking, the atmosphere and overall design was great it was VERY CLEAN. I did however feel sort of out of place here and wish I would have supported one of the other stores and purchased from a smaller business. The prices on the fish were far more reasonable than the other stores to some degree. The staff really helped and were very kind. I would recommend you get a tank/aquarium off of OfferUp or Petsmart just due to the absolute insane pricing of the aquariums. I'll be back but I will probably try the stores closer to me unless they don't have what I need. read more

Kona Reef has some pretty fish, but some ugly personality employees. We came in here on a weekend, and it looked almost like a ghost town in there. Even with barely any business happening we didn't get a single greeting, or anyone checking up asking if we needed any help. We had to track someone down to get some help (if you could have even called it that), and the guy couldn't even answer the question. It seemed like he barely even wanted to talk to us. Save your time and money and go somewhere like Aquarium Arts or Limited Edition Corals. At least there you'll get greetings, super knowledgeable staff, and much better deals. read more

This store is a long ways from my house but we needed some new fish for our saltwater tank and decided to make a day of it. We made the rounds of aquarium stores to see what everyone had. This store had great reviews and the pictures of the inside looked amazing so we drove the extra distance to check it out. The inside was amazing with the giant tree, koi pond and waterfall. The tanks were all nice and clean and well maintained but other than that we were not impressed. They have both fresh and saltwater fish which is a plus if you own both which we do. On the freshwater side they have two or three tanks with plants but they're all basically dead. I'm not sure why they keep them on display, anyone would be crazy to buy them and it really makes the place look bad. There was someone cleaning the tanks in that area but he never said hello or asked if we needed help. On the saltwater side there was also someone cleaning the tanks and they were friendly and asked if we needed help. After looking around we didn't see the specific fish we were looking for so I went back and asked if they had any and the guy had no idea what kind of fish that was....so not very knowledgeable. We ended up going back to the friendly and knowledgeable people at Aquarium Arts, they had everything we were looking for. read more

This place is great. I'm new to freshwater live plant set ups and came here to learn. Everyone here was nice and helpful. Trevor assisted me and got me set up with everything I needed. He explained everything to me. Super nice and patient. The store itself is amazing, everything anyone could possibly want or need to create amazing fresh or salt water tank set ups, it was really fun inside. One of the more unremarkable buildings you'll pass on Chandler Blvd however that's completely juxtaposed by what's inside. Great and friendly staff that obviously have a passion for the industry they are in. I, knowing not much about aquariums or their care, learned a lot in the 10 minutes I was there. Four plants and two Siamese Algae Eaters later and my betta is super happy. Definitely will go back when I want to add a few more critters and plants. 10/10 would u-turn again to get into the parking lot. read more

I walked into Kona, I'm eager to get a saltwater aquarium. We bought anemone, clownfish, coral, etc, with the help with John. My family came by a couple of times, John would always help us with a friendly and smiling face. Always very patient with us and kind. The store was very clean. Every animal looked very healthy and happy. In the end, we have a aquarium with clownfish, anemone, and coral all from Kona. This experience was the best! We will be coming here often. read more

The Chandler location is a nice-sized fish shop with tropical and saltwater fish. The selection of fish is better than in the box stores, and carry a variety of supplies, medications, water treatments, etc. They also have a good variety of tropical plants and saltwater coral. They also had a koi pond in the middle of the store. The tanks are very clean. None of the fish appeared sick; like at the box store pet shops. They have a koi pond in the middle of the store. You do need to know your fish as most of the prices for fish are on a board on the wall above all the fish tanks. Pricing is alittle higher than the box store, but not unreasonable. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. I could tell Noel was fairly new. He was able to answer some questions, but not all. I appreciate the fact that he was eager to help. He didn't pretend to know things and try to sell me stuff I didn't need. If he didn't know something he was quick to seek help from another employee. Tom was very helpful and knowledgeable. He wasn't pushy to sell me anything and provided great information. I'll be back. read more

This place is awesome. I'm a complete amateur and wish I had come here first but I went to petco. Long story short- I was given tons of bad info and killed the fish I bought. It's been many years since I've owned an aquarium and needed some guidance. We looked at several stores, but looked no further when we came across Kona Reef, Chandler location. The staff has all been very helpful, but in particular, Caitlin helped us find the right set-up and has continued to help us with our water parameter questions and selecting the perfect inhabitants for our freshwater aquarium. The store is beautiful, the tanks are well-kept, and they have some unique fish as well. We live about 45 minutes away from the store and have other local fish stores closer to us; however, we always come back here. Highly recommend! read more

You know those people who work at pet adoption agencies and won't even let you look at a dog unless you have 50 acres and plan on feeding it steak tartare every day? Yeah, this was the same thing but with fish. I'm all for due diligence because I know a lot of people think you can stuff goldfish in bowls with no filter, but every fish I asked about there was some gatekeeping response. read more

I don't think I'll be back to this location. First the phone seems to never work, so we ended up just driving there anyways. After getting there not one employee acknowledged us, I finally had to stop the younger kid to see if he can help us. He was so short and said "I'll let you keep looking around" another employee was doing tank maintenance or something, going in and out the back and was worried more about what he was doing then the customers that were inside. Once what I think were some regular customers came in the employees of course helped them right away. The younger kid was in such a hurry when I asked for help just to go talk to another customer and they were just talking about the Halloween decorations. I get that employees have responsibilities while working but they are avoiding customers to talk to regulars. I'm a paying customer also and I've spent a good amount of money at this location. We waited around another 15 minutes and finally just left. I tried calling later that day to speak to a manger but of course the phone didn't work. read more
