Our family of 4 arrived on a very wet and rainy Saturday around 6 PM. This specific location in Mountain View normally has a long line and waitlist since they do not take reservations. We were pleasantly surprised that the wait was not very long at all. Probably due to the weather. The normally packed parking lot across the street was almost empty. We waited about 15-20 minutes before being sat at my favorite table near the window. We always order the extra special nigiri and a few additional pieces à la cart. We were lucky enough to try the 4 piece Japan fish combo special this time as well. My youngest orders the galbi and a side of rice. The galbi was extremely thick! I was so surprised. She really enjoyed it. Every table was packed per usual, including the sushi bar. I especially appreciate this family friendly spot for it's consistent service and value. You can't beat the nigiri special price! Just be prepared to wait if you arrive during prime dining hours. A few weeks ago, I stopped by Sushi Tomi for the first time in years. It was lunch time, and I was solo, so I took advantage of getting seated a little sooner by sitting at the sushi bar. Even though this was a Thursday afternoon, the waitlist was just as long as I remembered it. Sadly, the sushi was not of the same caliber as the last time I visited. Several of the sushi niguri items I ordered tasted as if they'd been made in advance. I know many restaurants do that with some very popular types of rolls, but Sushi Tomi has always seemed a cut above that practice. The ikura nigiri I ordered looked "deflated," like when the roe sits out a little too long. The taste of eveything was just not as great. Was recommended to us by a friend as an authentic Japanese sushi spot and it was a great experience! We got the lunch combo (with tonkatsu and saba) and both were pretty good! They were seasoned nicely, but we found that they were a little more on the dry side, and relied more heavily on the sauces. We also got the Extra Special Chirashi Sushi. I'm not sure what the distinction between the different tiers of the chirashi were, but the Extra Special version featured both Uni and Ikura. The sashimi was very fresh and they were generous in terms of the portion size. Based on this, I would recommend going more towards the sushi/sashimi dishes and avoid the rice/bento dishes. We came here on a Saturday night and there was a wait, even at 7 pm. There was a line out the door and it was cold but we managed. A line says good things about the food right? We were seated after approximately 20 minutes. It was cozy and warm inside but there was enough space in between the tables to be comfortable. The staff is so courteous and helpful while also being efficient. The menu not having descriptions of the rolls felt like a little bit of a gamble but we went for it. Definitely one of my favorite sushi spots in all of South Bay for casual nigiri and sushi rolls. All of the sashimi are so consistently fresh and high quality. The salmon pieces are so thick and amazing. The uni was so flavorful and tasted like the ocean (in a good way). Everything was super great value for the price too! One of my favourite date night is four dollar sign omakase. But obviously that's not realistic on a frequent basis. When I'm craving for one of those date nights but don't want to spend four dollar signs, we go to Sushi Tomi!! We always know that we'll be happy because that's what Sushi Tomi is - reliable! We always ONLY get their nigiris (from their a-la-carte nigiri menu, not the sets) and we sometimes think that the freshness of their fish rival other high end sushi restaurants. IMO this is the best way to eat here - only get their nigiri's and try your best to order from their handwritten special fish menu. They probably make less money from fresh nigiri than a cooked bento box so that's why I think it's a better bang for your buck!! Their scallops and tuna are very good - the baseline for a good sushi spot ;) Uni can vary sometimes but still very good for a day to day spot. We also love the Eel Roll!!!! We get it each time and I always alternate between the nigiri's and the eel roll for the perfect bites! We've never tried their omakase as I enjoy selecting my preferred nigiris instead at a place like this. Before going, set your expectations and know that it will usually be at least a 30-40 minute wait for weekend dinners. Though annoying, I think it's a testament that I'm not the only one that think this is a great place! There is no online waitlist, you must be physically present to put your name down. I find that the wait here is longer than the San Jose location and the tables are tighter. The volume can also be quite loud here. However, we still opt to come to this location sometimes because we love walking over to Rootstock afterwards for some wine! While I love the nigiri's, a growth area for them is their service. They can be slow at times with getting items (such as chopsticks or refilling tea) but it doesn't stop us from thinking that's it's one of our favourite spots! read more

I wasn't sure if it was a special version of miso soup or just a usual house soup that accompanied it but I appreciated the pieces of cooked salmon in the soup. I also requested that my sashimi only be salmon instead of a mix with tuna and they honored the request just fine. The salmon sampler was absolutely wonderful -- they were featuring Hakodate salmon which was to die for. I need to make my way to Hakodate now, or hope Sushi Tomi brings it over more often. The deep fried chilean sea bass was a bit dry though -- the mustard was overpowering and one of the filets was half in the sauce ... the egg salad-like tartar sauce was great and I could eat it on its own however.
