Also, don't know how but the servers were able to deliver the food to us without us placing a number on our table or giving our name. Great restaurant in Hayes Valley that really surprised me! I didn't expect much, but every dish was elevated and it's clear the chefs here have some impressive culinary chops. Even the veg/fruit are well-sourced, with some salads featuring produce from local farmers like K&J Orchards. Curly fries were great and you can't go wrong... same with the fish sandwich! The biggest surprise was the Grilled Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp. The shrimp were sweet, smoky, and perfectly cooked, and the salad had so many different flavors (sweet, tangy, salty, bitter) that made it way more complex than I was expecting. Just came here for a sundae ($9.50) after dinner. It was good, nothing out of this world. Did really like the marshmallow topping though! Service was good. Normally would try more food before I review, but needed to also share how many MICE were outside on the patio. We wanted to sit outside but there were way too many mice that we HAD to go inside. Pretty sure we saw at least 10 mice scurry and it was quite unpleasant. My friend and I needed a spot to catch up on gossip before taking in a show nearby. We settled on Arbor, which for some odd reason I had never been to before. After ordering at the counter by the door, we chose a nice spot in the garden in the back, which provides a beautiful and romantic setting. Live music was playing during our time there. Indoor seating is also available but most people sat outside on the night of my visit, which was a bit warm. A few tables had folks enjoying bottles of wine with some snacks. Overall this is a nice casual spot to dine alone or in a group, large or small, for a quick meal and/or a drink or two. The menu has small plates, salads, burgers, sandwiches and dessert along with a selection of wine and beer. Think comfort food with a California touch. I ordered a Cobb salad with an Arnold Palmer to drink. The food was delivered too our table. The salad was a good size and had fresh and crisp lettuce, tender chicken, a perfectly cooked hard boiled egg, blue cheese, avocado and bacon. I thought the prices were fair for the quality and quantity of food, especially in this area. I've eaten at many of the other restaurants in Hayes Valley and cannot say the same of the other spots that seem to adjust their pricing to take advantage of the theater crowd. I used to come to Arlequin as a kid after music school, and grew up on the sticky buns next to the coffee counter. Now, unfortunately, Arlequin is no more, but in its place is Arbor, something a bit more grown up that focuses on all-day foods that pair well with a beverage of your choice (wine, beer, something non-alcoholic). Some things are the same. The servers and kitchen staff are still really nice and the ambiance is still chill. The back patio is still one of the top places to sit down and hang out in San Francisco. Other things are different: for example, the menu that rotates by the seasons. My old Caesar Salad fixation meal has now evolved into the delicious Falafel Bowl, which feels less like a fixation meal now because the fruit that the falafel comes with changes based on what is in season. (I've had the persimmon and citrus ones so far -- I'm not sure if they will have more but I am expecting more.) I'll keep coming back, Arbor somehow still feels familiar while being different -- perhaps commentary on the passage of time? Overall an excellent restaurant operated by the same people as absinthe. The food and drinks are impeccable and at a more palatable price point for lunch fare, though to expect to pay the ~$20/item price that Hayes Valley usually charges. The restaurant operates as counter service, with the menu posted way above the register. One tip I have is to include menus at the counter so smaller folk don't have to crane their necks too much. The Cobb salad is hearty and filling, with lots of protein. My one gripe is that the soft boiled egg, which I usually love, may not be the best choice for a cold salad. It's just adds a lot of extra cold-ness to the meal. Like adding an ice cube to a salad. Is that something that bothers people? It certainly bothered me a bit. The fish sandwich my partner ordered was delicious and I ate half of it before he had a chance to rethink offering me a bite. Oops! The cc fries are great too, very very good portions and even more filling. I do have one complaint. The outdoor patio is magnificent and the ambience unbeatable--nowhere like it. The guitarist playing on weekends is lovely. However, at intervals, he will stop playing, announce, and then go from table to table soliciting tips. Remember the 90's, man? The Spice Girls. Blink-182. Whitney. And Hayes Valley was like my place to chill. I still kinda miss Arlequin because it was an amenably casual go-to cafe. The back patio was a popular hangout, especially on Friday evenings after work when people got loose-lipped about their colleagues. The Absinthe Group decided to close if prior to the pandemic when they couldn't make it work economically. They opened Arbor in its place and focused on plant-based fare. The patio is gone in favor of takeout, and I gave it a try. I ordered the $19 Grilled Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp Bowl which was quite a treat with the plump BBQ shrimp on a skewer over a bowl filled with kale and arugula, peaches, braised fennel, and grilled corn with a grilled lemon vinaigrette on the side (photo: https://bit.ly/3A37yc8). Arbor is a great go to for a bite, a drink , to chill by yourself, a romantic meetup or small group. The place exudes charm and the eclectic menu has something for everybody. Some things have actually emerged from the pandemic improved upon. Case in point, Arbor. Though I believe that ownership has not changed here, the name did as did the addition of a more robust kitchen, to turn the menu into something much more enticing. Arlequin, the neighbor/owner, is known for their decadent burgers and though I didn't have one of those here at Arbor, a quick scan of other tables told me that this is a desirable menu option. The two of us ordered a Cobb Salad ($17) and a Warm Root Vegetable Caesar "Salad" ($16) which I'm still full from consuming some 14 hours later. Their salads might be pricey but you get a whole lot of meal at that price and they're freakin' delicious. The Cobb is littered with chunky, high quality bacon and a soft-boiled egg amongst the usual Cobb ingredients. The other "salad" is a cornucopia of flavors: brussels sprouts, focaccia croutons, shaved parmesan, and a garlic anchovy vinaigrette. It has no lettuce but you won't miss it; this thing is an umami bomb. Arbor sports plenty of parklet and indoor seating but surely you come here to bask in the glory of their backyard garden patio. It is truly a sparkling little hidden gem; that has not changed. Last night the back garden featured a two-man band playing great music that was quiet enough to hold a conversation over but loud enough to enjoy. I'd be remiss if I didn't also add how to best enjoy those salads and that garden. Though you can easily order wine along with your meal at Arbor, you miss half the fun if you don't instead walk to attached-at-the-hip Arlequin Wine Merchant to let them guide you to a great bottle or glass of something with which to make your meal even more special. Hayes Valley has a million choices but this space has never failed to bring joy. With the addition of some very good food, the combo is almost irresistible. read more

My friend told me about Arbor as we walked by one day and we dipped inside to take a look at the backyard seating area and I was stunned. The lights at night and ambiance were so beautiful and I knew I had to come back. The perfect date spot or just a place to chat with your friends! So the other day I was walking by again and stepped inside to read my book and take in the sunny evening. I got a glass of white wine ($13) and it was the perfect thing to sip on while I read. I also ordered the fried chicken sandwich with a lettuce wrap and it still had so much flavor I loved it. I definitely recommend this! When happy hour hit, my friends joined me and we ordered fries ($8) and their HH $5 sangrias which was sooooo good. I also like that you can get a bottle of wine from the wine merchant attached and open it up in the backyard area with some friends. Arrived around 5:50pm, and there was a short line, but it moved quickly despite there being just one register. In terms of seating, there are a couple of two-person tables out front, several tables for four inside (along with bar seating), and a backyard with a number of tables. If you have a group larger than four, outside is your best bet. After ordering, I checked out the backyard, and it was full though tables started to clear up here and there over the next 30-45 minutes, so it's possible that some of the backyard diners were there for an early dinner or there for happy hour (4-6pm W-F). There's also an option to over via some QR code on the outdoor tables, but I didn't see that until later so can't comment more on how that works, but if there's a line out the door for ordering, finding a seat and trying to order from there might be the move. Tried their curly fries, rose spritz, and falafel and strawberry salad, and all three options were solid. Not sure about the ownership, but this seems to be Arlequin reopened. It is fantastic: the food is quite good and the atmosphere (particularly in the back courtyard) remains exceptional. If you've never been, the back tables are surrounded by large trees enclosed between several buildings. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was tasty: chicken was lightly battered but extremely crisp and subtly flavorful. The brioche bun was soft yet crisp. The cucumber slaw was delicate and creamy, and complemented the fried chicken nicely. I also got curry curly fries with curry ketchup, which was awesome. My wife got the falafel with fuyu persimmon. The falafel had what seemed to be some wild rice mixed with the garbanzo (which gave it a nice texture) and the outer batter was crisped with either amaranth or quinoa. It was really good. read more

I don't know why this place isn't rated higher. I feel like maybe people just haven't found the dish that works best for them. The one thing that I love about this place is that their menu is unique to a lot of other similar type of places. Also, the service has just been impeccable every time I'm there. I've had multiple things here and it's all been good. But then one thing I will constantly come back for here is their shrimp salad with the fresh peas and arugula. I have only eaten the falafel based burger, twice. It's yummy--and I would really love to see more all-plant based menu items (or at least "vegan possible", as I'm seeing sometimes at restaurants) menu items.
