This was one of the more interesting Korean restaurants I've been to in New York. I wouldn't necessarily call this fusion but I also wouldn't call it traditional Korean food, somewhere in that in between. We sat in their outdoor seating area, which was actually really cute, it was like a shack as opposed to an open patio. The menu wasn't super big but was really diverse. We got the chicken, the salmon noodles, and beef tartare. This place is definitely more tapas/small places in my opinion but maybe I just didn't order the right things. All in all since most of our dishes were seafood/raw I was a little skeptical, but everything was really fresh and well seasoned! Spicy pork with friend squid: some of the most tender and fresh pork I've ever tried, super flavorful gochujang sauce Mak hwe: suuuuuper fresh raw fish and great ssamjang Soft shell crab: some of the crispiest and lightest fried batter, the juxtaposition of the textures with the flavors was incredible!!! It is my go-to spot whenever I am craving hwe and it never disappoints. The Mak-hoe kicked things off - freshness at its finest. The fried soft-shell crab added a delightful crunch and the Dolsot Bap brought an unique twist to bibimbap with fish roe and sea urchin cream on a sizzling hot stone. On those chilly days, the spicy fish stew and pork soup is perfect. As for desserts, both the Omija Bingsoo and Corn Crème Brûlée are yummy, wrapping up the meal on a sweet note. Very delicious and comforting Korean food. It's a pretty small restaurant so although reservations aren't difficult to come by, def recommend making a reservation beforehand. Food is fairly pricey but worth it I think. My favorite dishes were the beef tartare and the raw scallops (very complex flavors and very fresh). I'd had this place on my bucket list for a while and finally got a reservation a couple weeks ago. We wanted to try a variety of things, but in the end all of the beef dishes looked so good that we ended up ordering mostly beef dishes except for the mak-hwe LOL I think my favorite dish by far was the beef sooyook: the soup was light and refreshing, not too salty or rich, and the beef was so tender!! The bulgogi was a little too sweet, but the meat quality was amazing. I also really, really enjoyed the beef tartare, which had the most delicious dressing and texture from the crispy pieces mixed in. This may be my new favorite Korean restaurant in town! In a city full of Korean restaurants, it's so special because their menu consists of Busan inspired dishes. It has a cozy gastropup type of vibe, perfect for groups of friends to come together to drink and share small plates. They recommended 2-3 plates to share, and that was perfect for our group. Every dish we ordered was a banger! My favorite of the night was the Dolsot Al-Bap, their bibimbap with fish roe and uni cream. The cream made it so light and delicate, and you can definitely taste the sweetness of the uni without it being over powering. The DIY scallop gimbap and the Mak hoe was so fun to eat. They're both wraps that you can make on the table and best of all, super fresh. The Yook-hoe (beef tartare with baby octopus) was awesome, the crispy fried onions gave it a fun contrast in texture, and packed a punch in flavor. It is a little small though. I was very excited that we managed to get a reservation for Ariari during my recent trip to NYC. We had a reservation for 5:15, and the small restaurant quickly filled up with reservations. Overall I would give the restaurant 5 stars for flavors and 4 stars for portion sizes -- the dishes were generally smaller than what I expected based on the photos in the menu -- most of the dishes were about half the size we expected based on the photos. We did order 5 dishes (came out to $60 per person including tax and tip), so it ended up being quite filling. Delicious, would def get again: - The spicy fish stew ($28) was like an elevated maeuntang. The fish was some sort of bass and it was super tender and rich, making the dish quite luxurious. The broth tasted both traditional and elevated. The sujebi (probably a purchased dried version) was perfectly chewy and absorbed the flavor of the soup that was a highlight. The clam was also good. I would absolutely get this again. Totally worth the price. - The seafood butter gui ($19) was another one that definitely looked bigger in the photos -- the shrimp and scallops are quite small, but they are very tasty. Perfectly cooked, tender, plump, with nice browning, and not overly rich despite the butter. I would definitely get this again. Great, might get again: - The yook hwe ($15) was really good! The baby octopus added a nice chew. The dish tasted a bit like bulgogi, but chewier and raw (in a good way). It's very small, though. Good, probably wouldn't get again: - The scallop DIY gimbap ($26) had good individual components, but I'm not sure if they went together that well -- the scallop got lost in the strong flavors of the squid jeotgal and apple kimchi. The relative amounts of ingredients were well balanced. This was good but not a must-get IMO. - The braised pork cheek ($25) had pork that was tender but a bit dry, and the meat didn't absorb the flavor of the broth. The broth was a standard dwenjang with napa cabbage -- authentic, but not very strong flavors. I wouldn't get this again. - We also tried the Maesil cocktail ($14), which tasted pretty watered down and didn't have much alcohol flavor. I wouldn't get this again. So yummy! My personal favorites were the Dolsot Al Bap and the Duck Bulgogi. I'm normally not a huge fan of roe but I felt it was super good in the rice along with the cream sauce that wasn't too heavy. A really interesting dish. The Duck Bulgogi was really surprising as well. I feel duck can be pretty gamey sometimes but Ariari makes it sooooo tender and it really tasted just like beef bulgogi because of how tender it was. Surprisingly, I was able to get a table without a reservation and without much of a wait. They recommended ~2 dishes per person to share, but my party of 3 was comfortably full with 5 dishes (though some of them were larger mains). They started us off with some homemade fresh kimchi salad, which was fresh Napa cabbage tossed in a spicy-creamy-kimchi sauce (not fermented). We also got the Yook-Hoe for starters, and it featured a beef tartare and (cooked) octopus in a sesame oil and topped with fried shallots. While I appreciated the seasoning and the chewiness of the meat, it felt like something was missing - perhaps a carrier like chips/bread/etc. I've never had duck bulgolgi and it was very tender. The sauce had a familiar gochujang taste instead of the classic bulgolgi sauce. The Dolsot Al-Bap was the star of the show! I normally don't love adding uni onto dishes because it can overshadow things, but this time, it definitely accentuated the thicc urchin cream. If you are a fan of fish roe, this dish is for you too! I only wish they had a little more seaweed in the mix. The Glazed Jang-Eo was a combination of a lightly battered and fried eel and eggplant, glazed in a sweet and sticky sauce. My only wish was that it had more eel pieces, as a large portion of pieces were eggplant. Lastly, the Hap-Cheon Pork Soup was a hearty, savory, umami soup with a light herbal taste and tender slices of different cuts of pork. Some might argue it is on the saltier side, but it was perfectly balanced for me. For drinks, the Kket-Nip was sweet and refreshing because of the incorporation of the perilla leaves. The cocktail menu was interesting - a wide offering of classic drinks with an interesting take. The food was delicious. Be sure to order a few plates as they are a little one the smaller end. Grab a couple friends to accompany you so you can have a variety. The Mak-hwe and Yook-hwe were delicious - very flavorful and I loved the variety in textures. The lotus root salad was nice, but didn't feel quite as special as the other dishes. The Glazed Jang-eo/eggplant and eel was probably my least favorite - I found it a little too sweet and our serving didn't have much eel in it. The Dolsot Al-Bap was interesting. I've not had bibimbap like this before. The stone bowl was scorching hot, which nicely crisps up the rice. Though be careful not to take too long in eating this otherwise the rice will start to burn/get very very crispy. It wasn't as flavorful and I hoped and the octopus wasn't super chewy and crunchy. It kind of felt like chewing a rubber band. The stone pot rice wasn't flavorful and a bit disappointing because it was more mushy than dry. The fish stew was pretty good, but it definitely was small and didn't hit my expectations for soup.
