Made reservations on a Thursday at 5:30pm and it got crowded quick, so would highly recommend making reservations. I absolutely loved the food. The star of the show was definitely the crispy corn pancake since it was delicious, crispy, flavorful, and unlike anything I've ever had before. I thought it was nice that they gave tteokbokki for free as an appetizer. The seafood udon was creamy and delicious but I did taste some sand in the mussel. Finally got to check out Take31 after having it on my list for forever. I think if I was in college or early 20s I would've really liked this place back then. It's one of those spots that are simple/bar korean food forward with slight modernization/americanization and it might be best used as a place before going out to carb up, because the portions are large but nothing really stood out to me flavor-wise making me want to come back just to have the food on its own. The jajangmeyon was tasty although a little basic. The corn fritter was my favorite, as it was hefty and a little sweet with a nice crunch but didn't wow me either. The chicken and fries are what you would expect. I think this place is good if you are looking for volume/portion size but not necessarily great for a one on one date or dinner where the focus is the food. The frozen alcoholic drinks were tasty enough though I didn't get a buzz. This place has been around for a long time, and I typically love all of Hand Hospitality's creations, but can't say this one is my favorite. However, it has its own role in the community and definitely still think it's worth coming if you fit the demographic I described. I went to this popular Korean place which is from the folks behind Her Name is Han next door along with a whole lot of other Korean restaurants a good while ago as per most of my recent reviews. By comparison to next door, the inside is more industrial looking which is a unique touch and while Han does nice versions of Korean classics, this place does more spins on food from Korean Pocha/drinking culture. The food by comparison here is a bit heavier and a bit richer but I liked it as well but I have preferred some other spots. I believe, though I lack a photo, that I shared a bottle of Chestnut Makgeolli with someone else and liking it a lot. The one banchan they give is excellent consisting of Ddukbokki, or rice cakes served in this case with eomuk/fish cakes which had a good chew and a good spice to it. My favorite of the food overall was the Pork Belly Rice Crepe Wraps for $25.95 consisting of grilled pork belly covered with toasty injeolmi and soybean powder and served with homemade pickles. The fatty pork belly pairs really nicely with the chewy rice crepe on top while the injeolmi and soybean powder add some sweetness and nuttiness. The pickles help with the richness and overall, it's fantastic. We also liked the Crispy Corn Pancake for $15.95 which consisted of a sweet & savory pancake with corn, cheese & Cajun powder. The sweetness from the corn wass balanced out by the salty cheese with the powder adding a nice little kick. Sure, it's a big greasy but it's delicious and I would recommend it. The Spicy Soft Tofu Soup/sundubu jjigae had Korean chewy noodles, beef finger ribs, shiitake, Korean chives, and a poached egg was large and tasty. The flavors were more bold by comparison to SGD with the beef inside being tender and well flavored. I'm not that surprised that their jjigae are good as the the best dish next next door are usually said stews. The other people seemed to enjoy the popular Cod Roe Seafood Udon for $23.95 consisting of udon noodles sautéed in spicy cod roe cream sauce with shrimp, squid and clams which I couldn't eat due to my cephalopod allergy. They complemented the chewy noodles and liked the sauce and overall compared it nicely to the various mentaiko udon spots. The Spicy Short Rib Lasagna for $25.95 with braised spicy short rib, lasagna, and Japanese pumpkin with bechamel gochujang sauce topped with blended cheese had and interesting mix of spiciness and sweetness almost like Yangnyeom chicken though I would say a bit more sweet than spicy. It was a bit rich but I liked it and it was plenty big enough to share. The Garlic Crusts & Spicy Chicken for $25.95 with deep-fried boneless chicken tossed in spicy sauce served with crispy garlic crusts was good. The chicken had a good crunch and a bit of a kick though not as much as I would expect with plenty of garlic flavor of course. The Short Rib Chapaguri for $20.95 consisting of Korean ramyeon noodles with special jjajang sauce, greater Omaha short rib, onion, scallion & fried egg sounded better than it tasted. This version of chapaguri, made famous by Parasite, had a lighter jjajang sauce than I'm used to being not as salty or rich compared to places such as Hyo Dong Gak among others which was surprising as the rest of the food was so bold. Also with beef was the Bulgogi Black Garlic Fried Rice for $15.95 consisting of fried rice with bulgogi, black garlic oil, and scallions. The fried rice was a bit small compared to the other dishes but was tasty with a hint of sweetness and richness coming from the black garlic and bulgogi. I wish there was a bit more beef but it was good enough. We also got the Rolled-up Cod Roe Omelette for $18.95 consisted of Korean-style rolled up omelette with cod roe & cream sauce. I wish the cod roe was a bit stronger in the dish but the egg was nice and fluffy. It was alight overall. Both this and next door have faults but also a lot of merits. If you're looking for richer food and don't mind a less spiced/complex flavor palate, I would recommend this place. However, if you want more unique flavors, Her Name is Han is better along with spots such as Hojokban and others. As I prefer the latter, I prefer their other restaurants but this is all palate and I certainly preferred the food here over other pochas (will have to compared to Dangol soon however.) Nestled in the outskirts of ktown, we happened to be waking by when we saw the menu outside and were instantly drawn into the small nook and cozy feel of Take31. We left our name and were called back soon after but there was actually quite a wait after that because people were still at the table we were going to be seated at - it would be nice if it were more accurate with the call back timing. The dinner starts off with some tteokbokki as the banchan served. We ordered the roe omelette which was actually very nice. Not too fishy, with roe inside and out. Soft, warm, and smooth. The seafood roe udon was our favorite dish. Creamy with a light clam/roe flavoring, would definitely get again when coming back. It comes with a couple small shrimp pieces in addition to the larger one, some squid?, and a few clams. I usually don't like udon but this was an exception! The pajeon was ok - it comes with rice shrimp chips on top which in my opinion take away from the dish more than it should. It's like covering a pizza with potato chips, there's no need! It would've been fine without it - still not bad, though makes it extra oily. They have a new dish that is basically a deconstructed pizza - with beef, tomatoes, kimchi and cheese on top. This was ok - the taste was good, but the cheese was not as cheesy as we were hoping to start. They put their own spin on some of your favorite dishes, and we were definitely fans of it. We ordered 3 dishes, the tofu soup, the clam pancakes, and the sliced pork. All 3 dishes were absolutely amazing! The tofu soup was delicious, probably one of the best tofu soups I've ever had. The broth was so flavorful, and the ingredients were abundant. The tofu was so soft, but still had a bite. I wish I ordered a bowl of rice but the soup was a slam dunk. The clam pancakes, simple but delicious. It was fairly thin, but the flavor was amazing. The sliced pork, was the highlight of the night. Each piece was cooked perfectly, combined with the green onion shavings and the sauce, OMG. We're usually not huge fans of pork, but this dish blew our minds. Everything exceeded our expectations! We can't wait to come back and try the other dishes on the menu. First of all, Take31 was accommodating when I made multiple changes with my reservations including when two people in our party were running 20 minutes late, but seated us right when the full party arrived. As a large party, they allocated 2 hours for us but never had us check out even when we stayed longer. To start off, we had two carafes of the homemade signature makgulli (Korean rice wine) ($17.95) --one in white peach and one in chestnut flavor. The flavors were very light that you hardly taste it, but they were refreshing and easy to drink. Note that they are ice shaved, so they have more of a smoothie consistency. All tables also had complimentary tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), which was great when you're hungry before the food arrives. Between the 7 of us, we ordered the Chicken Gizzard with Honey Garlic Butter ($15.95), Crispy Corn Pancake ($15.95), Pork Belly Rice Crepe Wraps ($25.95), Cod Roe Seafood Udon ($23.95), Shortrib Chapaguri ($20.95), Spicy Galbi Stew ($32.95). This was the perfect amount for us to each have a few bites. The favorites were definitely the noodle dishes and the stew. The rest of the appetizers were still good, but would try some other items next time. The rice crepe was a bit grainy though, which was interesting.
