This was our first visit to Aromas, and what a first impression it made! I would describe the decor as serene-- understated, clean, and lovely. Service was just the right balance of attentive without being intrusive. Our friendly server checked in a few times to make sure we had everything we needed and that we were enjoying our meal. And yes, we were enjoying every dish from appetizer to entrees. The food tasted incredibly fresh and was perfectly seasoned. Been far too long since I've updated this review... we have since been back to Aromas more times than I can count. It's one of our very, very favorite restaurants. Reading back over my last review, I had a question mark: Answer: dine-in and the service is outstanding. They even have a new happy hour menu, with delicious South Asian twists on bar classics. Take-out is still fantastic, and we do it all the time. Wine Wednesdays bring their own specials, and they have a musician in the corner playing live. The vibe is great-- laid back elegance. You can wear jeans without a worry, but you'll feel equally comfortable in a tux and tails. Great place for celebrations, or just to watch some football on the telly. Worth a regular spot on your rotation if you're local; worth the drive if you are not! read more

Another visit to the amazing Aromas of India. This time the service wasn't as smooth unfortunately, but the food was still delicious. Upon arrival, there was only one worker in sight. She was working the bar making drinks while also helping a very demanding customer. She got us seated after a few minutes and asked if we preferred a booth or table. We chose a booth, but then she realized the only open one was still covered in dirty dishes, so we ended up at a table instead. Not a huge deal. This time she asked if we had dined here before and reminded us about the call button system they use for service. After looking through the menu, we ordered the mango lassi, chicken tikka masala (level 4 spice), lamb korma (level 3 spice), garlic cheese chili naan, and paneer pakora. We were pretty hungry after a long day and tried using the call button multiple times, waiting in between, but no one came over for a while. We honestly started wondering if it was even working. Eventually a server came by and took our order. It would have been faster if I just waved down one of the employees walking around. Our drinks came out first... on a robot. We didn't see this during our last visit, so it was interesting but also a little confusing. I've seen these at some restaurants, but here it didn't feel very efficient since an employee still had to take the drinks off the robot and hand them to us. It also took away from the cozy, local feel of the restaurant. On top of that, the employee made a comment about my husband ordering a Coca Cola saying it wasn't a good choice, which felt a little unprofessional since it's literally on the menu. The mango lassi itself was really good though. Super creamy with a fresh mango flavor. Not overly sweet, which I liked. I do wish it was colder since it leaned more toward room temperature and it was a hot day. I ordered water as well, but it came with what looked like a piece of cilantro in it, so I had to ask for another. At that point I was just waiting for the food. The paneer pakora was still as good as I remembered (see my previous review for details). The chicken tikka masala was really solid. It had a strong tomato base, was well balanced, and the level 4 spice was perfect. It also came with a good amount of tender chicken pieces. A lot more than our butter chicken came with last visit. The standout this time was the lamb korma, which is a creamy curry made with a base of cashews, spices, and yogurt. It leans more mild and slightly sweet compared to other curries. This one was incredibly rich and flavorful. The lamb was super tender and the cashews on top added an extra layer of texture and sweetness. I've never had this dish before but I'm really glad I tried it. There were definitely some hiccups with service this time, and I'm not exactly sure what kind of vibe they're going for. I can still see myself coming back because the food is that good, but not everyone is looking for that casual, joking interaction with an employee during their meal. I love the atmosphere of this restaurant, both inside & out! It is presented with a mini red carpet at the door and they use robots to help serve food and drinks. They allow dogs in the outdoor patio, which has beautiful decorations and heat lamps available. The food was incredible, I really enjoyed the garlic cheese naan dipped in the butter chicken curry. 100/10. I grew up in Los Angeles so I'm fortunate enough to have tried authentic foods from all over the world. Outside of LA, this is by far the best Indian food I have ever had. All of the food was delicious. I'm Central American. Our cuisine does not include spicy foods. But growing up in a rich Mexican culture in LA, spice is life. Be warned! Mexican spice has nothing on Asian spice. Don't even try. Stick to medium spice. Your toilet paper will thank you. It was very cool to see a robot It travels around delivering drinks to tables. A wonderful novelty. But nothing can replace human contact. A robot wouldn't have let me sub white meat lol. Ambiance is upscale and classy. The bathrooms were spacious, clean, and tidy. Great experience. The food was amazing, the staff were sweet and I even enjoyed the conversation getting to know the staff. The mango and strawberry lassi were smooth, not too sweet at all. We ordered pakoray, lamb in curry, and I got the tandoori shrimp. I would definitely come back here. Special thanks to Abipsa! She was so sweet and accommodating. We celebrated my uncles birthday and he suffers from schizophrenia so it's often really difficult for him to relax in public, but everyone was kind and supportive during our time there. Okay -this place hands down can't even compete with my fave spots in LA... it beats them! I absolutely dream about this spot. It deserves more than 5 stars to be honest. Service was an absolute 1000/10 - no complaints at all. The inside is spotless, super welcoming, and very spacious. The table setup was so nice and perfectly arranged. We started with the samosas, which were amazing - from the crispy outside to the flavorful filling and great sauces! I wish I remembered the name of what my friend ordered, but the meat was cooked to perfection (pretty sure it was chicken tandoori). I almost wanted to steal her plate. Me and my partner have come here maybe 5 times and we will keep coming back!!!! The dosas are crispy and delicious, the momo is super good, And the tikka masala is always super good (even at a level 7 spice haha) We also always get each a mango lassi, an order of samosas, and garlic naan! First off, the waiters and hostess were very friendly and accommodating. They were understaffed so everything was really slow but at no fault of their own. Both of the waiters were new to the restaurant and didn't know much about the menu which lead to some confusion. I ordered a dish called Chicken Choila which to my surprise and the surprise of the waiters is cooked then slightly chilled to room temperature before being served. You can imagine the confusion, everyone's food comes out hot and fresh and mine was room temperature. I asked and all of the staff said that wasn't correct but the chef insisted it was the correct way to serve it. Turns out, he was right lol. To be fair, it was delicious but it takes forever to prepare. It took close to an hour to get our food because it has to be cooked then chilled. The food was flavorful and the portions were good. The spice levels are a little weak. I ordered an 8 and my wife ordered a 4. Neither were spicy like we expected. Next time I'll go for a 10. The manager ended up taking my dish off the bill because she thought it was incorrect as well which wasn't necessary but it was a nice gesture. This problem could be corrected with a menu note or making sure the staff knows so they can warn the patron. Lastly, the decor is very nice, inviting, and playful (they have helicopter ceiling fans lol). We will go back for sure. read more

First, amazing service. We were a large party that didn't always listen. Very hard to control. Ut handled us with dignity, class, and moments of grace - much needed with a crowd of extroverted foodies who haven't seen each other in a few months. Next, the food was lovely. Being a large group we sampled a variety of dishes. My absolute favorite- the tandoori shrimp. Hands down. The spice was flavorful and the shrimp busting. As I've said before, Aromas of India is probably my wife's and my favorite restaurant in San Diego. It's easily the best restaurant in La Mesa... not just the best Himalayan or best Indian or best Nepalese, but the best restaurant. The food is incredible, as I've highlighted before, and the service is impeccable... from the ministrations of their dedicated human wait staff, the novelty of their robot, or the personal attention one can always count on from the owner, JP, and his wife, Kavita. They are outstanding in every way. If you didn't know that "fine dining Indian" was available in our neck of the woods, you should absolutely give them a try. None of this is new; I've said it all before. What's new is when my wife and I went in yesterday-- it had been a couple of weeks-- and found out that the restaurant had caught World Cup fever! We don't have Fox Sports streaming at home, so what we've been able to catch has largely been on Sirius, but Aromas is streaming every game possible. They even launched a happy hour special around it. My gawd! Try the Bombay Shrimp! The egg rolls are like an Indian flauta. The wings are likely the best available anywhere. The waiters were tentatively courteous. The overall ambiance looked upscale but was casual. It was pretty open &spacious. Parking is a shared lot but not crowded. Here's what was ordered: Garlic & Cheese Naan - These were really well flavored. I would prefer the garlic naan be a bit thicker than what it was though. Keema Samosas - They were spiced enough to be eaten alone, but I kept dipping it in a mix of the mint&hot sauce just for a dash of heat &extra flavor. Tandoori Rack of Lambs - These were my favorite of everything. The tray came out sizzling, but the onions underneath were still raw, which I still ate with my lamb. The entrees came with a serving of rice and a curry side sauce. Chicken Malai Kabab - This one I wasn't too impressed with. I did squeeze some lemon it came with and asked for some yogurt sauce, but eaten by itself it wasn't too much to taste. They are up to date with technology as well, they have a pager system on each table where you can push for the waiter to come when you need anything or the check. When packing my leftovers, my server offered more rice to go, which is a plus! Because of course it's those little gestures that are the most memorable. Overall, this place is really good. We made a last minute decision to go out for Mother's Day dinner and I'm glad we did! We entered to a warm friend welcome by the staff and were seated only a few minutes after arrival. The interior is elegant and inviting. I really enjoyed the helicopter ceiling fans. The staff was great and very attentive. They have a button call system to get the attention of a server. Sometimes it took a couple of pushes until someone came over, but overall the service was great. Drinks came over on a robot that said "Namaste" which was a fun touch. The food was great and exactly what we came for. Their dosa did not disappoint. It is my personal favorite item and I feel like I dont see it often on menus, so I was so excited they has dosas, and naan, and roti, and parathas! All the things. My husband got the goat Tikka Masala with garlic cheese naan, which was the best we've had of both items. The goat was tender and the sauce was flavorful. The drink of the month was a smokey tandori marg and it was a perfect mothers day treat. I'm looking forward to whatever next months special drink will be. We also got the chicken samosas, malai kofta, lentil soup, Chai, and mango Lassi. All delicious! Let me start by saying I have not really had much Indian food in my life but that is now about to change!! I cannot tell you enough how good everything we had was. The cheese naan was absolutely delicious! The butter chicken was so good and tender. The chicken kabobs were made to perfection. So juicy and tender and great seasoning. Of all the dishes we tried my favorite was the butter chicken. You must try it if you come to Aromas of India. We came in on a Wednesday evening for dinner and they have live jazz and wine specials night. Loved the jazz in the background as we ate our meal. The ambiance was great and their decor looked elegant. All of the staff were friendly and super helpful explaining what the dishes were and when we mentioned my husband's tomato allergy, they went above and beyond to let us know there were tomatoes in that dish. After having dinner there, I decided to use them to cater my daughter's wedding rehearsal dinner. Everyone loved all of the dishes but the butter chicken won first place at the rehearsal. Authentic and delicious Indian food!!! I got the mild tikka masala and it did not disappoint. Definitely not spicy, and I can definitely get spicier next time. The lentil soup was good (far left corner), but I'm a bit picky so it wasn't on my radar. The sauce on the top right was like a sweeter sauce, but like I said, because I'm picky it wasn't my cup of tea. Overall, great lunch portion size and price! Staff was friendly and service was quick! The Yelpers were right - this is a 5 star Indian restaurant. The place is tastefully decorated and there's plenty of seating. The servers are helpful and knowledgeable. The food is really, really good. We had the lamb chops (rack of lamb). Lamb has been marinated in a tandoori seasoning and then cooked to perfection (I'm guessing in a tandoori oven). They serve it on a bed of sizzling onions and bell peppers and an assortment of chutneys. The chicken biriyani is very flavorful, moist and full of perfectly cooked chicken. Raita (yogurt sauce) is served on the side and it helps temper some of the spice. We ordered a spice level 3 and it was just right with the raita. Had a meh experience this time around. Tried to order the veggie thali. It's on their physical menu and the website menu. I was told they're no longer serving any of their thalis anymore and it will soon be taken off the menu. So I ordered the fish vindaloo with a spice level of 5/10. First, the spiciness level tasted like a 1 or a 2. Second, the fish was somehow dry even in the vindaloo sauce and the taste of the fish wasn't great. So far my best experience at this place has been during their first week of opening. Each subsequent experience has been less exciting. read more
