1-Star Review My wife and I have been regular customers at Himalayan House on Friars Road for quite some time. We come here once or twice a week for lunch, sometimes just the two of us and often with two friends. Unfortunately, after what happened today, we will not be returning. Today, my wife and I came in by ourselves because we had not been able to get a response from our two friends about whether they wanted to join us. We were seated at a smaller table, which was completely reasonable for two people. About 10 minutes later, our friends texted us that they were on their way. When they arrived, we politely asked if we could move to a larger table. The restaurant was approximately 60% empty, and there were plenty of larger tables available. Instead of simply accommodating the request, the gentleman working there made a big issue out of it and insisted on adding two chairs to our small table. I explained that four people would be crowded and that we would simply prefer to sit comfortably at one of the many available larger tables. At that point, I asked why this was becoming such a big deal. His response was, "Yes, it is a big deal." He then told me that we should have told him from the beginning that we were going to be four people. I explained that we genuinely did not know our friends were coming when we arrived. I also asked him not to be disrespectful and simply allow us to move to a larger table. He then explained that the problem was that he would have to clean two tables instead of one. That was the moment we decided that this was no longer worth it. My wife and I paid for our meals, our friends left with us, and the four of us walked out. I understand that restaurants have procedures and that tables need to be cleaned. But when you have regular customers, a restaurant that is more than half empty, and four people simply asking to move to a larger table so they can sit comfortably, turning it into an argument is completely unnecessary. Hospitality is about making customers feel welcome and accommodating reasonable requests. If someone is unwilling to be hospitable, patient, and respectful toward customers, then they should not be working in the hospitality business. It is especially disappointing because we were frequent customers and genuinely enjoyed coming here. One unnecessary confrontation over something this minor has now cost the restaurant four regular customers. read more

Came here to celebrate my daughter's 17th birthday. Cute large space with plenty of seating. They have a large parking lot but can get busy at times and hard to find parking. Her only request was the butter chicken, which was very good, tender, spicy, and flavorful. The salmon and chicken tandoori was super tender, juicy, and grilled to perfection but was lacking flavor and spice. Garlic cilantro naan was so flavorful, buttery, soft and delicious. Shrimp curry was lacking flavor and spiciness. I ordered spicy and did not even have a hint of spiciness in it. Definitely recommended the large Ceasars salad with grilled chicken. It was delicious. Chicken momo was ok but again it was lacking flavor. Lamb curry was also lacking flavor but the lamb was not gamey which was a plus. A tropical fish tank graces the entrance. 28 tables (they're numbered) indoors, and limited outdoor seating. 6 of the tables were occupied when I visited at noon on a Thursday. Except for the floor mats under the buffet line, it's extremely clean and organized. Even the ceiling is brightly colored. They enforce a new plate rule, which I appreciate. A make your own salad with green leaf lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and dressings. Fresh cantaloupe and orange slices. A large selection of dishes on the buffet line, including lamb and several chicken entrees. The flavors were okay but not great. Nothing was at all spicy, and many of the dishes were mushy. The sauces were very runny, as were the mint and tamarind condiments. The kheer is good, with just the right amount of sweetness. A tremendous value at only $14 for all the food you can eat. I can see why it seems to be popular with the elderly; this place would be perfect in a retirement community. I've been to this plaza many times and decided to try this restaurant. It's such a hidden gem! Prior to going, I was planning getting their lunch special set menu, but I saw a sign outside for essentially $12 all you can eat on the weekend (in this economy!). So I opted for Al you same at, and everything was fresh and tasty! The meat were all tender and flavorful. This restaurant is celebrating their 10th anniversary and have a lunch buffet for a really great price. I've gone twice and the items changed a little. So I don't know if the buffet items change. There is usually two to three main dishes, and quite a few side items, one day it was butter naan and Cajun fries. YUM. There's also a small salad bar with some fruits. Someone came by and cleared away our plates and refilled drinks often. The place can be crowded, but it is clean and a nice and calm place to have lunch. read more

Adding this to my favs list. As soon as we walked in the staff was nice and very fast, we sat down and they immediately gave us their menu and filled our waters. We were given free lentil soup which wasn't my personal favorite but it was free and warm. I've eaten a lot of Indian food, but nothing has made me feel like I am going to walk outside into the streets of Mumbai quite like Himalayan Curry and Grill. I could eat a platter of their veggie korma, Chana masala, and butter chicken on their naan everyday for the rest of my life. We thought my two young boys would have trouble eating the complex flavored fare, but fear not. Our kids love the coconut shrimp, (free!) lentil soup, and Chana masala. We have been regular customers at this restaurant for some time. and have enjoyed the food and found the prices fair. About two weeks ago we made reservations to host my Father-in-Law's 98th birthday celebration since he loves North Indian cuisine. Much prior to the event, we called and explained how important this event would be to him and the family. Even with all the arrangements, on the day of the event their service was abysmal. Which really shocked us. There were about 12 family members that gathered at the restaurant around 11 am. Despite the fact that the reastaurant was nearly empty, we found that the servers were extremely negligent. Even basic service like fillling water glasses or clearing out the empty plates was not done. Our drink orders (chai and soft drinks) were not fulfilled even with repeated reminders. For the amount of money we spent, the service was less than acceptable. I do not want to sound like a disgruntled customer, but for all the efforts we took to make Dad's birthday special, the service did not measure up at all. We also noticed that the prices have gone up, and the service has definitely gone down. I am giving 3 stars for the food, but I would not even give one star for service. read more

Food was good and service was fine, but I was disappointed by the buffet coupon promotion. The coupon advertised a Sunday lunch buffet for $13.95 and stated "One coupon per family or group or table." Our party of five assumed this meant the buffet pricing applied to the table, with one coupon required per group. Instead, only one person received the coupon price and the other four paid the regular buffet price of $15.95. The coupon does not explicitly state that it is valid for only one diner, so the promotion was confusing and did not match our expectation. When two friends joined us during lunch, we politely asked to move to a table for four. The manager refused and told us all four people had to stay at the small table for two. What made the situation even more disappointing was that the restaurant was nearly empty at the time--only two tables were occupied. Our friends had already taken food, but we felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome that we had to leave our meals and leave the restaurant. We also witnessed the manager refuse another customer's request to sit outside. We understand that seating can sometimes be limited, but in this case there appeared to be plenty of available tables. The manager's attitude was cold and unnecessarily inflexible. It is very disappointing to be treated this way as regular customers. We will not be returning. read more

Stopped by Himalayan Curry and Grill for a quick dinner last week based on a recommendation from a friend. Tucked in the Mission Gorge shopping center, I was able to find quick parking (avoiding the in and out traffic) to pick up my order. Came here for lunch on a whim while my car was in the process of an oil change. When I arrived at the restaurant I was immediately greeted by the host/waiter. He seemed pretty nice and was hopefully in ordering. I ordered from their lunch menu, I didn't realize that I could choose two of the dishes so that was a plus or maybe I should have read the menu better haha. In any case, I ordered the chicken vindaloo and ended up getting double serving of it. The chicken was tender and moist in the sauce and the spice level was good although at the end of the meal the waiter did ask me "was the spice level good?" I told him it could use a little bit more and he said I would have brought out some of their hot sauce. The service was good as he was attentive and refilled my water when it was low. Staff is very attentive and food comes out hot and fresh. Their dinner portions are very much family style and enough to share and have leftovers. We came today for the lunch menu which is from 11am-3pm highly recommend and to add a nice appetizer the veggie Samosas are delicious. The Samosas come with a plum sweet sauce, and I really encourage to ask for the mint green sauce which is the tang that goes with it. They stopped giving both sauces, not sure why. We've tried almost everything on the menu, never a miss on taste and packed with flavor. We have our own favorite's which are The chicken tiki masala Chicken takki Tandori Veggie vindaloo Sagaloo Veggie korma Biryanis are all delicious Soups Masala Tea The menu is extensive but don't be intimidated, you can add spice level as well. My family loves this place. We used to go to the location near the Sports Arena before they moved to its current location on Friars Rd. Great news for us because it's closer now. We always get the chicken korma. It's simply delicious. The bits of coconut in the korma sauce is what brings back every time. The servers are always so kind and friendly. The chicken korma was really tasty too, but I would recommend the tikka masala! The curry comes with a side lentil soup. If you aren't too stuffed from the curry, the lentil soup is worth a try too! After moving into the area over 6 months ago now, this has become one of our staples whenever we are craving Nepalese food. This is located in the plaza where the In and Out is, but don't be fooled - there is plenty of parking. Best to avoid heavy times at In and Out so you don't deal with issues just being able to park around the drive through line. The colorful tiles on the ceiling along with the different table numbers with the sights of Nepal will tell you you're in the right place. There is plenty of seating and some large numbered tables for those wanting a group setting. I almost always end up getting chicken or paneer tikka masala with medium heat and basmati rice. DO NOT miss out on that garlic cilantro naan - it's perfect to dip into the curry sauce. Medium heat still packs some heat, but it's not so hot you can't enjoy it. I also have a pretty high heat tolerance (buldak ramen is maybe a 5-6/10 on my heat scale, if that makes sense), so take my advice accordingly. My husband is a bit more adventurous and has ordered the lamb biryani and other such dishes, but he too, favors the tikka masala. The curry itself is SO good that I don't care what's actually the protein in it - just hand me a bowl of the tikka masala with some garlic cilantro naan and I'll be happy. Also, the lentil soup they provide at the beginning is surprisingly one of my favorites - to the point that I ask for hubby's so I can then have two.
